"Information is like a bottle of fine wine. You store it, you hoard it, you save it for a special occasion, and then you smash someone's fuckin' face in with it"
I just love the way Shiv’s face contorts when she hears information that is in any way inconvenient for her. It’s so entitled and so smug and so slicey. Sarah Snook mothered her well. What valiant, unforgettable performances by her and Matthew.
@@lucasr406 if they ever wanted to reboot William Stryker as a woman in the new X-Men movies, just give the role to her. She'd both crush it acting-wise and give fans like me the warm blanket feeling of evoking Brian's original performance.
You know what I love about all of this. How perfect all of this is. Shiv won against her siblings, lost overall game, so all 3 loose. Tom, always the dark horse gets the gig he, let's be honest, can fill in nicely. There are glimpses of what 'should've been' throughout the season: Kendall doing great, Shiv and Tom having an actual marriage, but it's all a mirage.
With this and the election, Tom is Vader...but Lucas is the Emperor. I need to watch it again, because the finale had so many layers of writing, acting, reaching loosely to Lear and Murdoch's bunch. I think this finale will age nicely.
Absolutely, in the game of Succession Shiv is the winner over the siblings...... wife of the CEO still puts her at the head table at the end of the day Granted she has a life full of shredded relationships, but you don't make it to the top by being everyone's buddy...... at least not unless you're Tom
@@protostark5860 All three kids did themselves in at the end. People were rooting for Kendall, but in the first season when Logan popped his kid and he did nothing about it, that told me all I needed to know about him
Tom does his math real quick here and decides to take a calculated risk. The moment he realises Mattson’s lost Shiv’s vote you can literally see the wheels turning in his brain. In the end he tells Shiv it’s him hoping, but also kind of knowing, that if it came down to choosing between him and Ken, Shiv would probably still side by him.
Actually, I think what sets Tom apart from the Roys is that here there is no calculated risk, no big emotional gambit -- he tells Shiv that it's him because he thinks it's the right thing to do. You can see him wrestling with the guilt of keeping the truth from her again and finally coming clean because I think he understands that if he hides this from her and it's revealed by someone else, she will never trust him ever again; and it's simply not in his nature to be deceitful to her.
Tom is just a hore that every thing he get was for marry Shiv, he used, and then he took everything from her. Tom was THE EVIL, the worst thing that a woman can happen. This was not a happy ending.
Also, Tom was willing to make himself go to prison for that cruise scandal which thankfully he never done that. And who was the last person with Logan in the end? Tom! Also, Tom is prioritize the company over himself most of the time. He's also has enough with Shiv's BS.
@@margarethmichelina5146 Tom and Shiv, especially Shiv, did not always tell each other everything. I don't think Tom found that Shiv went to see the cruise-line sexual harassment victim. In a sense, she is as much involved in the cruise mess as he is. She tampered with witness, while he destroyed evidence.
Look at the way Shiv and Tom being interviewed by Mattson and also the way they pitched themselves. Shiv went with "Pick me, Pick me" energy but she's never telling Mattson specifically what she's doing on the company. All she did was telling him "You have to pick me just because I'm good." Even though Mattson knew she has no experience on the company. Also, she's pregnant, imagine having a pregnant CEO when she has to go on Maternity Leave for 2-3 months to take care of her baby, who's gonna be in charge on the company? She's never thinking of that as she's never looking herself on the future. Meanwhile, when Tom got interviewed, Tom told what he did on the company, he also said that he never slept well from past few days since Tailgate Party. He even missed Logan's funeral and stay at work. He is telling Mattson with a humility and he's willingly to be a pain sponge as he mostly being hurt by Shiv and her brothers many times. He's also talking to Mattson like adult while Shiv's talking to Mattson like a little girl who's begging for a toy. Mattson realized he's the one.
That scene where she walks in the hallway going to tell Kendall & Roman “It’s Tom” gave me so much chills. Nicholas Britell perfected this scene with the music. Incredible.
I've seen a lot of people saying that Shiv flipped at the last minute just to spite Ken, but I think this scene and her earlier conversation with Tom on the phone informs her decision far more than anything else in the episode. Shiv is terrified of being left alone, her father is gone, her mother is emotionally unavailable, Mattson has betrayed her, her brothers have already tried to cut her out of the business once this season (and Kendall's behavior certainly pointed towards icing her out again), and if she voted the deal down, she loses Tom forever too. Shiv is terrified of the prospect of having to open herself up to another person (again) and having it go wrong - so she picks the 'devil she knows' in Tom.
@Imafraid Jumitebeeinnagang u are overthinking it idiot. Macfayden (Tom's actor) said that "It was a visceral reaction to seeing her brother in the boardroom and thinking, I can’t bear him." She literally couldn't stand Kendall actin like a jackass in charge and voted against him. She wasn't weighing the benefits and costs during the hear of he moment
Well, Siobhan did more or less sell/promote Tom's abilities, as she saw them, to Matsson, to wit: at Logan's funeral, where's your Tommy boy? Siobhan's reply: AT WORK. He's competent at his job; he's popular with his staff; he follows orders, He runs ATN, the corporate cash cow.
Is hard for me to say this, but I think Tom actually was a sincere, honest and loving person with Shiv here, and thats what gave him the win at the end
If you look at Tom’s actions, you’ll see that he’s willing to do whatever it takes, but he does help the people he cares about, namely Shiv and Greg, arguably the two people he loves the most.
Yeah, he also got the job by being honest. He's a grinder, a hard worker, simply wants security not necessarily power...something i imagine Logan wanted when he was growing up poor. It's interesting how throughout the series, its mostly him you see working. He has his flaws but he is arguably the least nastiest of all the characters and you get a sense that he was a really good guy at one point. He is also the only one to show any hints of regret at getting Mencken voted in.
@@bluefilmsltd and he actually cried when Logan was dying. I knew it was going to be Tom and I'm happy that it came to be that he was the last one standing.
He was not at all sincere here. He was actually mirroring how she has treated him in all of the seasons. Tom has finally outplayed Shiv . . . Hence the scorpion gift. Shiv has always underestimated and belittled Tom. And this scene he outplays her again.
This scene may be one of the very best of the series. Shiv thinking she is feeding Tom info that he actually already knows, but also in return, reveals that his #1 in Greg shared this very info, unknowingly that Tom was in fact the one replacing her.. It goes from Shiv thinking she is controlling the conversation and Tom feeling a sense of despair to Wambsgams pulling a Logan and playing the ace card he had up his sleeve by telling the truth to Shiv and watching her crumble. When Tom says “Come on…I know you. Like you wouldn’t if it was the other way around?” Boom. Shiv realized she lost…and her anger in this moment is her last grasp at power before she realizes what her final choice must be in the end. Her reaction, the music, the walk, the camera, the delivery of: “It’s Tom..” Absolutely f#%&ing brilliant.
I dont think Tom telling Shiv that he's the one is this brilliant Loganesque move. Shiv had the votes to give it to Ken and obviously was pissed off at the reveal and became even more determined. Tom's confession was a desperate attempt to leverage the fact that Matsson's choice isn't some rando, but someone she knows and can benefit from, but then again she couldve also benefitted from Ken being CEO. I think it's pretty clear that most of Shiv's decision-making had to do with either Ken's arrogance or her wanting to burn it all down because she lost the job.
@@Iloovecereal Logan always made moves that helped him win. Tom learned from the best and knew that if he was just honest with Shiv (who like you said would want to burn it all down since she lost the job) would lean his way despite her anger. However, one could say that in the end Shiv did this just to keep her hand at the table in the long run and sealing out Ken and Rome for good.
@@cadenford1425 hmmm, i guess im having a hard time believing that Tom and Logan have that much in common. 😄I can't really think of many instances where Logan implemented honesty as a main tactic. Also, Tom got the job because he is subservient and has a good work ethic (which is probably one of the only things they have in common) Yes, Shiv did extend the olive branch to Tom at the beginning of the episode, which he may have used, but I don't think it was a given that Shiv would look past her anger and vote in Tom's favour. Yes, with Tom she still has a hand at the table, but getting an actual position at the company is more likely with Ken cuz he doesn't have to get approval from Matsson.
@@Iloovecereal yeah, I meant more of the idea that Tom “pulled a Logan” and made a successful move. Not so much that they have a lot in common. Tom played the long game in a sense and his play was honesty, while Logan was always more cunning and harsh. Both played to their strengths and did it well which helped them ultimately each have power when they wanted it most. Every kid tried to make their move to do this and couldn’t reach the finish line, so it goes to show how in a way the two are similar, yet so different. I do think that in the end, nobody out of the Roy family is really a winner from their own perspective (except Rome in a way, but ehh lol) regardless of how you look at it - which just shows how well done the writing really is. And yes, while I do think that Shiv would’ve have had an actual position with Ken in charge, she would’ve hated that and found a way to do what she does best and implode it for her own well-being 😂
This is what sealed the deal. Brilliant audible by Tom. Shiv knew this was the only play that keeps her in the game, albeit as nothing more than the CEOs wife.
@@vasvas8914 It was Shiv who sealed the win for Tom by grossly saying to Matsson that Tom "would $%Hk anyone to get what he wants". Boom! That's when Mattson knew to hire Tom for CEO because Tom will not challenge him or his ideas. Tom will do as he's told and get the job done. Thanks Shiv! I LOVE TOM!
Also, Tom is doing something that none of the siblings have: Honesty. When he meets Mattson, he is being honest with no bullshit and gaslights and one more thing, showing how he put the company first and himself later. Tom is even skipping Logan's funeral and not sleep very well showing how he works harder than everyone. Kendall only copying Logan from his attitude but Tom is following Logan's footstep for not caring of any personal life.
@@Richard68434 MIGHT??!! Under Kendall, I think Stewy would end up running Waystar. Stewy is one of the people that I consider killers: Tom, Matsson and Shiv.
Shiv is so entitled. Even her dad wanted her to get experience before she got the top job. No one with sense would make someone a CEO with no business experience. Also it was pretty obvious Mattheson wasn't going to either from the beginning. He just wanted to divide the siblings.
Her dad wanted her to get experience because he never wanted her to succeed or any woman for that matter. He had no problem giving Roman, who had far less working experience, a high position in the company.
@@inessebastiao3887 roman worked at waystar studios with frank watching over him for an undisclosed period of time prior to the start of the series. that gives him at least a couple of years of management experience over shiv. might not be much in comparison to others like gerri or tom, but to say roman had “far less working experience” is just absurd.
@@teddykgb3865 True, he has finally achieved independent wealth, so it's a financial win for him. But the "winning" on this show was always about power and control.
He really didn’t choose to be honest tho. She pulled his card, she caught on to him being sneaky and he kinda had to tell the truth. He’s a piece of shit but so is she.
I think Tom did what was best for his family. Sure it was going to piss Shiv off at first but at the end of the day i think she realizes that if if Tom doesn't take the job then its just going to be someone else. At least this was she and her family is at the top. Might not have been the way she thought but its still better for her than someone random or Ken.

Unlike Season 3 ending when Tom betrayed Shiv, he actually tells Shiv the truth. It has something to do when Shiv genuinely apologize to Tom on the phone earlier.
@@JoaoVictor-yq8ym sarah never won an emmy for succession. Only matthew won his emmy last year. But maybe they locked their emmy in episode 3 for sarah and episode 7 for matthew
He didn’t tell greg because he couldn’t trust him after teaching him to leverage information. He tells shiv because he knows how much she can’t stomach either of her brothers getting the job. Add the baby into the mix, the election shenanigans to install a fascist, and Kendall and Rome’s consistently leaving her out of the room, it all made sense
It's more about the big secret being that Shiv wasn't going to be CEO, not who would be replacing her. Since she already knew that part, knowing it was him didn't really change anything strategically and telling her was better than having it be a surprise.
@@kyleowsen It added the hail mary that if shiv knew it was tom maybe there was a chance she would vote for him instead of voting to block the deal. Her also having his baby helps a bit with that too.
If Tom hadnt gloated about being the new CEO, he probably would had lost and is so funny in hindsight how he basically blaclmailed himself into becoming Ceo
He wasn't gloating. He was going for a hail mary because of the leak. It was mentioned multiple times in multiple scenes before this that the siblings, in the end, would have an advantage because they are together. Tom knew that in order to get the vote, it was through divide and conquer. Shiv, from the beginning, was always excluded and pushed to the side by her two brothers. Tom figured she would never vote for either of her brothers because of this. Not to mention, she was carrying his child and she hinted that she still wanted to give their marriage a try. Tom saw this as an opportunity to mindfuck (a tactic mentioned a lot of times throughout the show) Shiv before a huge vote to create disruption and doubt. Masterful hand played by Tom here. He wasn't being careless. He knew what he was doing. That's why Shiv ended up in Tom's car in the end. She knew he beat her in a game she never thought he would be a serious contender in.
Simultaneously Tom is proud of Greg for finally playing 'the game' to this extent. Hence he keeps him on board. Greg is a straight killer Tom inadvertently trained.
At first I thought the ending was unsatisfying. But now 24 hours later and it’s stuck with me big time. Such a haunting episode. Yes I think it probably would have been a better season finale rather than the series finale, but there really wasn’t any other way this show could have ended.
man they truly could have went another season but I would rather end it here than have the show end on some mediocre piece of horse shit like game of thrones
I mean, they could've left the company in hands of them three and actually redeem their broken relationship. Instead, they ruined it for all three and she is just a trophy wife.
@@moonbeeps They were told previously that the 3 of them would not be allowed to run the company. Tellis told them in Barbados that Shiv was not acceptable. The three would have never worked. Too much emotional baggage.
The ominous music that kicks in here, when Logan is giving his speech at atn and when Kendall talks to Hugo about being the only ceo, it’s amazing. Truly the music in this show is amazing.
Knowing how it ends up, I can truly appreciate the fact that they use the exact same musical cue when she makes the numbers claim as they did in Logan’s ATN speech when he plans on making a better news outlet the day before he died. Absolute masterclass.
i love every single one of these actors and actresses and hope to see them in more incredible roles. sarah's facial expressions are fucking insane, she is a master of her craft and created a perfectly portrayed character. there's honestly not one single moment where any of the major characters felt off or awkward, the unbelievable attention to detail with their personalities and the consistency of it all provides an amazing display of character development that unfolds right before your eyes this show is a masterpiece and it's one of HBO's best, and i think it always will be, no matter what they make next. i didn't expect to love it as much as i did, but it's one of the best shows i've ever seen. it rivals breaking bad in my honest opinion when it comes to the level of talent and love that went into it, and how deserving it is of awards and recognition globally.
She never once treats him with respect, that's why this is great. Meanwhile, Tom knows how to be respectful and subservient, something none of them can do if they try. The siblings all thought that legacy was what Logan cared about most, but it wasn't. Logan only cared about being the richest dragon. So did Tom and Matsson. That's why they all succeeded where the siblings failed
Everybody in this show was so amazing, just top game, over and over and over. I was so happy to discover it in its final season. So I saw three seasons straight, then by weekly basis, oh man. I really lived through it. I still rewatch the last season once in a while just for the raw emotion.
What I think is missing from this is that even though shiv didn’t win, her privilege as a woman of higher class affords her the opportunity to still be married to a winner. I think she weighed her options and recognized through marriage she could still somewhat get what she wants. So, I think she’ll end up like her mother, but slightly more jaded. Although her brothers lost and yes still incredibly wealthy, they lost everything; whereas, shiv lost, but still won because she gets to be married to the guy that has a seat at the table.
or she could divorce and still have a pretty large pool of pretenders to choose from. she doesn't need tom's money, his status just matched hers. why are people acting as she is willa or sm 💀. she will always be a roy
I agree, joining hands with Tom in the finale ensures, at least, a seat at the table, albeit no longer at the ends. I would not be surprised if she manipulates their relationship using their child as leverage
@@EarthenGames well she was wasn't her.. tom was always a wolf dressed as sheep until the end. but still she will always be privileged .. people forget she was about to aquire the pierce conglomerate and that she was the selling point for it . @user-vq7wr9up6l well that's more of a personal impression i think. for me, i thought his smile was bittersweet, like a " we could had have it all" moment. specially knowing he was drinking gerri's favorite drink . i think he might be the sibling more inclined to move forward tho
Bro im so happy, was rooting for Tom and all the bullshit he endured with this family and my boy got the big Win ! I won through him, I'm so happy that i even think i won with him Sweet revenge !!!
Tom's whole arc in the pilot is him playing fetch for Logans approval (Patek Philippe), seeing how it went, he quitted that game right off the bat, in the series finale we see the siblings still killing themeselves for Logan's approval, while Tom gets it all
Is she, though? She knows enough about the company to act as a silent partner alongside Tom in guiding the company. What we saw here was Shiv drawing her brothers into pulling together the numbers to _try_ to keep the company in the family - knowing, of course, that she was going to pull the rug out from under the whole thing because she had another ace in her hand - Tom.
Some of the best acting ever. you’d swear they all hate each other but when it comes down to it they’ll break jaws to protect one another. True sibling love.
I liked how in the end none of them ascended to the throne and they were indeed "not serious people". Would have liked another few minutes just to flash forward and see where every one ended up.
Same but it does fit the show that we dont know..because it starts and ends with the kids relationships with their fathers company. Since all 3 got axed theirs really no point to show the after of it all. Probably would’ve just been nothing of sadness and despair.. even though they all got a billion lmaooo.
yea they were all pretty much clowns. Roman was a total joke. Shiv was too emotional and got played by people constantly throughout the series. And Kendall you would think would be good, but the guy was a complete basket case at times there is no way he should have been in charge either.
It does show that, and the inside the episode touches on it also. Roman goes back to the rich guy at the bar, living aimlessly as before. Shiv becomes Tom's wife, choosing power adjacent over nothing. Kendall reflects on himself with melancholy, he might start some new company or continue with 100 thieves (or whatever that was), but he'll never achieve anything like his father's company in his lifetime. Destiny lost.
don’t bet on it. any child logan would have had, he would have them fucked up. also, tom is a suck-up, the likes of him and greg are logan’s legacy, because that’s the only thing that grows near him, people who suck up to shit in order to survive. no one with vision survives and no one gets to evolve or develop a vision. same with mattson, except he would probably just ignore his kids, if he’d ever have any. logan takes care of logan.
in hindsight this scene was pretty cool because he's basically truly processing in real time that mattson wasn't just blowing smoke to him when they met, and then navigating this conversation with shiv. so many great acting performances through the show but macfadyen was tremendous
The number one boy almost made it. Almost. Did shiv save him or kill him? We wouldn’t ever know. All we know is- he made his whole life about the top job. It was promised to him when he was 7. Except the company he has nothing. No kids, no wife, no dad, no friends, no partner, - just Colin. A perfect completion of the tragic arc of Kendall Roy. Jeremy Strong, you are such a fucking legend for playing him this well. A Lady Macbeth kinda person, with a serious but childish demeanour, comical and tragic at the same time.
In the long run shiv probably saved Kendell, he probably would have failed as CEO and that would have definitely ruined him. He'll probably bounce back do his own thing with the billions he just got from the deal
@@reidgrant7036 yes but as kendall said- he is a cog just for this machine. Shiv should’ve known that. Kendall has nothing now. Nobody. No one. This has completely broken him.
In the moment I thought Tom made a big mistake by telling Shiv. I was pulling for Ken but didn’t get what I wanted. In hindsight the ending was perfect and this became one of the most satisfying scenes.
Fucking phenominal. Even though we all had our ideas as to who would ascend, I'm sure we all had a tiny hint of the idea that none of them would. Hell, even I thought Ken would finally go into beast mode and win. But Tom?....never would've seen that coming in a million years😅. What a play. What. A. Play.... Bravo, HBO.
She ultimately does it anyways, because the truth is, Tom would've done it for her if it was the other way around. My theory on Shiv and Tom's relationship was always this: Shiv could only LOVE Tom as her underling, but she could only RESPECT Tom when he betrayed her or played the game ruthlessly. It seems at the end of the show Tom earned Shiv's respect, but as you can tell by the placement of her hands, there's no love there.
This has more to do with being sidelined each time by her siblings regarding who would be CEO. Tom taking the role adds a nice convincing touch to it, but it is in no way the sole reason for it.
As I look back at this show, it’s really funny to me how these people have BILLIONS of dollars and they all choose to fight to have the worst job when they could all do literally anything else and succeed. I get that that’s the point, but if any of us non-billionaires were in their shoes, I think we’d all have cashed out and be sitting on a private island.
We all want what we don't have. Us non-billionaires want to pay our bills, support our loved ones, and be comfortable, and overcoming the barriers to that gives us purpose. The billionaires have no purpose, so they're fighting over the chair because it's the one thing they can't have.
That's why Tom ultimately made CEO. He doesn't want a legacy, he's perfectly happy being a forgettable puppet if it means financial security for the rest of his life. The siblings wanted to be the next Logan, they never realized Logan's legacy was irrelevant to him. He only ever cared about the money, just like Tom.
@@Mwstmrlnd Idk if Logan cared about the money, he just wanted to f***ing win every chance he got. Tom is motivated more by fear of losing. Still better than the kids though who had zero self-motivation.
Shiv has belittled and under estimated Tom in every single series but she literally gets angry when she is outplayed by Tom. Tom is only doing what Shiv would do to him and has done to him in their entire marriage. What she said to Matdsen about Tom was disgusting. Politics and power moves I get but no one should ever disrespect their mate the way she did and Madsen saw how ruthless she could be towards the man that she is pregnant for so I am sure he thought she would do the same to him. And there lies the reason why he chose Tom instead of her.
hm but nothing towards tom for staying silent when mattson said the most horrible misogynistic things about her? they were playing the game, that's all it is, it's nothing personal. they put each other down to display their unemotional unbiased subservienxe.
