@itzenormous
@itzenormous 2 года назад
What's even more unbelievable are all of the comments that say Lewis sucked, he ducked people, he never fought anyone during their prime etc. These are either people who haven't watched much boxing, or are children who weren't around at the time. Lewis, by far, was the most-gifted, hardest-punching, and most dominant heavyweight of that era. I remember when Lewis fought the giant, top-rated Michael Grant in 2000. Grant looked like the next great big heavyweight at the time, and Lewis destroyed him in the 2nd round. Hopefully the boxing historians give him much more credit than these imbeciles do.

Morrison could have beaten anybody at his peak. He was about a notch below Lewis at his peak. That said Lewis was the best overall fighter of that era, and one of the greatest ever. He is underrated because he was not super exciting to watch. A big guy with a great jab and a good right hand. Tyson fans don't like to acknowledge Lewis. Tommy Morrison was more than a left hook. He had power in both hands, great footwork, and hand speed. His endurance was his weakness, and that was due to his lifestyle. With all due respect to Tommy, it seemed like he was there just for the paycheck. He just didn't have the passion for it no more and it was obvious. When it comes to Lennox - he improved a lot since his fight prior to this one; working with Emanuel Steward did wonders for him even in such a short period of time. Foreman was fighting very seriously and cautiously when fighting Moorer cause he knew Moorer was a much stronger opponent. And Foreman almost lost that fight BADLY. @@teamzawafootball1370 I know, this Smartboy character obviously isn't that smart. if he was, he would know that Lewis fought all of the top heavyweights of that era, and dominated. I don't know how he can say that Lewis fought Tyson past Tyson's prime. First of all, Tyson was always heavily overrated. He never fought anyone but a bunch of has beens and never wases, except a very old Larry Holmes. Michael Spinks was a very small 205 lbs, and was scared to death in '88 when he fought Tyson. Every capable heavyweight that Tyson ever fought, beat him. And, Smartboy also fails to mention that even though Tyson was 35, almost 36, in 2002 when he fought Lewis; Lewis himself was 37 and near retirement. I guess he also missed where Lewis dominated an in-his-prime slugger like David Tua, and destroyed top-rated giant, Michael Grant in 2000. I could list off all of the top heavyweights that Lewis defeated, all in or near their prime, but Smartboy, not knowing much about boxing, probably doesn't know who any of them are, or were.

I am critical of Tommy as a fighter, while admitting he was exciting to watch at times. I’ve watched a lot of his fights and highlights and during his competitive fights I don’t think I ever saw him enjoying himself, relaxed, in control or even confident. He was always vulnerable, surviving, and you get the sense he was on the verge of getting knocked out. In the Foreman fight and even after Tommy gave Foreman a head thrashing, Foreman was hunting him down until the last second of the 12th round. Foreman ran out of time and at least twice in that last round, Tommy was on the verge of going. Same with Lennox Lewis. Tommy didn’t want to be in there. Carl Williams was beating him on points. Tommy tasted a few decent rights and took a knee on the canvas twice in the fifth. This is after Tommy dropped Williams twice. However, he did stop Williams but not in the kind of way one would expect. With Razor Ruddock. Same thing. Gassed and Ruddock had no fear of Tommy. Instead, while headhunting, he walked into a left hook and was later stopped by an exhausted flurry from Tommy. It’s hard to say a skilled fighter is ever lucky when his number one weapon comes through for him. However, in that one second of his career, I maintain he was lucky that Razor Ruddock had no regard for Tommy at that point in their fight. Against Mercer, Tommy wanted out of there after Mercer took every missile he had. Tommy knew what was coming. In fact, right before the famous decapitation highlight real, stop it when Tommy’s head is slightly over the ropes before the first big right. Tommy quit at that moment. He gave up and then Mercer finished him off. The point being is that Tommy didn’t like a fight. He liked to blow people up and get out of there. There were so many times Tommy would drop his hands, turn his back on his opponent, or take a knee to the canvas at the first sign of punishment. He was full of nervous energy and I would even say fear until he exhausted himself to the point of collapse-which was around the sixth round. Morrison was one of many "good" heavyweights but that's about it.

@jakeyb25

You are spot on about the relaxation aspect of boxing which Tommy never quite managed to grasp. He was as you say a very tight fighter and that meant his tank often ran dry very early in fights usually after three or four rounds or so. That and his defense were the main factors which prevented him from reaching a higher level. His stamina was poor that if you watch his fights he becomes a completely different fighter less combinations easier to hit etc etc. His defense too was poor he was always extremely easy to hit and with a bad chin that's a recipe for disaster. I do disagree with you when you question his heart. I think Tommy had toughness he had a broken jaw, broken right hand, cut over his eye against Joe Hipp and kept going and turned that fight around. Against Williams after being knocked down twice he didn't give up he stayed determined and once again pulled it around. Even in this fight he could of easily just not come out of the corner for the sixth round but he pleaded his case saying I have still got my left eye i.e. don't stop it I am still in this. All of those examples show a fighter who persevered when the going got tough he was far from a quitter but was ultimately as you say a good but flawed heavyweight.

He did worse than alcohol. I also don't think he bought into his own hype, but he did buy into his power like many punchers do. Morrison got really unlucky with that right eye in the second round that kept itching and irritating him. It also affected his ability to be effective at long range, and his strategy depended on spotting quickly Lewis' jabs to duck them in the nick of time. Lewis is a bit sluggish but has more power. Morrison had to box faster and land more constantly looking for openings. But this meant he had to stay withing range of Lewis' jabs and spot them quickly enough so as not to walk into one of them, and he needed both eyes for that.

" when people are tested for HIV, they don't observe the symptoms. they draw blood and look for evidence of the virus itself, by looking for the antigens and antibodies that are created by it's presence. no physician would look at someone and make a diagnosis for HIV by observing the symptoms alone. this is something you need to understand. his doctor performed the tests and observed the presence of the antigens and antibodies that were there. these could not have been present had the virus itself not been. quit saying it wasn't HIV, it WAS HIV. the only people who claim otherwise, are his fans, who jumped on a comment made by his wife. again, his own doctor and his own mother stated categorically that it was HIV. his sons were born in 1989 and 1990, this means that he would have picked up the virus sometime after his second child's conception (roughly sometime during or after october 1989) if indeed that was when it happened. there's also the fact that most if not all the cases of children being born HIV+ are through the virus being passed on by the mother during pregnancy, it's only in very VERY rare cases that fathers pass the virus onto their children before birth. morrison led a promiscuous life, and paid the price for it with his health and the loss of his license to fight. the overwhelming evidence backs up the fact that his death, whilst not being caused by the virus itself, was brought on prematurely by it. now you can still cling onto the dumb belief that he didn't have HIV all you want, but he did indeed have it. he was tested for it by his own physician, and it's presence was found. the only point of contention that there can be, is exactly WHEN he became infected, because it most certainly happened. it was publicly disclosed in 1996, so it happened for sure sometime after the conception of his second child, and before it was disclosed to the world. that's a simple fact. now you can accept fact, or you can continue to live in a fantasy world where you still believe he didn't have HIV, either way, it doesn't change the fact that morrison was indeed HIV+
