Tomoharu Saito, a Magic the Gathering Pro Player has a unique shuffling style. Taken at Grand Prix San Francisco 2007 in his game against Olivier Ruel.
@@Tinskap You would for sure be mad if he did this, won game one, stalled out on board actions, you are about to win game 2 and time is called on the match.
Imagine complaining about fetch lands when in yu-gi-oh there are tutors that searches tutors with legs that search other tutors that fetches deck summons with 3 draws between so you have to shuffle
@@groundpoundtime5488 holding top packet and bottom packet, and twirling the middle packet, is not shuffling. Neither is counting the cards out on the table and stacking them back in order.
@@myrusEW Cool story, but none of what you said happened here. He didn't only switch around seperated stacks, the cards were also mixed into each other in the same sequence. And in the second part you can't count out like he does and simple but the stacks onto each other to get the same order, that's not possible.
I didn’t think much about the shuffle until he started pile shuffling, even though it was probably the most common thing he did that entire time I’ve never seen someone do that and it looks amazing
@@theguyyouheardabout6658 That's why you do the bootleg version where you ripple in your hand by letting them slide between each other. Still ripple shuffling to a degree and wont bend your $500 deck
@C David exactly, yet he chooses to do this mundane almost meaningless task that is being done all around him and else where with such grace and thoughtfulness, instead of just shuffling the cards together. I think this video should be shown to future generations on for the determination of the human spirit.
@C David there can be special stuff also in mondane stuff, you know? His shuffling is a special shuffling for a tcg player, like you can say a dancer has a special way of dancing etc. You don't have to send people to Mars to do something special Also other question: do you do it, or know people irl that do it? Shuffling this way being rare makes it special
I would say the first shuffle part wasn't really a shuffle. The top half of the deck never moves. And the bottom half is just being cut over and over again (if he really good perfectly cut so the cards don't really change place) lol I doubt he is cheating but it is a good way to try and get away with cheating. The way he shuffles he can get away with the top half of the deck being in the specific order he wants.
@@xavierdeguzman7894 true but then when he piled the stacks he randomized those top cards as well, unless he is hoping to hit every 6th and 10th card without searching. But yeah if he didn't pile, you would have a valid point.
It's one thing if you just have a bad habit of not randomizing your deck well after picking up your lands at the end of a game, but do you know the word for making sure you have a land every few cards? Cheating.
I had that problem, there’s a trick that helps prevent that. After each game, shuffle everything except for your library. After that, shuffle everything into your library.
your mean hes like China, you said you'd pay off the refs dont let them catch me cheating. oh they didnt see me stack the same 5 cards on the top of my power shuffle, hiyaaaa
As he raised his eyes to heaven, young Tohomaru uttered a small prayer to the Pend God, Steven Trifunoski, and asked that he open Pend Call Darkwurm - Amen
Admire tomahatu saito his skills are amazing, with shuffle like that things be very random and better for players on both sides. His skill set is legendary!

My initial reaction to this is that I can't believe this is considered legal shuffling. This is exactly how a card mechanic would shuffle a deck to appear to be shuffling thoroughly while actually controlling cards. I also thought that piling cards at high level events was not allowed because it creates opportunities to stack your deck.
He did a video try to do this shuffle around 2020-2021 iirc Trying to get the speed of the shuffle, he's out of practice, hiccups here and there, and trying diffent types of sleeve. He's in the TCG business right now, owning Hareruya TCG store, having multiple stores across Japan and Asia
I actually played in this event... its funny going back and watching things like this, reminds me of when you could actually play magic for a living and actually see the world doing it. This was a block constructed event, it was a lot of fun.
@@alexhazel this shuffle is very long and he has it timed out to the legal DCI limit every time he takes a shuffle action when he is advantaged. He is a notoriously slow player when up one game in a match. He has been banned for slow play/intentional clock manipulation before.
looks more like an elaborate routine to stack the deck than a regular shuffle hahhaha, especially since he seemed to have a separate pile of cards at the start that he put in specifically before going through his routine
HollowGaming If you let him shuffle for you, you'd mulligan every hand. He is one of the most notorious cheaters in the game, and has been suspended and disqualified, time after time. Riffle shuffling makes it easy maneuver cards, and place them where you want.
+HollowGaming This shuffling is fine, and I'm not aware of Saito having a reputation as a mechanic, but... Saito is kind of a sad case. He IS a pro, he's extremely skilled and by his results alone as well as other contributions, would have a spot in the Hall of Fame... except. He is a notorious cheater, and has been suspended and disqualified repeatedly. The offences he was punished for were stalling, bribery and a bizarre manipulative attempt to get an opponent disqualified in a hopeless game. He has a very shady reputation. He makes the HoF voting conversations awkward too "Anyone who has more than X stats has to get a vote... except Saito".
+raisins7777 I believe he's redeemed himself. His cheating isn't the Alex Bertecheaty type where he draws extra cards, but rather unsportsmanlike conduct.
raisins7777 that "bribing" scenario was Bs. He asked the other finalist if he wanted to split the prize, and a mistranslation or miscommunication made judges think he was bribing his opponent to drop the match. The stalling and the random shuffle, offer cut to opponent, and call judge for opponent cutting; those were blatant cheating
This is how I shuffle. I vaguely remember this video from back then and never gave it much thought but I picked up his shuffling method. Didn't even remember this till this popped up and someone asked how'd I learn this way
