When I was attending the Pentecostal Church. I was never taught how to read the Bible there was no Biblical Teaching mostly just showing up to a Theater looking for a show carrying a book that I never opened .

Quite the opposite experience for me. Too much of Bible study and praying.. kids of 8 years and up are being baptised in Holy Spirit. I have experienced all gifts mentioned in the Gospel including for a short period of healing, but mainly i consider tongues to be the primary gift and after that prophecy. The others rarely..
@MichaelHendrix7
@MichaelHendrix7 5 месяцев назад
@@arthura777 Yes , I experienced people claiming the gift even though Paul said there must be an interpreter and no more than 3 if I remember. He did not say everyone in the Church and he did not say you are not saved if you don’t have the gift which some Pentecost Churches Teach. “ if you don’t speak in tongues you are not saved” I seen people claiming they could turn it on and off at will . Promises of money and healing that never came and they gave money hoping to be blessed. The money tray passing 2 or 3 times quoting Malachi and Luke : A cheerful giver . I could tell you tons of stories why I left.

@@MichaelHendrix7 If that is the case, you have done well my brother, the prophecy is being announced in the native language church understands, the interpretation is another different gift where (as i experienced) someone raises his voice and instead of speaking in the known language he speaks unknown and after he stops speaking then another person raises his voice and interpreting in the known language and it goes partially back and forth till the message ends, this is more rarely to find in the congregations. Paul says about prophecies when is done the others (usually the elders and more experienced in how God speaks) are checking to find any flaws or inconsistencies that give in by the prophets heart thus makes it a false prophecy. The gifts of HS are nothing to do with the salvation, but because when you receive it you become more confident and empowers you, so it is wise to ask for.

@@arthura777 Yes , Brother in Christ. I am not one to say it cannot happen. Because God can do whatever he wants as you have explained. I have only witnessed it once at a Full Gospel Business Man Fellowship Conference. God has blessed you to be in a Church with sound teaching. I have seen many leave the faith because of such people looking for glamour and not teaching doctrine as established in the scripture

The frustration and never ending striving discussion really hit home. I was raised in Word of Faith home, and this ultimately caused me to move further away from God and from salvation. The Christian "life" was presented as this never ending pursuit of magic tricks. Every sermon in some way dealt with what you could be pursuing that you are not, and why you are failing at what you are pursuing. Basically "how do I get my magic wand to work?" Clench your face harder, grit your teeth, and raise your voice to "conjure" more faith somehow. Just awful stuff. (Ie. Copeland talking to Covid19). Most frustrating was this teaching of filtering you daily stream of human thoughts to separate Gods voice from your own. The reason you don't hear from God is because you aren't listening. So now every moment of personal introspection is a possible divine revelation that must be examined. Lives were wrecked and faith shipwrecked over this. In 1984, my father abandoned his profession and training to move us across the country "on faith" that God had called him to be a Christian actor with CBN. All these prophecies were put on his life and affirmed by others. I was torn from a loving, nurturing "non charismatic" church family, and a stable household in my father's pursuit of God's voice in his head. Not a crazy person. A PhD chemist. It was a disaster. We were flung into poverty. As a middle schooler, my life and self worth were turned upside down. I thought it was my fault. I was the Jonah letting the family down w not enough faith. I went from an A student to failing. It was all humiliating. By high school, I was suicidal. I had no interest in church, and God became a rubix cube I couldn't solve, so I quit considering God altogether. I kept a belief that God was real, but too complicated and risky to deal with. Sin was the easy alternative. My mother contracted autoimmune diseases, and her faith never healed her. She suffered terribly, 25 years, and then died of cancer in 2019. I was unable to have meaningful end of life conversations with her because that would cause her to admit her condition, which was a lack of faith that she would be healed. After she died, my Dad said it was because she lacked faith. The blindness and lack of self awareness remains staggering to this day. My Dad has devoted 40 years of his life to this nonsense doctrine, with nothing to show for it. No health, no wealth, and even worse....he's learned nothing. He's never looked back over his life and realized that everything happened exactly in the way you might expect it to if you made choices out of secular stupidity rather than God's voice in your head. Nothing miraculous came to pass. No promises were kept. There was one illuminating moment at a funeral when Dad was sharing Word of Faith w a distant cousin. The retort was "but that never worked out for you did it?" He came away hurt by the comment, but never saw the truth in the comment. At 78, he lives alone as a widower. He has no hobbies or interests at all. He spends his time walking around the house talking in "tongues" . Consulting God in everything from what to eat for breakfast to what color shirt to wear He still attends a WoF church STILL trying to work out the right elixir to release the power. Again, this is not a mentally ill person. WoF is so dangerous and absolute poison. It's all so heart breaking.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. My uncle was always dabbling in charismania while I was young (he may still be), and my mom was influenced by it enough to be misled to this day, no matter how much good theology and personal biblical counseling she receives from my brother and I. Both my mom and uncle have substance addiction and character problems that always recur like a roller coaster and whenever they are confronted, these theologies pop out of their mouths. They are in your father's generation too, though they lack the education he has.

I have seen what you describe of believers losing their minds because of the gift they received, but were not ready and humble enough to work with it. The Holy Spirit gives great spiritual power, but it is difficult to control it, like you are driving a super car of 500hp. The more experienced brethren and ministers should watch out the prophetic content and address the issues of false prophecy or deception of the heart. There is a way of pattern the prophecies have and the Holy Spirit always speak gentle and kind to the church.

Brother. I can totally identify with your story . I know many that left the church because of the Word of Faith Movement and Prophecy taught in the Pentecostal Church. I was also torn it was not until I started listening to Reformed Theology and learning scripture. I was a Person that carried a Bible going to see the Magic Show. I pray your journey from this experience gives you the strength to study scripture and lead others out of this false teaching. 🙏❤️

@AJTramberg, Really appreciate you sharing your experience. As I completely surrendered to belief in the written Word I was led right into the WOF teachings. I spent so many years trying to attain healing from an issue I was born with that caused pain. Thankfully I didn’t go along with many other false doctrines being taught, but my inability to be healed caused so much heartache from others in the church. I was often told if only I could get my heart to line up with the truth then I could receive. After years I decided if I never receive healing I will not let that or anything make me deny the truth of Who I knew our Father to be. It’s been a long, difficult journey trying to unlearn the twisting of scripture and the lies I had been taught. So grateful to see others being set free from the bondage of these teachings that distort the true gospel. I’m so sorry to read the result of these teachings in your life and the lives of your family.

I have been in assemblies of charismatics who were speaking in tongues. At a time in my Christian faith life when I had been desiring the gift *if it was real* and was seriously praying for the Holy Spirit's guidance in understanding what the Bible teaches about tongues and hours deep in my study of what the Bible says about them, in one assembly where a dozen people around me were 'speaking in tongues' I prayed at the level of a whisper what wouldn't be heard by others, that "the Holy Spirit would silence any voices that were not of God," and the voices around me stopped almost immediately. Coincidence? I don't believe so, but I wasn't positive. To test it, on another such occasion, I did the same, and they immediately stopped. I took this as a confirmation of my first experience to be a result of my prayers, and not just coincidences. This effectively settled the issue for me. I no longer asked for the gift, but I dove in even deeper in studying the issue. Today, I am a cessationist, having studied what God's word says about those gifts, which I now understand to have been specifically granted during the apostolic age for the purpose of ministry to a new and developing community of believers and as a sign for the Jews to verify that those early Christians were led by God's Holy Spirit. Thus, I am left in a position where logic dictates that, if someone is speaking in another tongue, it will be a known, existing language being used specifically to "tell of the wonderful works of God" (the gospel message) to someone of another existing, known language... but I know of no verified instances of this occurring in any assembly I've ever been part of over decades, and I've heard of no verified instances elsewhere. Can God do something miraculous? Certainly, and I've seen that he is always doing miracles in our lives. But rattling tongues of gibberish isn't God's work. That means, logically, either someone is doing that babbling of their own will and work... or it's the work of a demon. I fear for the souls of those who babble gibberish - either it's demonic, or they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit by calling what they are doing "good" and "of the Holy Spirit" when it is actually not. "Woe unto them." Isaiah 5:20

The order of salvation is laid out in the Tabernacle pattern. The door is Jesus. Justifucation at the altar. The laver of baptism that speaks us. In the early church when the newly baptized came out of the waters the saints laid hands for the filling or baptism of the Holy Spirit. That was known as The Way. Then the seeker moved into the inner court which is the sanctification of the soul. The table of shewbread is the breaking of the will.

If the word of God is sufficient, then why wouldn't you believe what is clearly written in the Bible? Makes no sense to throw out the gifts of the Spirit when they were given to the church, for the church for the edification of the church. At no point does the Bible say that these gifts were ceased. As a matter of fact, the Bible says they will continue till we see him face to face and we know Him as we are known. this hasn't happened yet

I came to faith in a Foursquare fellowship and was initially enamored with "signs and wonders" theology as promoted by C. Peter Wagner, John Wimber, and the Vineyard movement. But I also love to study and have a passion for biblical truth, which invariably led me toward the Reformed tradition. I've gone from a pessimistic eschatology to one in which Christ is very much ruling and reigning.

The final nails in my Pentecostal coffin were: 1. Discovering that "frozen chosen" (i.e., not spirit-filled) believers were perfectly capable of living holy lives in service to God without the benefits of the so-called "second blessing". 2. The shocking lack of contrition demonstrated by modern 'prophets' when their prophetic words or decrees were demonstrably proven to be false.

Beware of people and positions that use lengthy and wordy philosophical narratives to bring you to conclusions which run directly counter to the plain sense of the actual text of scripture. The NT explicitly commands us to "pursue spiritual gifts' especially to prophesy," "pursue prophecy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues," "Do not quench the Spirit, do not despise prophecy but test all things." There is not a whisper of clear language telling us to no longer obey these commands of God.

Appreciated the interview. Quite a bit of ground covered. I first wrestled with this 30 years ago and continue to 'suffer' from impacts of the 'misguided pentecostal teaching". The misguided teaching has robbed my marriage of any hope of 'oneness' in the relationship. It is very divisive. I hold to the scriptural understanding that was outlined in the interview. Disappointed that the following question was never really unpacked: tongues, as taught in the bible, are other languages. What, then, is being babbled by the so called 'baptized'? It would have been nice to ask Kofi "what do you think you were doing/saying when you were convinced you were speaking in tongues?

Hey pastor Joel! I appreciate your ministry and am an avid listener of guys like you and Doug Wilson. So blessings first of all! I’m kind of the opposite of your story - I came from a reformed presby/baptist background but unexpectedly experienced ecstatic glossolalic tongues in prayer. I know many others who have similar unsolicited experiences who have even questioned this phenomenon in light of scriptures to figure out how to weigh it, though they intuitively felt edified by it. This is where I appreciate Lloyd Jones’ exegetical position and critique of warfield’s cessationism, though I am open to being convinced by the best biblical data over my psyche. As for prophecy/words of knowledge, I think it’s important to take into account the forgotten accounts of the reformed tradition - like Richard Knill’s prophecy over Charles Spurgeon when he was a child, spurgeon’s many words of knowledge of listeners’ secret sin from the pulpit, or even modern reformed Baptist guys like Albert N Martin/Paul washer being known for strangely accurate words of knowledge about people or prophetic predictions of the future. Washer attests to a Christian man recently sitting him down and telling him everything wrong in his life and ministry over the last few years and leading him to deep repentance. Now these men in particular don’t use charismatic theological vernacular like Piper, Lloyd Jones or Grudem might, but they do preserve and attempt to integrate the truth of these extraordinary experiences as edifying or providential within their theological frameworks (calling it “light unto feet” or “Quaker-like impressions”). In Christian institutes, Calvin posited: “[apostles and prophets...] were not established in the church as permanent ones, but only for that time during which churches were to be erected where none existed before, or where they were to be carried over from Moses to Christ. Still, I do not deny that the Lord has sometimes at a later period raised up apostles [...] as has happened in our own [Reformation] day.” Calvin was the original C Peter Wagner! That’s tongue in cheek, but it does open up interesting discussion. For a cessationist-favoring scholarly work that integrate these widespread occurrences/phenomena, you should check out garnet Howard Milne’s “the WCF and the cessation of special revelation.” On the charismatic side, check out Jon mark ruthven’s “on the cessation of the charismatic” or “what is wrong with Protestant theology.” My prayer is that you and other pastors from across the theological spectrum would adhere to James 3:1 with reverence and God’s wisdom as we handle these matters. God bless!!

I truly want to know this answer. How do you know that we aren't supposed to eagerly desire prophecy? Or the gifts of the spirit? What verses led you both to that conclusion? I am part of the AOG currently, my family started out Baptist when I was a child, then to Foursquare and AOG in my early 20's til now. I want to understand your perspective on these types of scriptures. If I am wrong I am fine being told so. The longer I live and the more I watch the behaviors in AOG with my own pastor, people in the hyper-charismatics, NAR movement, the more appalled I become. Anyway, just wanted clarification. The burden on me was overwhelming. I am so thankful for bringing me out of this movement.

@RefRockMama that is EXACTLY how the AOG is here too sister!! And that was my exact conclusions of it as well. I went there off and on growing up, but my husband was raised in it. It’s been so very hard as a daughter in law…. of a family that believes that way. I can’t pretend to be like them just to appease them. And so the rejection insued. 14 years later, it’s still hard.

@@DDK4411 Hey sister, I actually sent u a pretty long reply yesterday, but it looks like the YT decided to just delete it. My advice would be to look for a “reformed” theology church. Reformed will be the most adhering to the scriptures, and the least legalistic because they know their Bible. In my other comment I explained everything really well, but now I’m tired lol, so I’m just being blunt. AoG churches are actually following Word of Faith doctrine, which is complete heresy, and has caused so much spiritual damage to people, from the religious abuse they put on people. I’m really sorry to hear that you experienced that too, but I’m glad to hear that you are out of it now. If you want to learn more properly theology to help you understand where AOG is wrong, just search for videos about the heresies of the Word of Faith movement. Better yet, go watch Justin Peter’s series called Clouds Without Water, it’s a teaching seminar on this exact topic. Also look at Pirate Christian Radio, and search Chris’s content for his rebukes on Word of Faith teachings. And it Steven Kozar’s content! I think you would find the content really liberating, to hear really really educated faithful teachers, showing u why they are wrong, and what’s the Truth according to God. I found a lot of healing myself in that process. God bless you sis.

This has been a great discussion. I grew up Pentecostal in Newfoundland, Canada. I now live in Alberta, and thankfully God has lead me out of this denomination and into a wonderful Baptist church. I understand reformed theology, but I have a hard time trying to explain to family and friends there, that we grew up with lots of scripture taken out of context. They continue to quote (twisted) scripture to me about speaking in tongues, baptism of the Holy Spirit, the heavenly prayer language, etc. They are a tough bunch to discuss biblical truth with. Also, Newfoundland is made up of many tiny towns and there are not many (none practically) solid churches in this province, that teach sound theology. I often say that Newfoundland needs missionaries!! There is an amazing Baptist Church in Newfoundland’s only city, and they are doing church plants in small communities. Praise the Lord for this, because it is much needed in that province. I’m sure they are running up against the Pentecostals, but we know that Jesus will build His church!

Justin Peters just did a great documentary on the history of the Pentecostal movement. The amount of shady characters involved in this movement since the 1700s should be warning enough that something is up. Prior to the 1700s no biblically Christian sect did any speaking in tongues or shaking and falling on the ground that I know of. The Shakers were apparently the 1st in America to do this stuff. Prior to that any of this type of activity is related to Hinduism, and other eastern religions and occult practices. Speaking in tongues in the Bible was an actual real language that others could understand, not just a bunch of incoherent babbling you force yourself to do until it "feels" real. I have never felt like a bigger moron than the time i was told to just start talking in tongues and it would come to me. If it is truly of the spirit why do I need to force myself to start talking like this in order to make it happen? Of course, at the time, I was told that it was "the enemy", trying to make me feel weird so I wouldn't continue. No. it was my sound mind that God game me telling me something was off.

I was reading a pentecostal book in '91.. There were lots of Scriptures, which I believed, prayed, asking Holy Spirit in, and the book said to then speak in tongues.. I honestly with all my heart, wanted to, but didnt. Then several times these pastors, pentecostal, and God bless them because this was in jail and their pretty much the only ones who vistit.. but several walked people through tongues.. never happened. I did read in those circles for several years, along with Sacred Names, feast days, even sadly the higher critical stuff.. even though I believed Scriptures, and yeas, it creates a lot of doubt, and its all a part of the modern versions, Newer Bibles, texts, etc.. but I got pulled out, actually by reading that apologetic book, cant remember name, but it dealt with the higher critical views, how its infected everything.. Anyway, i devoured the Bible, believed it, but struggled a bit over the whole Spiritual gifts things.. and then... I started approaching reformed theology, after being prejudiced of ot from all the other circles.. but struggling as i was, I became acquainted with the creeds, etc.. and that sealed the deal, learned to understand gifts better, etc.. Im always learning, and a big one was the ever present war between Protestants over this and that, saddly, when we have real enemies who are doing everything they can to destroy us, literally. But also, the Bible version issue, I believe it's important. Anyway, wrote more than I intended. My little 2 bits.

My husband and I come from Southern Baptist backgrounds. The church we are currently members of is not. And when we became members and took their membership class it was presented as a church that was more non-denominational. They did say they believed in spiritual gifts, such as tongues, but it wasn’t until a few months after becoming members that the church started taking about “baptism of the Holy Spirit.” They would mention it, but not explain what they meant by it. Two Sundays ago, the lead pastor gave a sermon and he again brought up baptism of the Holy Spirit, and finally went a little further with his explanation, and made my husband and I both think that he and the church believe that baptism of the Holy Spirit is a secondary event, that happens after conversion. This is not something my husband and I believe or support. And several times in church people have prayed in “tongues” and there has been no interpretation. Which again, is something my husband and I don’t support (speaking in tongues without interpretation). They have also had two women give the message/teaching on Sundays, and address the whole congregation, which is a whole other area we are concerned about. All that to ask, are these issues ”non-essential” and not imperative enough to leave a church, or are the concerns my husband and I have valid and we should we talk with the pastor and let him know we may begin looking for another church?

Paul says this in 1 corinthians 14:3 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. I've grown up in AOG. After becoming an adult I haven't been a church member anywhere for 10yrs due to work. I tend to he more a calvinist now after studying scripture and testing what I was taught against scripture. However I still hold that the gifts are available for today because I've been a witness and partaker of these things. Everyone is given a gift from the Holy Spirit. Not everyone grows in it. Often times when I come across believers who deny that the gifts aren't active today, It reminds me of the story in Matthew "But Jesus said, "A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family." He didn't do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference. And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief."

Acts 8:14-17 “When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of GOD, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, they had simply been baptized IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. Then Peter laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon the sorcerer SAW that THE SPIRIT was given at the laying on of hands he offered them money…..” Now WHAT did Simon see?? WHY had these people who had already made a profession of faith and been “baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” not received the Holy Spirit?? That is all that people today do! Today people believe and are water baptized. What is this about? Perhaps you need to consider this question. Did something change between then and now concerning the baptism of the Holy Spirit? The first followers of Christ received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the upper room but many others received the same Holy Spirit such as what happened when Peter went to the centurion’s house and spoke to the gentiles that believed and the Holy Spirit fell on them. When a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit there is something that happens that people can perceive. I have just given you three examples of scripture showing this. People thought that the first believers that received the baptism of the Holy Spirit were drunk! Sadly, we hardly see a change in some people who simply decide to repeat the sinners prayer these days. ‘Just say these words and you are in!’ No. Getting truly saved requires the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 2:3-5 Paul tells us, “ I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching WERE NOT with wise and persuasive words, but with A DEMONSTRATION OF THE SPIRIT’S POWER so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom but on GOD’s POWER.” What is our faith in today? There is much in that chapter that Paul relays that has to do with the need for less of man and more of God’s power. Today so many people rely on their own strength. The church works on the outside of people and does not show them how to mature spiritually. Speak a certain way, dress a certain way, give a certain way but how does the saint develop their ability to hear the Holy Spirit who Jesus himself said would lead us and guide us into all truth? Do you know where that new born from above spirit is located within the person? Can you distinguish between the thought of your mind and what your spirit is saying within you? God is spirit and those who worship Him MUST do so in spirit and in truth. We are spirit beings that live in a body and have a soul (the mind will and emotions). It is the responsibility of those leaders mentioned in Ephesians 4 to build up the saints so that they can become spiritually mature and attain the fullness of the stature of Christ. Does anyone take that charge seriously?? We have infant stage Christians sitting in the pews most of their lives. They never learn how to help themselves much less minister to others! Simon the sorcerer saw something when Peter laid his hands on the people! What did he see?? Simon had been so impressed about the signs and wonders that Phillip and his team were doing. Then when Peter laid hands on them Simon offered them money so he would be able to do what Peter did for these people. It was visible. It was something very noticeable when those people had hands laid on them by Peter and it WAS an experience separate from salvation for them. The church has gone for two thousand years without those signs and wonders even though the Lord Jesus said that believers would do the same as he did and even greater. Every time a real move of the Spirit breaks out the Pharisees start pointing finger and finding fault. “Those people are not holy!” Well, the Corinthians were not holy. They were new believers and still quite carnal but they had the gifts of the Spirit functioning within that church. It got messy sometimes but Paul did not tell them to stop the move of the Spirit. He told them that they were SUPPOSED to have gifts functioning among the body of believers, just keep it orderly. Today the body does nothing. Nothing. Oh, you can join a group for a Bible study but God is not supposed to work through the body today as He once did. Church is a show for the people to come and watch instead of sharing what God has shown them through the week. Churches have thrown out the power of God in order to look good to who? You look fine to the world. You have a form of godliness but no power.

The nature of New Testament prophetic revelation is seen in the examples provided for us. For example, prophetic revelation is given for the guidance of the church (Acts 11:27 - 30 and 13:1 - 3) or for guidance of individuals (Paul in Acts 21:9 - 11 and Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:18, 4:14). No where do we see that the gift of prophecy used for the purpose of providing new doctrine (although, Ephesians 2:20 & 3:5 could be a counter argument to my claim - worth discussing further if anyone is interested). The examples we have are no threat to the completed canon. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:3 prophecy is for the encouragement of the church, providing specific guidance for an individual or church that desires to know the mind of the Lord in a specific situation.

How then DO we properly interpret 1Cor14:1...eagerly desiring prophecy (1:24:02)? (This is a sincere question, not a disagreement with your teaching.) Is it still an active gift as we saw in Acts and elsewhere in the NT?

Ask yourself: is 1 Corinthians written for the church in general throughout time? Or is it partly addressed only to the Corinthian church? How does Scripture inform Scripture on this matter?

Just eagerly read all the major and minor prophets of the Bible. Then throw in all the prophecies of the New Testaments. You will discover your lifespan doesn't have enough eagerness to read and understand and 'own' them all on this side of eternity.

I just wish there was a church based on book of Acts! Why nitpick? Why limit God? I don't think tongues should be emphasized as proof of baptism as it's too easily faked. Some pagan churches Babel.
