Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today, i get another opportunity to test out our new 2024 Western Star 49X with a Miller Industries, Century 9055XL. The 9055XL is a 50 ton integrated (non-rotating) 3-stage boom. The XL is for Extra Long reach and has the same capacity as the standard 50T 3-stage. A customer calls us to tow one of their trucks off the interstate in an extremely busy stretch of road near an interchange for two interstates. This is possibly the most dangerous type of job for our industry....just a plain, basic, tow. You will see in the video that I have several very close calls. I SHOULD have called for our traffic control truck to help with traffic, however, I was so far south of the shop, that I could have the truck hooked up and ready by the time our traffic control unit showed up. Even though this is just a standard, everyday tow, many viewers have asked for this type of video. So, I use the new Western Star 9055XL and I show off the new Feniex lighting package with the ability to switch between red & blue lights while on the shoulder to amber lights for towing. And I need all the lighting help I can get to keep from getting run over on this job. PLEASE....SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER!!! Hope you enjoy them. So far, I am loving this truck and what it can do!!! Thank you, God, for blessing our family and our business. Watch as we continue to receive God's blessings. There is much more to come!!! I hope you enjoy this video!!!
We have a difficult and dangerous job and we take it very seriously, that doesn't mean we can't have fun and enjoy our work. We strive to be polite, professional, efficient, and safe...and still can have fun. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

Ron, you are almost always the safety guru! Shocked to see you do this job with nothing. Cones at the minimum. Maybe light bar as soon as range permits.
@RonPratt

You are right. I got ahead of myself on this one. I thought the cones and safety lights had been put in the truck, but I failed to check before I excitedly took off in the shiny new truck to help a customer. Plain and simple, I should have checked to make certain the truck was fully stocked or called for traffic control. No excuses.....I messed up and thankfully, it didn't cost me or someone else their lives. As soon as I returned to the shop, I went and bought some "puck" lights. The store we normally buy traffic cones from was out of stock. I also had Oscar install Feniex QSMs on the wireless light bar. So, now I can do like I've done in the past, stop behind the broken down truck and trailer, install the light bar and turn on it's emergency lights, set out cones if necessary, and then move my truck in front of the breakdown. We have since, also installed the new HAAS Alert Safety Cloud system which transmits a signal from our truck to alert drivers there is a "tow truck ahead". Again, I messed up and I am owning my mistake. Hopefully others can learn from it as I did. This will not happen to me again. Thanks for watching out for me. God bless.

I would dispatch Traffic Control with just about every highway-side job. Have it be a larger sized truck, with a "truck mounted attenuator," the crash bumpers used by DOT crews. You would have the extra protection, and extra hands to get hooked up, and out of there, faster. I would also employ an orange sign with the words "SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER," made to DOT specs (size, reflectivity, etc.).

I had the benefit of parents who taught me what to pay attention to on the roads, but it still always amazes me how situationally unaware people can be. I'm always scanning far ahead and keeping an eye out for vehicles on the shoulder. I don't care if there is an emergency vehicle on scene or if the car is abandoned with no one around...I'm moving over well in advance of getting to the car and leaving space for others to get over as well.

Ron, videos like this prove why the tow truck driver is the unsung hero of the highway. Folks need to pay attention. So glad you are safe because watching your videos every Friday has been my weekly tradition for years now. Can you put strobes on the new star's tow lightbar like the Tator has? Those seem to help. Also, another idea is a portable arrow board. Think scene light but its an arrow. Set it behind the trailer. You'd have to build it as I have never seen any in production. Stay safe, watch your six always. God Bless

You need a portable tripod with a sandbag and a flashing arrow on top you can set up a couple hundred feet back while you're hooking up to help warn traffic. That was so scary with people not moving over. It seems the new generation of trucker doesn't just automatically move over when they see a vehicle on the shoulder. Add on I am surprised Guardian Angel doesn't make something like that.

Big van with high visibility livery carrying lots of cones and lights ect, light bars on the roof and a big fold up digital sign board in the middle of the roof, can show arrows and Slow Down messages. We can only pray for your safety when you have to do jobs like that! A remote light bar looks essential for every rescue vehicle or maybe some kind of telescopic mast with red and blue flashers that goes high enough to be seen from behind. They only really take notice of blue.

The entire time that you were working on that truck I was holding my breath for you I've been watching your show for a long time and never in my life have I seen people that wouldn't get over for you just doesn't make any sense if you see emergency lights you're supposed to slow down and move into the other lane but some people don't understand that God bless you my friend and please stay safe

To defend the other drivers: all the flashing lights on the Western Star won't help if there is a semi blocking it, plus many of the drivers were two wide so they didn't have room in time to move over. Putting the light bar and cones out first could help some in the dark time. Someone pumping their hands to slow down after they already passed, they may not see you until too late. Accompanying with the traffic control truck should be mandatory with all busy roads, that is its purpose - unless its was the weekend and no one is there to drive it. I have seen you called the police for help with traffic before. At least after all these years, you are still humble to learn from your mistakes and you freely admit to them. Also, the windsock is a huge improvement. Thanks for posting and God Bless.

Many of these drivers have never been stuck on the side of a highway, and have no sensation of the speeds. I had absolutely no idea before.

Unfortunately, some of those vehicles had nowhere to go as the left lane was blocked by other traffic. Perhaps they should have stopped until it was safe to pull over. I too was a little surprised that you didn't call in traffic control back up PD or someone from the shop. All in all, a dangerous situation negotiated as only you and your team can - safely!! Greetings from the UK. God bless.

I’m a former tow truck driver my boss retired & sold the business . Our interstate up here is busy & most drivers do 80 mph here , picking up a vehicle here I would call dispatch to the police department to have at least 2 squads behind the vehicle I was going to tow & would always use the ditch side controls of the truck because vehicles would not slow down or pull over to the other lane .

the joke going around for years has also been "those that cant do, teach" well its been obvious for years that those that have never done the job before are going to tell you how to do it. (i e. politicians). you have to love how these people have never even been inside of a truck but they will make laws on what you can and can not do with it as if they have been doing it forever.

I’m only 23 years old and learned from one of the first years of driving to get over for anystopped vehicle. And relative to these semis, I drive a ram 2500. God bless you for doing this dangerous work. One rock flung up at the right timing from one of those tires can lead to a very bad day.

Hi Ron, ever thought about having made a battery powered portable light bar arrow that you could put on the rear of the truck or on the road on arrival, it could say move over.

I must say I love the channel and I love the new star of the channel, but I’ve seen five videos in a row of the new western star. Don’t forget your other trucks. That’s what made the channel is all the trucks not just one.

Hi, Ron ! UGLY Call ! Shouldn't have been, but.... I AM NOT A 'SOFA SPECIALIST ' Telling you what to do !!! You're the pro & I GREATLY respect you, and the jobs you do! (Tow + Videos + ...) 3 thoughts... Maybe a Traffic Safety Truck dispatched with Tow on Interstates, (or other appropriate Roads) It'd get Early Warning lights, signs, cones positioned BEHIND YOU. I know it's an additional expense, and increased exposure, but safety IS safety. 2- A portable light bar to attach to the rear of disabled vehicle loaded to EVERY tow truck. (I'm actually surprised it's not required, considering how overly regulated the Feds and States have gotten!] I'm Not trying to spend YOUR money, just want everybody SAFE ! Maybe 4/5 CONES (and/or FLAGS) to place behind the disabled. They're NOT going to STOP anything, but it may help by increasing HI-VIS ⚠️ warning devices Sorry for the LONG comment!

Morning Ron from West TN . I understand some of the trucks couldnt get over due to other traffic . but they could have at least slowed down. 😡 Then there were the steering wheel holders & 4 wheelers both that dont care either way.😡 The left lane wide open & they still wont get over!!😡 Sadly People dont think about others on the roadside until it affects them. then they realize how dangerous it really is . I understand because my brother owns & operates a Mobile Roadside Truck & trailer repair service . Ive been out there with him many times through the years . TN has the slow down move over law. I forget how much the fine is . but if youre caught not obeying the law the fine is a heafty one. & it should be . I will come down off my soapbox now . Be safe out there in "the kill zone" Ron. Mack

Some sort of flashing lights on a tripod, set up behind the tractor trailer would be handy.
