Tool Tuesday Ep.11: Abby Picks the Tools

Abby wanted to come poke around in the the old tool chests while I was in the shop working and ask "what is it" on some of the tools she found. She definitely found some unique and fun tools and I even get to give the viewers a little history lesson about some of the tool boxes I have.

Maybe Abby could pick two or three tools beforehand and then actually use them in the video. Her interest is genuine.

I’d say yes I love the enthusiasm. As a new student I feel the same way. Showing how those tools apply on a lathe, mill or any machine is awesome! Keep the videos coming you guys I’ve learned a lot thank you!

There's nothing better than the smell of an old shop. Doesn't matter if it's wood or metal, but it's best when there's a combination of things. The grease, oil, WD40, Hoppes #9 all come together to create a bouquet that's simply beyond wonderful. Makes you feel really sad for all those people out there who will never get to experience the wonder for themselves.

Mine either. Don’t like the chips and dirt and don’t want them in the house. Groan…have to take my shoes off inside the door. Could be worse though. She’s a mighty good cook.

Maybe the game could be "Abby Guesses." Adam picks three tools that he thinks she doesn't know, and Abby gets to guess what they might be, then Adam explains.

As a child, grandparents on both sides had farms and horses. The smell of a horse barn is soothing to me. Some people, unfortunately, feel panic at the smell of a horse barn. Smell is all tied to experience and emotion. It is wonderful that you both feel comfort in the atmosphere of the machine shop.

I love the enthusiasm and curiosity that Abby brings. Through her eyes, we get to see ordinary things that we've all been around forever with a new sense of wonder. Please do it again. I love the unplanned tangent that derailed the thread file demo too. Tangents are where the most fun is found.

Oldest game in any shop "stup the chump" LOL my kids try to stup me all the time. After they got old enough, they finally realized that if I own it, I know what it is now they bring me stuff or take pictures and try to get me now.

Adam, when I was down there to visit you, which I enjoyed very much. I regret, I didn't have a chance to meet Abbey, as I remember, she was in the house preparing to go out. She is definitely "a keeper"!!!!

ABSOLUTELY... Please continue down this path. I found myself picking various tools out as Abby went through the toolboxes. I love how Abby appreciates your craft. I've been a machinist for over 40 years and the only interaction I have with my wife about the shop is "you smell like oil, go shower..." but it is my happy place!

* Your enthusiasm is contagious. * Do what you enjoy, your enthusiasm is what makes your stuff enjoyable to watch. * Some folks may not go for some types of video, but you can never please everybody. * If you teach Abby lathe work or welding for example, there are likely to be things that you need to explain to her as a complete beginner that you'd never thought to say to camera when narrating your own work, so it sounds like a fabulous idea to me, as long as you enjoy it

To see Abby getting to know the tools is one thing, but for her to manufacture a part is quite another, that would be kinda epic to see her make her own tool to add to this shop! that would be something epic!

What a great video.. I am not a machinist but my father had a tool and die shop. Right before I came in to relax and watch a video I was in my garage looking for a tool I needed in the Kennedy machinists' chest I got from my father when he passed on. I understand the love of old tools. And your describing what a tool is and how it is used is a something the internet needs more of.

I just had a good chuckle at Abby when she opened the drill index and leaned in, took a deep breath and exclaimed "Smells good!" and I should say that I am a very olfactory motivated person, when you smell something in particular, it can transport you back to a time/place of years ago...

I have often been surprised that with all of the old tools that you have that you don’t have a Cadillac. When I worked at Rockwell a Cadillac was used a lot for setting height gauges and bore gauges. I too love the oil smell of an old machine shop.

Nothing as convenient as a Cadillac or height master for checking parts with multiple dimensions. So much that I bought a used one and still don’t have my shop set up. 😊

Sometimes, I take my daughter out to my toolbox and show her what some of the newer and unusual tools are. She has some interest and knows that they are hers when I go. I like this video and wish my daughter was as curious and eager to learn as Abby is. I would love for this to be a recurring series.

OK, when I first read the video description, I almost passed on it. Boy, that would have been a mistake. That was so much fun watching Abby discover new an interesting tools. Sure, I knew most of them, the RPM gauge was something I hadn't seen before, but her fascination was so entertaining. Oh yeah. I know that machine shop smell. I wasn't a machinist, I'm a machine tech, but I've been in enough machine shops that I could smell that smell whenever Abby mentioned it.

Awesome! I remember doing this with my father and grandfathers. I've spent 10's of thousands collecting tools and machines, some I'll probably never use. Great episode, do more. One guy suggested having Abby (Hi Abby, if you're reading this) pick a tool or two to use. Love you guys, keep it going

I love it. As someone that's been around some machining but not actually done it I enjoy seeing the tools of the trade and learning about them. I also have a fondness for tools as a mechanic/welder of 45 years so there's that too. I can totally see Abby out there making chips with you Abom and I can't wait to see it. I think she brings some great vibes to the shop, the channel and she certainly loves you.

Great idea! Love Abby's interest and the history of your family. I learned something about the RPM gauge as I inherited some tools from my Uncle and that was included. Always wondered what it was. Thanks for the info and definately do some more.
