Two years ago I put out a video called THE 13 MOST OVERRATED TRACTOR FEATURES! DON'T YOU AGREE?!? Well in the two years since I've had lots more time on tractors and have an updated list for you. So don't go paying for products, brands, and tractor concepts that you don't need. Watch this video and be a more informed customer!
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

Diff lock is like the 8th wonder of the world!! I wish everyone would offer lockers for the front axle too! I would for sure pay for it. Lockers and Rim Guard in ALL 4ea wheels is a huge multiplier on what you can do with the tractor. I just bought a Massey Ferguson 5711 Dyna 4 and added 2,800 lbs of rim guard plus 660 lbs of wheel weights. Lockers + added ballast = success. Great content!

I’ve heard filling front tractor tyres with liquid ballast will place pressure on the front axles they are not designed to take. However I kind of question this as most smaller tractors come with a loader that is designed to carry a lot heavier weight than the amount of weight liquid in the tyres.
@genewilliams7497
@genewilliams7497 Год назад
The referenced tractor weighs 10,200 lbs with out the loader. Add 2000 lbs for the loader and the loader is rated to lift 4500 lbs to full height. The liquid ballast only adds 500 lbs to each front tire I feel safe that my tractor will handle the 500lbs per bearing perfectly fine without issues. I have a 2012 new holland t6050 that has a lot more ballast than that and no issues with 10 ea years of farming use. I wouldn’t weight the front tires on a compact or sub compact tractor as they are not engineered very heavy and are for home owner use mainly.

@@genewilliams7497 thanks for the information. My tractor is a Kubota MX5200 which is either a large compact tractor or small utility tractor depending how you assess it. Looking at it when the loader is on it looks big but when the loader is off it looks a lot smaller. I won't fill the front tyres up with water as I don't want to over stress the front axel. Usually I have the loader off when the tractor is doing non loader work, like mowing. I prefer to use the tractor that way as it feels a lot smaller and its easier to see what is going on.

I like the diff lock on my John Deere. I brush hog a lot of fields for people. A couple of them have really steep berms around ponds that I have to back up because they're so steep and yes, I have the ROPS up and seatbelt on, the diff lock gets me to the top since all the traction is designed for forward motion. (I have ag tires on it) the berms are so steep I can't back all the way to the top without it. I'm not too brave when it comes to hills so there's a fair amount of pucker factor involved too. Keep the videos coming, they're great.

Completely agree with the clamp on forks. I tried to skimp and went with clamp ons only to use them twice and then went out to buy the quick attach ones. Backhoe on the other hand, I didn't think I'd need it so I didn't buy it with my tractor figuring is just rent a mini for the day of I needed it. Here I am 4 months later buying the backhoe for my tractor.

When my Ford 640 gave up the ghost I started loooking for a small tractor, with a FEL, that could go more places (4wd) and I had no interest in a rear excavator. What I found was a 1025R with 60 hours that had a 54D mower deck ('meh), 120R FEL, and Versa Turf tires, rear wheel weights, and some warranty left ('21). I don't mind adding a 4 ft brush cutter for our pasture and trails as I sold my ten year old 5ft cutter for what I paid for it. But I have used the belly mower and it isn't bad. And has the advantage of adding/removing quickly. A bit of overkill for our yard (that is 30% grass and 70% moss, sphagnum, other green weeds and hickory nuts), but a back-up if our trusty Husquvarna YTH24v48 (that my wife pilots) gets ill.

The diff lock works really well on uneven terrain when the front axle hits it's limit on articulation and one of your back wheels comes off the ground. You're going nowhere fast without it in that situation.

I have some Frontier attachments. I have the Frontier box blade and their 60 inch tiller; comparing them to aftermarket products of the same use, so far the Frontier attachments are well worth the little extra money. They are well made and use heavier/thicker metal, and they are engineered and built to be repair friendly from what I can tell since I have not actually broken one.

It all depends on where you live and what tires your using, My ’97 JD 770, I bought in ’98, the 4x4 is engaged 75% of the time when I’m on the dirt (always pushing or pulling something) and 0% when I’m on the pavement and it’s still running fine. Running in 4x4 on dry pavement is really hard on the axles. Here in the PNW I use the Diff lock about 5% of the time when in 4x4 mode even with my R1’s as the mud/clay is horrendous. My new LS MT235he is around 1000# heavier but with the R4’s (no choice) it was either huge ruts or almost getting stuck with both 4x4 and the lockers. I had to use the 770 most of the time in the mud this last winter/spring to do what I needed. Pulling stumps and logs this summer I had to use the locker most of the time on both tractors. As far as the backhoe, I picked up a WoodMax 3pt a couple of years ago as 70 hr work weeks and getting older I just wasn’t going to use the shovel and the summer hard pan digging with the bucket in rocks and clay was like a jack hammer. I didn’t know I was going to buy the LS when I got the BH otherwise I would have got the BH with it just for the frame mount. Easy on and easy off. Easier to dig a small hole or place stuff with a 15” bucket than a 60”’ bucket, especially with the hyd thumb. I’ve used it a heck of a lot more than I realized I would, easily halved the time it would have taken not using the BH. Love the QA forks (42”) on my LS, another thing I used way more then I thought. Great for picking up the stumps I dug up with the BH and not to mention the rounds, logs, branch’s, etc.

I like my midmount mower on my subcompact MF GC1723e. I only use it 3 or 4 times a year, but I like the cut I get. And, after detaching the FEL and any rear attachments, the tractor is very maneuverable in some tighter spots. The putting on and taking off used to be a pain, but I'm much better at it now and use the event as a time to do some regular maintenance and cleaning. Of course, as a retiree only working on my own projects, I don't have to be in a hurry.

I bought my 1025r used and it came with the backhoe. I haven't used the tractor a lot but will say most of what I've done has been with the loader. The backhoe IS nice to have though and if nothing else it works great for ballast. What really surprised me is the tractor is shorter (length wise) with the backhoe than it is with the 3pt and a ballast box. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I agree with everything you mentioned! I use the locking rear dif in situations where 1 wheel may be spinning from say mowing on a slope. If it gets too bad and traction and stability is really compromised, I'll occasionally use the 4wd. MM mower deck I too think is over rated. If I lived in a perfect world, I would put that $$ towards a zero turn.

I never understood the power of the diff lock for a long time, until the last year or so. My friend had just got his little John Deere 2305 back from major repairs to the front axle. He was told by a tech that it's not a good idea to run the tractor in 4×4 consistently... especially with any amount of weight added to the loader as it can be harmful to front axle. Now don't get me wrong... sometimes we have jobs that just absolutely require the 4×4, but we found that we try to avoid constant use of it as much as we can. He encouraged me to start using the diff lock, and in most cases it makes all the difference in getting through awkward and difficult situations where traction is an issue. It's a standard add on for good reason.
@mikehaines6176
@mikehaines6176 Год назад
All good points and I agree with them all, particularly the OEM attachments. Don't go bargain basement but there's nothing wrong with a good 'off brand.' The rear diff was a godsend on the old 2wd tractors of my youth. When pulling loads or heavy equipment on soft ground, that rear diff was the bomb. On the current 4wd tractors, it's less necessary.

Love my backhoe, is it as convenient as an excavator, no definitely not. You just can't move material as efficiently with a backhoe as you can with an excavator. That being said I've found that it can come in very handy. I put a mechanical thumb on it and can use it as a poor man's grapple to pick up everything from rock to brush to logs and old railroad ties. My thought is that it's cheaper than buying an excavator and very convenient to have, and I don't have to drive 2 hours to go get a mini excavator. Also makes for a great ballast weight.

Bought my 1025R with the backhoe attachment. Have around 50 hrs on it and probably just over 40 hrs of the 50 has been using the backhoe. And I still have more time to put on it using it. Renting would have cost more with the number of tree stumps I am taking out of the yard. Thought about pallet forks but not sure about it, as the lifting capacity of the loader is not that great. After seeing your comparison between Summit, JD and Kubota lifting, I would have preferred to go Summit.
@brandtwebber5761
@brandtwebber5761 Год назад
I get you on the lifting capacity, my tractor is a frame size above yours, but I will say my forks are on my machine as much as my bucket and I don't travel without them even when they probably won't be used and most times aren't. They are just that handy.

@stephenoverstreet9898
@stephenoverstreet9898 Год назад
If you have a 2WD tractor a diff lock can definitely make the difference between getting out of a sticky situation and not. I have an old Massey 231 that would get itself stuck all the time. If diff lock is all you’ve got, you’ll try it to get out. I have tried diff lock in my new 4WD tractor when stuck and it works somewhat, but if you get a 4WD tractor stuck then you will quickly go past using the diff lock and go straight to the bucket.

The backhoe dispute is always fun.... I did buy the backhoe as I had a big project for it... l did decide to use my machine as a side hustle which has turned into a full time job. The backhoe has been a good money maker and has paid for itself many times over. If I buy a second tractor then I won't need another hoe, but if I am upgrading and selling the old machine, there will be a hoe without question. A mini ex can out dig a hoe without question, but all it does is dig....

Good take on the serious tractor modifications stuff. I have no use for that. Doesn't make any sense. If you want a bigger tractor just buy one. I think that all stems from the diesel truck world. All these guys with their diesel trucks that just drive them. Got to have that bragging right thing. I also agree with your stance on implements. The major full line manufacturers don't have the r&d budget to do some of the attachment. I've been finding that more and more the small attachment guys. It's their specific business so they put their heart and soul and have all their r&d for it. Biggest case in point is drive around the country and look at all these mega combine machines harvesting a lot of them don't run the OEM header . I actually had this discussion with a major company rep and they didn't care if you bought the matching attachment that came with the machine. But in the compact world it seems to be opposite of that everybody throws some kind of incentive package with attachments...

The most underrated tractor feature is a ROPS for old tractors still in use. Have two Ford 8n's. Can't afford a modern tractor. Need ROPS for safety. Have found rumors of units, appears none are actually available. Have enrolled in the National ROPS Rebate Program. It's seriously underfunded and not useful if one can't find a ROPS. Have struggled to find a shop to fabricate the NIOSH cost-effective ROPS design. No interest.

If your objective with a larger rural property is to build trails and do culverts in creeks or clear stumps, you will use a mini excavator more than your tractor. Rent one if you have a couple of projects or buy one if you have lots, but either way, don't waste your money on a tractor mounted backhoe. An air ride seat on a new tractor is a costly option, but I have never heard anyone regret the expense.

I had a lot of ditching/drain pipe to do and scoured the used sources for tractor backhoes and got down to the point where I looked at the price of the HF unit I almost ordered one. I really only needed a powered hand shovel. In the end I used a hand shovel and dug when I could and quit when I got tired, saved from spending on going to the gym, I just got the seeding done a couple days ago so it was not a fast project, but it's done. So i decided I would drop the brush hog to make loading it easier... well the battery was disconnected so instead of just hooking it up i decided to check the fuse panel to make sure it would ne safe to hook back up the battery and i noticed a warning on the fuse panel about fuse f11 and f12. see the problem was is it would start but he couldn't get it to move. well this warning said if the f11 fuse was in the f12 spot the tranny was disabled so i swapped the fuse location and it worked fine and has been ever since. took me all of a few seconds to find the problem and fix it. so i avoided a huge huge bill by reading the fuse panel warning

So many considerations when selecting tractors and attachments. And one universal solution. Saving money is not the same as buying cheap. Buying cheap will only cost more.

My Kubota dealer actually giving me a better deal on a 5ft Land pride 5 foot blade and it will offset. I was surprised. I will have to wait but, I am fine with that. I wish your Dirt dog brand would offset on the 5 foot then we could have had a conversation. Agree o n the Backhoe as most of us are better off just renting a mini excavator for our projects. They payoff would be decades for our situation.

Tym/ rural king tractors have the best overall backhoe design in my opinion now. I can put my backhoe on and off without removing any 3 point stuff off the tractor and it’s 6500$ for tym backhoe vs Deere or kubota that’s now 12000$ I can go from my backhoe to a 3 point attachment in under 10 minutes by my self and go from 3 point back to backhoe in same time frame without help.

Yanmar tractors have a 10 year warranty on the engine, transmission, and axles. That includes the DPF. I really wish they got a little more love. They still make engines for Deere and several others in additon to making their own tractors and commercial excavation equipment. They are a little more expensive than many of the South Korean tractors, but less expensive than their orange Japanese cousins, and quite a bit less expesive than green American tractors.

I totally agree on the mower deck. I purchased a 2020 2025r and really contemplated whether or not getting a mower deck would truly be a value-add attachment. Although it would have been useful, I already have a ride-on tracter/mower and for the cost of the drive-over mower deck, I could have purchased a brand new zero-radius ride-on. I am very happy that I did not get the deck and saved the money.

I disagree on the diff-lock. Diff-lock is way faster than switching into 4x4 when grabbing a scoop of loose dirt for transport. Or when mowing in slippery damp conditions. If I'm ever forced to downgrade to a riding mower I'll want diff-lock.

Man, im glad i didn't see or just forgot where you said a diff lock was overrated?! I mean heck, if you think about going from 1 spinning tire to 2 spinning tires, having a diff lock is JUST AS BIG as having 4wd! Because if you've got 4wd with 2 open diffs you still only spin 2 wheels! At that point a diff lock is getting you just as big a result as the 4wd system! Now, i understand the difference in traction available at either end due to weight and weight shifting around from implement use etc and how 4wd is different from a diff lock in that way, but in my mind the real answer is BOTH anyway. THREE wheel drive, baby! I wish i had a front locker, but alas.. I can see how someone might not care as much about 4wd or diff lock if the only machines they've operated are fairly large. Weight is basically the biggest factor in traction. If you run heavy enough machines you barely need a diff lock or 4wd in the first place. But on the smaller machines, if they didn't have one or both they'd be practically useless! SCUTs are 4wd because they have to be! You need all the help you can get when you're running a 1500lb machine around. Whenever you see small old japanese tractors that were 2wd for sale, they ALWAYS have a bush hog or a post hole digger on them, because they already found out.. if you have no weight, no 4wd, and no diff lock, you can't pull anything that doesn't already roll!!

Good advice especially on the backhoe. Unless a person knows they will have multiple need for a backhoe or you know you can make decent coin on the side, just rent one or hire the job and be done.

What sort of terrain do you drive your tractor in? If it’s flat and dry then yes there is no need for a diff lock. If it’s hilly, wet and uneven terrain then being able to drive both back wheels at times is needed.
@TelescopeJunky

@@kdegraa I am in hilly country so lots of hills and uneven terrain BUT I do not have many situations where it is muddy, wet, etc.. Whenever I do have a challenge I just flip on 4WD and it gets me out of the situation. Never have used locking diff ever but I hope to someday! My comment was not meant to say it is not useful just that I have never used it yet (and I feel left out!). 🙂

Are you familiar with the term "jumped the shark"? Came from the downturn of when the Happy Days show lost momentum. I've appreciated all your videos when I was trying to learn about tractors prior to my purchase of mine. Since, I have even bought one of your stump buckets. But I believe your channel has finally "jumped the shark" , when you signed up and since are promoting the summit tractors. I'm sure that you got a great deal with them.. Seems that you want to kick around deer products and such that don't match your new endeavors. How fast can you switch that summit bucket for your stump bucket? Sorry, I am unsubscribing today...

It comes down to what you are going to do with your equipment and the soil/topography of your property. I have very little flat ground so a diff lock is a must. For me a MMM and backhoe make little sense. A zero turn gives a better cut in less time without the hassle of dis/mounting when you want to use your tractor for dirt work. Like you said, for most projects you're better off renting a mini-excavator.

Backhoe attachments are well overrated, just hire a mini Excavator or buy an old backhoe if you have a more frequent use for one. Bolt on pallet forks are useless. Multicouplers are a great idea but you have to have absolutely spotless when you connect them back up or they leak. Diff locks absolutely essential with proper ballast they transform the pushing and pulling power of the tractor and also help keeping the tractor running dead straight when you want perfect straight lines.

My local John Deere had a couple 48” Frontier box blades still in the shipping rack at a substantially lower price. While looking at it there’s definitely a difference in the gauge metal compared to most of the aftermarket blades. Not sure that makes a whole lot of difference on a 25HP tractor but it’s definitely better built. I didn’t get a backhoe on my 1025R because I could rent a compact excavator for the one or two times I might need a backhoe over the next 10 years. I use my differential lock quit often even when cutting grass. Best feature for the minimal cost it takes to add it at the factory, even on a lawn tractor.
