We're gaining a lot of experience on tractors, skidsteers, and more recently in UTV's as well. And we sell attachments for all three. So we thought we'd share the ways we would think about a major purchase like this if we could only buy one.
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

I have 8 acres and a long 75 yard driveway. I started out with a Cub Cadet garden tractor with a mower and snow plow. Living in the Lake Erie snow belt (up to 200” a season) it was better than shoveling but slow when we got feet of snow. I bought an atv and it was great but as I got older the cold started bothering me so I bought a Ranger 800 6x6 with a cab and heat. Best purchase hands down for snow plowing. Then I decided a tractor with a loader would be helpful so I bought a JD 2025R. If I could only have one it would be a tractor but having both makes life much easier.

I use my Polaris Ranger almost daily on our 25 acres, but I wouldn't live on any acreage without a tractor. It's the most useful tool I've ever bought. It can handle almost every task the others two can albeit a bit slower. I think a skid steer would be really handy if you have the extra cash laying around, but for most people renting probably makes more sense.

Great Video!!! I had a farm (cows and horses) and used my 4-wheeler and tractor on a daily basis. That said most of my property was cleared. My skid loader sat most of the time. I rented an excavator for ditch/drainage maintenance. If I had it to do over, I would get a tractor (based on need), and UTV and rent anything else. Glad to see these types of videos for those getting started.

A 100 hp class track loader is pushing $100k with the cab. You can get a lot of tractor and attachments for much less than that. I would love a skid steer, but I can't justify the expense. I also think having a UTV in addition to a tractor is a good choice. They really serve different purposes for us.

Transportation is the main factor for me. Water access only property, Even if I had a barge with enough capacity for a skid steer I think the draft of the barge would keep me from getting to my property. 1025r is the tool I have right now but kind of wish I went with a 2025r or similar sized tractor just for the extra ground clearance with the bigger tires. Great video. Things I would add to this. Skid steers specially track ones are a rough ride, no suspension and running on 8 hours is rough on you back. Where the tractor is better and the utv is even better. If you have to run up and down the road the skid steer isnt a great choice. Most times you end up loading and trailing it a 1 mile down the road where the tractor or utv can be driven a mile. Also a big factor is if you plan on running the equipment on nice landscaped yard/sod. Skid steers tear up the ground
@jimmcknight3021
@jimmcknight3021 Год назад
Great job on comparing. I have heard over the long haul a skid steer costs about twice the price per hour over a tractor. I would be curious what others think on that. Totally agree that a tractor and skid steer will last a lot longer than a utv. Although Kubota makes a nice diesel one but I still think the other parts won't last as long as the engine versus t h e other 2 machines.
@aguyindallas
@aguyindallas Год назад
I first bought a Ranger, used only for hunting on leased land. I then purchased some land and bought a Kubota L2501. It works perfect for me. My only regret is not getting a cab tractor. It would certainly be warmer or cooler as needed, but truly keep me from being so dang dusty. A factor I never even considered.

Tractor has been most important from the start. Also recall that unlike a tractor, a skid-steer or track-steer tends to tear up the surface much more wherever one makes a turn, if that's a concern in lawn areas for example. BTW, I have an older industrial loader tractor, meaning 3/4 yard bucket with heavy lift and large dirt capacity. I have often commented I am glad I don't have a smaller "compact tractor" which would require many more loader trips.

I have an ATV, 2000 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4. We bought it new and it is still in very good condition. It is very handy on our small property (5 acres). I am buying a small tractor soon. Like, maybe this Friday. I think the two will serve most of my needs. I am not buying a backhoe for the tractor as I think the very few times I need one doesn't justify the purchase. I will rent when I need that.
@kipcudd7253
@kipcudd7253 Год назад
I'd love to have a skid steer but the expense and cost of maintenance keeps me from doing that. But after owning 4 small tractors with loaders and no more property that I have a 25 hp tractor ,4wd, can do anything I need to do. Even digging out a small pond can be done ,just takes longer to do. And hopefully I got time to do it. Renting is something I don't believe in as the projects I got to do, at least 10 hrs a month, rental would cost me more and it's all dirt related. My mowing is done by a zero turn, less than 2 hrs a week during mowing season. And I got my wife trained on that. We're both in our upper 60's. But I like operating equipment as I was raised farming 1200 acres of irrigated land and raising calves.

Quick comment on tractor vs skid steer issues... A tractor, even with a cab, but especially an open station tractor, is much easier to get on and off (into, out of) while doing chores vs a skid steer. If the skid steer has a fully enclosed cab with an outward swinging door, like the Deere skid steers, you can actually get stuck inside if you cannot fully lower the booms to open door. The current Kubota skid steer door slides up over the operator inside the cab (clamshell style). The one skid steer I know of that doesn't have this door access problem is the JCB brand. Their cabs are accessed from the side, not unlike the cab on a tractor.

Decisions, decisions. Well if I were in the market for another piece of equipment a skid loader would be nice but they’re so darn expensive. Then factoring in maintenance and repairs you better be working that thing every day or close to it. The Ranger would be fun to mess around with but how much land maintenance could you actually do with it besides plowing snow, pulling trailers (within reason) or a few other things. No I think the tractor is probably the most useful and economical piece of equipment to have on a property or project. Granted you will need to purchase or rent implements for whatever you’re doing but still cheaper in the long run in my opinion.

Haven't gone through all the comments but it would seem a tractor comes out on top which I would agree. An atv would be fine if you have a woodlot and just need to maintain some trails but even then I think there'd be times you wish you had a tractor to. A skidsteer is a great machine but best suited in the commercial trade not for the home/landowner. The only way I'd consider starting out with a skidsteer is if I bought a large property that was heavily overgrown with brush and saplings and needed to put in a driveway and maybe put up some fences. Once completed I'd then trade it in for a tractor figuring a lot if the attachments I had for the skidsteer like the bucket, grapple bucket, pallet forks etc. Could be used with the tractor. Depending on how much land one has I think a tractor and atv go well together especially if you have family considering a tractor is only designed to seat one person not passengers.

Good rundown on the pros and cons for sure. I think the bulk of most users are probably in the category of the subcompact tractor or the utility vehicle. I'm actually doing back to a utility vehicle to do snow removal from a skid steer. Main reason being quicker to do the job. But the skid steer is going to stick around because when we need to do the heavy moving it's still there. But then I have a neighbor who has one of those bobcat tool cats and that things in a category of its own can do about anything and everything that light duty skid steers. Still have the usability of a utility vehicle and simplicity. But the price on it. There is some sticker shock.

If you can't afford a $70,000 Skid-steer but need to do a lot of forestry mulching what do you think about buying a mulcher and renting a Skid-steer [with the proper hydrolic flow of course]?👍

Much better off just renting out the entire job. My mulcher on my 333g is 35k. Plus, not a big market to sell when done, so you could sit on it awhile or lose a lot.
