Well I'm on my second video and I just noticed these are 5 years old. It's so beautiful seeing the two of you go through life living your dreams. I have been to French Polynesia Tahiti and Bora Bora it's absolutely beautiful no other place like it. Steve Naples

Worth noting if you are buying an older Island Packet is that the chainplates prior to 1996 are garbage and fail. Replace them. Immediately. Great video!

Thank you so much for the comment. I totally agree, you definitely have to change your chain plates if you haven’t if you have an Island Packet prior to 1996. I have heard and seen many disastrous stories about those. That is one of the only flaws that I have heard about for these yachts though.

Just purchased a 2004 IP 37 from a one owner. There were 2 other brands I really wanted but they were on the east coast of the U.S. and I am on the west coast and it is very costly to get them here and no desire to go party in the Caribbean. The only thing major I am getting do is a bow thruster installed as I am a solo sailor. No pot smoking drunk drugys allow or want to pirates. Enjoy the solitude. Very good points you showed.

Maybe you have done the trip by now. In 1995 we bought out IP32 in Seattle and "sailed" to Sitka and then on to Seward. We motored most of the way since we didn't want to constantly tack. Even across the gulf, it was smooth as glass for the 80-hour crossing. But, there are worse things to complain about.

There were multiple Island Packets shown in this video. Some were as small as 37' and others were as big as 52'. Ours is a 1996 37' Island Packet. We sold her to a great guy that now has her back down in Mexico and when the pandemic dies down, he is going to sail it across the Pacific as we did. That little boat goes and goes!

nice sailboat how thick is the hull?
@TheAdventureTravelers
@TheAdventureTravelers 4 года назад
Depends upon where you are measuring from. I believe there were 13 layers of tri-axial (glass running in three different directions) fiberglass. I would estimate the bottom area is about 1.5 feet thick. Sailing in 20' confused seas with absolutely no worries.

Why do sailboats' wheels always block the passage from the rear of the cockpit to the side/front? I'll never understand that design.
@TheAdventureTravelers
@TheAdventureTravelers 3 года назад
I totally agree. That is one of the design flaws that I hate. It's a total pain to have to climb out and around the helm all the time. When in port, we can take off the wheel and store it, but even that's a pain.
@stormtrooper9404
@stormtrooper9404 3 года назад
What (both of)you are seeing as a "bad design" is actualy a very clever safety feature! Small, tight, easily drained cockpit is what distinguish blue-water boats of marina queens 😉 Ah... and the big wheel also acts as a safety line, and prevents the captain to be thrown like ragdoll in case big wave poops over! If you don't like the sailors boats i.e. IPs, PSWs, Perry's, Crealock's etc etc, just pass over them and don't do stupid comments! There are more (ahem euro) brands that will catter your needs.
@Slithey7433
@Slithey7433 2 года назад
My not so “stupid” comment, as snarkily described by Mr. Stormtrooper, is that with a larger diameter wheel, you have more leverage to steer with less effort. A large wheel will allow the helmsman to move further outboard to inspect the water or under the sails. You should be able to reach the steering wheel from either side of the cockpit. Typically you sit on the high side of the boat when tacking. The name of the game is leverage, and it takes a lot of strength to turn such a big mass around once momentum has built up in a different direction. The huge steering wheel proves its worth in this situation.
@corvavw6447
@corvavw6447 5 месяцев назад

Island Packet Yachts is making the Seaward 26RK and 32RK. They sold the mold for the Seaward 46RK and do not make that model. Island Packet is incorporating their IP style and feel to the new Seaward models. Great looking retractable keel boats (Seawards).

I have a few issues with your video, and with Island Packets. Glassed in stainless chainplates are very poor practice. Stainless does not do well when deprived of oxygen and this is how many masts are lost. The full keel and keel hung rudder are a hydrodynamic abomination from the 19th century and have no place on an ocean going boat. IP's are heavy, wide boats with poorly performing rigs and terrible keels and rudders. It's a recipe for abysmal sailing performance. Unfortunately that has safety implications. If you have to sail to safety in light air to windward then an IP isn't going to do well. I also have issues with items like the galley strap: the stove is the most dangerous item on any sailing boat and strapping yourself to a rocking stove holding a big pan of boiling water is downright stupid. Also how did you do 10,000 miles from Mexico to Tahiti? It was only about 4000 miles when I did it last.
@TheAdventureTravelers
@TheAdventureTravelers 11 месяцев назад
Well, I’m not going to argue with you, because it sounds like you already have your mind made up and there’s no way I can possibly change your mind. However, the sailing performance on an island packet is good once you have your rum line set. Sure, it is not as fast as a lot of other boats but when you take into consideration that it is a full keel yacht with a protected rudder, it offsets the couple of knots not gained. I will agree with you on the stove. I actually had water off of the stove dump all over me, which wasn’t pleasant. Thank God it wasn’t scalding. As for the 10,000 nautical miles, add up sailing down the coast from San Diego up and down Mexico across the sea of Cortez down to Puerto Vallarta, over to French Polynesia, then up to Hawaii and then over to San Diego. What boats do you recommend then and what has a better safety record than Island Packet?
@deerfootnz
@deerfootnz 11 месяцев назад
@@TheAdventureTravelers IP's are horribly compromised by their draught which is specifically for the US east coast and Bahamas. Many designers have good blue water cruising boats. Look at the designs by Schumacher and Dashew, Joe Adams, Graham Radford. So boats like a Sundeer 56, Kaufman 47, Hylas 46, Adams 45 & 54, Oyster lightwave 48. I have a Sundeer 60. Despite the length it is not a big boat. The rig is the same size as my previous 43 footer. We commonly do 200 miles a day with little drama or effort. It has two watertight bulkheads and only three through hulls, none of which are between the bulkheads. It has external exposed chainplates. It is built in excess of ABS and at 3x ABS in the relevant places. It is definitively safer than an IP.

So what you really meant to say here was there is nothing really unique about anything on this boat, except that it's built for rich people. My catalina 30 had everything but your anchor things. But it had a pin holding it down, so, nothing safer here...
@TheAdventureTravelers
@TheAdventureTravelers 6 лет назад
Josef, well, we are really glad you like your Catalina 30 (a lot of people do). Your boat is a good boat, however, after years of research, we purchased our Island Packet because we know for a fact that our lives depended on our boat on our long passages. Yes, a Catalina 30 can make the same passage, however, when we were in 20 foot swells and gusts to 50+ knots, we felt VERY secure in our 20 year old Island Packet... and no, we are far from rich.
@Josef_R
@Josef_R 6 лет назад
I didn't say the Catalina was safer, just that it has most of the stuff you mentioned. Catalina is not a bluewater boat. The 10 items you listed are not what make the IP safer. I couldn't find yours used under half a million dollars, so yeah, that's rich.
@SOLDOZER
@SOLDOZER 4 года назад
@@Josef_R Your Catalina has cables/pullies for steering, which broke on a Catalina I was on in one of my ASA courses. We had to break out the emergency tiller. Id never buy a Catalina for anything but bay cruising.
