dude that kid was like 15. the students were only told to apply suncream once that day at like 10am despite spending 7 hours in the sun. 4 kids were hospitalised when they got back to the uk. that kid who was the feature of the article literally spent 6 weeks in hospital bc the burns were so bad, and not one teacher recognised that the burns needed medical treatment or even spoke to the parents about it.

The one about the Sunburn Students is the students' fault not the school's since he and the other students are old enough to know about the dangers of the sun and what suncream to put on. The parents should have punish their kids for being dumb as even I would put on suncream to protect my body.

I have a bad feeling about our school trip (that's in next month) to Estonia. Half of the class hates each other for no fucking reason (I'm Being hated because of my "weird clothing choices" & "because I 'ruined' someone's life") & other shit. Teacher's know about our class's toxic relationship with each other, but we're still going to Estonia. God help us all!

I remember going to Nepal in 1999 for a school trip. While we were out hiking, someone at home started a rumor that we were kidnapped by the local rebals. As soon as I heard that back in Kathmandu, I had to e-mail my mom and tell her no, we were not kidnapped and I was safe.

The only field trips gone wrong I've been on were field trips where one of my classmates threw a tantrum and forced us all to leave before we had a chance to experience anything exciting as punishment (glad that only happened once when we went bowling. He wanted to go to Subway for lunch and when the teacher said no he freaked out and started screaming)

Hey I went on natures classroom as part of our learning carriculim in MA and we had the exact samething happen. Literally no one said anything other than how awesome it was, were chased through the woods shoved (figuratively) into a root cellar while an argument went on directly above us with a simulated murder of a slave owner. There were like 100 of us and it was still awesome.

Reenacting historical moments is a common teaching tool. Probably not best when applied to certain situations, though....

SedativeChicken I'm a legitimate Trail of Tears descendant let's watch people do a reenactment of that one. You know, so you can see your wives, husbands, and children die on the way there, it's called the Trail of Tears for a reason. Obviously, that would be stupid, and whilst I do not have problems with reenactments of it, I certainly don't think that should be a field trip, and I think it should be entirely voluntary.

It was fucking horrifying. I did it 20 years ago and I still have anxiety when I think about it. The group I was in got lost in the woods without an instructor for hours. The entire experience at Nature's Classroom was bizarre and uncomfortable.

Poland January 2003 - High School students went for a trip to Polish Tatra Mountains. They wanted to climb the highest mountain in Poland - Rysy. While they were hiking the avalanche came down from the mountain taking 13 people with it, 8 died.

I’ve been to the Nature’s Classroom trip back in 6th grade in 2003 and it was mostly lots of fun outdoor activities, learning, campfire stories, hiking, playing and other camp fun. They only did the Underground Railroad thing 1 night and we all learned about months before the trip was set to take place. Us and 2 other schools went there and it’s was the most fun trip I had and we were there for a week. If you didn’t want to participate you just got your parent to sign a form saying that it was not okay and you could still enjoy all the perks of the trip. Also they didn’t use any harsh language.

I will tell you an awesome field trip story. Now this was a long time ago back in the 90s when I was a teenager. It was a debate team field trip and we happened to be staying in the same hotel as the WCW wrestlers, and they were friendly and nice gave autographs. Fortunately we never had any bad field trips, except maybe the time I was handed a human leg at a cadaver dissection but that was more humorous than bad.

We went to a local zoo in British Columbia. The zookeepers had explicitly said, do not go near the lion's due to mating time or something like that. This kid begged his mom to go see the lion's, so she caved and took him over to them. The male saw them and was pacing them, watching them. They stopped to watch the lion, and he turned his ass around and sprayed the hell out of the mom and kid. I remember all of us kids jamming ourselves as far back on the bus as possible away from the smell. That's was the highlight of elementary school for me. Besides when we had an earthquake in 2001 and half our school thought it was the apocalypse.

So I lived in BFE. So in second grade, the field trip was to tour the meat packing plant. So we are all going through and some of the kids are about ready to throw up. They put all the students in the meat locker where all the cows minus skin and internal organs are hanging up. Once all the students are in they shut the door and turned out the lights. This was WAY before cell phones so no one had a light with them. They only left us like that for 15 seconds but the first thing I saw after the light turned on was a tongue attached to a cow torso. But one of my classmates had it worse. He discovered his last name on a cow. He had a cow he was raising at home and he had not seen it for a couple of days. Turns out his parents had taken the cow in to be butchered and just didn't tell him. What a way to find out. It also was a great indicator of who was stupid. I just stopped walking so I didn't run into a cow corpse. But a lot of my classmates panicked and just started trying to run. But all the parents chaperoning thought it was hilarious. And since this was BFE, a lot of the kids' families had large herds of cattle.

My bus in a 5th grade field trip almost drove off a cliff and we were brought off and played Simon says and we weren't allowed 2 see the bus so we couldn't tell our parents..... I looked back and so did 5 other kids

This happened on my 3rd Grade field trip to Washington DC back in 2009. My group was in one of the parts in the Capital, then we had to be escorted out of the building for some reason. We went onto our assigned charter bus and had to go to pick up the rest of the 3rd Grade class. I found out years later there was a lock-down going on and didn't find out what caused it to happen...

In high school we toured a newspaper facility and someone. We were split into several groups. Some idiots in my group acted like toddlers who’d run out of Goldfish crackers and apple juice. We were ALL lectured while the other groups went to have lunch. Parents were pissed and we each received a $20 voucher good toward food at our yummy (🤮) school cafeteria.

I went to Camp Potawatomi in 5th grade and they did a reenactment of The Underground Railroad and at one point they had a soldier with a fake rifle make our group get down face first on the ground and I remember him jabbing me in the back with the rifle to the point of pain. I remember going through the dark woods and breaking into tears because the experience frightened me. Definitely not going to let my children visit this camp.

Seventh Grade? Hell I remember doing that in fifth. On top of that you COULD opt out and the staff warned us everyday leading up to it. I don’t recall slander being used but I do remember my science teacher being tied to a tree.

My schools first trip with my year was absolute chaos this is what happened: it was Monday we went to a park it was beautiful there were waterfalls and amazing views.there was an abandoned building in the park me and one of my friends went to the building and then my friend went pale and told me to look at the floor suddenly a loud screaming sound came out of nowhere my friend told me to look up and the screaming had faded away we went back to the group someone was crying and showed us a deer corpse that it’s head had been ripped off they evacuated the visitors we got told there was a mentally ill man who had been killing animals but my friend told me it wasn’t a man it was a monster. A couple of days later the school confirmed that what we were nearly killed by was not a human but and that they had been chased before by a plague doctor who apparently said he was going to cure them

So in Secondary school/Highschool I was taking my second year(well sort of third) with a focus on vocational ICT. So, a few of us were 18 to 19 but most of us were 17 to 18. Anyway, as this is ICT as a class trip we took a trip to germany to visit the world largest computer trade fair Cebit. So that includes an overnight ferry trip, you know, casino, bars, etc. And a week stay in a country, that makes other countries, that makes fun of USA leagal drinking age, look like prudish countries. Basically in germany you can buy wine and beer at 16 and hard liquour at 18( my country it is 18 and 20) So we had two teachers and a guy from the IT department(handsome fella that hooked up with the only girl in the class). And we were told by the teachers, NO drinking! Of course the moment we stepped on the ferry they went to the bar, we were cut loose and its a miracle the school trip didnt make it to the local press.

The Underground Railroad situation happened to me in the fourth grade. Though, instead of cotton, we were made to forage berries. We were also made to hide in barns to avoid capture, belittled by staff as if we were slaves, on one occasion someone had to kiss the instructor's boots as a punishment. Shit was wild. Same field trip, we reenacted Oregon Trail.

The parent of the 15 year old with sunburn should have been upset with her disobedient son, NOT the school...I'm 100% positive that had any teacher, male or female, had tried to actually put the sunscreen on her son there would have been charges brought against said person ranging from inappropriate touching to sexual harassment. When students don't listen they can't be forced to do homework just as they can't be forced to do something as simple as apply sunscreen, both of which are instructions that are given to HELP them. And, the mother herself was also to blame...did she not know where her son was going? Why did she not tell him to apply sunscreen? I'm sure it was on the field trip form. Shame on her. Shame...shame...shame!

Last year I’ve learned that it’s common for students to do bonkers things during school field trips like drinking, drugs, and??? Orgies?? Usually drinking, on field trips to countries where drinking is legal for teens. I won’t doubt that the more extreme stuff has happened but not that often??
