I think the whole lack of real animosity between teams has a lot to do with free agency. Guys naturally (and, I think, smartly) don’t want to make blood feuds with teams when they know they aren’t gonna be on their own team forever. Why would they risk closing off potential avenues when the team they’re playing might be willing to sign them down the line? Whether you think that’s right or not is a different issue, but I think it’s no mystery why teams aren’t as bloodthirsty anymore.
I would counter and say that player movement has actually increased animosity. I think of just what the Panthers have in the last year and the next. Their opening game features their disgruntled quarterback going against their old team.
While there is some merit to this thought its also slightly bone-headed because you're implying that an organization/player would *willingly* not sign to a specific entity because of them being on another team and being competitive. A great example is Dennis Rodman signing with Chicago after playing in Detroit. If you know anything about the Bad boys vs Jordan bulls feud, its that they *hated* each other. Team and players all, and that was *mutual* hatred between the teams and players. HOWEVER Chicago *still* chose to seek Rodman when he was a free agent, and Rodman signed with them despite the fact that Rodman n' co. Were trying to take Jordan's head off each time they played each other. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" fits fairly well in this situation (though obviously its not a perfect fit)
I miss full backs ,real ones. And I miss the times when players cared if they lost . Nowadays after a loss it’s like they are all buddies laughing and joking around .
The reason that is, is because they kickoff from the 35 instead of the 30. Closer to the opposite end zone so more touchbacks. Done to cut back on head injuries. More high speed collisions on kickoff returns than the rest of the game.
Well it seems like the new rule changes are trying to bring kickoffs back into the game Yes it will be different, but there’s an incentive now not to just boot it out the end zone We may see kickoff returns reemerge in importance
Miss John Madden commentary. That is the only thing I miss. Football is better today than ever. Oh wait, I also miss when NFL films did legit Top 10 Lists.
That one thing about angry opponents is interesting. My take has always been respect the opponent, but go in there wanting to beat the crap out of them.
I also miss fare onside kicks. And the big hits. To me that is why players got paid so much to take the hits. Know quarterback can play for 20 years and break all kinds of records.
I miss when quarterbacks were players also and could be tackled. Also miss kickoffs. Loved the era when players stayed with one team their whole career. To me the 70s were a great era
@@MrSnidleywhiplash This is how i can tell the age of Fans. Most of the younger fans have no idea of just how much action their was on the field compared to today back in the 70's and 80's. Like you i miss physical football.
@@davidmiller9485they were also juiced up on drugs and actively cheating with shit such as stickum. But sure, I guess it’s normal to appreciate a time when the players were as sober as the rowdy fans.
Nfl officials not being turds, the famous raider game, deion, the 49ers Cowboys rivalry, raiders Dolphins rivalry, the toughness of the game, madden and sumerall and playing on both sides
I miss the alternate helmets. I think they should replace that with football in LA, because the NFL brought it back with the Rams returning and the Chargers returning there too.
We have Megatron, Beast mode, Legion of boom, Cool Brees, the sheriff, Ironman, Eazy-E, Weapon-X, No fly zone, the bearded pony, and Matty ice who remembers those nicknames
23:40 I think the problem now is that the ace package has replaced the pro set. Most teams will line up with 3 wide receivers. It became more efficient to have an additional wide receiver than a full back. At the same time. High school coaches are running spread formations and run and shoot formations. This means there aren’t as many fullbacks who play in college which means there are even less that play in the nfl. I’m stealing this from KTO, but I think fullbacks may return one day. As linebackers get lighter in order effectively cover speedy pass catchers, some coaches may find that it is easier and more efficient to run up the middle with a powerful fullback, or have that fullback block. Personally I think the raiders should use their fullback often this year. Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, and Darren Waller all usually deserve double coverage, so an additional wide receiver may not be as useful as a back who can block when the right side of the line breaks down.
Another I missed about football is super bowl field….from super bowl 31-37 they have the two teams helmet on each 35 yard line. Now from super bowl 39 and present they add the nfl logo on the 50 yard line with the Super Bowls logo on the 35 yard line
I think individuality and interesting personalities is missing in all sports. When the big money came in that pushed all the interesting personalities out. Everyone is so robotic and worried about image and marketing now we won’t see anything like the 70s and 80s.
I miss when they let them boys play football. These athletes are bigger, stronger and faster than ever. They must be protected. That being said, the equipment is higher quality and the new rules have made it entirely too tough on defenses.
I wish I could have shown this to two classmates back in high school who argued that NFL was better than CFL just because of the location of the goal posts (CFL still has them at the front of the end zone) just to show why the NFL moved them
To me unlimited defense was the thing that I always will miss about NFL football. The unlimited defense until the Mel Blount rule being inserted in 1978.
36:10 the NBA did the same thing too. The coaches have to wear athletic gear because they are sweating the whole game because of how intense all of them are.
Amen to that. I have worn a suit for 17 years in a row despite not being required to. You get treated different, it’s all about business. I’m a very “don’t tell people what to do” type person, but if that’s me on an NFL sideline, coaching my favorite team (Rams), you better believe there’d be a gold tie on me.
@Hate Myself I’m not talking about just points, I’m talking about the fact they can’t hit anymore. Seeing them go full throttle and hit each other is exciting, now they get penalized so easily.
Mccaffrey def counts...but gone are the days of czonka, riggins, von eeghen, rathman, jim taylor....shit until peyton hillis random year wasnt no white rbs doin shit since merill hoge...maybe we see another one emerge...but also...white cornerbacks? Where have the guys like Dick labeau, paul krause n even Jason sehorn...?
SHOWBOATING look at the 91 Falcons could they even exist today? Deion Sanders would be the most flagged player in history for "unsportsmanlike behavior'
@@EmmaBonn96 No disrespect to you, but Aaron Donald is 4-3 defensive tackle & a 3-4 defensive end all at once if given the appropriate circumstances such as coaching him to be the best football player he can be.
I miss a lot of things. I miss real men playing football. I miss football being played in stadiums and not these multibillion dollar monstrosities like So-Fi. I miss watching games from Veterans Stadium in Philly and Soldier Field in Chicago and the Orange Bowl in Miami and Busch Stadium in St. Louis and not from the Corporate name of the week stadium. And I miss the days, and this goes for sports in general, when players were actually blue collar guys like their fans. Now they're pampered millionaires who sit out games for a hangnail.
