I *love* the concept of Paradise Towers, and the world-building, exposition kang lingo etc is actually quite interesting. As a dark comedy mixed with camp farce it works quite well. Richard Briers though. I don't dislike the guy as an actor, but the way he effectively takes the piss of the whole production- particularly with his "possessed" performance- leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As far as performances go it's a total shocker, verging on the unprofessional.

"You're nothing. Nothing but a bunch of tin soldiers skulking about the galaxy in an ancient spaceship." That line alone from Tom Baker makes "Revenge of the Cybermen" fine in my book. Also the line where he yells "Harry Sullivan is an imbecile!!!" is another great line. You said you were leaving out ones that didn't have any entertainment value. I guess my idea of entertainment is vastly different than yours. I wouldn't put any Tom Baker stories in a top 10 worst stories list, EVER. The story can be sort of shit but he usually injects something that makes it entertaining. I agree with your other selections for the most part.

"You have no home planet, no influence, nothing! Your just a pathetic bunch of tin soldiers skulking about the galaxy in an ancient spaceship." "Loose thinking. The trouble with Cybermen is that they have hydraulic muscles...and hydraulic brains to go with them." Although this was the start of Cybermen with emotion lol, with the hip holding Cyber-Leader: "There will be no gold!"

I think not putting ANY Tom Baker episodes into your list is a little strange. Especially since he had the longest run on Doctor Who and is bound to have some off days. That being said I don't mind "Revenge of the Cybermen" as a whole. It has many issues, but I enjoy the underground portion. However I don't think "Underworld" should be excluded from a list that was practically made for it.
@Popcultureguy3000

@@jedisalsohere The Leisure Hive might have been the absolute *DULLEST* I’ve ever seen Tom Baker in his tenure in the role, but the episodes went above and beyond in setting up an interesting alien culture to explore, so it did have a lot of great moments not revolving around the Doctor or Romana.

The “demented kids show” aesthetic really freaking worked for The Happiness Patrol, Paradise Towers and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy! Gotta disagree with you on The Time Monster. I watched it recently with my friends and it was absolutely, without question, the most fun any of us have ever had watching Doctor Who. The sheer amount of fun everyone's clearly having with the script is evident from minute one and the whole experience is just so insane that you end up laughing along with it. Admittedly, its also more fun when you count the amount of accidental innuendos the story has: "Tomtit" "I'm sorry about your coxit, Jo" "Ruth wants to go and nobble the master" Seriously, its endless

a lot of people mention 'The Underwater Menace' as notoriously crap. personally, i really enjoy it in an acid-trip kind of way. I like to think of it as 'troughton does a 50's B-movie'. something about it just works for me. It takes place deep under the sea, is thusly very claustrophobic, features a mad scientist with a totally insane plan, contains both of the earliest existing troughton episodes, has bonkers religious fanatics (and a subsequent message about spiritual gullibility and how it can mislead people), and fish-people doing underwater ballet. I'm probably in a minority here but if the rest of it got found I would be ecstatic. One man's trash is another's treasure I suppose. But the thing is, I can at least find something to enjoy in this story (particularly troughton and co. as always). The stories I truly dislike the most are the 'bad and boring' stories (a lot of the Davison Era). all of the 'so bad it's funny' stories are lots of fun for me (like the Dominators and Timelash) Also I really respect this list man. even though i can enjoy some stories you put on it, they are all definitely there with good reason.

The worst thing about "Revenge of the Cybermen" was not because it introduced their weakness to gold; which was decently handled in this episode, before later writers simplified it by making gold tip arrows and gold coins lethal to them. But because for the entire 70s decade, this was the only Cyberman story they nade.

Haha I kind of love the campy mess that is The Time Monster - it really just tickles a funhouse part of my brain where bad becomes good. Delgado and Pertwee always have great chemistry, the daisy scene in the jail cell with Jo is actually very poignant and it does at least liven up its six-part structure by splitting into different parts. I guess it helps that I have a soft spot for the Pertwee era in general. Except The Mutants - now that story...woof.

Interesting list. Delta and the Bannerman is one of those stories where I can laugh at it for it's "so bad it's good" syndrome. But not everyone is pleased, so that's fine by me. Would you do a top and bottom 10 Big Finish or BBC Novels series? I think a few of us would find those interesting. Another interesting video, or just topic in general, could be the adaptation of TV serials to Target or novelisation form, as some definitely are ambiguous compared to the original thing.

I love Revenge Of The Cybermen. Oh, it’s full of faults and I can see why it’s on your list, but it has some nostalgic associations for me. The Time Monster is an odd one for me. It has some really nice moments, but also some rot. Benton naked at the end! And I can’t help but feel that everyone is really working hard to keep a straight face every time they say Tom Tit. People tend to look at Tom Baker’s era with fondness, and with good reason. But, for me, the moment Hinchcliffe and Holmes departed and Graham Williams took over things took a downward turn. Leela’s character suddenly wasn’t treated as well as she deserved and was in danger of becoming another generic companion, there were a lot of really forgettable stories like Underworld, and some really embarrassing ones like Creature From The Pit with its vaguely phallic Erato (I sometimes call that story The Horror Of Wang Rock for this reason). I don’t think Graham Williams did a great job. I also think that Douglas Adams was a poor choice as script editor as his off-the-wall humour started to creep in to places where it wasn’t suited. He also started to indulge some of Toms more zanier whims and it wasn’t always what was best for the show. And as much as I like K9 in small doses, he was gimmicky. Tom had been there too long and the show was getting stale. There’s not much that I like from 1977 through to 1979. I liked your explanation of what was wrong with Delta And The Bannermen. I’d never thought of that before, but it makes sense when you say it. Time And The Rani was badly done. There’s a general consensus for people involved in it at the time that Sylvester wasn’t given enough direction and was left to his own devices as to how he wanted to play it - rather like throwing a man into a lake when you know full well he can’t swim, without the benefit of a rubber ring. Which is why I dont think his first series is very good. I do t think it’s Sylvester’s fault. Towards the end of his first season he started to gain confidence enough to say “right, this is how I want to do it” and we we subsequently got a darker Doctor in his next 2 seasons and I think he was a great Doctor. It doesn’t help that some of his early stories were written by people who did t necessarily know that Colin had been fired, or at least not knowing who his replacement would be, and were writing with the 6th Doctor in mind. Time lash isn’t really great, although it’s always a pleasure to see Paul Darrow. Warriors Of The Deep was the only Peter Davidson story that I can’t watch. I saw it as a kid on first broadcast and I watched it when I got the VHS in the 90s. I watched it once and vowed never to watch it again. I own the DVD and have watched the special features but have never watched the actual episodes on it. I’m really surprised that Creature From The Pit and The Web Planet didn’t make the list.

In order: I semi agree with your list, I personally hold Time and the Rani and Delta and the Bannermen in reasonable regard as a "So bad its good" set of episodes...in fact to me the whole of season 24 reflects this sort of "Sickly upbeat dark humor" for one season only its a forced grimace with malicious eyes so to speak before it found its feet and started down the darker directions of seasons 25 and 26...in fact to me my top 10 worst stories would probably be (In no particular order): Warriors of the deep, time flight, Mark of the Rani, Underworld, Nightmare of Eden, The Mutants, The space museum, Colony in space, The trial of a timelord (Story 1) And The Invisible Enemy Also im not ambivalent about your list, its a jolly fine list sir! It stirred emotions of nausia and nostalgia Nausia and Nostalgia Im a bit angry *Starts hitting people* I look forward to your new who list :)

In my opinion, the whole 80s era of the classic series was, as they say, “utter rubbish.” It all fell to pieces which led to its downfall. They said it failed to connect to an audience, meaning absolutely NOBODY was watching it, because it was already dead. One reason why is it was running for too long. This is exactly what 20 years does to a show, it falls apart. And it hasn’t been the same since Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor) and Robert Holmes (the show’s most influential writer) left the show. But don’t get me wrong, the three doctors who starred during that time, (Peter Davison, Colin Baker & Sylvester McCoy), were brilliant. They were perfect for the role of The Doctor, it was just the episodes that were terrible, those doctors seriously deserved better. And I also absolutely love the theme music of the 80s era! It’s my favorite rendition of the Doctor Who theme, I wish they play it in every intro. But although the theme is cool, I can’t say the same for the episodes. And also, if you’ll pardon me, the companions were pretty lousy as well. Useless, unlikeable and lousy actors. I blame one person, John Nathan-Turner, the head producer of the show during that time. He ruined it all. And confidentially, this show wasn’t the only one, all British sci-fi was awful during the 80s. American sci-fi was way better, (Star Trek and Star Wars).

Great video Stu, really interesting picks. For me, I think my worst classic is Time-Flight, it is just so bloody dull and nothing seems to make sense, like why the hell does the certain returning villain in disguise talk in the (terrible) accent when they are alone? I wouldn't put Revenge of the Cybermen in my Top 10 Worst, for me I think Silver Nemesis is the worst classic Cyber story as it is one of those stories that just tricks you, you go to watch it thinking "You know what, I don't think this will be as bad as I remember, I may enjoy this one" but then it is worse than you remember, and it seems to get worse on every viewing (although I LOVE the chase scene with Ace and the Cybermen). Ever thought about doing an overrated stories video? Personally I think stories like Inferno and The Sea Devils are overrated, they just don't really seem to go anywhere. However, I absolutely loved The Sea Devils when I saw it for the first time when I was 9 or 10, and I love the Sea Devils as a monster so it is a story I hold close to my heart, even though as I've gotten older I've realised it isn't that great.

Very entertaining list - a lot of my own least favourite episodes are included. Just wanted to add, though, that my first encounter with Warriors of the Deep was as an audio book, and therefore , for a long time, my sense of it was completely based on the, as you pointed out, bleak, claustrophobic and dark atmosphere the story has. When I finally did get to see the TV serial, I was appalled at the completed mess they had made of it, but I still retain a fondness gleaned from a couple of hours listening to Peter Davison reading it with his usual calm detachment over a very long car journey a few years back. I suppose this illustrates why for so many people Big Finish has become the favourite way of consuming Who. Keep up the good work.

The Power of Kroll: I don't hate it, but I don't really care either so anyone can basically say anything about it and I won't lift a finger in its defense. Revenge of the Cybermen: I don't think it's a good story, but I really like the design of the Cybermen in this one and the alien race looks better than usual. Also, you talked about how this episode ran out of money, but it actually had a budget boost when there was extra money left over, so yeah. They managed to make a bad episode with extra money while episodes like Midnight managed to be brilliant with no money. Time Monster: Haven't seen it. Underworld: Haven't seen it. Delta and the Bannermen: Haven't seen it. Time-Flight: Once again, I don't hate it, but you can basically say whatever you like about it and I won't care. Time and the Rani: Haven't seen it. The Space Pirates: Got about 15 minutes into episode 1 and couldn't take any more. Also, I'm not sure you entirely understand why we have so many episodes from 1969. There wasn't really any difference between 1963 and 1969 when it came to junkings as all of them were junked in the 70s, it was just luck that we have most of the season 6 episodes, not because the show was more popular. Timelash: Haven't seen it. Warriors of the Deep: I don't think it's that bad. It's not great, but I think it could have been good if it had had a little more production time.

Power of Kroll, Time Monster, Underworld, Timeflight, Space Pirates, Timelash, Warriors on the Cheap - can't disagree with any of those. Time and the Rani too, although it would probably miss out on a bottom 10 because of it's one redeeming quality - it looks bloody good and the direction is strong. They managed to put a lot on screen with few resources and it features the show's first CGI graphics sequence (which believe it or not was at the time mouth-open stuff!). Just a shame almost nothing else about the story has any merit. I admit I do enjoy Revenge of the Cybermen even though I'm under no illusions as to it's "quality". Robert Holmes said he disliked the Cybermen as a concept and this story doesn't disguise that. I don't get bored by it, and being boring is for me the *worst* sin a Doctor Who story can commit. I'll take tacky, I'll take funny, I'll take nonsensical, I'll take cheap'n'cheesy. But never boring. And I'm definitely fond of Delta and the Bannermen. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as portrayed here. Sure, it had an overly upbeat style, panders to insatiable Baby-Boomer 1950s fanservice, and has a sideplot about intelligent bees (NuWho would NEVER feature something as silly as that would it!?!). But it's enthusiastically made with a solid sci-fi core and a breakneck plot pace. It's attempted total genocide made crazy fun! I'd never rate it as great, but definitely not a worst. As for my worsts, it reflects my demand that Dr Who must not be boring. "The Dominators" bores me rigid and usually goes on my least favourites list. They even called the good guys the "DULcians... for god's sake!" Even worse than that for me is the Web Planet. Unrelentingly tedious, unwatchable tripe and I don't care if I never see it again. "Zarrrrrrbiiiiiii!" Ughhh. I also deeply dislike The Mutants. OK the story has some interesting ideas and the anti-colonial social commentary is as sharp now as it was then. Just a pity it's got a plot about as exciting as a bag of cement mix. It has a support cast who don't seem to give a crap about the production and a soundtrack that makes you want to stick knitting needles in your ears just to make it stop!

Did Johnny Bryne really think the BBC had the budget to make a Myrker? Did he really think they could pull it off? Also, Warriors of the Deep has an odd problem for Dr Who. In the 80s a lot of stories where written around continuity to their detriment (like Attack of the Cybermen) but in Warriors the show is making up fake continuity to make the story work. Eg the Dr never met a Myrker, the Silurians didn't have names or a triad. And as for the Siluarians being peace loving and offering with humanity. Well, the Old Silurian leader said he wanted to and the others killed him for thinking that way and in the Sea Devil the Cheif was toyed with the idea of peace for two minutes and then decided genocide was the right course of action. Also, Sea Devils never called themselves Sea Devils.

I do agree with your list for the most part, but my least favourite story from Classic Who has to be The Armageddon Factor. I've been bored by some bad episodes of Classic Who, but none have ever made me fall to sleep. Twice. And after accumulating the Key to Time at the end, the Doctor just discards them all over again. I felt that was an utter waste of everyone's time.
@defrostedrobot77

Armageddon was definitely worse than Kroll if only cause they didn't even seem to try to give a satisfying finish. Plus apparently the all powerful Key to Time can be briefly tricked by sticking something inside it.

defrostedrobot77 My overall opinion of Kroll was that I didn't really care much for it, except for the squid monster, largely because as a kid I grew up watching old Godzilla and Gamera movies. But I'd rather watch Kroll over Armageddon.

defrostedrobot77 Definitely helps. That's one of the flaws of having longer episodes that could go on for months on end. On one hand, longer episodes gives you a chance to flesh out the characters and story. But on the other hand, it's in more danger of dragging on.

Pretty much agree with you, although I have to say I completely adore Revenge of The Cybermen - it’s quite a heady mixture of (in places) brutalism, hilariously wobbly model work, brilliant location atmospherics and a script that veers from B-movie awful to zingy one-liners with The Doctor given some devastating put-downs. But most of all, it’s the chemistry between the regulars and the absolute commitment of all the players, who genuinely do manage to polish a turd into a minor gem - in my opinion, anyway. Entertaining A F!

I've always had a soft spot for Time Monster for the Doctor's "daisyest daisy" speech. Plus the TARDIS confrontation with the Master is pretty entertaining. I'm not that big a fan of the entirety of the pre-2005 era of the show, but that "Daisiest Daisy" speech is absolutely beautiful. Love it, and it fits perfectly well with how we've heard Gallifrey described later on. I can imagine it being played over the orange snowy fields under a burning sky footage of Gallifrey we got in Series 3.

Stuart, I really think The Time Monster from the Jon Pertwee era was entertaining, but was draggy at times, improbable plotwise, and had a hysterically funny ending: "Would somebody mind telling me what's going on here?" says Sgt. Benton as he returns to his adult form, in the nude! 😹😄

Aside from The Time Monster & the Kronovore featured in it, I also liked The Space Pirates from the Troughton period. I've seen the second episode and clips from the first as well. I don't understand how much hate The Time Monster got from classic fans. It's the Deamons if it went psychedelic instead of demonic... that's fair. But how can you hate a story that goes "The Master tries to take control of pantomine bird God Kronos, patron deity of the lost continent of Atlantis before it was the lost continent, in fact causing to become the lost continent when the bird ran amok in his attempts to become its master." I recognize the device the Doctor makes as an ENTROPY catcher; Catches disorder, reverses time reverses. Kind of like a dream catcher but one that only works for time lords, don't take it so seriously. Oh yeah, Entropy = Y x Time. It's always positive so time always goes forward but if you can find a way to counter it... that'd be time travel. But as a Time Lord, you'd know that already.

Finally, (and sorry for bombarding your comments, but I had several points and wanted to separate them), the classic series was only ever made to be watched once, in 25 minute chunks. I am old enough to have seen all the episodes from Jon Pertwee "at the right age" thanks to ABC repeats. I find your enjoyment of the episodes can change depending on whether you binge watch or break them up..

I'm back for my third watch of these videos. My first watch was in 2016 when I had watched 10 stories from classic who. My second watch was in 2018 when I had watched 40 stories from classic who. It's 2020 and now I have watched 110 stories from classic who. This is my opinion on your list. 10. Power of Kroll - I recently watched season 16 in a jumbled fashion in the last 6 months. I definitely have to say this was really boring. I barely remember anything from it too while I can remember every other story from the key to time. 9. Revenge of the Cybermen - Ahh, this one. The only story I had forgotten that I have watched before. the cybermen are usually always fun. Here, they were meh. I vaguely remember that the cave scene and the bomb scenes were really slow and boring. Voga (I had to search this up) seemed really pointless. 8. The Time Monster - I watched this during the Twitch run and I can't really explain my feelings for it. On one hand, I found the earth scenes were time starts to become bat shit crazy and starts to harass Unit really entertaining. On other hand, as soon as we enter Atlantis, the stories becomes literal garbage. I have never found any classic who story this frustrating. 7. Underworld - Haven't actually seen this one. Recently, I realized that I haven't actually watched anything from season 15 other than the Sunmakers. 6. Delta and the Bannermen - Another one which I haven't seen. If this is as half as bad as Time and the Rani, this will not be very enjoyable. 5. Timeflight - I recently watched this one. I didn't actually find it that bad. Sure, the Master reveal was really shoehorned in. What was he doing in that disguise for so long. The plot is really quite garbled especially in part 3 which I really hated. Parts 1, 2 and 4 were alright to quite good. Anything to do with the plane has some interest to it but the story itself is nothing to write home about. 4. Time and the Rani - I was fully expecting this one to make the list. I didn't like it. While, stories like Warriors of the Deep and the Twin Dilemma have some value to it. This doesn't. This ruined a perfectly good Timelord villain for the show, the regeneration was terrible and basically ruined the seventh doctor for first time viewers. If I hadn't watched Remembrance before this, I would think that the seventh doctor single handedly cancelled the show. 3. The Space Pirates - No clue about this one. It could be on the great side of season 6 along side the War Games, the Invasion and the Mind Robber or it's going to be on the eeh side of season 6 with the Krotons or the Dominators. Or it could be the worst second doctor story ever. 2. Timelash - Haven't seen this one either. I think season 22 is really underrated (I've seen all the other stories), other than Vengeance on Varos which I think is the worst one of the bunch. 1. Warriors of the Deep - Literally watched this last week. I think it's comically bad which makes it a guilty pleasure. The ideas used in this story are quite decent especially in how it mirrors the cold war. The Silurians and Sea Devils appearing together are fun. However, my biggest gripe with this story is the Myrka, who is completely pointless in this story who could have been replaced with more Silurians and Sea Devils. It's just an excuse for the doctor to use some pseudo science to create this blinding ray of light. Overall, I find it hilarious;y stupid but fun.

Really? No Twin Dilemma? I mean, it's got some good elements to it and I'm a huge fan of Six (oddly enough, even more on TV than on Big Finish) but... really? No? Ok, not important anyway. 10. See, the main reason I've not bothered looking into the Key to Time arc is because I've heard it's really patchy. I've heard some stories are really good and some are really bad. I could deal with that in Trial of a Time Lord, given how much shorter it was comparitively and even if it wasn't perfect (Terror of the Vulvas and some of episode 14 come to mind), I still think it was good on the whole. As an aside, would it be worth looking into the arc at some point? 9. I kinda wanted to check this one out, even though I know it's supposed to be bad. Maybe it's just because I really want to see the one Cybermen story between Invasion and Earthshock (seriously, that's about 14 years if you take out Revenge) 8. Again, another one on my list (I really do have poor taste as a Doctor Who fan, don't I? lol). Mainly because I remember seeing bits of this on UKTV Gold when I was a kid and really enjoyed the scenes between Pertwee and Delgado and that story he tells Jo about his "Blackest Day" 7. Don't hear people talk about this serial and from that footage, I can tell why. 6. "Did you pain the baby green? No! NO! WE DO NOT PAIN THE BABY GREEN!" 5. Didn't help this one too much coming after such a shocking ending to the previous serial 4. FINALLY! One I've actually seen! Ok, ahem... I actually quite like this one. Not as in "I think it's a really good, really underappreciated story". More of "It's not that horrible and has a bit of a 'so campy and stupid it's fun' kind of way". But still, out of the 7th Doctor serials I have seen, this is my least favourite. (Kate O'Mara's Mel impression is on point tho!) 3. I have similar feelings to the Abominable Snowmen. On TV, it's probably really good. But as a telespan reconstruction, it's not that interesting to watch. Though in this case, it doesn't sound too good either way. 2. To me, this is "The Room" of Doctor Who. It's so poorly made that at the same time, it has this charm to it. Though I wouldn't recommend it to many people even based on that basis. 1. See, I always refer to Twin Dilemma as "The one that killed Doctor Who", but this one seemed to have gotten the ball rolling. It's a shame because there is some good in Season 21 (Namely Androzani) but at the same shit, a lot of shit to shovel through. So after that, I have seen 2 out of these 10 episodes and are considering watching another 3. I don't make things easy for myself, do I? lol

I can over all agree with your list, although I would adjust the numbering. Where I differ is I don't find Revenge of The Cybermen and The Time Monster quite so bad, and would suggest replacing them on the list with The Celestrial Toymaker and The Carnival of Monsters as the more awful 3rd Doctor story as The Time Monster does have Delgado's hammy acting and the camp to redeem it. Power of Kroll is bad, but I think The Invisible Enemy is more deserving of the list.

I'm surprised by how rarely An Earthly Child episodes 2-4 make these "Worst Of..." lists. Maybe it feels like sacrilege to malign the first serial? Or unfair to harshly judge it when everyone involved in the show were still unsure what they were doing? But... It is so frightfully dull. Even by the standards of 60's Doctor Who, which can be slow and uneventful at times, these three episodes are just awful. Boring beyond reason. I agree with you that "The Twin Dilemma" is not as horrible as people often say. The giant slugs and the underlying premise were both rubbish, but I thought the makeup and costume designs for the Jacondans were excellent. I disagree with you (and most other people) regarding "Time and the Rani", for despite its many problems, I really liked this one and applaud some of the clever and ambitious effects attempted for the story. Missing from this list is "The Underwater Menace", which has 15 minutes of good story in the third episode sandwiched among four episodes of mind-numbingly tedious filler.
