If you monitor well enough, you might get the better shoes at deep discount in the same year as well. Sometimes, the stock is sold out already in the following year or sizes are not available. I got Adidas Takumi Sen 8 for $76 and $72. Endorphin Speed 3 for $103, Endorphin Pro 3 for $136, Adios Pro 3 for $175. Well, technically TS8 was launched in December 2021 but I still consider that as 2022 shoe.
@@TolunayOrkun Yes, you don't have to wait until next year with all the holiday sales that have been going on over the past month-and-half or so. I nearly doubled my collection because of it over this period! Haha. After getting the Prime X Strung when it first became available at full price, I loved it so much that I got three more pairs at below $200, including one at $150 direct from Adidas during their Black Friday sale. Some people, using other coupons, have even bought this shoe at below $100.
I decided to jump on the Saucony bandwagon and found myself really enjoying both the Triumph 20 and Endorphin Speed 3 rotation. I can kind of mix and match them to whatever my feet are feeling that day rather than only using each for a specific type of running.
Went with the Novablast 3 TR. liked the regular 3’s but the TR version gave me better traction overall. Thanks Kofuzi for your honest straightforward reviews!
It's hard to call a versatile daily trainer when you can't do any speed runs with novablast. Sure you can cruise around and but it feels so clunky on foot if you pick up the pace with it. Also both Puma and Adidas have great versatile daily trainers I'm surprised none of them on your list.
Great list, kofuzi! The Mach 4 was basically my daily trainer of choice this year, coupled with the Speed 3 being my long run/race shoe. BUT, I have to agree that the Speed 3 does leave the legs a bit beat up on certain runs… still a lot of miles left in mine so we’ll see. Gotta get me a pair of Novablast 3’s.
Speed 3 is a daily trainer excellent for Tempo to Recovery pace. Speed 2 has much more pop.. Novablast 3 definitely fit for slow or medium long distances but clunky at fast pace. Mach 5 is very close to the Speed 3 but feels more special..
I think the Mach 5 is pretty similar to the novablast 3 (and I thought the two were pretty similar last year). if you like the one, you probably will like the other.
Puma velocity nitro 2 could have a spot here, it is a good all arounder, covers recovery, easy and moderate paces, dual density foams provide decent cushioning, plus considering it is frequently on sale, so it makes more sense than some top 5 shoes as a daily trainer.
Having both the Novablas 3 and the Mach 5 I prefer the Mach 5. Both are very comfortable but as a heelstriker I have some issues with the higher drop in the Novablast 3 from time to time. The Mach 5 is so comfortable and always puts a smile on my face while running in them.
I hear thats the theory behind it but i find myself automatically compensating for the increased drop and not heel striking. So its kinda like running in high heels unless u force urself to use it.
Nice comparison Kofuzi. Not related at all but just wondering one stuff as i am not living in the us, what’s your thoughts on Tracksmith. Thanks in advance.
I can say without a doubt the ASICS novablast 3 deserves the number 1 spot, I do every type of run in these shoes and it handles everything like a champ.
Agreed. I even did a marathon under torrential rain in these. I have both Speed 2 and 3 but decided to run with NB3. My legs don't feel tired after all my runs in these.
@@MrJermson yup, these have been a life saver, it’s even helping with some niggles that I use to feel with Peg 38’s I use to run in. I’m at 222 miles and I’m definitely gearing up to buy another one.
@@dnegel9546 I’ve done a a few walks in them also, the longest being 6.5 miles, it was on pretty even surface and it was just fine, felt really comfortable just the same. These shoes love to go fast, I’ve done some all out hill sprints and they’re very grippy. When the road is wet I don’t feel as confident as I would like to though.
Did anyone experience size and fit issues with NB3? My story: - 10.5 US Saucony Triumph 20 fits my feet perfectly, amazing shoe - 11 US Asics Noosa Tri 13… nearly 1000km, no problem - 11 US Asics Novablast 3 was mega wide in toe box and heel was sliding. I returned a 10 and 9.5 because too snug. Also found it way too slippery! I’ve now bought a pair of Speed 3 with which I’m thinking to run my first marathon. Thoughts?
Man I just did not love the Novablast 3. I got the mostly black with white color way. Idk if it’s the color way or just the shoe but it feels so hot running in it and it’s not anywhere as soft as the Novablast 2 for me. I know the more v4 isn’t a daily shoe but mannnnnn I love that shoe. My shoe of the year for sure.
I liked seeing you running past the CITGO sign in Kenmore square ,Boston. Full disclosure ,Being a Bostonian boy, I have to give the win to the local company that is killing it in 2022: New Balance. My daily trainer for the road is the 880V12. btw the 880V12 has a dual layer of Fresh foamX and Fuel cell in the front. Thats' why you noticed a special feeling running , its very cushioned in the heel and responsive in the front toe off. The price being $104 right now up to $135 retail cannot be beat
I have only run in the Novablast 1 and , although I took it to 450 miles, it was not a fun shoe. The insoles kept sliding around and the shoes felt dead, especially compared to the speeds. Is version 3 much different? I have been using the gel nimbus as a daily trainer recently and have been liking it for that (I got a pair at a 100-dollar discount so just about anything is good for $35).
Hated the novablast 1. So didn’t bother with the 2 but have now bought the 3 and love it. What a difference. The 3 no longer feels like you are running in stilettos. That 8mm drop makes all the difference for me. That and the foam change.
Intrigued that the NB 880 wins over the 1080 esp considering the new changes to the 1080. Personally the 880 is my daily and I’m saving the 1080 for longer runs. Im still looking for a speed shoe later on in my marathon training so this was so helpful! (Will a Rebel 2 or 3 complete my rotation?? 👀)
the 1080 for me has always been a bit of a conundrum when it comes to the arbitrary boundaries of Top 5 Lists. Is it a daily trainer (giving NB 3 daily training shoes?) or is it a max cushion shoe (giving NB 3 max cushion shoes?)
I'm so happy to see the NB880 finally get some love! I think they are a great shoe at an even better price. They're hardly ever reviewed or talked about but they are a wonderful all around shoe that won't let you down. If I don't know what kind of run I plan on doing, I always pick the 880 because it can pick up the pace or go easy.
if you look at all the NB pros, whenever they are not in a plated shoe, they are in the 880. not the More v4 and not the 1080 and not the SC Trainer. it's always the 880.
@@kofuzi That's a very interesting observation! Why do you think that's the case? My 1080 is currently at 850km and I'm considering getting the 880 next.
Every reviewer raves about the Novablast so I got version 2 and I hate it. It feels heavy and clunky and I sound like a Clydesdale clip clopping down the road.
Thanks ko! Just picked up a 880 on sale. Enjoyed my V10 but wanted something different so tried the Ghost, and after being disappointed with the durability are back to the 880.
ASICS Nova 3 is frankly below expectations. I wore 10km shoes and sealed them. There was tremendous praise from experts, but I couldn't expect more than just the price.
@@kofuzi I bought AlphaFly, VaporFly, Adios Pro3, Prime X Strung, Endorphin Pro3, etc. at the $140 level, but I bought them with a special opportunity!
I currently have no business getting new shoes, but looking forward to the novablast 3 when my current daily trainers (880 v12) die. The 880s have been treating well though. Not fun or exciting, but reliable
have you run deviate nitro 2 yet? I also think it's a great shoe. is in my rotation with the Speed 3 I now use the Puma more often in the winter when it's slippery because it really has an outstanding outsole.
a key aspect on choosing a daily trainer is its price, because we put too much miles on them in very short time. I would rather go for the SL20.3 or the Floatride (both get significant discounts on ~50$), they do the job descently and are a steal
I just found a pair yesterday for 40 dollars at a store got one for my brother and I and my cousin also got a pair. The speed 2s feel better for me then the 3s
I switched back to Asics after not using them for ten years, and it made me wonder why I ever stopped using them. Through that, I discovered that my foot has changed to where I need stability shoes (the kayano in this case.) My feet have been very happy and I don’t get injuries nearly as much as I used to, just sore muscles as expected.
They’re each very different, but there are overlapping use cases. If you feel like there’s something missing, try the third. If not, no need But running doesn’t have to be a contest of asceticism. It’s also ok to have a variety of shoes that you keep around for funsies
No Topos? I HATED Saucony's two pairs I burned through last year (2022). First pair, had horrible fit and finish but I wore them for runs anyway, and they fell apart in under 50 miles. Second pair, same thing happened. Won't buy Saucony ever again... I burned through a couple of Under Armour's too, the HOVR machina 2 and the HOVR machina off-road. Neither lived up to their cost. Both are dead at 225 miles. So, I've moved on to Topo's Phantom 2 to see if they'll survive the summer. Hope so. I'd love a review of anything from the Topo line.
I want to try the new 880 besides some mixed reviews around RU-vid. It seems interesting the mixture of some fuelcell foam with the Fresh Foam middlesole.
Not sure about the 880 on the list . . . I actually reach for either a lighter Skechers shoe or an Endorphin Pro for the cushioning every day. The Fresh Foam I liked 3 years ago but now seems altmodisch
The 880V12 has an updated midsole of fresh foamX(softest fresh foam) and Fuelcell (found on the top tier NB racers). the V12 is way better than any version before.
I really like deviate nitro 2 upper, really comfy and looks great, the midsole is not bad but I don't know maybe its the thick outsole but it lacks bit of bounce to be my top pick. Pegasus trail 3, I got the gtx version, I like the shoe overall but not so much for running, its relatively bulky and I think I will use it more as an hiking shoe. I personally prefer daily trainers that are speed oriented such as tempo next and speed 2.
@@kofuzi Hi! I had to specify a few things. I'm the top 5 running shoes for this year. Then I'm not a long distance runner. I run between 8 and 10km, pretty much always in tempo running. I do this 3 times a week. Once a month I run 21 km. I've tried them all of the top 5 at 21km and for me it works, of course by rotation. Nike pegasus 3, I use them when I choose to run through the woods, trail.
I have everything on this list except the 880v12 and they are all great in their different ways, but my favorite daily trainer now is the Puma Deviate Nitro 2. We need a review of this shoe, kofuzi!
@@kofuzi I know it's plated but I'd put it in that category of all-round versatile shoes you can use on a daily basis. It does fast/short, long/slow and everything in between really well. What category would you put the DN2 in? Ultimately, I guess everyone's usage case of a particular shoe model will be different.
Where do you slot the Pegasus and why? That's my go to daily trainer that I can do anything in. Your thoughts on that might lead me to something else to try. I'm currently going between the Pegasus and Boston as I don't like to run the majority of my miles in the exact same shoe
@kofuzi It was great meeting you this year at CIM shake out. Thanks for all the hard work and time you put into all of your content. It’s has helped me a lot in my running decisions this season. Picking up a pair of Novablast 3 for 2023…appreciate the solid review. Happy New Years.
Love the 880 as well! I like brooks lately, really started to become my go to shoes. The reason is that the shoe box is a bit wider than the 880 and that is just a bit more comfy.
I’ve had the opposite experience, I’ve felt that the 880 shoes feel more comfy and wider toe box. One thing I don’t like about brooks is the excessive 12mm stack height and I get constant pain and the bottom of my feet for how tight it is.
I haven't tried out the Mach 5's yet but I'm running in the Mach Supersonic's and so far I love them. Has anyone tried both the MSupersonics and the M5? How does it compare?
I have had mixed results with returning to the endorphin speed 3, but I weigh how much I enjoy the shoe against how rare my issue seems to be amongst others
Love the NB Rebel 3, it has cushion and pop at the same time. The Novablast did not agree with my relatively wide foot, so I had to return them.Look forward to trying the Speed 3; Speed 1,2 for me are still two of the best shoes I have ever run in (except for the slightly unstable heel). Personally, I am enjoying a lot the Saucony Triumph 20, a well-cushioned, dynamic, reliable and versatile daily trainer.
I'd agree with this list with the caveat that I've never run in the Fuel Cell or the Saucony shoe. My current trainers are the Nova 3 and the Hoka Mach 4 & Clifton 8's for daily trainer. The Aspics Evoride 2 for tempo runs and the Hoka Torrent for trail runs. Hoka Carbon X is still my go to racing shoe.
I think the reason that 880 has been feeling really good this year is they actually implemented fuel cell in the forefoot cushioning(the orange part of the cushioning), so you get a nice mix of Fresh Foam and Fuel cell.
Exactly....you nailed it! I'm surprised no one else had noticed? NB shoes getting snubbed by people that dont' know what they are missing. The best priced dual layer shoe on the market this year. A true workhorse daily trainer with awesome performance for faster runs . Priced from$100 -130 cannot be beat
I agree with place the Enorphion speen 3 in this category. I like that shoe. I used it as my daily workout shoe along with the Triumph 19 for recovery runs.
Very interesting - I tend to feel similarly on a lot of shoes with you (although I did not like the NB 1 or 2) but I would have 3 of your 5 on my list as well I am in agreement on the Mach 5 and 880 for sure and have put 100s of mile in on those - I tried the Rebel on (and I love both v1 and v2) and was planning on getting them LSR didnt have the color I wanted yet... Actually ran in them with you and the BITR team in NYC in them - but now you have me thinking Novablast too. I would also throw the 2 Pumas in my list both v2 of the Velocity and and Deviate are really good. Saucony has not worked for me for a while but if I get a chance Ill try the new Endorphins too
I have really listened to your suggestions and bought the novablast trail and the rebel v3 . I am very different size than kofuzi 6’1” and 200lbs and still love both shoes. Have been impressed with winter running in the novablast trail version. Got traction and cushion :-). For me the rebel is great for short speedier quick foot turnover exercise. At my size the rebel is not for longer than 5-8 ish miles but it is awesome for keeping my form good and just love that it is not super maximal . I think small stability muscles I use in the rebel are good for my running longevity:-) thanks for the suggestions keep up the great work !
Loving the running footage- pun intended, of your intro. Couldn't agree more on your reviews about the Novablast 3 and Mach 5 and I have both of them in my current rotation.
I’ve run in the Novablast, the Mach 5, and the Speed. The NB and M5 felt very similar (different but equal, if that makes sense) while the Speed felt like it did return something. All great choices, no doubt. One odd thing: I’ve apparently gained a 1/2 size since last year. All the shoes felt better at 11.5 vs my normal 11. I haven’t increased my mileage but maybe my 240lbs fat butt is causing my poor feet to spread out. 🤣
They cheat on size so that they can quote a lighter weight and lower maximum stack in the size check for composition. Some now size 9 is actually 8.5 and has 40 mm but the runner gets higher stack for the competition and its still legal.
the 1080 falls in a weird spot for me when it comes to the artificial boundaries of top 5 lists. it's the third best daily trainer in the NB lineup and the third best max cushion shoe in the NB lineup. but if you zoom out and stop thinking about category groupings, it's just a really good shoe that I can recommend to a lot of people for a lot of uses.
1080 has a max cushion fresh faomX. The 880V12 has both freshfoamX and Fuelcell, much better blend of comfort and performance. A do it all workhorse shoe............Number 1 on my list😁
@@dewhoop The Mach 4 is stiffer and less bouncy than the Mach 5 I think the Mach 5 makes you want to run faster or at least I found myself running faster. Don't get me wrong the Mach 4 is a good shoe and if you never have run in the Mach 5 you'll never know the difference.
The Ghost 15 would be considered in this category, right? I just got a pair as a gift and am continuously tempted by the Novoblast 3, but imagine they'll be too similar.
I really enjoyed running in the Endorphin Speed, but I've rolled my ankle badly in them so many times. Any comparable shoes you can recommend that have a slightly wider base/ more stability? I love my Kinvaras for speed days, but getting into higher mileage can be rough with them.
How about a pseudomax category this year? Shoes like the invincibles, adidas prime x, asics glideride kind of fit as they don't fit the traditional max cushion category.
I understand what you're saying. there is a somewhat definable category there, but I think I've covered a lot of those shoes in the review I did with Drew Whitcomb and Weartesters. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MSo_rufiBBE.html
