I’ve played my fair share of Shin Megami Tensei games, from mainline, to spin-offs, great remasters and… not so great. After playing a good amount of the games I think my top 5 favorite smt games are pretty set in stone. I personally greatly value story over gameplay for my taste in games so the list may have some picks that many may overlook at first due to their age or how different they are gameplay wise. If you’re anything like me and can look past some change, you’ll have a fantastic time with these titles. This list will cover all mainline games like 1 through 5 as well as the spin offs, like Digital Devil Saga, and Devil Survivor, but it will be limited to 1 game per series, so no repeats of Devil Survivor 1 and 2, or Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, I will have to choose one. This list will not cover Persona as that is another video I have planned in the future and demands more in depth discussion. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum in this video so if you are interested in playing one of these games, skip that section and check it out. Without any further ado let’s jump into the list.
This video will serve as an introduction to shin megami tensei as well as my top 5 favorite games in the series. If you are already well versed in shin megami tensei however, this may give you some inspiration as to what to play next as some of the picks are not what you'd expect. The spoilers are kept to a bare minimum on purpose so as to open up the tony4you audience to people that may not be all too familiar with shin megami tensei or megaten as a whole and be a great jumping off point to enjoy some more of my content. The top 5 shin megami tensei games is a video I've been meaning to make for a long time and hope people can understand my taste in the games a bit more, despite how my channel has been focused on smt lore more so than the games. As a channel focused on the smt lore however if the games weren't fun to play, I would never have gotten so engrossed in the series in the first place, and a palatable top 5 smt games list is a perfect way to share my thoughts. Each game will have a mini story summary for the introduction and some gameplay examples as well as my thoughts on the overall

I would like preface my top 5 with a explanation for two of the spots. SJ would've been my second pick if it didn't resort to OOC brainwashing for its Law and Chaos routes and while I do acknowledge Nocturne is good game and its lore and characters are indeed interesting, part of what makes SMT in general fun for me is the standard alignment system. Sure a lot of the endings at the end of the day are Law (remaking the world in one way or another) or Chaos (TDE) but it just isn't the same IMO. At the end of the day its more of a game I like to talk about than actually play so its not on my list. With that said my top 5 are, 1. Devil Survivor 1: Overclocked 2. SMT4 3. SJ 4 SMT1 5. SMTV

Idea for new video: origin of the names of skills, I like the originality when it comes to the naming of skills and how it is not just stuff like fire blast. Some of the really out there skills are Hassohapa and Antichton.

I can't lie, he says you won't be disappointed, but I started playing like 3 days ago and my god am I bored personally so far. Gameplay and soundtrack ( not bad but the same ones keep popping, HELP ) are putting me to sleep ... I'm struggling to find the motivation to keep going.

Some of the fights are very unfair to the point that I only won by chance. Managing ailments can be a pain in the ass since no demons ever seem to list if they have any ailment resistances ( unless I am missing something, PLEASE TELL ME OTHERWISE). SPOILERS FOR A BOSS FIGHT START HERE! The first Asura boss fight has him inflicting the Rage ailment ( you lose control of your demons and they start attacking enemies or team mates randomly) which from what I have seen online no demons or equipment grant any resistance to. I only won due to the only demon I could fuse who had the right immunities not getting killed by his rage infected team mates and the ai being shockingly idiotic. NO MORE SPOILERS! Also the exploration has not aged that well imo. In smt 5 I had to look online to figure out how to find one or two paths to complete optional side quests but overall found it enjoyable and a huge improvement. I found Strange Journey's first person dungeon crawling very frustrating at times and there is a lot of traps and teleports that you have no way of knowing they are there at all. Other smt games I have played have this element but this game has SO MUCH More of it. I hate to admit how often I needed online guides just to get to find the next main story bit. If these things sound like a deal breaker than you may want to consider getting the Redux version instead. Redux has a lot of quality of life improvements and i hear some bosses are less frustrating. There is also more content in redux but imo it kinda doesn't mesh with the main story at times. You get more endings though along with the originals. Asura still seems like bullshit in both games though.

Tbh Strange Journey is what really sold me on SMT too. I started with the Persona games and was like "Alright this is pretty good, but what's mainline like?" And since I was starting to learn emulation at the time, I decided to emulate Strange Journey on the DS. I immediately loved the millitaristic atmosphere and how cutthroat close the crew feels to having their mission blow up in their face. My favorite game in the series is Devil Survivor, but Strange Journey was what had me hooked onto the series like moth to a lamp.

My first SMT was Strange Journey Redux on 3DS. And it Is the first and only game that actually made me feel anxious. I didn't felt welcome to a world worth exploring, I got party members that don't loved the protagonists, to NPCs that are alwasy close to breaking down in despair. I didn't understand the Fusión system, and got spoked after a Error fusión. I got scared that my elections didn't let me stay at Neutral alignment. I got destroyed by Jimenez after a whole game of not using Buffs and Debuffs, and died frigging 10 times to Shekinah after a night of literally not sleeping a bit and without any More options for Fusion. And I got lost both at Eridanus, Womb of Grief and felt reality frigging weird after fighting Maria (being Mexican and all). And I fucking loved every moment of It. It was trully an unique experience, one I don't get why people doesnt like Redux. The added OST Is fucking awesome.

SMT4 is my favourite, its the world and lore from the whole series that I enjoyed the most. Demon Hunters having an association to hunt demons just fits so well with the core demon summoning thing being given to a lot of people in tokyo, you can totally see them trying to organize that for the people that live inside. And this had one of my favourite neutral endings too alongsidde strange journey's.

Always nice to see someone that appreciates nocturne's narrative rather than just writing it off as a game with no story. My personal favorite parallel within the narrative is how the mentality surrounding choosing the true demon ending is eerily similar to Takao's mentality about bringing about the conception at the beginning of the game. The game starts with a person losing their faith in humanity, which leads to them being manipulated by someone else to bring about an act of destruction unlike anything else seen in the history of mankind, and the game can end with this same exact type of action by the demi-fiend by choosing TDE. Ironically, despite TDE being about breaking the cycle of the conception system, it's the only ending in nocturne that truly comes full-circle.

Very Solid List, I kind of struggle with a Top 5 for this series too. But If I had to pick my own (No Order, and not including Persona) 1. Digital Devil Saga 2 2. Devil Survivor 2 3. SMT: Nocturne 4. Devil Survivor 1 5. SMTV (Gameplay completely overpowers the shortcomings of it imo)

agree with V, story and characters lacking but the amount of fun i had playing that game was unlike anything else. i cant wait to see what they build off of its ideas

@@k2a2l2 Best way I can describe SMT V is "unfinished." The foundation for something amazing is all there, but it feels like something happened in the execution. That being said, its gameplay and basic story to LITERALLY BECOME GOD is freaking glorious and the return pillar is by far the best QoL improvement in any Atlus game.

My first SMT was SJ and i even bet then 100% Honestly the hardest part really was to figure out how to fusion, bc later you can start having to notice that if you use amp and boost skills of certain elements, you start to hit really hard (bc they stack ) And also there is a low level of this game that let you know how enemies work, i really enjoy SJ and i want to try If... next

I've played DS2. A lot of people bash the "Social Link" system as "durr hurr dey copy Pearsonar" but I think the way it's handled fits well with the alignment and choice system as it allows you to do something no other SMT game lets you: negotiate with the Law/Chaos sides instead of being forced to kill them. On the "best ending", you actually sway the head Law and Chaos reps to your side and get them as party members, and I don't know if this is a common opinion but I found that incredibly satisfying, because it's NOT EASY. You need to get their Fates to max and be very careful with your dialogue responses. In a sense this is true to life too, as talking down an extremist is incredibly difficult but not impossible, and I like a game that doesn't make it a lost cause but doesn't sugarcoat it either. Oh, and in some cases, Fate levels affect if characters live or die.

I really appreciate what you had to say about smt 3's story. It was my first smt game when I got into the series a couple years ago, and I really enjoyed the less "in your face" narrative. It almost felt like a fromsoft game with how you would explore a desolate world looking forward to the next nail biting boss and story cutscene. To this day it is still my favorite story in smt.

i just beat smt iv for the first time a few nights ago and it was such a great experience, really excited to play the other games in the series since i only recently got into this series. so many games to play and im really glad i found smt, probably my favorite game franchise now

Strange Journey is in a league of its own when it comes to the themes and ideas presented. None of the other games did as good of a job making me contemplate what I was doing and whether it was the right thing to do. It really felt like a fever dream getting through that game, despite the combat not being smooth as other games and the dungeon crawling being a bit tedious at times. The atmosphere and soundtrack are incredibly unique from any game I've ever played. Even though SMT4 is still my overall favourite in the series, it didn't accomplish those aspects as well as SJ did. Just like you, I don't even care for sci fi that much but that game was just special.

dang, just found this channel recently, loved the videos I've seen, curious on the Persona video now that you mentioned it in this one, then noticed the upload history. RIP gonna have to wait 2 weeks to a month for the next one. The curse of finding a good video the day it drops. Keep up the good work! I haven't really played a lot of the SMT games. The first SMT game I had played was Digital devil saga and I believe at the time it was actually a combo pack of both games, seemed like a great deal and loved them, was my intro into the series and got me into persona so DDS is definitely in my top 5 Never found anyone to talk to about those games back in the day given how obscure they were. Devil survivor and nocturne were the only other SMT non persona games I had ever played and beaten. until I played SMTV and loved that as well. Honestly, I got walled in SMTIV at the minotaur and kinda stopped playing it haha.

My first SMT was Digital Devil Saga 1 and boy did it give me a shock in terms of style, visual and story telling! Even if people don't like the two Devil Saga games I hold them in my heart because of how I enjoyed them and how goddamn punishing they were at first. After some time I played Nocturne but by them I had already tempered myself on how to handle these games so I wasn't that taken aback by the harshness of the game. I would include persona 3 FES in this list because I played it shortly after and these 3(4) games are the ones my mind goes to when I hear the words "Shin Megami Tensei".

Thanks for this video, you've made very nice choices in your list and I enjoyed hearing your reasons for including the games on there. Choosing just 5 from the series is a rather difficult thing in itself, mine would be the following in no particular order : Nocturne, SMT IV, SMT V, Digital Devil Saga, and Digital Devil Saga 2. I was tempted to just choose all 5 mainline games, but I chose the Digital Devil Saga games over I & II because I thought the combat and character-building was really great in those games. I also really like how bleak the story was that involved characters in world where they were turned into demons and forced into cannibalism and how their escape to what was promised to them as a better plane of existence only led them to a world on the brink of destruction.

I'm so glad to see someone putting respect on Devil Survivor 2's name. I've seen alot of people brush it off as a lesser version of DeSu 1, and while that may be true in some aspects, the character interactions really resonated with me in 2, I enjoyed the characters so much(Honorable mention to Fumi). Hibiki Kuze, may just be one of my favorite SMT Protagonists I've ever experienced (Persona or Not), I haven't had a character leave me on the floor laughing my ass off thanks to their dialogue choices as much as he has in a long time. Not to mention the game's approach to the alignment system is a plus to me, as there's isn't exactly a Law/Chaos thing going on and both reps having traits of law and chaos in the societies they wish to create and lengths they'll go to achieve it.

Devil Survivor was the first SMT I ever played, but Devil Survivor 2 is the one who keep me deep into SMT series to this day. Thats concept of cosmic space and unsignificant of mankind really make me belief it's the best SMT for me

Redux was my first SMT, and made me fall in love with the series. It scratched every itch I have for games. I skipped the womb of grief content too, somewhat accidentally, so I’ve heard I also got the better narrative. I would defend the demon co-op system by saying it makes battles less polarized and allows for more emergent strategy, as well as, in my experience, allowing for more variation in builds rather than treating every demon as a weakness hitting machine.

Some of the setup of Strange Journey (particularly the whole south pole inner earth stuff) really reminds me of a cross between the legends of "Agartha" and the whole WW2 conspiracy about Nawt Z's fleeing to some south pole inner earth with some sort of wild and mystical technology.

Thanks a lot! Redux to me has new plot elements that don't mesh well with the original's narrative, as well as the art style being worse to me. Overall though they are both games worth playing

I'm still a newbie on the SMT series and i've played few of them (3 to be exact, or 5 if you count Persona), but my favorite is Devil Survivor 1, because of the SRPG gameplay, story and characters and probably the best handled alignment system (i also played Devil Survivor 2, but i thought the story on that one was underwhelming for me)

Strange Journey is also one of my favorites. My others are SMT 1, 2 and the Raidou games. Honorable mention is Apocalypse. Apocalypse not so much for cast and story, but gameplay and exploration which was super satisfying. I came off persona 3 for my actual first franchise wise, and smt 4 and then DeSu1 were the first smt titles I played but sadly didn't resonate with them very much. I left SMT alone until a year or two ago and actually went to the very beginning with Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei and played all the mainlines save NINE and Imagine and went from there and then plowed through various spin offs.

strange journey especially redux is masterpiece yes I agree. Di demon co-op, the soundtrack (shoji meguro hee-hoo !), story (when jimenez and bugaboo in a fish tank is the best scene, also when mastema give hymn to zelenin godamn that is awesome), the character too super awesome (remember louisa ferre *gasp). Everything is masterpiece !

I have 391 hours, 26 minutes spent playing Devil Survival 2 Record Breaker for the Nintendo 3DS. The voice acting is first rate. The plot is pretty good. It is the New Game+ and different endings which gives the game a ton of replayability. Combat could have been slightly better, though is still enjoyable. I found myself struggling against The Necromancer barely winning after 20 hours and just skipping Alice entirely at new game +2. After looking up tactics online. I realized tactics I had forgotten. Physical attacks are obsurdly broken in this game. To such a high degree they could have added a boss above Alice. There is some balance to physical attacks. They have a chance to miss unless you use your ability slot for Marksman. Physical resistance or immunity is seen on many enemies throughout the game. Making a varied list of magic attacks more reliable. The almighty element is resisted by very few enemies in the game. Making it tempting to just spam for every encounter. The strongest almighty spell has a cost of 75 mana. Which makes it unreliable for use as your only attack spell. On the other hand, physical attack skills do cost hit-points to use. This can result in unexpected deaths if you are not careful managing when to use special attacks. Once you establish a healing loop, this is no longer a problem.

Your videos are always so great! I always think to myself "which SMT games are the best?". I'm really glad Nocturne and Strange Journey are on here, but I'm not surprised that they are :3 I am curious, why is the original Strange Journey on here specifically? I asked this before from other people and didn't get much other then it's slightly harder and different art style. Also I wish I had a way to play the rest of these on this list, I only got to play Nocturne, SMT5, and part of Redux :') I sadly don't have a 3DS anymore since it broke. And lack a system that plays the Raidou games. But one day it'll happen!

Redux have: Commander Skills, Essences,new dungeon - Womb of Grief, new (optional) endings and Alex. He mentioned in previous video, he hate new law ending in SJ Redux, and Shekinah is another evil version of YHVH.

Aaa thank you for including Raidou 2 in your favourite because imo this game underrated... Raidou 2 is my fav all the time, I never get bored to replay this game again & again. The soundtrack is amazing , the story not to complicated and the story theme just hits hard the moral dilemma, anxiety & how luck can affect our point of view & I think the story well more directed unlike SA. Though I still feel a bit eh for aligment to be in this game, sure it's more for Raidou personality but meh... I haven't finisih Nocturne but I think it prolly will be solid to be in no 2 & haven't try SJ unfortunately

Like many people I got into the series with Persona (3&4 in my case) and SMT was always that big thing that was the title before the game. However, I quickly changed tune when I decided to watch a let's play of SMT IV and was enamoured. When I got a 3DS for myself, IV was the game I bought immediately. I've now played it 3 times. It can have it's issues but I really enjoy the fast pace of the combat and aside from quests required to beat the game hidden without directions (I don't want to take photos of ginza) I enjoyed the relative freedom that the game gave me when it came to progressing the story. Add on the music and aesthetic and you have some good times. I honestly think the faster pace of IV and IVA's gameplay has spoiled me on the rest of the series.

I'm a simple man. I see Strange Journey, my first SMT experience, as the #1 slot, I like. Been subbed for a while, already. I understand people's qualms with Redux, but I still enjoy it. Granted, I tend to find enjoyment in most games people don't like overall.

Ever since SMT V got announced, I've been trying to play/replay every MegaTen game in release order, and currently, I'm on Persona 4, but Devil Summoner 4 being here is super surprising. I really liked the first one, but the combat started to drag near the end of the game. Hearing how much praise the sequel gets from people who played it, it actually makes me excited to play next.

I'm delighted to see my top favorite SMT games are on this list: Raidou 2 and SMT III: Nocturne My first game in SMT series is actually Persona 4 but Raidou 2 and Nocturne are the games that hooked me with the series as a whole. I play these games back in my formative years and I absolutely agree playing Raidou 2 left memorable impression that even built up part of my self growing up. The setting 1920s Japan, jazz music, black cat motif, detective agency - many stuff that I like can be trace back to this game. I'm honestly impressed that although Raidou is a silent protagonist, his personality is very coherent and strong. Nocturne is my first entry to mainline SMT series and I never realize this game is somewhat the outlier one with the rest of the series. If this game has similar cyberpunk aesthetic, I might not like it as much. But the way this game introduced us right after the apocalypse and we explore the aftermath of it - my young self was so impressed of how cool this setting was. It is a hard game and I don't remember finishing it, yet I will always say this is my favorite game and it also has influenced my growing up self. I agree Raidou 2 is better than Raidou 1 and tbh I don't really understand the plot until I searched more about SMT 1 and 2. Raidou 1 has many cool cutscene (and a very funny one). I wish we have more Raidou series, I really love the supporting characters (especially Narumi and Tae) and want to see more of them. Anyway, great video! Given the bias against Law bothers you, I would have figured you'd jump at the chance to dissect King Abaddon being comically biased towards Chaos.

I’ve been playing Persona Q and just finished Soul Hackers on the 3DS, and I will never not hate random encounters, BUT I gotta say, I enjoy PQ immensely. It’s not my favorite Shin Megami Tensei game, because it’s Persona, and it’s not even my favorite MegaTen game (that would be Persona 4 Golden), but it has made me want to get SMT IV, Apocalypse, Strange Journey, and Redux. I’ve heard very good things about all those games, especially Strange Journey, so I’m hyped to get on that after I go through PQ2. I have a feeling that may knock off SMT V as my favorite SMT game. The concept of you being an adult in a sci-fi setting in SMT seems so cool and original to me. I also like the sprite art , lol, from what I’ve seen. But to answer the question, my favorite SMT game is SMT V. Played SMT III, that was my first SMT game, but random encounters really hurt my enjoyment of it, though I did like it quite a bit. I like how those two games are kind of opposites, or at least that’s how I played them-Nocturne TDE has you at the epitome of chaos, while SMT V Law ending has you healing what TDE destroyed. It’s quite cool.

Nocturne always #1 for me. Played it on release when I was 12 and it instantly captured me. I never played just a desolate atmosphere, difficulty ass blasting you and the mind-blowing story when you conceptually think about it. DDS1 and 2 are also good, along with the Raidou spin-offs. And SMTV for the upped wiafi graphics: Cletic figures in HD baby! And the soundtrack is top 3 OST's of all time for me. YHWH I love Nocturne!

I found strange journey to be easy outside of map exploration. I’m playing the DS version with no passwords but sources alone give you so many ways to make disgustingly OP demons so that passwords aren’t even needed to break the game. I auto battled my way through 70% of encounters

I will say that I played Nocturne after Joker enters Smash, but what really made me play Nocturne was the angel Metatron. I am a fan of that angel. But after the beginning of the game I was like: "What The Hell? In most RPGs, the protagonist will always save the world or restore it but at later game. But here, the world is at the very beginning of the game. Most of the games are nearly starting with a pacific world, goes in adventure, explore the story and narrative, and in the very end, trying to destroy the world but a bunch of students defeated them. But here, is Peace world, and then, destroyed from the very beginning. And by first thing you do is to look for your friends and protect them. But they got separated, gained different perspective and try to change the world. When you made up your mind you understand your friend had no longer sense and will be in conflict one to another. And is up to you to save or stop them, or even join them. But when maniax showed up, Lucifer's arc, which is the true ending, became your ally when you defeat him and gains God Knowledge later in SMT V (I heavily believe that SMT III and SMT V are in the same world, and the one world demi fiend created is the people he saved after the TDE). SMT 3 is, by far my top JRPG game I had ever played. I haven't played SMT SJ yet, but I will do it

In nocturne actually the characters and the "history" is more like philosophical tropes, like they are not characters and they are more like symbolism and that´s great, not necessary long cinematics and endless characters monologues, and that simplistic narrative aproach stay with you a lot more

Good top actually. Although I have a sligthly different preference. For me it would be something like this: 5. Devil Summoner Soul Hackers (the most SMT spin off imo) 4. Shin Megami Tensei (yes, the first one. Its setting, story and world amazes me til today) 3. Shin Megami Tensei III NOCTURNE HD Remaster (bc it looks better) 2. Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey (anything to add, the best one storywise) 1. Shin Megami Tensei IV (being the pinacle of the series) Yeah... I'm more into mainline topics. But I also love Persona approachment (especially the first ones), Majin Tensei, Devil Survivor gameplay and story, Digital Devil Saga concept, and classic MegaTen as a whole.

Two things: 1. Anyone have any ideas of a good way I can play the Raidou games? I've made it my objective to play almost all of the SMT games. (Even if I am a filthy Neutral and Chaos fan boy) 2. Gonna guess Tony doesn't like Redux as it kinda takes the old endings and dunks on them, turning them all into what are more or less bad endings. Though I will say Redux has it's charm to me for sure, even if it is mainly just in the extra areas and such, I mean I don't think any game has you fight what is more or less the female version of God (Like if YMVH is the male the one you fight in Strange Journey is the female)
