There are several great crane enthusiast Facebook groups. I went and asked them what their top five tips for aspiring/new apprentices would be. The response was overwhelming. I tried my best to group the answers into five categories and present them in an easily digestible form.
My Benchmade is so old they dont have it anymore but this one is sweet: amzn.to/2TiPWn7
By far my most used tool the Leatherman Charge TTI: amzn.to/2KrxMg4

I ❤ THIS! I have said all of this! Humble! Verify! A real operator will check behind everyone…we don’t know where their mind is and what they might be thinking about and what’s going on with their home life and they just miss something simple …a good operator will respectfully and kindly check behind others to be sure everything is secure before they make that lift and you might save them their job as well as your own. Confident, safe and humble operators are the best! ❤️ this VIDEO! Good knowledge and advice! Let’s do lunch! LOL

I agree I don’t stand and watch if someone needs a hand. My gloves are always dirty I always let the riggers know that they are professional and talk kindly to them and pat them on the back, I tell the fitter’s and welders they are doing a fine job. And always talk to the supervisor to find out what’s really going on and what are their plans because that way i will know what I’m going to be doing.

It's a crane. It's mind numbingly easy. Anyone that says that there's anything difficult about operating a crane shouldn't be in a crane.

Amen I've been rigging for over 30 years everything from flatland refineries to hillside pipeline to offshore crew supply vessels in 20 ft seas.... Sending them offshore crane operators just blow my mind especially when they're putting down the personnel basket from 150 ft in the air.

Been rigging and signaling for an operator for almost 4 years, finally got my chance at a seat spot. I go take the practical test tomorrow. SUPER NERVOUS. Been operating a lattice boom for a little over 4 months now. But been on and off of R/Ts for almost 2 1/2 years. I’m gonna take it slow and steady, at my own pace. Just trying to get these jitter bugs out of me. Great tips buddy!👏🏼

@@marktarver4218 I’m very interested in this career path right after high school, I’m currently a senior and I’ve been doing a bit of research (haven’t done too much yet) but I’m curious what’s the best way to secure an apprenticeship as a crane operator?
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 3 года назад
@@dreamyworld4111 it may be hard fresh out of high school but I would fill out an application and bring my transcripts up to your local union hall and ask them what it will take where you are. There could be restrictions for someone under 21

I take my written and practical at the end of this month this helped me. Quick question, would you suggest in me getting my advanced rigger cert?
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 4 года назад
The more certs you have the more valuable you are. Whether or not that translates into actual dollars I can't be sure. But I always suggest more knowledge.

Any advice on here for a green operator fresh out of school and for blessed in a seat? I fully intended going the rigger route first but this offer came about and ive been laid off since July and need to put food on the table. Just wanting some advice because surely I’m not the first green operator that got thrown to the wolves. Job starts in a month what can I do to prepare?
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 3 года назад
Well if it were me I would see if the place that you will be starting for will allow you to shadow their best operator at least a few days a week until you start. I would even offer to do it on my own time (without pay) just for the experience. If i were the employer id pay you minimum wage so that you are covered on the insurance and let you shadow my best trainer. Unfortunately not everyone thinks like that but id definitely try.

I’m in florida and work with cranes rigging but I want to get in to the operating side of things , florida doesn’t have unions like other states though, is there any tips you have that you could give me on how to get to the operating side of things
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 Год назад
You are misinformed. The IUOE (International Union of Operating Engineers) is where I started right here in Florida and it was huge in making me what I am today. Just Google IUOE and your city to see which one is closest and talk to them. I've responded to many questions like this on a bunch of my videos so please look around before you decide what your next step is. If you end up needing more help after you put some effort into it look up my company and get ahold of me that way and I'll give you additional advice if it sounds like you really tried on your own.

Relocating to Davie, FL and looking for work. I posses a Class A with Hazmat and Tanker endorsements. Just finished crane school and got my NCCCO for LBT, LBC, TLL, TSS, BTF, STC, ABC, ABW and ABL. I also posses my Rigger I and Signalman. I posses a valid TWIC Card. How long before I could get a seat in FL?

If you've read any of the comments/replies you would know i advocate for the apprenticeship program through the union hall as opposed to anything to do with crane schools. The first call id make is to iuoe local 487. Id tell them your situation and work history and see if you can get on as an apprentice. Trust me when i tell you after you are a journeyman operator through the hall, your opportunities are greatly multiplied. Or you can call around to some of the mom and pop companies in the area and see if they want to take a chance on someone with a license but no experience actually running a crane. I've heard of some success that stories but they are few and far between and usually much less profitable. Just my 2 cents

How do you get experience when you already have a certification? Everyone is hiring but they all want experienced operators.
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 4 года назад
I'd go to my local union hall, not mention anything about that certification, and try to get on as an apprentice. Or you can hit up all your local crane or rigging companies and try to get on as a green hand instead of of operator and work your way up like anyone else. You'd have a leg up on other green hands cause at least the company won't have to pay to get you certified if you start picking everything up well. Dont be too hard for yourself, take an entry level position and earn the seat. Itll be worth it and if you're good, it won't take very long.
