Yeah, I think he actually defends his team and players quite well, hence why he gets quite annoyed and defensive to reporters. I’ve never really heard any complaints about him from players who played under him.

I don’t know where this guy got this about torts. Most of his players love playing for him. There have been numerous interviews with former players who give torts credit. I think the media has more to do with his bad rep than the players.

There’s a difference between being a tough coach and an A-hole. Tortsy is a tough coach. Babcock is an a-hole

Tort's biggest fault is that he is very good at sensing the hidden agenda. SO often reporters try to pit one against the other, and he hates that. and he will call it. They also ask very stupid questions..

Looking it up, I see he finally reversed his stance on that, sort of. He seems to still think he should be making the final call on what a player will be allowed to do though. "I would hope that if one of my players wanted to protest during the anthem, he would bring it to me and we would talk about it, tell me his thoughts and what he wanted to do." You know, I’ve actually always got a kick out of Tortorella. A lot of sports reporters ask dumb questions (yeah, as an Oilers fan, we have to deal with Mark Spector). So, I can totally get why Torts gets annoyed with them. I personally never really have heard of any issues with Torts and any of his players, and from what I gather, most enjoy(ed) him as a coach and respected him. As for the rest, yeah they are/were pretty terrible all around coaches.

First off, it was a WORLD TOURNAMENT, not an NHL game like you misrepresented it as. These kids and coaches are representing their country, not the Columbus Blue Jackets. World games, the World Cup, the Olympics etc are a time for coming together and having fun, a time for heeling and remembering the good. Did you know that Johns son Nick is a member in the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment? Did you know at the time of the tournament that John was coaching that Nick was over seas? Yeah if my son was in the military in harms way while coaching in a WORLD TOURNAMENT I would tell the players on my team that "if you sit on the bench during the anthem you will sit during the game". Did you also know that Torts never told them they couldn't talk to the media or voice their concerns or opinions on what was going on. He never tried to stop their freedom of speech. Did you know that Seth Jones (the black player you're talking about) when goated by the media about the whole situation said "I'm just here to play hockey" and "I think it's fair" that Torts made that rule. He cares about the anthem, and regardless of your opinion he has skin in the game. People should think before the comment or "protest" things they don't understand. When you say "police brutality"? You mean when the media and a portion of the population ASSume the police were wrong and being racist because race is all they think about and play on 24/7 without knowing all the facts? Yeah and then when all the evidence comes out proving them wrong in 90% of these cases they bury the story when it doesn't go their way, or they straight up lie. I watched it with the Kyle Rittenhouse case. Watched the entire trial, and so did the media, but they call him a racist murderer when all he did was defend himself against 3 WHITE men including a pedo. Pretty sure this was 2016 and the "protests" were mostly about the Michael Brown case. Well turns out Michael not only assaulted and stole from the poor little store owner but then not only disobeyed police orders he tried to physically attack the cop and take his gun. Oh look, seems Mr. Brown was shot in the chest being as it's super easy to tell the difference between an entrance wound and an exit wound. There were lots of protests getting snuffed out in most recent Men's World Cup. Iran in particular made gestures on the field and statements in the press. Then there was also the US team in the women's World Cup who also had their own kneelings during the anthem. And of course, long before that is the very famous photo with Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists instead of covering their heart while on the podium to receive gold and bronze medals as the American anthem played. Sports and politics are inseparable. You want to speak about how its all about unity. Was the Miracle on Ice about the unity of America vs Russia? Or did that turn into a large symbol of America's superiority over its bitter political rival in Russia? This isn't Barney & Friends. But you can also read Tortorella's quote on his backpedal a few years later and its clear that his 'threat' didn't apply to just games at international stages, that he "learned over the years" and his perspective on it has changed. He has a son in the military who's MOS is pretty dangerous. His son has had to bury friends killed in combat. Tort's made a rule for players who play on his team. He's a dangerously overrated hockey coach. The Red Wings winning the cup in 08 had nothing to do with his coaching, but losing the finals the next year had everything to do with his coaching.

As a Red Wings fan, Im with ya Leafs fans. Babcock is the most overrated piece of shit of all time. Yay he coached a stacked team to an olympic gold medal. Yay he coached a stacked Red Wings team to a Stanley Cup, and then choked 2 games in 2009. Mike Babcock is the reason why Chris Osgood didn't win a 4th cup, 3rd as a starter, and isn't in the hall of fame. Babcock is 1 and 4 all time in Stanley Cup Finals clinching games. 1 and 4. 5 times he's played a game that could have clinched the Stanley Cup, 1 with Anahiem in 03, 2 with Detroit in both 08 and 09. Real legend there... and he's 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7's also. He played too conservatively, would try and score a few goals and then just sit back like it's a soccer game and then blow a lead, or just never be aggressive enough early in games when it was 0-0. He absofuckinglutely will be in the Hall of Fame unfortunately... you would assume, he's ironically beloved by some but yeah, Detroit and Toronto fans and probably Anaheim fans too despise him for choking constantly. Maybe since the HOF is in Toronto yall can petition to keep him out, and we'll drive 3 hours north to help? :)

He won 4 Cups in the 60s including their last. He built the original Sabres that went to the cup final. Some guys didn't love Punch, but I would not pin the Leafs not winning a cup since on him. He traded Mahovlich to get Norm Ullman and Paul Henderson, both performed great in Toronto. The Leafs were in a rebuild and well what do you know before he could continue his work they fired him. Considering how he built the original Sabres would have been nice, also not getting Ballard as owner.

I didn’t think too much of him during his playing days but I really like the guy now. Seems a lot more humble than I assumed he was during his playing days.

I sat that season in an very empty Ball Arena. Avs definitely have come a long way, because of Bednar. Roy will never be given an opportunity to coach again in my opinion.

One of Roy's problems with Duchene was a game where Duchene scored his 100th goal or something while trailing by 4 or 5 goals and was celebrating like he won it in overtime

Therrien was a dirty coach. His tactics included slashing knees, slashing knees, and slashing knees. Guy also had a love affair for undersized forwards with marginal skills, but a wealth of knowledge in the cheap shot department.

Actually he was a very good coach at one time - until he won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers - his ego went off the hook - and was just an antagonist ever after
