Thank you for explaining the real differences between the two sensor types that are more understandable when illustrating.

Having only dealt with cadence sensors on a hub drive bike before I had been curious about the difference between it and a torque sensor bike. And yes, I am one of those that have had the bike get out from under me when I was first learning how to properly use the e-bike. I also admit if I ride to work stocking groceries at work (can’t say their name but they’re based out of Salisbury) the bike and I share the load on getting us there but going home at night I’m at an age where I’m so exhausted I happily let the bike do the work for 80% of it and use the throttle quite a bit. But I think that’s what drew me to e-bikes in the first place, there is no set way that you have to ride, you can tailor the use of the bike to your own specific needs. Heard you brake a little when that deer was around, up here in the mountains they’re bad to just hop down the slope right in front of you car truck or bike. Great video!

Thanks for watching Randy. We always keep an eye on the deer as they are quite numerous around here. Typically we get 6 to 10 in the backyard every day. I think you pretty much summed it up when you said you can tailor them to what you need. And no matter what type of sensor, you can always make it work best for you. Enjoy your evening.

I'm definitely in the torque sensor, and no-throttle camp. I have a Bafang mid-drive on my recumbent trike, but only use it for recovery rides. With the higher power(750watt) & cadence sensor, it's way too easy for me, even when I'm not ghost-pedaling.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking Месяц назад
Thanks for watching Joe. You may want to go into your Bafang mid drive with a speed app and a programming cable. I actually have the most natural feel from that. The exception would be from a Bosch and Shimano torque sensor. They do outshine anything on the direct to consumer. Enjoy your evening.

Good vid Blaine. I like to rip all of em like a regular bike, with my own leg torque. Some bikes operate just a bit differently and sometimes need setting adjustments, like using throttle only on bikes that are mph limited/PAS
@southernebiking
@southernebiking Месяц назад
Thanks for watching. I rarely if ever use the throttle myself, so I get it. Enjoy your evening.

There's another scheme. There's KT torque simulation or similar. Lectric hints of this. This works like cadence, but instead of fixed speed levels, it uses power levels. I like that better.
@Altema22
@Altema22 Месяц назад
Ah yes, it's much more natural than basic cadence systems. Rad does it the same way, and I had to do a lot of programming to mimic the way Lectric and Rad does it when I switched to a PhaseRunner controller.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking Месяц назад
The BBS02 to do a very similar deal. You have to go in with the speed app and reprogram, but you can have it setting the power that you get at each level. Of course, 20% power in first gear is much different than 20% power in 10th gear. So far the most natural that I have seen would be the boshe and shimano Middrive’s. But you’re not talking about direct to consumer prices on those. Lol thanks much for watching.

@@southernebiking Yeah, I had to trash the stock electronics on my Ancheer "mountain" bike and install a KT22 controller and KT LCD3 display, but it was well worth it.

They do have a few bikes out they have a mapping switch that you can flip between them now. This was something that I said last year I thought would be coming out soon. I only know if I believe two right now. Thanks much for watching Terry.

By far in my view the most natural ride is a torque sensor combined with a continues gearing system (cvt) I use a riese & muller with a bosch cx motor and enviolo automatiq gear system. Its like riding a single speed have not changed gears in 13000+ km. Just peddle and go. You set the peddle speed you like (i have it on 65) and set the bosch to one of its assist levels and the system will take care of the rest. Its very fast of the line compared to others if you want because you never have to change gears its always in the correct one and you can be very relaxed if you want. Smooth ride feels very natural except it feels like you are 20 again and never have headwind.

Thank you for watching. We definitely appreciate it. The Bosch motors along with a shimano are absolutely the most natural feeling, Drive systems. The automatic shifting, I would say, comes under the category of modern cycling as there are some regular bikes that have that same system. So I’m not sure that would be limited to just E bikes. I actually do not feel like I’m riding if I’m not shifting gears. Lol. Even on these hub drive bikes that most people never shift on, I’m constantly shifting to be in the most effective gear. Again, thank you much for watching. We are humbled that someone from what is probably the bicycle capital of the world is watching our little channel. So thank you much friend.

@@southernebiking No problem always fun to see how the rest of the world is doing on bicycle issue and also seeing a return to a better balance with cars. The reason why the enviolo is used less is i guess price and also it takes a little more energy its about 10% less efficient than a well setup/clean chain drive. Ebikes are easier to offset that. For sure going 'full' automatic is not for everyone but i would advice people who really want a nice drive to try 2 highend systems like the enviolo automatiq and a rohloff 14e (best manual shift) to see what is possible and if its for you or not. Do keep in mind that on Bosch at least these 2 systems are controlled by the bosh computer making the 'auto' mode of the motor work directly with the gearing system that makes it even smoother. I do also expect that these types of systems will evolve more and more like they now add ABS breaking. The reason is like with most in life once things get under software control they can do more. Keep riding.

Which one I prefer depends on the riding environment. My bike has both, and they can be switched without making physical changes. I can get a real good workout with either, but my cadence setup is not like any of the ones covered here. A lot of current bikes use the cadence sensor as a pedal-activated cruise control, and I really dislike that. Of course, I have also ridden bikes where torque sensor is awful... not giving much in return, then when you pedal a little harder it gives too much. I guess their setup is just non-linear, and I would expect better from Trek.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking Месяц назад
I said last year I was hoping that we would get bikes with a mapping switch to flip between a cadence and the torque sensor. There have been a couple of bikes that this has happened on. I would be curious what type of motor is in your trek. The best ones for feeling natural that I have seen would be the Bosch and Shimano. I think the next would be my bbso2. Even though it is a cadence sensor, it has been turned to give a percentage of power on the given pedal assist. Of course, 15% in first gear is much different than 15% in 10th gear. So using the gearing certainly is what brings that alive. Now with this being said, that does not mean that some thing like the biktrix is not a good sensor. It works perfectly well for what we are using that bike for and I am happy with it. But it would certainly not be my chosen system to use off-road. Which bike are you referring to when you have both available on the display? Thanks much for watching.

I think I would like to try a torque sensor, I wonder if it would have worked better for me when i switch over from acoustic to electric. It would have felt a lot more natural than cadence ever could.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking Месяц назад
You can use the gearing to get the natural feel with the cadence sensor. I that’s why when you see me riding a hub drive with a cadence sensor you’ll see me switching gears quite often. A lot of people missed that. I have found on a lot of the bikes with a torque sensor, Everything is set to high. It takes away the natural feel some. Probably the most natural that I have ridden would be the BBS02 Middrive. Even though it is a cadence sensor, you can set the settings to where you’re only getting a percentage of the power. Of course, I am not counting Middrive motors like the Shimano or Bosch. But those are in a different ballgame. Thanks for watching Pedro.
@dutchbicyclerides-ss1ko
@dutchbicyclerides-ss1ko Месяц назад
try a torgue system combined with a cvt gear system like the enviolo automatiq. No gears to switch and no trottle to operate just peddle and go. The smallest difference between acoustic and ebike for me the 'support' setting is more 'how much younger do you want to feel' setting. I use a Reise&Muller ebike and a Koga normal bicycle.
