@@Alewifes_Husband Absolutely. I'll add, although it pains me to do it, that Ike Turner also deserves a big chunk of the credit for what came to be known as Rock & Roll. I would say that Sister Rosetta Tharp brought the gospel tradition + guitar, Ike Turner brought the R&B element + guitar and Little Richard brought it all + flamboyance in a way that was so far ahead of his time it's mind-blowing.

There’s no language in my lungs or air in my lungs to even respond to such a Ludacris comment. When you trace music back it goes back to black man blues and Irish music in Ireland. This was taped towards the end of Sister Tharp's long career. She was big in the 1930's & 1940's, especially in gospel music. Her style might be termed "Proto-Rock", but some might say, that it was Rock. A big innovator on guitar, she influenced many early rockers, including Elvis & Carl Perkins. Rock & Roll and guitar playing are most often thought of as male things, but two of Rock's biggest guitar influences were women. Sister Rosetta Tharp and Mother Maybelle Carter.

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 A pretty broad range of Jazz and Blues artists. From it's origins in the south through the years, to cities, like Chicago, where new sounds created various offshoots throughout the decades. As far as artists, we covered quite a few Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, lots of others, but those are the ones I remember offhand, because they were my favorites. I guess there was only so much time in class, he couldn't really cover everybody.

I never think of her as the female B.B. King or any other electric blues player. To me she's the female Sister Rosetta Tharp. Of course I'm trying to be a bit humorous, but when we explore her entire career we see how unique among guitarist and blues and gospel singers she was. No way will I diminish the importance of Blues Boy King. He's as unique in his own playing and singing!
@salishseaartsfoundation
@salishseaartsfoundation 2 года назад
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 She may not appear as a jazz player at first glance, but jazz and the blues, and in Sister's case gospel, all descend from the same ancestor. As someone with a formal background in jazz I think any other jazz musician has a deep respect for the blues. R&B and gospel. I wouldn't expect a semester long overview of jazz to include Sister Rosetta Tharp but a decent look at jazz would always have a discussion about the importance of it's closely related forms of American music. I'm writing this with all due respect

She was touring Europe. There had been a blues revival in America form the late 50s but it was the preserve of folk musicians and music antiquarians. In Britain and around Europe, there was a huge blues revival that was much broader. Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker etc. came over, toured clubs, recorded albums etc. Bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Yardbirds, Them (Van Morrison), Cream etc. idolised these guys. Guys who’d retired in the 1940s as jazz and crooners took over from blues came out of retirement and made some decent money at last.

Sadly, it was because the Jim Crow laws kept these artists from being able to perform in so many places. Even Sammy Davis Jr was turned away from a casino, when he was supposed to perform with the rest of the Rat Pack. Sinatra told the club owner, "If he doesn't come in, we don't come in." So no surprise that many black, Jazz and Blues artists couldn't get work.

Absolutely 1964-- firstly, that axe she was pickin' on was a 1963 Gibson SG Custom 3-humbucker **MONSTER** with all the knobs, switches, bells, & whistles that Gibson could pack in-- And why were American blues artists suddenly on British radar? Because The Beatles had listed them as influences! As for video quality, the Brits were a tad behind in their 'mobile' video recording technology-- although color cameras were available in 1961, they were too bulky & cumbersome to lug about; but B&W cameras were getting smaller, and could be used for mobile recording [this was done at a train station, in case you couldn't tell!!] -- Blessed Be, & Peace!!

This was one of my first Female Friday suggestions.!! Sister be rockin' that SG!! Big Mama Thornton, "Ball & Chain". I know you heard Janis do it, but Big Mama wrote it. EDIT: The song "Hound Dog" was written specifically for "Big Mama" Thornton by the same songwriters (Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller) who wrote "Jail House Rock" (Elvis), "Stamd By Me" (Ben E. King), "Love Potion Number 9" (The Clovers, The Searchers and The Coasters had hits with LP#9) as well as dozens of other massively popular songs from the early 50s through the late 60s. The Coasters did a bunch of Leiber & Stoller songs.

Y'all picked a good song to start with - I'd also suggest "This Train", "Strange Things Happening Everyday", "Rock Me" , "Down By The Riverside", "Up Above My Head", "Old Time Religion" and, as a member of the Who Dat Nation myself, I am particularly fond of her version of "When the Saints Go Marchin' In". 1964. Early Beatles on TV were black & white at the same time. Mid-60s more shows in color started. In the ‘70s new shows were in color. Sister Rosetta was famous for her voice, personality, adventures, and of course for taking her electric guitar to church with her. She’s obviously American, but I bought one of her records when I was in Scotland because they weren’t easy to find in Texas. She’s in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
