After touring the overpriced and crowded Quintana Roo, I went to a better state. The Yucatan.
I discovered that cenotes look amazing because they don't exist in other parts of the world.
The cenotes in Quintana Roo are the most visited but they are not great. I'll explain what I mean.
You can either book an organized all-day tour which will cost your over 1,200 pesos which is $63 dollars or you can visit cenotes a la carte like I do in this video from Merida to Homun. Jump to the time marker indicated in the description for a local guide.
The following part shows several cenotes in Homun, a town one hour from Merida. Afterwards, I'll show you cenote Crystalina just south of Playa del Carmen.
30 seconds:
My a la carte tour in Homun was excellent and it cost me 425 pesos (that's 24 dollars) and it's 42% of the full-day tour price. I was able to complete it in 5 hours from Merida and back. Here's the breakdown:
Colectivo van round-trip 60 pesos
Motorbike driver 200 pesos
3 Cenotes = 165
TOTAL = 425 pesos
The cenotes near Tulum and Playa del Carmen are 4 times more expensive! Around 200 pesos and the water in those is unfortunately more dirty because many more tourists go there. You can check by seeing the reviews on google maps. They are sadly in bad condition.
The Yucatan has more cenotes and you can use Merida as your base point when touring them. They have cleaner waters and smaller crowds. If you like big crowds, go on a group tour and pay over 1200 pesos during the weekend or get a colectivo from Merida's centro by typing "colectivo + town name" on google maps.
Upon arrival, you can ask for a motorbike guide to take you to the cenotes and you will play less than half the price.
Now subscribe to my channel to hear honest travel opinions and in my next video I'll tell you about Valladolid and its giant cenote. Safe travel stranger!
