Engines consuming Oil or Coolant is NOT normal. Not sure why people are trying to justify this.

Let me explain. Emission driven low friction/tension piston rings lead to this. Wont break, will eat oil. The piston simply does not scrape the oil on the cyl walls due to emission regulations and lead to increased oil consumption. My 300k km m50 engine eats next to nothing doing 25 psi , was doing this before with stock internals and also with rebuilt forged internals. B48 and 58s I had on my hands consume oil BUT, only if you get them hot. In 6000km it ate one liter but autobahn and track usage with 0w30.

Appreciate you validating this issue. I see a lot of mixed opinions on the forums. I've been tracking my oil consumption for almost a year and it showed barely any change from 0w-20 to 5w-30. Hopefully Toyota or BMW will release a real TSB soon

A 2021 Supra came in with the same oil consumption issue. Found out the piston ring gaps weren’t at the correct spec causing oil consumption. Newer pistons with rings at the correct gap solved the issue.

How bad is it for the engine if you keep driving it with this issue? Just topping off every time.
@kern417
@kern417 2 года назад
It really just depends. If it's consumed due to ring up and usually it just gets worse and worse. The same way you want to use a catch can to filter out oil from going into your intake, you don't want excess oil blowing past the piston rings because it can hinder performance. Basically the car can manage it but you won't be 100%.

I also have a 2021 m340i. Have to add 1 to 2 quarts in between services of 15,000 KMs. The investigative track I’m on right now is following the start of a whirring sound from the engine at about 57,000 KMs. I’ve been monitoring oil pressure and notice once the oil is at operating temp, I’m seeing oil pressure hit 100-110 psi which I don’t think is normal. Would have assumed it would be under 80. This high psi could explain oil consumption I’m seeing coupled with the 0W20 oil used.

I have a 21’ m340i. At 5k I did an oil change then did a road trip in mid September from nyc down to key west, after I was in key west a few days the check oil light came on, it took about a half quart of liqui moli 6600 0w-20, on the drive back no more oil level issues and I changed the oil at about 3k using the same liqui moli blend. I mean I drive my X5 aggressively but that doesn't mean it was designed for it. These are commuter cars that we rip into to make them more fun.
@xxz1434
@xxz1434 2 года назад
@@kern417 Nice! in Europe all the commuter and police vehicles are BMWs with 2.0/3.0 diesels and the hybrid 2.0s are also getting more popular, something like an X3 M40i or X3 M are not considered to be soccer mom vehicles here, even the wealthier folk go for the diesels/hybrids even if they could afford the running costs. So its interesting to see in America, something with a B58 is considered average. Most people here buy something regular and then have an M3 or something for fun or special occasions
@kern417
@kern417 2 года назад
It's because the b58 is mid-tier. A lot of our cars don't even come with diesel or 4 cylinder options because they don't sell. But even in an M, the platform was designed for one purpose and then the M division beefed it up with other components. Not really a ground up design focused on performance.
@betahours9416
@betahours9416 3 месяца назад
Unless there is an issue with the PCV system(because the lack of ported vacuum); the oil disappearing is very simple. On short driving periods where the engine is not fully heated to operating temp; fuel makes it away around the rings. When fuel sits in your oil and is heated in the crankcase it turn to steam, removing oil with it. Long story story; heat your engine to full operating temp. Thinner oils just mean less oil pressure and less heat soak. Those engines are new; with even cylinder contribution the engine should be running fairly cool……

@TheNickCrank
@TheNickCrank 2 года назад
just a heads up but that wasnt a tsb that you showed, it was a tech tip and has nothing to do with an actual tsb. you also added a larger turbo which im sure has the adverse reaction of more boost pressure which equals more blowby. turbo engines driven hard will see oil consumption and it doesnt matter who built the engine. might be beneficial to check if you have the correct oil feed and drain for the oil pressure you have to make sure the turbo isnt adding into the consumption issue.
@kern417

A TSB is a tech tip. All it says is to top off oil and interview the owner to relay that information to corporate so they can maintain statistics. My car has not burned any oil in almost 5 years of ownership. Again watch the video. This is an issue that primarily affects 6port TU engines. There are countless gen 1 B58s pushing 600+ HP with no excessive oil consumption. Stop making excuses for OEMs.

@@kern417 yeah man youre right, i have no clue what im talking about. been a master tech at toyota for 4 years and a tech there since 2014. but if anyone wants to listen to what im saying heres a few real tips. if the vehicle returns within 1500 miles after the first top off we have to make a tas case or at least thats what our fts requires us to do. within certain mileage, code history, and driving history, you may get a goodwill or free engine rebuild after the tas case and oc test is done. 1500+ miles between top offs is normal for all manufacturers with oil specifications going thinner and thinner. thicker oil and upper induction cleaning can help with oil consumption. we can view your vehicles driving history with techstream so take that as you will.
