79 Hilux 4X4-Original Owner. Today I noticed oil on the inside of my tire and suspected that my seal had failed. Quickly found your video. This will be a challenge but I think I'm going to try. Your wonderful videos have inspired me with confidence. Thank you.
Did the whole work ! But someone (me) ; ) didn't put grease to cover everything and the bronce bushing went dry on grease! Thanks to your video we figuered out what was missing! Great editing it too me a while to do all the cleaning jeje! No more noise and no more leaks! Thank you again! Bill
Thank you so much for posting these videos... I used your 8274 and Toyota knuckle rebuild videos this weekend. It was much easier having your videos as a reference. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. Awesome detail. Just bought my first landcruiser 1985 Troopy and need to work on front hubs.should be good to go soon. Cheers Paul.(Brisbane Australia)
@Myffrree 1. following the factory manual 2. all torque requirements are mandatory 3. a good quality wheel bearing grease is good for both hub and knuckle. thanks for watching!
Nice video! I'm glad to see that western man could do repair their cars. They said that western man could only fill the tank with the gasoline. Good job!!!
Try 4wheelauto in edmonton alberta canada for a kit to do your rebuild. I suggest rebuilding the whole knuckle when in there with bearings and races, seals etc. Buy the toyota factory maint manual as well, thanks for watching!
Amazing detail, i wish they had more people like you. Good job man. Im on my second fj.... First a 60. Now on to a lux model. Fj62 ..lol😉 just bought a 1989 fj62 with 139xxx foe $1500 my previous fj ,i bought for $2200.ill show you some fotos.
If you have a clicking you might have buggered cv joints, check them well when you are in there and replace them if you have lots of kms - they wear out.
Thanks heaps for the video there all really great, I just have a question before I start this job myself. Whats your method fer determining the bearing tightness, ie the spring scale tool bit? Thanks,
Thanks for sharing this helpful video!!! I am about to rebuild my front swivel hubs on my '91 hilux and I was wondering whether I should use my RTV gasket sealant on the cone washers? Also should lube the inside of the manual hubs just before i assemble them? Cheers :)
good video. need to do mine on my bj60. BTW, two things you should mention. To restore some of the balls rough surface to some what smooth surface, clean with metal with degreaser. Sand with medium grit sand paper. Then apply a layer of jbweld over the surface and let it set. Sand to a smooth finish. Second, dont loose the keepers, impossible to find. Lastly, would been nice if you had the time to paint the parts :)
Hey Ishobie, Firstly thanks for the vids, they have been very helpful and full of good info! I've just finished rebuilding mine and I've run into a bit of a problem. Took it out for a spin to bed the new brakes and such, thought I'd lock the hubs to make sure that it all worked. It appears at 30km/h+ i have a rattle. No issues whatsoever in 2H with unlocked hubs , but the second the hubs are locked though i get a rattle. Normally I'd think bearings, but i just rebuilt them. Any thoughts?
Great vid mate could you tell me the torque settings on the king pin bolts and axle flange bolts cheers man. I noticed that you dont run the brake backing plate.
Hi Your video has helped plenty so far, thanks very much. I saw you use a tension gauge ( at 4:57 of this video ) to measure the pre-load of the hub rotation, same as in your other video for the rear hub. What tension should they be for the front and rear hub respectively? I don't seem to find the info in the service manual. Thanks in anticipation
Thanks for this and the other vids. Very similar to the Patrol. If you don't run into other issues, you can do them in a day. If you got water getting in, as I did, you may need to do a bit more cleaning. My lower King Pins were a mess as was the lower inner knuckle housing. A good reason to pull a bolt and check for water after some deep water work. I wire wheeled all of mine and paint with high temp oil and grease paint. Then everything got a good coating of grease. I did not fill the knuckle housing with grease as now the Nissan does not recommend it. I did use moly grease on the birf (CV). It looked like you used normal grease there. Is that correct? Wish I had seen your birf tricks vid before I cleaned it and repacked it. I renewed everything from the inner axle seal out to the outer wheel bearing. It can also be a bit of a pain getting the circle clip on at the end after everything is new and freshly greased. I had to work the stub axles in and out for a bit until I could displace the grease enough. Caliper slides have the same issue with water getting in and causing them to seize.
lshobie: Awesome videos, I've done the wheel hubs on my FJ60 using your tut and worked perfect. Now to fix my leaking knuckle seal. Question for you: are you concerned about aligning your knuckles with the axle housing? Marlin advertises an (expensive) tool to help with alignment, but in your experience, is this even necessary? Thanks!
Great tutorials, you really seem to know land cruisers well! Mine is a 1990 LJ70 series, planning to do the knuckle along with the brake pads, can you please guide me as of what new parts im gonna need? Are there any rebuild kits with everything included? Im asking because here in Cyprus is really difficult to find parts for this model and probably i'll have to order them from a website. Keep on posting such useful videos!
@darthvincor I forget the name - it is a synthetic grease, repels water much better but 14 bucks a tube! Thought I would try it out this time to see how it works. Thanks for watching!
my 94 toy pickup.4x4 is pulling to the left.. i have had it lined up 3 times evertime i found something wore out..its good now but still pulls to the left... u think i need to change everything like u did.. or mabe something else.. is is a big help if so great vid..
Can you loctite(thread locker ) the kingpin (top and bottom bearings) retaining bolts? I just noticed mine have loosened themselves ? Do you use different grease between the kingpin bearings , cv joint and wheel bearings?
What advise would you give to a newbie 1) which is the most critical step in both dimantling and rebuilt 2) when rebuilting, how critical are those torque settings, would you recommend to go get myself proper torque wrenches 3) I was told to use high temp bearing grease for the wheel bearing, would I use it on all the bearings in the system, or just the wheel bearing. Also would there be any compatibility problem when they are in contact with the Molly Grease for the swival knuckle
I noticed you didn't used a knuckle centering gauge to set the shims for your knuckle bearings, wouldn't that cause some vibrations when driving or if you're using factory shims in the same spot with new bearings and races the offset should be identical? any thoughts on that would be helpful as its one expensive SST.
By any chance do you have Toyota Land Cruiser front Knuckle tutorial #1 and what was it about ? Would like to see the dismounting of it. Recently i rebuild it and it has a very loud noise or cliking from the right front side. I have a FJ 80 1992 ! You sure did a great job on #2! Congrats!
does it have coil springs or leafs? my 92 land cruiser had the same problem and i had to change the contorl arm bushings because the ones on the left side got damaged when i hit a kerb
