The port injection allows fuel flow over the intake valves to remove carbon, it’s also makes better low rpm torque using port vs direct. The other thing it allows is for the engine to go through a direct injection self cleaning cycle during hot idle. The direct injectors actually have the ability to blow the carbon off of their tips and sides while the engine runs on the port injectors. Genius system.

I have this engine in my 2020 Rav 4 Hybrid. Glad he explained why the car goes from super quiet to a little shake and some rumbling. Just means it went from port to direct injected. Your channel is awesome! Keep up the great work.

I'm one of those guys who will start there car and let the engine warm for a minute or so before driving off. have just purchased my first Hybrid ( Rav4 XSE , due in Jan23) in my mind ... I struggle with the fact that you can't warm the engine in the morning before heading off,just push a button but watching you and your tuition on this motor, cooling system will warm everything up before engine does tick over and the electronic oil pumps wow. very informative videos and thanks. cheers New Zealand 🇳🇿

good video on the engine. Took it first long trip 2000 mile. At 70MPH I consistently got 40 MPG. Works for me.

When you look at how the Atkinson cycle works you can see the advantage of variable intake valve timing. I own a 2018 Camry and have been amazed by the power and efficiency of this engine. Toyota has a recall now for the low pressure fuel pump although I have noticed no problem.

I left the dealer world in 2017. Before then I had been a 24 year Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician, and I own 4 Toyota vehicles with the newest being a 2011 Tacoma TRD off road double cab. Love my old '00 Camry, 02 ES300, and our 03 RX300. Have been thinking 2015 would be the latest Toyotas I would want to own... but maybe we will buy a newer one now!

An EGR that picks up the exhaust post cat is an excellent idea. Never heard of that being the case before.

Another informative video. I learned something new today. Thank you!

Heated thermostat can be used during warming phase as described but it also allows much reduced HP load for coolant flow. With the coolant flow valves and variable speed electric water pump there is no need for thermostat to have any temp control function other than speeding initial engine warm up. Once engine reaches temp the water pump speed becomes the main control of heat energy rejection. Low load creates low heat and low pump speed is all that is needed. The pump can run and move all the coolant needed with only 250-300 mA, maybe less. The mechanical water pumps oversupplied greatly and thermostat would reduce opening to keep coolant temp higher. Pushing water through the reduced opening takes fuel for that extra work.

Subscribed! I remember reading an article 40+ years ago that it took x horsepower to move x gallons of oil per minute through an engine. The article was about the tiny oil filters that were being put on then current engines. The writer bet some of the oil was being bypassed because he doubted the paper media could stand such a high flow.

Thanks. After watching your video I decided to check out my engine on my new Rav4 hybrid. I noticed oil splatter on the engine cover. Thats very odd being a new car that has never been serviced before. Turns out the oil filler cap was loose!! I checked the oil level and it was still full. I tightened the cap up and cleaned up any oil I could reach that had dripped down. Your video saved me from a potentially bad situation that could have gotten much worse.

Wow, everything I wanted to know about this engine all in one video. I just purchased a new 2021 Sienna hybrid and I was trying the find out as much info as I could. I wondered if it was a direct-injected motor and to find out that it is a dual-injected version had me jumping for joy as I know all about carbon buildup with the DI motors. Thanks once again for all your help and info. I have always been a DIY person with all of my cars and wanted to start off doing things the right way with this newer technology.

2018 Camry hybrid with almost 185k miles. I've been using only Ultra platinum Penzoil 5W30 on my car every 5k miles and so far absolutely zero issues or oil burning with my engine . Still drives like day 1 The only thing wear out was the driver side shock at around 175k miles

Hi AMD, you are excellent at making the extremely complicated explanations simple. After having watched your channel over the past 3 years I purchased the same exact car(2023CamryHybridXSE)as you except in silver,without the black top.I traded in my 2017 Audi A8l 3.0 w/ 32k miles. I had previously owned over 20+ years only BMW’s.,from a 2006 750li ,to my last a 2015 X4. I truly loved the technology of the German cars, but found them to be finicky and problematic (not all of them). What I felt was that the technology was forced into the car because of trying to always one up the competition, either in the engineering and or entertainment/safety. Which brings me to this video and how you describe the Toyota 2.5 and the painstakingly thought out process they took to design this motor. I have always been a big Toyota fan from my very early 20’s . My first one I owned was a 1977 white Corolla,then 1979 Celica hatchback. The last Toyota I owned till now was a 1985 Toyota Celica ST that my brother bought brand new. He gave me the car with 150k miles, which I took to 210K , and sold with the original clutch and NEVER 1 issue. I went to the Toyota dealer this past Dec , and when I drove the 2023 Camry Hybrid I was blown away impressed(your descriptions were spot on). I really like the looks, and even acceleration was good , making me impressed enough to buy it. I would just like to thank you and your wife for making the channel and staying with it. I do actually have a question on the use of the paddle shifters. If I use them to downshift in trying to slow the car (charging/save on the brakes) am I putting a lot on strain, or doing damage to the transmission? An why do I see in certain blogs that they say the brakes last a lot longer on this particular hybrid? Thank you for sharing your talents . God Bless you and your family. 🙏Eddie S

In regards to the EGR cooler. My coworker has a '15 Prius C and the EGR is fed post-cat. She uses her vehicle to commute 45 mins on the highway each way to go to and from work. Car has 120k on it and is serviced at the dealer. She was experiencing rattling and loss of power under low load (think stop and go traffic), every once in a while when the car would start up (Prius death rattle), and when the ICE would turn on after switching between electric and mixed us (middle of the eco bar). She went to 2 dealerships and 1 independent shop and they all told her nothing was wrong with her car because there was no codes stored or pending and they couldn't reproduce the issue. I called a 4th shop that are Toyota specialists and they told me they wouldn't be able to diagnose it unless it threw a code or had one stored or reproduced the issue while a scan tool was hooked up to the OBDII port. I contacted my buddy who owns an independent shop and I told him what it probably was, but to also run some other diagnostics just to rule out a bad coil, etc. Well, her EGR cooler was clogged solid. Once it was replaced, it runs fine. The passages are too small on the EGR cooler as designed. This EGR will clog, it 's just a matter of time. The only improvement that I see is that there is now a separate plenum that feeds the exhaust gas into the head / intake manifold.

They did have a recall on the fuel pump in the gas tank. I had mine replaced. They did make the service easy.

110 German car owner disliked this video. But anyways, I absolutely love this video series! What a ingenious fix for the direct injection issues. They even engineered an air oil separator so you don’t need to get a catch can. Because it also has port injection, you can add fuel additives to help keep your valves clean. Genius!

Thanks for this, as a new owner of 2021 rav4, now I know why my engine is loud during cold start then suddenly silenced.

I will stick with my 1owner, accident free, dealer maintaned, quiet, simple and reliable 3.6 l 2011 Avalon 63,000 miles. At 70 I'm not upgrading to something I can't work on. Yes I changed the transmission fluid and coolant per your videos but my mechanic can do the rear spark plugs, water pump when that day comes. Brakes n rotors no problem. I drive maybe 6-8,000 miles a year, 1 eye on the rear view mirror and 1 on the road for the compulsive cell phone users. REGULAR GAS and a big smile going down the road ! Thanks for all your honest and straight up videos.

I can't say enough about my purchase of a 2023 Lexus NX250 which has this 2.5L. This is my first Toyota/Lexus product as my previous purchases were other Japanese brands as I only buy Japanese. Nice to hear that this engine is so advanced and well thought through. Great video, really enjoy watching you.

Coming from a 2010 accord 4 cylinder where I averaged 26-27 combined mpg. My recently purchased 2020 Camry SE gets about 34-35 mpg with my same driving habits. It has more power and torque than the accord and is quieter. I’m already impressed!

I am totally amazed at my 2.5 Dynamic Force engine in my 2020 Camry LE (8,350 total miles) I recently took a 445 mile trip that put my car through just about all the scenarios a car could face including, freeway, hills, mountains, long gradual inclines, long gradual declines, 78 miles of winding uphill, downhill, sharp turns, not so sharp turns, manually downshifting, manually upshifting, and driving around a small coastal California town of Fort Bragg for two days. After I came back home I filled up the tank to check for the first time my gas milage turned out to be...an amazing "35.8 miles per gallon." I had to redo the numbers on my calculator to double check...445 miles divided by 12.4 gallons of gas. I am totally amazed! And all these miles were not "easy interstate miles"...only about 125, or so. My car performed better than I anticipated and this engine...totally amazed me! The car is rated for 39 MPG (freeway) on the window sticker. It looks like it would do even better! Totally amazing!

I learned something today. All the noise I hear when I start my Camry for the first 30 seconds or so is the direct injection system and not the VVT system. It smooths out and gets quieter after that. Thank you and God bless!

I heard that Toyota used their own small invention which is tumble method to efficiently mix fuel and air ration, upon entering the cylinders. It is a method of changing angle of entry and instead of traditional swirling around, mixture enters directly and swirl sideways.

On the engine oil, the owners manual for the Australian A25A-FKS states that it can run 0w16, 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 reliably and can even handle 10w30. I would posit that CAFE/EPA make it so stringent that the auto mfg has to recommend the thinnest oil to meet the EPA MPG requirements at the detriment to the rotating assembly. You make it a point to talk about how smart Toyota engineers are, and I bet they’re smart enough to configure the electronic oil pump to put out the correct pressure in a whole range of engine oil viscosities. Please stop with the kool-aide and shoot everyone straight. 0W16 is government juice, just like DEF in a diesel after treatment system.

I have an old 80's EEC-IV Ford book that went into detail on how many microseconds it took for the computer to calculate injection times. It said the computer used up only 30% of its computational speed. Now that computers are faster, imagine how many additional factors can be taken into account.

Agreed... thin oil is NOT as bad as it seems. In old cars, (even going waaaaay back to the 1920's) oil was primarily a lubricant and it's partial coolant properties were a side benefit that didn't matter, the older you go the less importance cooling was because metals were more tolerant and engines didn't make much power... As cars got newer they started to make more power and oil flow was increasingly needed a coolant, even commuter cars got oil coolers (once a high performance thing)- then oil had to travel to more places, while moving quick enough to do hydraulic things (variable valve timing, variable lift, turbocharger cooling and lubrication) and flowing oil is more important. It may flow like water, but it's supposed to, and it's supposed to be designed around that. If you are even doubting the oil in the least, just change it more often.... nothing bad will come from that... oil wear and buildup is way worse on these new engines... If there's any motto it's "keep it flowing" not more pressure.

The best part of this engine is Toyota went back to the steel spin on oil filters. The plastic ones on the 2017 and before models suck and make a mess changing the oil.

Thanks, TCCN learned a lot I took our 2019 Rav 4 LE AWD back to the dealer because of the noisy motor they said it was normal. After our old 08 Rav 4 burning oil issue which they honor didn't want to wait.
