One of my favorite things about Toyotaru is, as you pointed out in the short, him being able to recognize his shortcomings and improve. It’s honestly inspiring how humble and willing to learn he is.
What? I thought you were suppose to lash out at fans who give you negative feedback and never improve yourself because in their mind they can't fail and recognize their shortcomings. Isn't that what they do in the west?
@@Jays_dead_cat no. No it isn't. Most of the time when I see people "lashing out" it's because others are straight up insulting them under the thin guise of "art critique". At which case, it's less an "east vs west artist" thing, and more of a "social media is a cesspool of garbage people insulting each other loudly" situation. The most vocal artists are the ones you will remember, because no one ever says a word about the millions of comic and manga artists who say nothing on social media and just keep their head in their work. Because there is no juicy artist drama in that.
Toriyama was right when he said Toyotaro is too safe when it comes to the manga. which is weird because his volume covers and some illustrations he makes are so impressive and risky for a dragon ball style because we rarely see them. he honestly needs to bring some that insane posing into his manga. until he learns to take risks with the manga itself he will never surpass toriyama
Its obvious from Toriyama's perspective that he wants toyotaro to comfortably make the dragon ball manga his own. He will glance over stuff and make his own suggestions for additions but he would prefer if Toyotaro felt like he could make the manga how he wanted and include more of his own style
@@jensennguyen02 I don't mean like story or characters I mean in how he lays out pages and angles he uses. He's definitely too safe with manga layout and shot composition
@@arbetor12 there's multiple factors in adopting such a beloved franchise especially taking over the creators shoes. All aspects are needed to make db toytaros
After the Legend's passing away, he did pass the pencil and paper to toyotaru, may he carry his legacy forward and bring good to all. Rest easy Sir Toriyama
exactly. theres of course perspective but that right arm is so much smaller than the left. bent weirdly too. can tell was just trying to fit it in frame after he drew the rest of goku so its a little warped.
@@anouaressanoussi thats just how artists are, overtime your style changes. you learn new techniques that make the process faster or easier. new ways to draw and connect lines, new ways to ways to shade, new ways to color code. an artists style staying the same over so many years is very rare
I mean it's minor changes unlike Boruto mangas Kishimotos apprentice literally made Sasuke look like Snape from Harry Potter and have a such drastic change 💀💀
@@HayabusaRyuu Yeah dbs was never supposed to be cannon, neither was it supposed to be an ending for z, that's where gt comes in as the one true ending. I'm saying it should've been the ending, instead we get this endless cycle of keep getting stronger until their enemy will just be xeno or beerus.
@@licansen3331 Agreed. Also, I made a mistake while writing that comment. I meant to say that Toyotarou draws too many panels in one page which makes it look crowded, contrary to Toriyama who drew few panels in one page so, his was much easier on the eyes.
@@licansen3331 Actually, what are you talking about ? Tory is currently still writing for Dbs not Toyo, he just draws it. I don't see your point of this comment because this is an art perspective not a writing story perspective.
I like him looking like a villain because technically according to that tea that detects impurities he was completely pure no matter the sins he committed because by all accounts at first he had good intentions (by DBS god standards)
That's not true at all. If you're referring to facial expressions, then Toyotaro's Zamasu just looks soft and nervous with low confidence, while Toriyama's looks determined and confident. Obviously one is more accurate to the character.
Rest in peace 🕊️ toriyama We will miss you so much My childhood memories,we Will miss you...❤ You are the one and only legend that made history... We will never ever forget you.. THE LEGENDARY WRITER AKIRA TORIYAMA ❤❤😢😢😢😢😢😢❤❤
gotta give credit to Toyotaro. He knew damn well he didn't even come close to Toriyama's level (and perhaps never will) but he knew someone had to do it and he was willing to try and be worthy
Toyotarou is a good artist, won't deny. But Toriyama has such a distinct and refined style that you stop glancing at the art and just have to take it in. Especially when you compare them. It looks like a timeskip of the character from when he was a fledgeling with silly powers to becoming badass master XD
Well, Toyotarou will keep on improving, I mean it'll take time. However I don't get why people wanna diss him, since he is Toriyamas apprentice for a reason
I thought it was just me lmao. Like I’m an artist as well and am not good at drawing arm muscles and what not, but the arms definitely felt off to me in that image 😂
Well, now with Toriyama gone (R.I.P.), Toyotaro needs to step up his game if he plans on being the ONE TRUE successor. Thank you Akira Toyriama for bringing us thee Greatest character in Anime history of all time. You will truly be missed.
It is also noticeable that that comparison is with a pose similar to Toriyama’s style. In other words, he only comes close to Toriyama when he mimics Toriyama.
it reminds me of when boku no hero started and people kept talking about how much better than other mangas like naruto or bleach it was. completely disregarding everything they did because BnHA was the new big thing.
@@gamingwithrudra2514 the student can always surpass the master but knowing their culture the will always say the master is better. It’s like me saying im more intelligent than my school teachers, could be, but I’ll never truly admit to it because without them i would be nothing! But in Akira Toriyama’s case he was not only great, he took a simple anime style perfected it and made it to where it is recognizable all over the world.
Toyotaro does something I can’t get over with the manga, it’s that almost everything everything looks so stiff. It’s hard to really place my finger on (and no it’s not because of increased detail) but it looks as if the fighters are flexing at all times and can’t relax. What’s weird is that more detailed manga haven’t had this issue for me, for example one punch man.
It’s actually the style of drawing when you see toriyama goku looks so natural and when toriyama has to pop off he does but toyotaro even tho he is a great artist I dare to say even that toriyama couldn’t had picked a better successor(I would say fenyo but that’s just my personal opinion) but he trying to pop off in every drawing and it sometimes feels like he is trying too hard for me toriyama just more fluent with it and let’s goku actually breath
it just depends on how the artists studied anatomy. murata very obviously has done alot of gesture and referenced drawing over time while toyotaro most likely did not
@@aahhhhhhhhhhhhh that’s also true but I feel fenyo style gets super close to toriyama even closer than toyotaro but he is not drawing full mangas so is different
The coolest thing would be to see the initial statement become true, nothing would be more dragon ball than the student surpassing the master and his own limitations
Just hard to beat experience, but it doesn't overshadow Toyotaru's love for the series. I appreciate any artist who loves their craft and puts for the effort and you can tell he's not doing this out of obligation, but love for Dragonball. That's what matters.
Not really- what matters is quality. Of course you want someone who puts effort it, and loves the source material... but that's not what matters. What matters is the end product, and its just not there (yet).
@@slightsippage7075he is good tho, anyway you look at it he does decent to great on most panels and is better than a looooot of manga artists who dont get the same flak. he could improve 4sure but there are better people to critique their art
Gotta appreciate that we have someone capable of carrying on the legacy in toriyamas absence, unfortunate that so many artists work are unable to reach this level of depth and admiration
toyotaro has the added burden of having to imitate an established mangaka’s art style. if he just went with his own style i think his work on DBS would be less awkward
The likeness isn't the issue, it's the fact that his anatomy is stiff and at times blatantly wrong That's not something that happens because he's constrained to Toriyama's style
I don't know how to break this to you but this is Toyotaro's style. This isn't an Ikemoto/Kishimoto situation. Toyotaro's artstyle is a variation of Toriyama's.
I think the whole point of toriyama teaching Toyotaro with drawing dragon ball characters is so dragon ball will continue past his death. Plus he was apparently in the middle of several dragon ball projects that I think will be finished.
Toriyama is a master at drawing action, it’s wild just how much he controls your eyes when you read his stuff, even from early Dragon Ball, the man has talent and years of practice It’s astounding that to this day he can still draw like that
The thing I love about Toriyama’s art that probably not many people pick up on is his use of swear drops. Nearly all battle panels are characters with this interestingly placed droplets. I hate that Toyotaro never continued it. But it really brought human elements to his drawings
Even the example used to show why toyotaro is better is actually an example in favor for Toriyama. Its just technically better executet and looks more natural
Toyotaro's work looks like someone trying to imitate Toriyama's style. It doesn't look bad, but it's still off and it's noticeable. Toyotaro has room to grow and I'm glad he acknowledges that.
Toriyama's art, despite being uneven, always has that light feel to it. Toyotaro draws more evenly, but he overuses same poses and expressions-- many of his panels feel samey.
We love Him because he's humble and improves but Toriyama Has a whole feel to his work. I watch dragon ball Past to this day Just to play on the TV While I Cook dinner for my Kids. I love that its continuing though
Toriyama admits that Toyotaru issue is that he's being too safe with his drawing. The way he draws doesn't realistically allow him to grow as an artist as critism by obsessed fans are always going to put his work down by always comparing it to Toriyama which is why he sticks to the safer side of things and while you may have people like this guy who says he means no disrespect he still continues to and mind you that's just one fan imagine that but millions and I honestly don't blame him and appreciate how much he cares and tries his best to grow as you can tell his love for Toriyama work and how humble he is. The critism would've been so much worse if he made the risky style of drawing but probably still would've benefited his drawing style in the long run. Honestly I do hope he does obtain to courage to experiment to do risky stuff mainly with the action poses. Cause with the faces he seems to have nailed it.
True so true, though I might add I think Toyotaru is the perfect man to continue the manga, you can feel the love he puts into it and imo that is priceless! Buuut people who say stuff like that that he surpassed Toriyama just never read the OG manga period.
I hop that now that Toriyama is gone that this doesn't dull Toyataro's creative spirit because even if he isn't as good as Toriyama was he's still an amazing artist and I hop he'll one day reach the level of Toriyama or even surpass him but RIP Legend you'll always be the father of Dragonball and Anime
Bro that Zamasu drawing really highlighted Toriyama's level. The line width control, the understanding of how the clothes wrapped around the body, the fact that it all came together to provide a clear emotion in the overall picture. Toriyama wasn't drawing pictures, he was making *art.* Rip to the goat 🙏
I personally believe it's incredibly disrespectful to put two amazing artists like them in a competition of who's the better of the two. Art isn't a competitive sport, it's expression. And both artists are phenomenal in their own right.
I love ya Not Mark. You and your videos genuinely put a smile on my face. I’m kicking the habit of smoking, drinking, and vaping since I recently found that I’m preggers, and your videos really keeps my mind off the constant naggin of my addictions. Your enthusiasm and passion really has become the drug for me, and I hope I can get my future child into anime and manga by introducing him/her to your videos🥰🙏 please stay motivated, humble, and hilariously passionate! Mark..don’t ever change 😊
You can't even compare vagabond and Dragonball in any way. well yes you could say that the guy making it has a better art style thing is that toriyama's art style was week-to-week well vagabond is monthly to years in the making of chapters. And if you do want to compare, yes the drawings are detail but not nearly as dynamic as toriyama's art style which I consider much more important than looking detailed
What I mean by dynamic is that it has much more interesting posing and angle's and I said month to yearly as in it has a very inconsiderate schedule and can take years until we get a chapter
@@coleplush7805 no that’s just a hiatus the manga itself is monthly dragon ball took hiatuses as well. I would disagree about the dynamics I think the positions of the characters in vagabond is superior to dragonball in nearly every way. But art is subjective so if you disagree then that’s perfectly fine but saying vagabond isn’t more detailed would just be wrong.
@@THAT_GUY119 a lot of people view Boruto's art as below average for a monthly release to be fair. A better comparison would be like One Punch Man or Berserk art. Frankly I think crowning any one artist as "the best" is kind of pointless because other artists excel at things that one artist sometimes didn't involve themselves with much. For example, some Western comic artists like Alex Ross (DC) and Brent Bristol (Ordeal, a Webtoon) excel with colours, which is something most manga artists don't get heavily involved with because manga is typically printed in black and white.
The world he built! Do people really not understand how good his shape language is? Illustration is just the beginning. Designing characters and environments is infinitely more difficult than drawing cool fights. I don't think amateurs understand that learning to draw is only a small part of being well rounded artist.
Everything toriyama did was outstanding but my favorite part was always the facial expression the characters would do. Whether it be shocked or hurt, terrified or bothered. He knew how to convey emotions through looks and that takes talent. RIP Akira toriyama.
Just looking at Goku's right arm in Toyotaro's drawing.. Not saying it's bad but it feels like it's smaller and out of proportions with his other arm. But it's an u fair comparison to begin with, which I think we should all be able to agree on.
