I have received a lot of messages about making patterns and turning them into a Rhythm track.
In this video, I go through the creation process of making patterns, editing my sounds (tune, decay, pan), Copy pattern from A to B. Created a pattern with 32 steps (1rst Part, 2nd Part). Composing a Rhythm Track, using INSERT and COPY measures in the Rhythm Track.

As an original owner of the TR-808 i finally got one of these as well. I also have the 909, 707, 626, and 606. I think this 08’will be the only “next gen” version as i still gravitate to the originals i have. I had a 727 (which js just like a “latin” version of the 707, which is my favorite.

Hey, I just tried to practice this what you were showing in this tutorial but for some reason my machine does not play my recorded patterns into compose a track. I'm able to re-call and find my patterns but the moment I switch in to "compose track" it won't play my recorded patterns. Are you able to help?

Because they all sound great I prefer the TR-8 over the TR-08 and TR-09 for the interface and the added sounds. Check out these videos where I compare the three of them. Hi thank you for all these tutorials on the boutique models, they are tricky to wrap your head around at first then become more straight forward with more practice. I have a question, when my bass drum hits on any given pattern sometimes it's decay is overwhelming and bleeds into the next drum sound or gets cut short when another sound is in the same slot as it. i have no accent on the slots either, why is this happening ?

How long to learn this ,? The copy bit seems well easy to get confused and maybe mess up something you like , i rekon im going to have so many mess ups but its time ...ive it a month and i still look at it every day on my frontroom table but didnt have a clue Because the instructions are crap compared to korg instructions ,this is a great start up And to be honest its all i need so if i can get all that down im going to be stoked ,

I never got to the max amount of patterns. But according to the "manual" you can have up to 1000 pattern in one Rhythm Track.

Hi Jay, I don't think so because there is no Patch memory, only pattern memory.

Hello, cool and clear..nice if you know : if we tune kick or hit hat by the menu can we save this setting ? can we save a automation, modulation of a instrument if we tweak by menu ? like hithat go tune up and down in one part. best vibes

No way to save the tuning. There is not internal automation. You will have to use a DAW and record the knob values. Then the sequence can control all of the chances in real time.

7:36 this part was very helpful for me so big thanks for this - one thing i have noticed is the accent feature appears to effect all sounds on a chosen step for example.. if you put an accent an a snare at step 5 every other sound that hits step 5 also accents - is there anyway of stop this - like on the tr-09?? cheers =0)

The original TR-08 as the accent affecting all sounds this way... so I guess the TR-08 replicates the same behaviour?

To play Variation Fill in You need to press Tap while having one of the Fill ins Bank selected. Overall Good Video Bro Much Needed to see this in effect. I am still trying to figure out the whole A,A,B,B scenario. When Composing does it play PT.1 A,B, PT.2 A,B? I heard You hinted that It wouldn't, but I believe in this video it played A,B,A,B.

In this video, it played A,B,A,B because it's how it was played while I was in compose mode. IT will not do the same when in manual mode and pressing memory 1 to 4, like I tried in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0MBiS7tdnto.html. But I mixed information from the TR-8 and TR-08. When Playing a manual sequence (not a Rhythm track) goes 1A,1B,2A,2B in the TR-8 but it gets 1A,2A,1B,2B. Or so it seems. I'll have to re-test it to confirm it.

I just can't understand how to compose a rhythm in 3/4. like a waltz type of rhythm. Am i missing something?

Use Scale 3. Set the number of steps to 12 instead of 16. I programmed the intro to YYZ on mine the other day. One measure with 16 steps plus another with 4, yielding a 5/4 time signature.

You dont' need to save. When you are in Pattern write mode, what you do is saved in memory. The had part is to be sure of which memory you saved in!

Don't forget that when in write mode you are erasing the pattern you are playing in. I think your problem is in managing memories.

mattis clement, no the sequence and the sounds are not linked. The sequence plays the active sounds. There is no wait to save the sound settings.

Hi Nu-trix. I have this setup: Volca Mix main clock>Volca Kick 4 bar straight kick>Sync out to SQ1>Midi out to Tr-08>Trig out to Tr-06. The Roland follows the Clock tempo if I change it on the Mix, but the Roland Kicks run faster than the Volca Kick. I tried to change active steps on the Kick with odds numbers, like 3,5,7,10,11... nothing... I couldn't sync the two systems whatsoever... If you could make a video where you could sync the two systems somehow without resorting to an external clock source for both systems I think it would be a nice test... cheers!

@@Nu-trix Yes, I was to write on that video but it played this one... I made it in the meantime! I used the Gate of the SQ1 to the Tr 06 trig in and it worked. The Tr 08 i used the midi out from the tr 06. tnx.

Not per say. There are LFO part of the drum synth engine that can create random changes. But no % of chance to play a note. At least not that I'm aware of.

odd behavior. so i can write a track to track 2 how i want it, but when i choose all the others track positions it wants to force a fill. when i didnt even write a fill. how do i clear all the fills off the unit so it doesnt grab at those? or disable that? my main complaint with this is a year later i still can't find a simple solution to clear the total unit memory. why can't i do a factory reset where every rhythm, sequence, track, bank, and so on is empty? is there a way to do a quick total unit erase?

TR-08: Factory Reset From Roland Product Support December 13, 2017 00:27 Here’s how to return the TR-08 to its factory-set state. 1. While holding down the [2] button, turn on the power. The [TAP] button blinks. If you decide to cancel the factory reset, turn off the power. 2. Press the [TAP] button to execute the factory reset. 3. When all buttons blink, turn the TR-08’s power off, then on again.

Nu-Trix The Synth Guy that's exactly what Roland suggested, but the factory reset doesn't clear it's memory. the factory reset replaces all my sequences with Roland's favorite sequences. So then I have to go one by one through everything doing a manual clear. it's a pretty cumbersome and unintuitive process :(

Rivulets of Piss oh I fully realize that, and he did a great job explaining this unit. I was just hoping maybe there was a trick that I had overlooked :) it's just odd behavior is all that to clear it you have to select every bank, every patter, every track, and press the clear button for each one, when the geniuses at Roland could have just programmed a simple button combination that allows you to blank the entire unit like how they flipped the switch in Jurassic park and cleared the entire system. Ah well.

aldo22 , the sound settings cannot be saved. Just like the original 808. The knob position dictates the sound.

Hi Paul, no the pattern does not save the Tempo value. You could change the speed by saving patterns using different Pre-Scale.

@@Nu-trix You said "from scratch," so I think you have to explain what you're doing on a more basic level. For example, the first thing you did was cleared memory 12 and 1. Why'd you pick 12 and 1? Actually back up: what are those 12 button for? And then there are four more buttons to the right of them. What are those for? What's a bank? Why are you in manual mode? I don't know what a "part" is. Why are there 2 parts? :)

@@bruhdamartinasty3636, the memories are grouped in 12 banks. I'm using memory 1 of bank 12. for this I have to select 12 for the bank then 1 for the memory in that bank.

You can only control the pitch up and down + some decay control. All the tones of the TR-08 are recreating the TR-808 sounds.

@@mcneu1 The effect youa re taking about is mostly done with a sample of the 808 hit hat. I'm not sure you can drop an octave on the TR-08. Keep in mind that the TR-08 has no motion record. You have to do the drop in real time while recording it or using MIDI control from a sequencer.

The TR-08 is made to replicate he original TR-808 workflow and behaviour. It's not the easiest and fastest workflow compare to today's devices like the TR-8 or TR-8S.

You really should start with a bass line and build the drums based upon the bass line's rhythm. Otherwise you add superfluous detail before you lay down a foundation.

I Agree. Everyone does it Their Own Way. I will write based upon certain chords, a drum pattern in my head, a bass-line. Whatever gets the Idea to Finished product. Their are No Rules in Art and Creativity. Do it Your Way - brother. Great information.

This is great! I've always wanted to travel back in time and use crappy hardware tools of the 80s. I'm so sick of getting rhythms up and running in 30 seconds with software. Now I can do the same thing in twenty minutes, while tearing my hair out. Thanks Roland!

I guess it’s always the question when replicating vintage devices: limit of the original or bring it into modern times. I also wished that the TR-08 on top of the original programming mode, would offert a more modern way to program the beats and songs.

I prefer hardware to using a sample pack, iv never used a vst and thought it's as good as the hardware original either ( ie, bass station) I hear you regarding the time used to do a simple task, but at least u can manipulate it after,some library's samples have iffy artifacts.

A Droit well you aren't being forced to support Roland. There are other companies that are giving you new stuff. Clearly Roland knows how to tug at the nostalgia strings
