I agree. Trancing seems very unnecessary! You explained it very well. I like that you mentioned that this could be something that a vet could do if deemed necessary.

I think great care and gentleness should be used for doing this, I agree about clipping nails, for safety for the rabbit. It makes me sick knowing people turned this into something to laugh at.

First time I had ever seen that was last week. Had to take my bun into the vet for an X-ray & when they brought him back he was like that & they even proclaimed how calm he was the second he was back in my arms I realized he was close to the scaredest he had ever been in his little life. It was heart wrenching actually, but likely better in his very senior age (13 yo) than anesthesia for the X-ray. Thanks for the video, now I know what happened, he was put into this state.

I wish this video provided demonstrable evidence to the claims about the stress; for example, taking a set of blood pressure, or a pulse prior to the trance, and another set during the trance to show an increase. At least a link to the evidence that back-up your claims would be appreciated.

My rabbit went into a trance after scrambling around the house out of fear of something outside. I had him on my chest just petting him when he suddenly went limp and almost rolled off. I had him in a small pillow/couch on his belly next to me for 2 hours and he would just breathe and watch me. Eventually he started eating the small greens I placed with him and got back up slowly. He never did that again but had some gut issues a few months later and succumbed to them. RIP Leo

I have had three rabbits; Lila is my only remaining rabbit.I lost my first Ruby- to my own inadequacy in knowledge and care.I lost Emma very recently as she went into a coma,probably due to her not eating because she had consumed carpet fibers in 2012 which probably had putrefied over time...I chose not to get her surgery.Lila is doing okay.She is around 6 years old..I have had them all since they were kits...Emma was older when I brought her home from the pet store: wherefrom I got all of them..Emma used to push a rubber beach ball around the house and in the yard..She was the most well balanced of the three.Ruby was my sweetheart,content to kiss me as long as I would avail myself to her grooming me.Lila is reticent.She is healthy.Her best friend here is not me as much as she adores our cat Olivia. I love rabbits ..." the eyes of god"..That is what my rescue rabbit friend informed of as being their folklore name???Did you ever hear that before? I merely wanted to share my enthusiasm for the rabbits with you...Be blessed.

karen crowe I think Emma's metabolism was not right, for which she couldn't choose what to eat and she ate carpet fibres. This happened to my rabbit too. Her name is totally silly so i can not tell you. She ate my phone's back cover which was not usual. So, i took her to the vet and he gave some antibiotics and a medicine which i don't know and she's now again health. (BTW My rabbits are just 5 months old.) Hope Lila live long. (sorry long comment)

I never knew about trancing, but knew rabbits generally don’t like being held. Mine used to be a show rabbit before I bought him, so he’s already used to being handled and groomed a lot. He’s generally very friendly and usually thumps his foot for attention. But he’s so used to me scooping him up and recently whenever I hold him like a baby he just lays his head back and moves if he feels I’m about to put him down, so I know he isn’t trancing or paralyzed from fear. My Momiji tends to act a little differently from typical rabbit behavior, especially trying to hump my legs when I’m standing. He’s unneutered, but thankfully doesn’t bite me.

It it possible for my rabbit to trance himself? He occasionally gets really excited and flops straight onto his back and stays there for a about a good 5-10 seconds with his eyes squeezed shut and his paws tucked close to his chest before rolling over onto his side and relaxing
@emberjuma8807
@emberjuma8807 6 лет назад
I believe she said he lays on his BACK!! Do you know or can you see every rabbit in the world? You can't speak to what other people see! Just because you haven't experienced it and you've read some BS study done by some low level scientist doesn't mean you know ALL! The same type of misconception was formed when a study about vaccines causing autism in humans was done. I'm in the medical field and I can tell you that is BS! And do you know how many children were caused undue harm because of that study? TOO MANY!! Just because someone puts something on the internet, doesn't make it true. That being said, I am sure trancing is a real thing, however, I believe some rabbits can be on their backs without being scared stiff (literally). My sweet baby goes on her back all the time, and today I took a video of it, and no I didn't do it to her, she does it all by herself! I'd be more than happy to share the video with everyone, just let me know. I just have a hard time believing that a beloved pet who trusts you would be that terrified if you put them on their backs. Now I can see how it'd be different if a strange scientist who is in a strange cold room did it to them, they're probably scared to begin with! My point is, I felt you were rude to Adrian Akabane, she has no reason to lie. So, just because someone refutes your argument, doesn't make them wrong.
@Zgirl008
@Zgirl008 6 лет назад
Uh mine did this to cuddle and he was not completely immobile because if someone who wasn’t me did it he’d freak the fuck out wriggling and screeching like someone is killing him but if I’m the only one in the room he relaxed next to me on his back
@emberjuma8807
@emberjuma8807 6 лет назад
MrZapparin...Im a troll?? That’s funny coming from an internet gangster/keyboard warrior! I think you need to reread what I wrote, then after you finish, you can stop by my house and see how “abusive” I am to my rabbits!! I’m in Las Vegas, NV…let me know when you want my address! Lucky for them, my rabbits are better cared for than most people in the world! Like I said, I RARELY put them on their backs, one of my girl rabbits does it herself when she sleeps! The only time they’re put on their backs is at the vet and when I cut their nails I flip them over, but I keep their heads slightly elevated & protect their spines. And they don’t go into a trance when I do it!! Do they like having their nails cut? NO, but they trust me, and it needs to be done! What animal flips themselves over and says "please cut my nails!"? NONE!! As for the vaccine comment, you really don’t want to go there with me! I believe what I said was that the study links vaccines to autism, but your mind read something totally different, so let’s address your misinterpretation! Vaccines are created from the dead or weakened viruses/bacteria (antigens) itself, so of course they cause “sickness”! That’s why most of us get a fever and feel like shit after we get a vaccine! The vaccine is injected so the body can form antibodies to it. After the “threat” is neutralized the antibodies break down, but memory cells (immune cells) remain. So, the next time our bodies come into contact with the foreign invader (antigen), it knows how to fight it…and it does this VERY fast. A LOT faster than if you’d never had the vaccine…so fast that we don’t even know that it’s happening! I made that comment to prove that we shouldn’t believe everything that we read/see on the internet! That study was done on TWELVE children at a time when the autism spectrum was beginning to expand based on new criteria & research. Just like this study was done on a small focus group. We can find correlation between almost anything if our views are skewed, it doesn’t make it true! I was sticking up for Adrian Akabane because someone called her a liar and I know she isn’t because my rabbit does the same thing. So the next time you want to comment on someone’s post, make sure you read it thoroughly and make sure you know WTF you’re talking about! And BTW, "shame on you", you know nothing about me, so keep talking shit behind your computer screen in the comfort of your home like the BIG man you are!!

This video is ridiculous. There is literally only one study done on rabbit trances. The study involved 6 animals, all that had been in the lab less than 3 months. (if I remember correctly some were there less than 2 weeks.) They found that putting rabbits in a trance state can increase their heart rate and they are indeed acting out of fear. However, a researcher in a laboratory knowing a rabbit less than 3 months is a far cry from the bond of a pet lover who keeps their pet for years and years. So you take a prey animal who is with a fairly unfamiliar human and put said prey animal on their back and were expecting what exactly? That said the study itself concluded that since animals developed an increase heart rate, they should limit tracing to nail and teeth clippings. I can understand not wanting to encourage trancing rabbits in pet owners since we don't know for sure if the rabbit human bond would be enough to not cause stress to the animal, but FFS if the veterinarians and researchers behind the paper can conclude that trancing can be used for grooming purposes on rabbits that barely know them, then don't you think it's a little overboard to tell pet owners don't ever trance ever?
@nightrabbit4u
@nightrabbit4u 6 лет назад
and for the record that was just the conclusion that can be drawn from that study, but it in itself is too small of a sample size to be conclusive.
@FrancisR420
@FrancisR420 6 лет назад
Are the control rabbits also being handled in some way? Or they just comparing the heart rate to the normal heart rate of a rabbit I mean correct me if I I don't know shit about rabbits but scratching your ass in the same room as a rabbit will increase its heart rate

Fifteen years with bunnies, nearly eight with my current goofball. The only time that I choose to do this is for a rabbit that won't allow claws to be trimmed otherwise. My current bun will SOMETIMES allow the handling of his paws for trimming, but usually he thinks it's some sort of game, licks me, pulls his paw away, and makes me catch it again; that means I could cut the quick. So, he gets tranced for just long enough for claws to be trimmed and then he gets all the cuddles in the world.

Sometimes it licks my hand while I'm scratching it so....at least in my case...it's pretty clear the little guy is neither afraid nor tranced -- it just really enjoys being held like a baby.

May I add something? I’ve raised, shown, judged, sold, and have taken care of rabbits ever since I was 11. I’m fresh out of college with a degree in Agriculture. Rabbits can become stressed out when doing this. While this video explains what it does, it doesn’t go into full detail. You can safely do this to rabbits! It’s completely okay. You just have to only do it when completely necessary. Like judging or grooming, you have to! Only do it for a short amount of time, and give the rabbit time to relax afterwards. That’s it! It’s simple. I wish people in the comments would calm down, and understand that rabbits are hardy animals.

My rabbit ever goes into a trance and I’ve had her for almost a year. But I sometimes hold my rabbit upside down but I don’t think she goes into a trance because she moves every few seconds and her chin is never on her chest. She is also very used to being held so she doesn’t really care when I carry her. Should I stop holding her like a baby upside down?

Once, my rabbit's tail got really matted and couldn't be brushed, so I tranced her and put a towel over her eyes to help calm her. It wasn't easy to get the tangles out. It took a really long time because I was afraid I might cut her tail. So I worked the matted fur in my fingers until the fur was flat and not a solid mass, so I could feel there was no tail there. Then I cut the fur and do the same to another section. I also tranced her when I needed to trim her nails so I could focus and not accidentally cut the quick. I didn't like trancing her, I knew she was aware of everything, and I would only do it when it was reasonable to do so. If you have a rabbit that is comfortable with you picking them up and trimming their nails, then there's no need to trance them. But my rabbit was not comfortable being held.

Except rabbits tend to throw themselves on their back all the time when they're sleeping. My rabbits looked dead on their back but it was just because they were super relaxed, both lived almost 10 years. It's only dangerous if you don't prop up their spine and do it for prolonged periods of time. It can't kill them if you do it for a minute to clip their nails lol. This is misinformation honestly, even the house rabbit society, which throws a fit over dumb things like rabbit stew, said you can trance them to do medical treatments to.

EXACTLY!!!! The only time it's okay for a rabbit to be on its back is if they put themselves in that position. My rabbit trusts me a lot so sometimes he flops over and throws himself onto his back to relax!

I have a hard time clipping my little buns nails, and someone referred to me about laying him in his back to clip his nails. After seeing this video I’m quite confused and unsure if I should try this... is it harmful if I only keep him there for a short period of time to clip his nails?

Carla J a lot of people think it is safe for rabbits and even though it is hard to clip their nails you shouldn’t ever do it you can experiment with different ways to trim your bunny’s nails!

Lauren Fiecke this is my last resort, I’ve tried every way possible, even the most popular of wrapping him in a towel with his legs out, he just won’t comprehend and it’s not like I’m being impatient, I have tons of patience especially for my little bun but he’ll never cooperate and this is honestly my last resort

No, all the vets i've gone to and the house rabbit society does it. As long as you're supporting their spine and being gentle it won't hurt them. The reason people say you shouldn't do it is because rabbits spines are delicate, stress isn't as common so doing it for a few minutes isn't hurting them.

I have a an American fuzzy lop and he will voluntarily flop onto her side or back for belly rubs and grooming but remains conscious and aware the whole time, sniffing and licking my hand and such, sometimes thumping a foot. Kind of like a cat. I have not always allowed her to be on her back this way as I know this is distressing for rabbits but once she reached maturity she acquired the behavior herself. I wonder why she is different!

What if my rabbit is used to being held on his back? I didn’t now it was bad for the, when I got my rabbit when he was a baby. He has never fallen in a trance when I pick him up and bites me if I pick him up in another way. I know not to pick him up often and only do so if I have to. Is this ok?

Very interesting that it's entirely involuntary and can even happen when on accident they're just doing their thing. TI is such a strange trait, I get that it's a last ditch effort in rabbits, but you'd think it would at least be controllable so they could shut it off if it's not working or if some poor stupid owner thinks it's funny.

I do not like trancing rabbits. I do have a lop that kicks out of nervousness when clipping his nails and when he is on the floor. He feels safe on high surfaces. So to stop that, I hold him close and place him in an upright sitting position in my lap, and while he is not tranced, he does relax more with his nose twitching, and he will look around some. He pulls his feet sometimes but it’s nothing I can’t handle. I wish he’d cooperate more but I’m thankful I never have to trance him, because it really does screw with their mental states a bit.
@JRJigsawyer

Ive had a rabbit for 3 years now and never even heard of this. He flops onto his side and naps sometimes but he never lies on his back like that, nor has he ever "tranced". He does NOT like to be picked up, so even getting him to trance would be incredibly difficult if we wanted to, which we wouldnt because it does seem logically to at worst be harmful, and at best unnatural. I suppose you might want this for nail cutting, but our vet is wonderfully adept with rabbits and he burritos them in a towel and does one foot at a time, and my girlfriend whos owned a rabbit for 10 years prior would do the same thing. They dont like it, but they bounce back very quickly and when you cover them fully like that they struggle less, you can be confident and still gentle enough to not hurt them. There is a technique to it that works.

When it comes to animals in general there is always a big argument so let’s all just agree that people take “care” of their animals however they do and there isn’t really much you can do to change their opinion or mindset.

I agree with the video. Unnecessary prolonging of the animal's suffering is stupid. The quickest and most painless method of killing is dislocation of the thoracic vertebrae.

it's called "tonic immobility" and is a weird automatic stress reaction to being flipped over. their heavy breathing and increased heart rate, and increased distress after they "snap out" of the trance, should be giveaways that they certainly do not enjoy it.

sometimes it does have to be done. I have 3 rabbits and two of them have very poor hygiene skills. to prevent fly strike I have to put them on their back in order to clean their underneath areas as they get all sorts stuck on their fur and into a real mess. there's no other way to clean them as it's constant. they tolerate it quite well and I make sure to bring them round afterwards gently with a big fuss. definitely the lesser of two evils in this case I believe.

Rebecca Surkitt agreed. My rabbit gets all sorts of things stuck to her paws belly and tail, this is the only way I am able to groom her. Especially her nails! She Gets very fidgety so I like to wrap her in fleece and cut her nails. No pain for her and easy for me
