I often wonder, as a trans man, where the girls are too. I had one transfemme friend in real life and she was awesome. She moved away and we lost touch, and I haven’t met a local trans girl since. My trans masc friends are great, but the perspectives of the trans girls I’ve met online are really valuable and help me keep my perspective open. I hope things get better and it’s easier for trans women to come out.

this is wild to me because even tho i'm trans masc, the majority of my trans social circle are all women. i'm only 23 as well so i definitely fit into the category of trans youth. i wonder what the correlation is and why i don't know any other trans mascs.

I’m trans fem myself, and I’ve found tons of us online, way more so than trans masc ppl. It’s strange how flip-flopped that is.

You mentioned trans healthcare probably won't be too effected in Canada imminently, but there's actually policy changes currently happening in Ontario around transition-related surgery. It's genuinely hugely negatively impacting my life because they're refusing to cover my orchiectomy under the grounds of not wanting to cover "non-binary" surgeries anymore. And I'm panicking about it and no one else is talking about it and I'm honestly so deeply concerned about the direction trans healthcare is going in under the conservative provincial government here. I really wish I could provide sources because I don't want to be shouting about unsubstantiated claims. But the policy decision hasn't been finalized yet, so all I have is what the Ministry of Health has been telling me over the phone about the status of my application. UPDATE: It looks like the policy change didn't go through and my application has been approved! So while I'm horrified that this was even an issue in the first place, at least things are looking up! (I know I'm losing my heart from Lily because I'm editing this, but I felt it was important to update)

@acehealer4212 Really? What could go wrong with following the children. Someone with the maturity and life experiences of a 14 should be leading this issue? There is a certain level of maturity and atca minimum we think 18 is that line; for discussions impacting reproductive health we tend to move that bar even higher. 😮

I certainly agree with you, but then I would also count Lily as one of those “intellectuals from the Internet” … who happens to be trans. I greatly admire the work she has been doing on the community’s behalf on this channel and have been extremely impressed with the quality of her work, research, and production quality (and this comes from a 50 year old intellectual and is by no means empty praise)! But we, as a society, have long had a tendency to miss the trees for the forest. We often do so with the best of intentions, but can you say “Oops!”. As a non-binary trans I may share some experiences in common with fellow binary trans persons, but it would be wrong of me to assume that I fully knew what the binary trans person’s life experiences were growing up and with respect to body and gender dysphoria and other aspects unique to being binary and trans (e.g. speaking ONLY of my OWN lives experience, as an AMAB NB I really only ever experienced gender dysphoria, as I was ultimately able to come to a place of accepting my physical body since it is not a total betrayal of who/what I am and I was able to accept the masculine parts of me as valid even if I identify more so with the feminine parts in many respects). The same is true if we reverse that as binary trans certainly share a good deal in common experience-wise with non-binary folk but are never going to have had the exact same life experience as one of us on the gender spectrum in-between the two binaries (or trinary states counting intersex) and thus the binary can never quite know the unique experience of not being binary. And of course neither of us may fully understand the lived experience of someone born intersex unless we just happens to have also been born intersex. It is always best to seek your data from as close to the best possible source as practical if you want good results! If you wish to know what is going on in the lives of teens and young adults, interview the teens and young adults!

They are given so much more attention by conservative outlets. People say they're "cancelled" but check anyone who was "cancelled" and they're doing fine. Now compare that to physical violence and lack of medical support trans people get. Please do some actual research and look at the actual picture because if you only read from one side you get an incredibly biased view. And any time someone cries that people are getting fired for misgendering someone, no one can actually give any actual examples. It's starting to feel like it's just fearmongering. I would love to read what you're talking about, but I never find anything. I'm gonna need you to tell me which trans writer is "looking forward to erasing women". Just give me that link. Meanwhile I will be sad that Noah Ruiz (who was born a woman, but now looks like a man) was forbidden from going into a mens bathroom and was then beaten up by three men. You claim there's people getting assaulted and separating children while I'm giving ACTUAL trans victims of transphobia. If there's no transphobia, then why are trans people getting assaulted? 4:25 To speak to my own experience/pet theory of being trans female, i find that it was less the stigma of being a woman, and more the stigma of being an AMAB. As it typically goes, males are much more lustful than female, and while in some case this isn’t wrong, this creates social stigma for anyone AMAB transitioning as more of a sexually perverted act rather than an actual gender identity. This is what i assume gives way to arguments made against trans women such as J.K Rowling’s “they’re invading the safe spaces of women.” Which would make it immensely hard for AMABs to not be viewed that way by the general public. anyway, thanks looking at my take and if you read this far i hope you specifically have a rad day

I didn't realize how much demographics had changed until I went back to college. I started HRT at the same age as you in the early '00s (maybe '03-'04), and in college I was the only trans person in my college's LGBT group. I only met one other trans woman between '04-'09 there, no trans masc or enby people. I went back to the same college again in 2018, and the LGBTQ+ group was not only 40% larger, but almost entirely comprised of trans or enby AFAB people, with no AMAB trans or enby people, other than myself.
@ashkhol
@ashkhol 2 года назад
While that’s true in some ways, that’s mostly among younger people, and mostly centred on TikTok. On places like reddit, where the age demographic is not only older, but also more diverse, the overwhelming majority in trans spaces is trans women. The most likely reason for what you’re seeing is simply how much easier it is for afab people to explore gender non-conformity compared to amab people. This allows them to realize and understand their gender identity at a younger age.
@love-ip7sz
@love-ip7sz 2 года назад

@@ashkhol Can't see the other comment you're replying to, but here are some thoughts. Generally, I think it is easier for AFAB people to play with gender and come out younger right now. My guess is that trans women are coming out a little later, and also organizing in more traditional online communities than trans masc people. I also think trans women live more of their lives digitally. That is my guess, anyway. I also think that being afab and trans or non-binary is an identity which has carved out more space/social acceptance than being amab and trans or non-binary. Visibility has gone back and forth in my lifetime, I feel. In the '90s, I basically never saw trans masc people, and society was obsessed with trans women, so depictions leaned toward trans femmes. I think trans men kind of 'hid out' in lesbian communities, historically, but I would not say that relationship held for trans women and gay men. So if you didn't want to be totally repressed as a trans femme you either 'crossdressed' or just came out and started transitioning - the amab equivalent of being extremely 'butch' prior to medical transition was not an option for me. So, I think there was more of an emphasis on medical transition for trans femmes than trans mascs, and more societal pressure to be binary-adherent. I am really curious to see the numbers in 5 or 6 years when the average gen z is an adult. Then we'll see what the distribution is.

Trans youth from America here. Didn't come out til I was 16 for multiple reasons. A) I was aware of dysphoria but told myself I was a "femboy", since it was easier to accept it being a sexual thing then me thinking my whole life was a lie. Considering the closest thing AFABs have is "tomboy" which is still very feminine, I have a feeling a lot more young trans women hide under this label than young trans men do under others. B) I had never really been allowed to explore being feminine. The second I put on my first dress the realization I was trans came very quickly. But considering up to that point every time I had acted feminine I had been scorned by society and my family, I just didn't get to act feminine very often. C) Dysphoria hadn't gotten bad enough yet. You can ignore it to a certain point but by the point in my life that i came out i spent every waking moment thinking about being a woman. D) I didn't know anything about trans people. Once it was explained to me I knew immediately I was trans. E) I like men. Easier to hide in the femininity gayness offers you then to throw away all of your privilege and become hated by 60% of society. In short I just think it's easier for trans men to come out. Not only can they transition much faster, easier, and less expensively than trans women, there's also more freedom in gender expression if you're born with a vagina. At my school we have a pretty equal number of trans women and men now, but notably all the trans women came out junior or senior year when most of the trans men came out in the 8th or 9th grade. I also think that being a straight trans women means it's easier to hide in the stereotypes of a gay man for longer, which is why there are such low numbers of straight trans women in the youth. Obviously the difference between trans men and women in the adult population comes down to toxic masculinity and the more targeted hatred against trans women, but these are my rationalizations as to why the number is smaller in trans youth. Trans women just tend to come out later, there's not less of them.

Thankfully my transition has been smooth sailing ever since it started. I'm in high school in Canada and I haven't had many problems. Just took a long while to get testosterone. I feel so bad for those who aren't as lucky as I am. I'm SO incredibly lucky and I'm very grateful for it. It's made my life like 1000 times better overall and I want every trans person to feel the same

I think this has a lot to do with community, my girlfriend had a group of “guy” friends and, while she always knew she liked guys, it took two of her “guy” friends coming out as trans women within a month of each other, and then a third coming out as non binary for her to finally realize and come out for herself. now her group of “guy” friends contains only one cis male and I think that’s hilarious

I want to cry every time I hear about people on my states border, up in canada, getting surgery for free... I wasn't able to transition as a teen, because my mom passed away when I was only 15yo, and it was 2000 ,so I had a lot of fear about even thinking about telling another soul that I wanted to die because of this, this feeling that I have been born in a body that I wanted so desperately to crawl out of. I didn't even understand the words to describe any of it. But just twenty years later, everything is so different already. Kids understand whats going on, and they hear about it. And even the people fihting against it are only helping to magnify the issue in general! With the internet and social media being so much more useful and widspread, that means kids get more than just the opinions from those bigoted people, they get the whole story themselves. I'm sure there are still youth being trapped in the dark about these topics, but it has gotten better, It's just insane to think of how much better things are for trans youth than when I was young, and then think of some strangers who don't know any trans people are suddenly being the ones trying to dictate the rules. Like, wtf?! No one should have to spend their whole lives trying to beat away dysphoria without the proper tools, while simultaneously playing catch up in life due to all the other issues that repressing, being closeted, and even being out can all have on some people. It gets me so upset just thinking about it. I know I'll never be able to afford any surgery, because i live in america, where medical/insurance companies are allowed to gouge us into poverty regardless of the illness or disorder... But I'll be damned if they're going to take the right of ally parents to help their trans kids get the affirming care they deserve.

It's a thing i've been noticing lately, but it seems like every group of trans people feels like there's less people of their specific group about (I've experienced this myself as a trans man, feeling like there's not many trans men about in my spaces, and lots of nonbinary people and trans girls/women). I don't know where this comes from but the theories are remarkably similar, that that group is having a harder time coming out lately. It's interesting and I think generally there might be personal biases going on here, which is fine, we all have different wants and needs, but I find it all very interesting.

Excellent and informative. I'm cis, but I'm also a science writer, and I've spent a couple of decades debunking crappy science takes on all manner of scientific subjects. It's notable that, in the last few years, more and more of my time has been spent on this subject. It's very difficult to stem the tide of scientifically illiterate idiots insisting that 'biological sex' is what matters, despite the fact that the term is scientifically meaningless, not least because there isn't a single definition of sex used in the sciences. Also worth noting that the idea that it's settled that there are only two sexes is an incredibly anti-scientific notion. Science doesn't do settled except in one very specific set of circumstances, namely 'this hypothesis is wrong'. Thank you for this. It's always good to have more videos to recommend, and I will be recommending this one.

I'm in the UK where we, for the moment, still have free universal healthcare. But I have been on the waiting list for a NHS gender clinic since autom 2019. I had my first assessment appointment in April, and I just got a letter telling me my next appointment where I may or may not actually be given treatment by them will be in January 2023. Which is honestly faster than I was expecting. Facial surgeries, which is the only surgerie I really want right now are not provided by the NHS though. I'm super lucky to have been with a private clinic and been on HRT since 2020 so I'm doing good. But I've had to spend a lot of money over the last few years that I shouldn't have had to. And for someone on benefits due to chronic health issues that's not been easy. And given the rhetoric coming out of the governing Tory party of late, both on slashing the funding for public healthcare in general, and denying the existence of trans people specifically, the situation isn't going to get any better for the next couple of years at least. If the Torys win the next election I would be very surprised if public transgender healthcare survives at all. And I'm in my 30s. I've heard so many terrible stories from young folks who have had a much worse time of it than me

i’ve also noticed the difference in how many transmasc people i see vs how many transfem people i see. i go to an arts magnet high school where the percentage of trans students is very high compared to a regular comprehensive school, and i still dont know that many transfem people compared to the lots and lots of transmasc people i know (although part of that is probably that there is a larger percentage of afab people in general). i also am a counselor in training at a very queer-accepting summer camp, and out of the 18 of us in the program all but one of the guys are trans, but there aren’t any transfeminine people at all. its interesting how skewed the demographics are, as well as how they start to even out as you look at older trans people.

It's made up of grifters, anti LGBTQ groups/politicians, TERFs, misogynists, transphobic celebrities, family values organizations (usually right wing), incels, ultra religious groups, White nationalists, other ethnic/religious extremists, and parents who don't trans or LGBTQ children (or do, espouse animosity towards them on that fact, alone). On a parallel note, I think it'd be super cool if people cared about our rights after we turned 18. There is no substantial difference in the needs of trans youth and trans adults, and it sucks that I don't have access to a lot of services because I'm legally an adult and must therefore be fully independent and capable. I think there's an interesting parallel between how trans men are mistreated and how trans youth are mistreated: they're considered victims of a conspiracy to "ruin" them. But when trans girls become trans women we instantly transmute from victims to predators in the eyes of transphobes.

Thank you for this enlightenment on what has become a very controversial issue as of late, this information was well laid out and I also understand your position and all of the wonders the transition has been able to provide you. However I think it would also be important to address the other side's concerns. The main arguments against these surgeries are that someone who is young shouldn't be able to make a life changing decision, just as they aren't allowed to consume alcohol or drive because our system has deemed someone that young as irresponsible. The other argument is that the huge influence that the entire LGBTQ movement is having on the young population could be influencing their decision to transition rather than their own feelings, and thus they should decide what gender they are after having experienced the one assigned to them first in order to not make a long lasting decision. This doesn't denounce your facts or figures but I would think it's important that these issues are addressed before any real progress can be made, and both sides of the argument can come to an understanding.
@lily_lxndr
@lily_lxndr 2 года назад
I think it’s really important to reiterate that while *young people* (in the sense of 18-25s) get gender-affirming surgeries, *minors* almost never do. The WPATH standards of care make that all but guaranteed, and our data backs that fact up! The reason I don’t usually engage with these talking points is that the other side makes it sound like teenagers are getting hysterectomies left and right, which is just dishonest. Anyone over 18 should be free to make surgical decisions for themselves!

One of the biggest concerns among people who want to make medically transitioning unavailable for trans youth is that the youth wanting the treatments will later realize that they are cis. As a young person who spent a year of her life believing she was trans, I just want to point out that at no point did I want to medically transition. And even if I did want to, there was no way I would've been able to due to my parents. It wasn't accessible. With that out of the way, there's nothing wrong with young people identifying as trans even if they're going to change their mind later. Exploring my gender was an important part of becoming who I am. Treating a person as the gender they identify as will help them figure out whether or not that gender fits them. If a young person wants to medically transition, it's extremely unlikely they aren't actually trans. The people who want to make medically transitioning unavailable are basically saying that they know the teenagers who want to transition better than the teenagers know themselves. It's important to note that this conversation isn't about young children, it's about teenagers. Teenagers are completely capable of understanding that the effects of medically transitioning are permanent. Teenagers are completely capable of understanding whether or not they are trans. If a teenager is trying to medically transition, then that means they've already socially transitioned. The teens who believe they're trans, but might change their mind later are unlikely to have socially transitioned in the first place. And once again, there's nothing wrong with young people exploring their gender. Although I thought I was a boy, the closest I got to socially transitioning was cutting my hair, telling people I use they/them pronouns, and telling my two closest friends that I thought I was a boy. I didn't even consider coming out to me parents. The thought itself was terrifying. A young trans person has to go through so much before they get to a point where medical transition is even a possibility. In conclusion, the young people seeking out a medical transition aren't going to change their mind about being trans. The idea of changing your body in a permanent way is scary, and no one is going to do that if they aren't going to identify as trans for the rest of their life. Listen to teenagers instead of trying to make decisions for them. We aren't stupid. If anyone actually read this far, thank you. I hope you have a good day :)
