Why does everyone go on about Takara giving us another version? This line is manufactured for the first time as a unified line between Takara and Hasbro. Both of their Labels are pictured on the packaging. This is the Takara release, This is also the Hasbro release.
I actually like that the leader class figures are done this way. Instead of making them giants. My Titans Return Soundwave towers over Megatron... I hate that. The Seige figures all seem to be part of the same continuity, and the enture line (for the most part) seems to go together. I know the leader class price point grinds a lot of collectors gears, but the leader class toys have more than made up for their lack of size with solid builds, and tons of accessories. I am a little less than impressed with the Astrotrain size comparisons... but the figure looks cool.
Nic Patrie I agree with the most part it’s just comes with the problems with which character they choose to be a leader class. Magnus and Prime worked because the armor looked nice. Shockwave the armor looks really gimmicky, I personally just choose to keep it as hoverboard drone or add it to form the battleship alt mode. The Siege is the first part of what is dubbed the War for Cybertron trilogy. The next one is coming in 2020 as EarthRise. The upcoming Netflix series is met to follow the toy line like the previous trilogy by Machinama. Even the IDW comic reboot is taking inspirations from this line.
On shockwave, they “tried” to make it work.....as a “leader class” figure. They just gave up completely on trying to make astrotrain somewhat justifiable as a leader class.
I like this Astrotrain and appreciate we get characters that are in scale with one another better than having an oversized robot mode. I like the use of extra bits here than they did with Shockwave. I'm curious to see what other characters will get this treatment in Earthrise.
Wow, that is cool! :D I'll definitely consider picking up Astrotrain from the Siege line! :) Although, I do wish his head covered in Train Mode like it is in Shuttle Mode... Never like it when the face is fully visible in any vehicle mode... That's a just personal nitpick of mine, though... :P I mean, if his shoulder pylons weren't in the way you could easily turn his head 180 degrees so his face would at least be covered in Train Mode. That, and I wish the tinderbox actually connected to the Shuttle when laying it on the laid-out tinderbox, as well as having it connect all the way in the other mode for the Shuttle's launchpad, and I also wish the 2 ports in the Train weren't kinda blocked by its wheels since it makes it next to impossible to plug any weapons in there (and some other minor issues here, and there too), but, other than that, really solid figure in my opinion!
Paint complaints aside, I gotta say, I have REALLY been enjoying the Siege line. This figure and the Optimus Voyager one have been some of the best versions of those characters that we've seen in a long time. Great stuff.
Guys, Siege Astrotrain will be getting a rerelease in 2020's toyline, WFC Earthrise. This version is rumoured to not have battle damage, so if you want a clean Astrotrain, I'd suggest that you hold off the him for now.
Well done!! I didn’t know the weapons could be stored in the box like that!! Thanks for the heads up!! I rarely look at the instructions so I may have just missed it if it was there. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments about the figure and would also encourage anyone interested to pick him up while you have the chance. He’s a hefty chonky choochoo that is worthy of anyone’s desk or shelf space.
Thank you for your review. I agree he's small, but I agree he's really nice. I feel the same way about Shockwave he's small for a leader but worth it for an accurate bot and "sub" mode. This Astro is even better than Shockwave and he's super accurate! Keep up the great work my friend 👍👍
I actually like the size. It's really the price that brings it down slightly. Though to have the most G1 cartoon accurate Astrotrain in America ,I'll bite the bullet.
With those two holes on the back of the shuttle mode, a third party co can make a shield to convert as a back shuttle covering to peg on those holes to give it a smooth look.
you can unfold the box while its attached to the train to make a carrier, and if you heat the box hinges up you can lay the flaps out flat and let it cool (the black plastic is slightly flexable), that fixed mine up at least.
I like the leaders being voyager size with bits and bobs when it makes sense. Magnus was a gimmie, and Shockwave...that's so mad-science I LOVE it. Astrotrain here...If that coal tender could combine into better bot armour then I might think it's awesome. The barely-combined booties and backpack...not terribly cool. A bit of a shame. If the bot and 1 or 2 guns were sold as a voyager I might be more into this. Good thing Titans Return space-train is still satisfying if you're down with a different alt-mode design.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I wanted to say, I like that cover image! (Or whatever that’s called). Made me smile already...has a nice b-monster movie vibe... 😸
I have this guy but he did not come with his tail fin for his ship mode, but other than that he’s super good! In other words BEST AFFORDABLE ASTROTRAIN EVER!!!
the price points the figures are sold at - aren't - meant to be a scale chart, it's been like this for a while now, it's also why you can get voyager sized deluxes on occasion like Ironhide and Ratchet
with the tender box/launch pad storing all his weapons attached to his back in robot mode you can now replicate the Ground Gundam with its weapon container backpack from Gundam: The 8th MS Team.
The JNR D51 alternate mode works a lot better on Siege Astrotrain than it does in the 1980's toy. Now to wait for the D-Go and Machine Robo Loco redecos.
Alt-mode scale NEVER matters. Shockwave appears in every way to try and be a massive battle cruiser, much akin to a star destroyer or larger. Starscream is more akin to a fighter. Soundwave looks like a cargo ship... the space version of an FBI/CIA van that is full of spying equipment but pretending to be a delivery truck. None of them scale with one another, nor does Jetfire with the idea that the Autobots were supposed to ride inside of him either. Rather, I enjoy the G1 aesthetic of their designs and paint schemes with a modern twist. The bot mode scale is very nice, which matters a lot more to me. The "eader class" scale to me is far less about the size of the bot, but rather the accessories it comes with. I am happy with Shockwave, Ultra Magnus, and know that I will be happy with Astrotrain with his caboose/launch pad and extra guns. This will be the first Astrotrain I will have ever bought when it finally comes to my country.
Erm, not to get all "train spotter" nerdy, but it's a tender, not a tinder box; a tinder box is a small tin in which a flint, a steal and some tinder (hence the name) are kept in order to start a fire. And it's not technically a train unless it's pulling carriages, it's a locomotive. I'm not giving Hasbro anymore money for these voyager class figures packed with crap I don't want, I'll wait for Wei Jiang to do their thing!
After the last few reviews I'm just surprised Balt seemed to like this figure, asside from his usual gripes about the paint apps and those cursed hips he seems to always get.
There is one thing that we can do to fix the only issue that everyone seems to have with this one, wait for the inevitable Wei Jang oversized Knock Off. When that one comes out, it would surely be the most perfect release of the classic character yet.
Actually every single one of the siege leader classes have been a voyager with the extra accessories. And yes I agree that ultra magnus is the only one that works. And maybe the cybertron homage prime too.
What a fantastic figure and great review thanks for sharing this with us Baltmatrix and keep up the great work you do and as always transform and roll out 😀😊
I'm hoping we get a white, toy-accurate version of this guy as like a TF Selects or something along those lines at some point. I know some people love the grey and purple, but for me it just doesn't cut it. I want my Astro boy to be all shiny and clean.
The only problem I have with the figure is the wings and it size. It is a leader class but I wanted him to be as tall or taller as titan return blitzwing astrotrain is small even with the foot pads on.
I get that he should be bigger but to me if he was gonna be bigger it should been commander class like jetfire. Leader class figures haven’t been very big for a while their generally only about 1-2 inches taller then voyager . I like Astrotrain but I’d probably wait as well.
I really don't mind leaders being the size of voyagers but with more stuff, it always annoyed me a little because of how out of scale alot of the old leaders were compared to other characters, as an example I love that Titans Return Overlord towers over alot of bots because he did in Masterforce but when I see and Optimus or Starscream that's almost as tall as Menasor from the same line it comes off as an eyesore
You could tell Astrotrain missed Megatron in Season 3. So did I. He was cool as Galvatron, but Megatron was my favorite. Glad Astrotrain wasn't mortally wounded in the battle of Autobot City. He would have been transformed into a new Decepticon by Unicron too.
i have this and when I opened my package I thought oh leader class astrotrain but its not leader class put this astrotrain up against voyager siege starscream see what I mean , a uk store was charging more than what you pay for leader class for this voyager class astrotrain
The only thing I don't like is the empty space on top on the shuttle. Also, the front of the train is way too narrow. Still, the engineering is fantastic and I'll be sure to buy him...….. on sale.
Awesome figure amd I need an Astrotrain for my collection, but just like Shockwave, I will not be paying $50 for him. I'll just wait until he's $30 the same price I paid for Shockwave.
