In this video I discuss the basics of negative painting and cover working with positive and negative shapes. If you learned from and enjoyed this tutorial be sure to like, subscribe, and turn on your post notifications. I’m often asked questions about the materials and equipment I use in my painting process. To make this information readily available, I’ve posted a comprehensive list on the studio page of my website. The list details the materials that I use most often. Here is the link to my studio page. rsurowiczart.com/studio/ Also, don't forget to visit my website and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for watching!

I have watched this video a number of times, and for some reason this time around it makes more sense - possibly because I have been painting more. Anyway, the simple sample of leaves at first and then your more complex paintings at the end show how it can work very well. Thanks!

Thinking in shapes causes you to think out of your creative side of the brain, the right side. We mostly use our left, apparently, and because schools don’t teach art on the regular, we have become lazy and don’t even know how to get back to the right side of the brain. Thinking in “shapes”, even turning a picture to a different angle, helps us shift so we can express ourselves or copy art or whatever. This was a great video. Thank you.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 2 года назад
Too often we see "things", not shapes which contributes to overlooking what's going on throughout the entire composition both positive and negative.

I really appreciate your example of negative painting. I love how your leaves look. Right now I am trying to decide how to use this technique with a mama panda holding her baby in a very dark almost light and very shadowed picture. But there is light from above and I will use other bamboo pics to do the negative painting part. This was very helpful and I thank you. I will hide a small green lizard in there also. Take care.

When you give instruction it makes complete and total sense, when I try to put it into action it is less straightforward. It is hard for me, as a beginner, to really plan and follow through on my plan because mistakes send my plans out the window in the middle of a piece.

Try doing some pre-work planning in a sketchbook. Use sketches and studies to do your problem solving and use them to guide your painting process.

Rut, I agree Rick is a great teacher. The concepts he teaches about positive/negative painting, values, working from large shapes to small details are universal in any medium. The only difference is your materials and when painting in oils its best to paint using your colors DARK TO LIGHT. In watercolor color is painted LIGHT TO DARK.

Rick - when you apply a darker wash to an external edge you come back in and soften the edge with water but are you using a separate brush for that? Meaning you apply the pigment with one brush and then soften with another.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
That's a good question Paul. I often use the same brush that I apply the pigment with, however, there are times when I want more water and coverage than that brush can deliver and I'll switch to a larger softer wash brush. There are also times when I'll use a fine spray to soften the edge instead of a brush. To answer your question, I use these three different approaches.

Rick, I so want to learn negative painting. I find I am losing perspective on which leaf is which as I’m trying to paint in the negative space. I’m thinking of tracing each leaf with a different watercolor pencil to help me “see” which is on top and which underneath. It looks like when you are putting a leaf on top on another, you don’t see a tracing line that would be partially under the new leaf. Hard to explain. Maybe a more detailed explanation of how you put your leaves on the Paper?
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
Try to think about edges. Shapes are defined by edges. If you're painting within the inside edge of the overlapping shape, your painting in positive space. If you're painting around the shape along it's outside edge, you're painting in negative space in relationship to the overlapping shape. It's all about using edges positive or negative to define a shape.

Dear Rick Your teaching methods are such a pleasure to watch and learn how to use watercolor techniques. I so appreciate your narrative lessons that really help someone like myself to understand the methods to achieve a great piece of art. Thank you so much for these videos. I am fairly new to the watercolor world and actually took an expensive course that was offered in my area which taught me nothing but frustration. The teacher kept focussing on her style only(impressionist) and because I work more into detail and realism work in my art, I was almost frustrated enough to put this medium to the side and not explore the different concepts. But you and a few other artists here on the RU-vid channels have restored my faith in myself as an artist to continue to create with watercolors. Thank you again, sincerely Ursula

This is a very good video, well explained Rick, thank you. One of the hurdles for me is not to let my pencil drawing confuse me, be it flowers or overlapping leaves. I have to constantly observe where the shapes are and not confuse a positive with a negative.
