I’m a retired military aerospace engineer, and I’ve deployed to Afghanistan. Calling canards “ T-Rex arms” made me laugh even harder than the Thursday line. Well done HLC!
Desert Shield/Desert Storm/OIF/OEF veteran and 20 year pilot of the 15E. Thank you USSR (RIPieces) for cobbling together the Fartbat! Thanks to you, I had the BEST toys to play with for 2/3rds of my career (we're NOT going to talk about the 2 years I spent stuck in the 'Wobblin' Goblin' (/shudder)! Sincerely, JB III, Major General, USAF (Ret.) p.s. I know a LOT of our boots on the ground thank you as well!! Keep up the 'good' work because the -22 and -35 are just practice runs for what's next out of Skunkworks! See you in the rubble!!
@@nielsmichiels1939 She's slow, underpowered, and handles like a drunk pig, but we'll just call that growing pains. At the time, it was all the rage! So, I'll just chalk it up to flying the 22's daddy and say no more about it, lol!
Yay!! I'm not the only one. This granny of 67 years rocks all sorts of colors. Why? Because it's fun and I don't care about those who think it's just the weirdos that like color. And yah, he's absolutely right about canards!
As one of the "skittle-haired people" he's talking about... As much as I dislike being called "skittle-haired", that "canards are gay" bit was hilarious lmao. Sincerely: a gay trans girl.
Dude includes my favorite line from Watchmen. There needs to be an emoji for screaming loudly in pure joy while the world burns around you....that is what I need for this. Thanks bud.
The Foxbat was a technological marvel. As the u.s. discovered that when they got their hands on one. It was a marvel that were using vacuum tubes instead of transistors for their electronics 🤣
@@RipRLeeErmey or a typhoon which isn't stealth, it was made for one purpose find somthing and kill it, and to be fast to replace the tornado and harrier, and canberra
Thank you HLC for your unique take on news, I love your delivery and characters. I also treasure the fans who comment, one of the best communities to read. Almost entirely positive, I learn something new every time, and appreciate the sincerity and goodness found here, despite the grim backdrop of war. Tickles me that there is such a cross section of fans: along with the obvious armed forces element is paleo-nerds, grandmas (like me), aeronautical engineers, storm chasers, linguists you name it.
As someone with WAY too many hours of Kerbal Space Program under my belt, I can vouch for canards being the "boosters and struts" of fixed wing aviation.
I feel like people don't quite understand.... when 22 says "he's the most dangerous thing to fly since the Cretaceous period", he's not talking about the Dinosaurs, he's talking about the Asteroid the wiped out all the Dinosaurs.
To be fair, that didn't exactly "fly" as much as it "dropped like a rock." More like how Grandpa Buff is going to be by the time he's given his final upgrade before his retirement in the year 3155.
Quetzalcoatlus isn't a dinosaur, it's a pterosaur, which are also reptiles, but are a separate group. Pterodactyl is probably the most famous of the pterosaurs. The "Lock Ness Monster" looking reptiles aren't dinosaurs either, they're called Plesiosaurs. I assume Quetzalcoatlus is what he was referring to because it's the largest flying organism that ever is known to have existed, and had a 40 foot wingspan.
@@WinVistenThat's all well and good, but Raptor was referring to the cyborg T. Rex with jetpack, laser cannon, and sidewinders that he drew in flight school.
@@WinVisten Had a forty-foot wingspan, was as tall as a giraffe, had a mouth that could almost reach the ground standing up, frequently swallowed baby dinosaurs whole, and absolutely *could* swallow any human being whole as well. Literally a nightmare pelican.
😂 I'm laughing at, "we prove that what you say it does, actually it doesn't do it, so I accidently created the most dominate aircraft for" accident!! 😂😂
You guys are such teases. Come on, explain the joke. Okay. Nevermind. I googled my way to an answer.". Interesting. And not that surprising, to be honest. Before gay and bisexual men in the West started to come out of closet several decades ago, there were similar things. Hell, in some homophobic US states, I promise you there are still plenty of married "straight" men who say they are going out with buddies for a drink (which might be true) but end up with their end-up. Source: Trust me bro. No. Seriously. Just trust me. I'll spare you my long inventory of proof. So in the muslim world .. Uhhhh.... Yeah. They've got such medieval ideas about women, homosexuality and sex to begin with. I bet every man that an ISIS fighter threw off a rooftop was simply a gay guy who refused to give up their booty to them. Rejection hurts.
As an aerospace nerd- canards suck for stability. Their big claim to fame is that they are a more efficient way of lift generation, as rear mounted horizontal stabilizers usually generate negative lift, canards generate positive lift. However, they tend to be extremely unstable and simply aren’t great at radar cross section reduction. They make excellent sense for a fourth gen aircraft- it will be more maneuverable and able to climb more rapidly. They make terrible sense on a 5th gen style, where your primary goal is stealth, as you are generally increasing your frontal cross section and potentially your horizontal cross section as well
As far as the stability goes, Thats a feature of design not of the part themselves. Take the F16 for example, It was designed to require the Horizontal Stabilizers to generate lift instead of using said lift to make the aircraft fly level, Where as the typical design(as you mentioned) has the Stabs use lift to fly level. The F16 was intentionally designed in this way to allow for better maneuverability. What im getting at here is, it doesnt matter what the typical design calls for with canards/horizontal Stabilizers, it matters how the engineers designed them to function, as evidenced by the F16 an intentionally being designed as "Unstable". Final note, cause itll bug me if i dont. Aerospace deals with the engineering of flight in space. You should have used Aeronautical instead, which deals with engineering of flight in atmosphere. Was my major before i dropped out and went back into IT(Aerospace Engineering that is)
I vividly remember standing in formation for accountability while tornado sirens were sounding. Pitch black, wind whipping, rain pouring down and that damned siren. Good ol Fort Rucker.
Check again...canards have radar cross-section about the size of an F4 Phantom. The root of the canard is the problem; where it joins to the aircraft is a sharp corner. This makes a very efficient 'corner reflector'. Some angles of the canard are worse than others, but there is no stealth for Viggens, either.
Thank for the recognition for us here in Oklahoma, and in the Midwest. Had an uncle close to where three tornadoes tracked, Lucky he's okay. Sulpher got hit the worst of us, so we're doing all we Okies can to help them. Beautiful old town, sad to see it now. Just wanted to say thanks Habitual
@@Aqueox Haven't seen it yet, but I was watching Ryan Hall's channel and it looked like a conga line of tornadoes tracking north. Marietta was an Ef4 apparently, first since 2016 for Oklahoma.
@@WhiteIkiryo-yt2it Thanks. Only good news from this week is that the NBA team here in OK set up a relief program to assist in helping family effected.
Storm chaser here; the April 26 tornado event was a fucking miracle. On that day, we had numerous mile wide tornados and one possible two miler, several EF4, possibly EF5, strength tornados, many of which hit cities (Omaha, Nebraska caught two). Zero deaths. One severe injury. I expected a double digit death count (I was watching on radar as I was unable to chase that day). April 27 had a lot less tornados and those that did touch down were weaker, but they occurred at night and were a lot more rain wrapped (thanks low level jet) and thus was a lot less of a miracle and is the reason Oklahoma is currently in a state of emergency
@@jameskarg3240 yeah on the 27th you all didn't get much but one cyclic supercell just kept dropping tor after tor on the 26th. I hate chasing squalls because if they do drop a tornado it tends to have a lot less warning and it's a lot more likely to be rainwrapped but I'd def prefer a big squall line because they're a lot less likely to produce a really strong tornado like any of the several tornados from this outbreak
@@MultiMachinegunner nah width doesn't necessarily correspond to strength. Some of the strongest tornados are only a few hundred feet while there have been mile wide tornados barely capable of EF2 damage. This one was very likely capable of EF4 and MAYBE EF5 damage but fortunately Omaha wasn't hit anywhere near as hard as it could have been

Thanks for the explanation. The military got even weirder _after_ I left? "Man Love Thursdays." Gotta be influenced by the kiddie-freak Kuwaiti pop music, little boys singing about their adult male lover. @@omarrp14 They will have relations with men and boys. Much like the catholic churches thinking back in the day a young boy is thought to be pure and without sin. Then to add to the problem you have a bunch of men growing up in this type of life and thusly see no problem with perpetuating the abuse. The thought of "I went through it, and I turned out alright." is rampant, so even with people that wouldn't gravitate toward children will do so because it's what they know.
funny thing, the leo2a6 they have is ANCIENT at this point to the 2a7v, 2a8 and the panther(new one). Let them have it, we don’t need it. It will be outdated even more when German engineers get access to the new military budget. Still better than T-14 Armata.
The only platforms the T-14 threatens are the ones active when the first gen Abrams rolled off the line any models after that one will pretty much laugh at it. Which means they are about 30 years behind in the tank arms race.
Plus due to the circumstances tanks are being used more as high mobility artillery rather than direct combat, so they're more than enough. Only if air superiority could be achieved, more advanced tanks would make sense.
@@moteroargentino7944 F16s confirmed are on the way to Ukraine. With SEAD capabilities being superior to what both sides have right now, that means Ukraine might get the skies cleared up again
@@Darqshadow sead isn't easy, its not just launching agm 88 missiles at s400 sites, mig 29s can do that. air defense batteries are vert heavily defended, wacth hypops beating the s400 video to see why. Ooh, i love these things, git half a dozen on my shirt right now. One of my favorites is from the rocket crowd tho. Rapid Unplanned/Unscheduled Disassembly (It blew up). Or Lithobraking (it crashed into the ground... and stopped!)
I was curious about the F35 deal that had been mentioned, and found this from a few articles: it should be noted that an UAE official said and I quote "The United States remains the UAE's PREFERRED provider for advanced defense requirements and discussions for the F-35 may be re-opened in the future." the official also added that there were discussions to "address mutual defense security conditions for the acquisition". So, even when working in close proximity to China, people prefer the US when it comes to equipment. You gotta love that name brand recognition.
Didn't get the Thursday joke, sadly, but the canard joke had me rolling on the ground. Also loved that Ay ya! Reminds me of Uncle from Jackie Chan's Adventures.

@LegendaryCollektor it's known as Man Love Thursday. According to some Imam, Allah is too busy to notice men having gay sex on Thursdays, so it turns into Brokeback Mountain in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Not joking, its a thing. 🤣

Not exactly related, but cool fact about Tyrannosaurus Rex is that it could one arm curl about 400-450 lbs. per arm. Still doesn't mean that the Chinese aircraft isn't as useless as an abelisaurid's arms in a fight (yes they are even smaller than tyrannosaur arms in proportion to their bodies).
@haven_lady675 Uncle did that a lot in Jackie Chan Adventures which I think it was due to due Cantonese Accent. Not sure if Liu Kim did the same thing or had the same accent.
