Danny Green is one of the few remaining trap fishers still operating out of Coffs Harbour. Costs and regulations have forced thousands of professional fishers out of the industry but for Danny the thrill of the catch is a childhood dream come true.

I spent 22 years commercial fishing with my father... I still love to fish!
@mykemyers6488

In my opinion this is some of the most respectable commercial fishing you can do. You are not killing your bycatch, you are not killing undersized fish. You are able to bring everything up alive and healthy sort through it and return what is to small or unwanted back to the ocean unharmed. In no way should this be comparable to people that long line or net fish because of the high kill rates that come with those methods.

Did you see how long it took to measure them? Fish don’t breathe air
@BradGryphonn
@BradGryphonn 2 года назад
The only real issue with any 'deep' fishing is the swim bladder issue. Fish brought from depths quickly don't get time to adjust their swim bladder and in most cases, even if the fish is thrown back, it will still die. Live coral trout fisherman carry a bladder punch that is used to release air from the fish immediately after being caught, saving them from certain death.
@BradGryphonn
@BradGryphonn 2 года назад
@@alastairwilliams9550 You would be surprised how long a fish can last out of water. It's still not good for them but a few minutes out of water isn't fatal.
@kaladin8374

Pulling them up 90m kills them
@mykemyers6488
@mykemyers6488 2 года назад
@@BradGryphonn They make a tool that is basically a big hypodermic needle it'll that is used to do something called venting a fish. Where you simply poke a hole in it release the air from the swim bladder and it's able to swim down no problem and has a high survival rate. You can order this tool online for a few dollars.

Shame about the negative comments. I'm a fisherman here in the UK 🇬🇧 and use traps for lobsters 🦞 and crabs 🦀 and nets for fish, bit of rod and line for fun.Nets if rigged right don't catch many undersized or unwanted fish,Joe public need to be made aware of this

Great way of fishing. Almost zero lactic acid buildup like all line/net caught fish. They are 100% fresh the second they leave the water. My partner was born in Gore🍺🍺

They should keep the heads either use them for bait or fish meal. Tossing them overboard is a waste of potential money.

Being so deep do you think the fish that are undersized and let go make it back to the bottom?
@CRZ38L
@CRZ38L 2 года назад
The depths aren't actually that deep compared to other types of deep sea fishing, and Sanpper don't suffer from barotrauma so the released fish should be fine, providing they don't get preyed upon on the way back down.

Snapper and most fish can survive out of water for several minutes before their condition deteriorates. This does no harm to them and once they return to the water they swim off just as healthy as before.

exploitation and greed. no wonder no fish left in sydney, melbourne and adelaide
@walomeister5632
@walomeister5632 3 года назад
@K Andreis your 100% right. trapping is the most sustainable way to catch fish as the traps are fabricated in a way where only the desired sized fish gets trapped. It’s the things like weighted bottom trawling that is emptying the oceans let alone destroying the sea-bed.

@DHCETC spearing is awesome.i used to do it alot. But for supplying the fish market. They need alot of fish. Fish traps would be the best as you can let Go what's to small or the wrong species. We might have to start farming alot more fish species in the future. I've built aquiponics systems up for growing Barra and vegetables and fruits at the same time. But I still love diving. Even just for exploring and relaxing.👍
