Treasure Planet: An Unlucky Gem⎮A Disney Discussion

There are some movies that are all round decent motion pictures.... with good character building, and story.... visuals and score... that are enjoyable cinematic experiences.... but ultimately came at the worst possible time... and therefore failed. I feel like Treasure Planet is one of those films.... it is not bad...(not a perfect film either, if i'm being realistic)... but it has faded into obscurity harder than almost any other Disney film, and was one of their biggest financial failures ever. And I truly think it deserves more.

I enjoyed this movie as a teenager but didn’t really take it as something special. Only with recent revival of it through video reviews and essays I realised what a gem it was. People will be coming back to it for years. Also, fun fact, Captain Amelia really reminded me of my dance teacher back in the day.

I do Love Treasure Planet It is one of the best Disney movies made till date I Love re-watching it from time to time, maybe once a year I do feel bed for the writers behind the movie, they fought hard to make it, yet it flopped due to bad timing. They even had a sequel in mind... I do like how it gets more and more recognised in the Last few years and getting the respect it deserves

The relationship between Jim and John Silva is amazingly executed in this movie. When I'm asked about my favorite Disney movie, I always say that it's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but Treasure Planet comes close too. I want more people to see those 2 films

I love this movie its absolutely gorgeous, on my first watch i was like 13 and understood the father son dynamic cause like me I also had a dad who left so this movie was my comfort for many yrs and the reason for why I went into animation it was so visually unique for its time and had so much potential to be a big hit but I'm happy to see yrs later that its getting the love it deserves

My favorite movie, I loved the idea of a book that could use holograms, I was super into the space theme. Idk if it's good or bad that they didn't make a sequel, cuz it could become a Shrek 2 or a Mulan 2.

I love this comic retro Sci-Fi style they used, same thing why I love Wildstar and am looking forward to Strange World. Most people go for realistic, but if I wanted realism I wouldn't be watching fantasy.

Yeah a part of the script released for Treasure Planet || and it’s basically: Make Jim a bad boy again (aka take away everything he learned from the first film), give him a good girl love interest (she acts and looks like captain Amelia, only difference is that she was Jim’s age) and make him more like silver. There was literally a scene when Jim’s love interest over hears Jim and silver planning something without her, HMMM SOUNDS FAMILIAR HUH The thing we were really robbed of is the Disneyland ride, could you image a Treasure Planet ride? That would be so epic rip

I loved this movie as a kid and even now. I found the blob thing adorable. This movie is underrated but seems to be getting some more praise because everyone I have met who saw it loved it. Still underrated though. This is one of the movies I have nostalgia for and will always have a special place in my heart.

i loved this movie as a kid. I heard that Disney went out of their way to make this movie fail. Honestly Disney would do shit like that.

Most famous Disney films are musicals with a fantasy setting so every time I see one of their movies that wasn't sucessful, I think "hmm, had this been a musical with a fantasy setting, this probably would be talked about everywhere."

I recently rewatched Treasure Planet and I am glad that while most people lose their joy in these things, I appreciate animation even more now than I did as a child. As a kid you don't question much and don't think about anything for too long, but as an adult I like the characters and storywriting even more.

Huh. I don't remember much advertising for this film, which was why I thought it bombed. Also that it was competing against Finding Nemo. It's strange to think there was a time that pixar was favoured by disney with it's own animation studio being pushed aside but now it's like the other way round.

Treasure Planets marketing was actually horrible, and intentional. Long story short, the head honcho at Disney had been gunning to get rid of 2D animation for a while, and Treasure Planet was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some of the trailers showed none of the plot at all, while other trailers spoiled the whole movie (aka, confirmed silver was a pirate and that the whole crew was too, introduced Ben who we aren’t supposed know about and SHOWS THEIR GREAT ESCAPE AT THE END OF THE MOVIE.) So when the movie inevitably failed, they had a reason to fully cut 2D animation, finishing the two other 2D animated films that where already in progress, and only tried it twice again for princess and the frog and a Winnie the Pooh movie, neither of which were big commercial successes. Also Hercules only exists because the directors needed to make one more successful movie and they made a deal to finally make Treasure Planet after literally two decades of asking. Also also captain Amelia was originally designed with the tentacle hair, which was obviously cut and inspired the pirates of the carabean movies.

I absolutely love Treasure Planet! I think peoples my age who grew up watching the film have a lot more nostalgia and good things to say about the movie. I took a history of animation class and my professor was pleasantly surprised that the class all loved this movie. I also think with the lack of 2D films from Disney nowadays, people are looking back at Disney’s early 2000s movies more fondly.

My favorite movie, alongside Princess Bride. It’s integration of 2d and 3d animations is still impressive, and the animation itself holds up much better than many movies from around that time. It deserves much better.

It really is a shame with what happened with treasure planet like the timing and everything I personally loved the movie as a kid and can still enjoy it to this day and the song "I'm still here" is still one of my favorite disney songs to this day I wish it more love than it got but as you said its a unlucky gem which is really a shame

Movie gives off Star Wars vibes. Aliens, humans and robots all interacting in space. Jim’s speeder scene at the start reminds me of a young Anakin in the pod racer on Tattooine.

I actually think it's a really good movie. certainly better than most the tripe that comes out now where you just forget it in a month and Jim and silver have one of the most dynamic relationships in any animated movie I've ever seen.

To be completely honest I never really heard of Treasure Planet untill I saw some old Disney fanmade music videos and I was curious what this movie is about and after watching some good reviews of it I found it to be pretty good as well and I agree with anyone who says it's underrated, because it is, plus Jim has now become my second cartoon crush. And it kinda saddens me how a good movie or show is good but it doesn't get advertised well enough or people just don't let it slip past them without seeing how good it really is, much like this show called Eyewitness which y'all should totally check out, and if I can find one streaming service that Treasure Planet is on? Then by golly I'm gonna watch because I wanna see what it's good yet seriously underrated.

In my eyes, the true villain of this movie was Ben, for ruining an otherwise amazing film 💀 (even if it was just the last half)

I recently watched this movie for the first time and was kinda dissapointed. I loved the setting and characters, but I went in with different expectations. The focus was way too much on the Father son dynamic that on the epic adventure. And like you said, the pacing was weird. But it is still a good movie. I am sure as a kid I would be obsessed with it, but now i see the problems.

I've heard of this film a couple times before, as an example of some good writing with I believe twist villains(?)-can't recall exactly- and a few other times, but I haven't actually seen it. It looks absolutely gorgeous though, and I definitely need to get around to watching it. Just need to figure out *where* to watch it.
@Mediados
@Mediados 2 года назад
Twist villain isn't the right word here, since John Silver was more like a twist hero. He started as a villain but became more and more empathic throughout the story.

We had some of the "better" Disney and Pixar classics like Tarzan and Toy Story, but when it came to those oddly under sold gems like Treasure Planet, The Iron Giant, Titan A.E, and Atlantis, I'd openly tell my parents how much I enjoyed them and that they should buy them for us to watch all the time, when we please, and they'd be like- "Nah. We'll just hire it next weekend and keep hiring it a couple of times after and then never again".
@captianbacon
@captianbacon Год назад
Treasure planet is the most visually appealing thing tht Disney has ever made besides mabey nightmare be4 Christmas (but im weak for claymation so it's not a fair comparison.) But if you wanna compare this movie to another Disney movie that used the same kinda effects. It's strictly better in every way then Tarzan. Better story better charecters and more fun. It feels like Aladdin and has the most beautiful visuals in animation charming charecters and a good story and is one of the best Disney movies of all time up there with Aladdin Hercules black cauldron and Atlantis

I did enjoy this film, but I did realise that it didn't quite match the standard I would expect from "The House of Mouse". That said, I wouldn't have classed it on the "bomb" status… Disney dropped the ball to release it against Harry Potter. That franchise juggernaut would flatten anything in its path. … I did find the "Ben" character a bit annoying even if his screen time was "limited".
@Mediados
@Mediados 2 года назад
They did it on purpose, surely. A good reason to go out and say "Oh well looks like people don't like 2D anymore" and go full 3D animation. Treasure Planet was their sacrificial lamb.
