For 2022 the new Trek Top Fuel takes its feet out of the cross country camp and firmly plants them in the trail bike camp! In 2004 the Top Fuel was a pure and dedicated cross-country race bike, and it returned in 2015 as a top XC bike - reimagined. In 2019 it developed into a more capable bike with light trail applications, bumping up from a 100mm platform to 115mm with a 120mm fork. Now with 2022 around the corner we see the Top Fuel move over into the ever popular and growing short travel trail bike market.
There's lots to go into, but Ben breaks it down in his review. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss our latest videos!

Can you retro fit the Knock Bloc 2.0 to previous models of the Top Fuel. It’s about the only thing I don’t like about my 2020 model?

Why there is no remote lockout? that closed the gap between Supercaliber and FuelEx.

Seems like it would be a nice complement to my Slash for lighter-duty days. I find the weight on the high side for what it is though.
@Australianmountainbike
@Australianmountainbike 2 года назад
Funnily enough our tester Ben bought a Slash after reviewing it last year, and has the previous Top Fuel, and is considering buying one of the new ones as they do complement each other. Weight - agreed. But most bikes as stock aren't super light. Consider that this bike has almost the same build kit for wheels/cockpit/dropper etc as a Slash...

@@Australianmountainbike hesitating between 9,7 and 9,8: based on your comments, seems like a 9,7 with upgrades to lighter wheels, crank and handlebar could be more interesting then a 9.8... any thoughts? Have you tried the rhythm fork versus SID?

@@fatbikedaddy8644 I have last years 9.7. I'm looking at upgrading wheels fork bars and drivetrain. My recommendation is get the lightest one you can buy. It's way cheaper than trying to upgrade later

What was going on with the rear wheel at 7.18 ?

skipping and a bit of flex under load. It's the norm for sure. Watch any slow mo DH footage and you'll see a bit of rear wheel dancing.

So is this pushing the fuel ex into the enduro space?
@lucasblack7333
@lucasblack7333 2 года назад
The fuel ex will still be a trail bike but the geo is pushing heavy trail/enduro. Interesting to see where it will go in the future though
@shaun1900

interesting bikes but substantially heavier than the Spur, Oiz, Revolver, Ranger etc...... More Trail bike "lite" than downcountry as you have said - others have tried to shove it into the DC bucket.

People are realizing there's no penalty and lots of benefits to adding an inch or so to the wheelbase and relaxing the steering. A stable bike is a fast bike! And a slightly longer wb is not going to affect your ability to go around a corner!
@Australianmountainbike
@Australianmountainbike 2 года назад
So true! Trek have even extended the wheelbase on their gravel bikes, and they hug off camber corners even with a much smaller tyre footprint than a MTB. Geometry does a lot and the small adjustments on the Top Fuel have made a big difference.
@siyz250
@siyz250 2 года назад
What you say is true. But the way Trek are going with this and most of their bikes (as are most manufacturers) means someone like me who wants to get into racing, owns (21 Fuel EX 7) and loves Trek has to choose between a Supercalibre and a Top Fuel. No one on earth can afford a Supercalibre, so it has to be a Top Fuel. Unfortunately this bike is further away from a race bike now than it has ever been. More weight to carry, ever growing suspension travel and down hill frame geometry. Maybe l start looking at another brand...

Weird to me that the Fuel EX8 with 130 / 140mm travel size M is 30.56 lb / 13.86 kg, while the Top Fuel 8, 120 / 120mm travel size M is heavier, 31.44 lbs / 14.26 kg. Is that just the fat downtube for the snack box? I'd rather stick to my longer travel, lighter weight Fuel EX thanks. 2021 Top fuel 8 was lighter than both, I believe size M 30.12 lbs / 13.66 kg
@Australianmountainbike
@Australianmountainbike 2 года назад
It probably comes down to the part specs and suspension as well, which will usually have more impact than a few hundred grams. Our tester did wonder what the new Top Fuel meant for the Fuel EX, as it the Top Fuel is so capable and pedals even better than the last one. A few features like the frame storage and increased turn radius of the KnockBlock 2.0, plus the threaded BB may add up for riders looking at the two bikes. All that said, the Fuel EX platform has to be one of the most versatile mountain bikes out there - which is probably why we have one on test for our next issue. The Top Fuel just tends to pedal a bit better when you're demanding more performance out of a bike.

And the Top fuel8 2022 has a light weight Sid fork and 2.4 tires.The Fuel ex 8 has a 140mm fork and 2.6 tires and still is lighter.
