This is a very thorough description of what to do, how to do it, and what to watch out for. Mike is at the tail end of rebuilding his Pontiac 400, which is now a Butler Performance 467, because a Roller Lifter Broke! (see link below).

Use an old slip yoke, holds in the fluid and you can use it to align the splines

Monty, your videos have been SO helpful. I'm putting the finishing touches on a TKX, hydraulic clutch swap in my '86 C10 Chevy, because of you, I've known what NOT to do during my project, LOL. I'm only teasing you, thank you for putting these videos together, they have helped my tremendously.

Really nice and clean job ..but my recomendation is always lubricate the imput shaft or the driveshaft to easy go in and also not damage any seal

Great video, but I didn't watch the whole thing. Can you use the stock cross member with a TKX, if not what brand did you use?

Yup, the stock brace will work, but you have to shim it higher than the Muncie. I found out the hard way, after I installed my headers. have fun!

I also have a question about the Tremec install and driveline angles. I installed a TKO in a 66 El Camino, and also had header and driveline angle problems due to the lower transmission. I have raised the transmission as much as I can given the tunnel mods I did and clearance between the driveshaft and floor, and got my header clearance to 3.5", which seems acceptable. However, the U-joint angle at the transmission is about 4.5 deg, creating driveline vibration problems. So I compensated with the adjustable rear-end upper control arm to make the pinion angle about the same, which fixed the driveline vibrations, but creates a non-horizontal pinion angle. It looks like the only way to fix this is to get a CV joint in the driveshaft, or get a better fitting transmission. Did you measure the driveline angles with the TKO and/OR TKX? Did you have driveline vibration problems with the TKO?

Great question... My driveline angles are NOT ideal, but I also don't have any issues. That said, if you're saying the trans is pointed down 4.5 degrees, and the rear end is pointed up 4.5 degrees, you're good. :) Hope that helps!

Did you end up using the neutral safety switch? I’m installing a TKX and saw something on American PowerTrain that you have to use a relay because the switch on the trans can’t have have 12 volts constant. Didn’t make sense to me since the purple wire would only have 12 volts at cranking.

Great question! I did not, purely because my car has the safety switch built into the clutch pedal. But, to your point, there is a decent amount of current running through that purple wire at start up, so if the TKX doesn't have a big enough circuit, I would add a relay as suggested. Hope that helps!

How did you wire up to the reverse lockout. On my 69 Camaro the Muncie had a switch at the trans and the switch on the column. Do I wire both in or just the one on the column?

Great Question Tommy! I honestly didn't hook mine up... I ran the wires, should I want to implement some sort of kill switch. Based on memory, I believe the switch is Normally OPEN. So, if you ran your ignition switch to it, and back... the car won't start unless you're in reverse. Let us know what you figure out! Thanks !

Thanks Daniel! Life's too short not to have fun, eh? Glad you're picking up on what I'm puttin down. Ha, ha... anyway, yeah, I have an incredibly supportive wife, and my son is usually in the garage with me working on his legos. I'm very lucky in that regard. My rear is still the stock 10 bolt. I did upgrade the bearing caps. But, the next rearend would probably be a Moser 9". Thanks for the comment and see you soon!

Your Tremec uses ATF? I bought mine from SST and they recommended gear oil.

Yup, use Dexcon ATF for bbreak in. Not to worry, it's in the instructions. ;)

Hey Mike I chimed in on dowel pins removal pass side was easy all we did was knock it out with hole other side driver side couldnt do that had do your socket trick. Ok we trying get trans up but real hard pushing on the gm slave throw out bearing as there a spring have push in which we did our of car the get measurements. So did you have to push on trans alot to push in throw out bearing. Thanks Tim

Hey Tim, glad my trick worked for you... as for the slave, it does NOT take a lot of force. It sounds like you're not lined up with your pilot bearing. I ran into the same problem with my twin disc, and had to get a steel clutch alignment tool. Then it went in super smooth. Let us know how you fixed it...

@@FastMonty well Mike we got trans up my twin was helping out too he has a 69 gto same colors as yours what my son notice was trans had bit angle on it we got it straight moved crank a little and wham it went it 👍. Now we started bleeding system and of course the remote bleeder fitting leaking where connected now we need see how we can tighten it or may need pull trans back some so can get hand it there pull fitting off and see what up with it. Still a fun project both son yes some bad words fly at times lol

@@timm2891 That's awesome... yeah, pretty critical it's lined up before going in. Ha, ha... I too had a loose fitting on the slave cylinder. I bought a crows foot, and was able to tighten it with an 8" long 3/8" drive extension. Keep in mind that fitting is metric. Yeah, words fly around my garage too... worse than golf.

What side of the shifter did you mount the hurst stick to? Driver or passenger?

Driver's side, as I figured Reverse is down and to the right, which would probably interfere with my center console if I mounted it on the passenger side. It worked. Ha, ha... Have fun!

Sorry to hear about the fitment issues. Would some Ram Air exhaust manifolds be enough for your engine to breath?

Yeah, no worries... it all works out in the end. Ram Air manifolds are better than standard manifolds, but don't flow as good as full length headers. Thanks for the comment!

Was this the factory bellhousing ? I thought a TKO would fit in a factory bellhousing and use the factory throw out bearing and clutch system .

It's a brand new factory bell housing... and yes, the TKO/TKX will work with the factory manual clutch and throw out bearing. I elected to upgrade to hydraulic.

Concerning the difference in height of the tail shaft mount, did you measure the difference between the old 4 speed and the TKO? Tremec's diagram shows the distance from the centerline of the transmission shaft to the mount surface to be 2.2". I had two different 4 speeds in my 65 442 over the years and measured both, but they are different. Mine were both BW T-10's. Can you measure that distance on your old 4 speed to give me an idea if I am in the ball park on a shim to add to mine. I am seeing 2.75" on one box and 2.83" on the other. I have not been able to find a dimension for that mount to centerline distance published anywhere for the BW T-10. Thanks for the help. I would have missed this issue also if not for you video!!

Great question, and yes, I wish I knew about the height difference, before I cut up my tunnel... oh well, I now have the TKX, so I now have more room to raise it! Anyway, I'll try and remember to grab that measurement. My Muncie is buried in other stuff, which does need to be moved. The next trick is I need to remember to do it. Ha, ha... thanks for watching!

Hey Bill... running 3:55 gears, with a 26.6" tire... should do 75MPH at 2100 rpm ish. Nice. :)

What made you decide on 5 speed versus going with a Magnum 6 speed?

Good question Scott. A few reasons...one, it costs more. Two, based on my research, my car would need a full transmission tunnel replacement. Where the TKO had the possibility if no tunnel mods. Lastly, my fifth gear is the same as a Magnums 6th gear. So, I went the TKO 600 route. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment!

Were trans tail-shaft & pinion parallel , or were you just worried about fitment?

Nope, They're not parallel, which I suspected would happen, due to the pinion angle pointing slightly down, because my rear end is so low. Still contemplating raising the rear a bit, so I can improve the pinion angle. (I have adjustable upper control arms, so it's super easy to do)
