My timeless pieces: - turtlenecks - boyfriend style button up shirts - oversized cardigan - converse

The claw clips trend is weird and 100% agree with you. I remember as a child thinking how it’s typically an old lady style because I swear, every mom and grandma had one. I still see moms who aren’t trendy and couldn’t care more for fashion do the little flip up with a claw clip because they’ve been doing that forever. I remember a time when that was even seen as the “lazy mom hairstyle” and now it’s so aggressively trendy. So yeah, I don’t think claw clips are trendy, they’re a thing of forever
@maijalindy4495

Simply put, claw clips are one of the best and cutest options for putting your hair up. Hair ties can feel too tight and damage your hair 🤷🏻‍♀️
@DebbieRuiz
@DebbieRuiz Год назад
The claw clips are also a very cultural thing. Latinas (but my experience are mainly with Cubans since that’s what I am) have been wearing those for ages. In Cuba all the girl wear a claw clip with big gold hoops and a lot gold jewelry. It’s just a casual hairstyle to keep your hair off your neck because of the heat. So I agree, this has never been a trend or even trendy at that.

I also think the opposite can happen where you will not wear something that was on trend when you were younger because you associate it with your younger self. I for one have a hard time liking brown boots because it was all the rage in high school. My mom has the same thing with oversized sweaters, I wear it all the time but she hates it because when she was younger it was a ‘trend’, while I see it as just an oversized sweater. I don’t know if this makes sense but I feel if you experienced something as a trend you will have a hard time to see it as something timeless later on. Loved this little sit down ❤️

the best way I can describe it is that “timeless” items don’t have to be “in style” all the time. all it means is that they’re stylish enough to COME BACK around. “Trendy” items are the ones that pop up in these “eras” that don’t have the capacity to come back around in the cyclical fashion cycle. for example: The Indie Grunge Sleaze era is coming back. That means tights and shorts, boots, slouchy shirts, flannel, plaid etc… items that are TIMELESS but aren’t currently in style. BUT the items that were “trendy” back then during that era were the galaxy print, upsidown cross stuff, THOSE heeled studded booties…. those weren’t timeless but trendy and therefore won’t come back around during the resurgence.

Another controversial opinion: I can’t with the ballet flats. It was something I wore when I was a child in 2005-2011 and I just associate it with like being a catholic girl going to church with my leggins. I can’t. Also they are not comfortable if you are walking all day, they are way too flat and have zero arch support. So your feet are going to hurt.
@kamillebest5152
@kamillebest5152 Год назад
Absolutely! I’m convinced that the foot issues I have now are from running all over NYC back in the mid 2000s, in my little green ballet flats. I wasn’t even considering arch support at that time 😩

you're so right about the blazer thing. I still think its ridiculous to wear a blazer with sweat pants. Jeans, yeah, but not sweatpants. Also, the minimalist aesthetic, as timeless as people claim it is is a trend. The slacks, the masculine cuts, the button ups, the 4 color wardrobe, its all a trend.

i remember so much of my mom's stuff, i never 'got' as a child. like i just couldn't figure claw clips out. granted, my uniform of choice was a tunic with capri leggings, so i wasnt what you would call a 2000s fashion icon. now i wear so much of my mom's old stuff, and since i grew my hair out i started wearing her claw clips. those 2000s trends may seem trendy and vapid to some, but to me it feels timeless, because it makes me feel connected to my mother, my heritage, and my identity. there's always a story behind what im wearing, and because of that, i could never cringe on myself looking back
@YasmineSiagian
@YasmineSiagian Год назад
same! before the trend I would always steal my mom's one claw clip, and eventually I just kept it with my stuff bc she never wore it anymore. I lost that one after wearing it all the time and bought a couple newer ones but they just weren't the same and I didn't wear them as often even though they were on trend at the time

I so agree with the blazers! I’m a young millennial and have never felt comfortable with blazers as casual wear so they’ve never been “timeless” for me. Maybe it’s the vibe I give off but they look too formal on me. Your point about blazers being the equivalent of business casual of 2012 rings so true lol

As a gen z (and maybe it has to do with my law studies) I disagree! It’s funny how we have different opinions but that’s the beauty of it. A blazer with jeans/pants/skirts and a basic top is such a basic for fall and spring. It’s a transitional piece that’s practical enough compared to a trench coat
@sarahrodes3177
@sarahrodes3177 Год назад
@@carinekaraki3735 So interesting! I really don’t gravitate to it! My transitional go-tos are shackets- I have a Levi’s one and a dark brown corduroy- or a chunky cardigan. I like the longer length jackets because I wear a lot of flares and midi skirts with platforms.

Maybe it's due to your Kibbe type... I know that Kibbe serves just as guidelines, but there are many types (mainly Romantics and Gamines) that don't really suit blazers as casual wear. In my case, because I'm a Soft Gamine, whenever I wear a blazer I look like a child who has borrowed her mom's workwear, and I only really suit cropped fitted blazers.

As an elderly millenial, almost Gen Xer, you are soooo insightful in my view. Of course Emma C is interesting because of the breadth of her influence, but you really understand the nuance of the trend cycle. Your whole breakdown of the white tee and jeans is completely on pointe. That’s why I follow you! Fashion girlies are not helpful in terms of understanding how to bridge timelessness and current fashion/street style.

I completely agree! I think the only thing that is "timeless" is having a strong sense of personal style. I have a lot of pieces in my wardrobe that are "timeless" but the way I've styled them over the years has changed depending on trends so my wardrobe doesn't fall into the trap of being "outdated." Even when I buy pieces wanting to participate in trends I really think about if it's a piece I'll wear for years and if naturally integrates in my wardrobe or if it's just something I'd wear for the trend.

I have a weird relationship with cargo pants and all the waterproof jackets and pants and all that stuff. I’m a geologist, so all that kind of cargo and functional outerwear and hiking shoes is what I wear on my field trips lmao I can’t imagine wearing it for going out? I just associate it with work and being sweaty and dirty? I don’t associate it with fashion? It has been really weird seeing everyone wearing this sort of clothing, because it’s like if all of a sudden your mcdonald’s uniform were to be trendy

I don't like to minimize or dismiss the viewpoints and opinions of younger people because I believe that happens too often and can be discriminatory... however, I think experience can really benefit an individual's understanding of concepts that are related to time. It's crazy how much your perspective will change when you experience a full 20-year trend cycle from start to finish. My perspective will probably develop further as time goes on. You just start to see which pieces people can continuously wear outside the trend cycle and still look fashionable or chic or whatever regardless of age or background. You also see which "timeless" classic pieces are expanded on as a fashion concept for shorter cycles (like different cuts of jeans, different cuts of white t-shirts, different cuts of trousers). It's the median or "classic" cuts and styles that are typically viewed as timeless. Like, the baggy suits and blazers popular in the 90's and the super fitted suits and cropped blazers of the 2000s/2010s were both trendy but a classic/moderate cut could have been worn in either decade without looking dated. Also, although I don't think fashion needs to be age-specific, fashion that is popular with young people (like teen and 20's) looks a lot different than the style development of people 30+. Personal style developed with unique pieces, regardless of the trend cycles, can look very timeless. So I think what I'm trying to say is that timeless as a fashion concept makes less sense for someone in their early 20's but might begin to develop as you age. Also, what is considered "timeless" will change over time but much, much, much slower than even the longer trend cycles. I do hope in the coming decades, "timelessness" fashion, as understood by the broader media, begins to look a little less white and classist.

I'm 34 years old and love your channel. I like to explore and experiment with fashion and see what's popular now rather than holding on tight to the styles that were trendy when millennials were younger. That said, I definitely agree with you that items that are "timeless" are always being modified in some form throughout time. Everything trending now has at some point been trendy before in my lifetime, such as blazers, claw clips, cargo pants, ballet flats and Sambas (my brother wore those all through high school and he's Gen X). And long necklaces were trendy when I was in college, so hearing you mention long necklaces coming into style was a bit triggering. 😂

I’m only a little ways in but so glad u brought up how the style and cut of anything kinda “gives it away”, I remember the first time I watched an episode of community and I had been under the impression that it was a newer show, but the clothes (which certainly weren’t excessively trendy or dated) gave it away immediately and I was like “oh, is this show from the late 2000s? The clothes look like it is” and my dad was like ?? there rly is nothing that’s wholly timeless

Totally agree with the idea that timelessness is subjective! Personally i love keeping an eye on trends but i used to get carried away with them and buy things because they looked cute/trendy and not necessarily because i felt good/comfortable wearing them. Often by the time i would work up the courage to try something new, it would soon become old news. I’ve now taken the approach of just appreciating from afar and trying to make the pieces that i already own and love work in different ways. Side note: hope you’re doing well!!

THANK YOU! I commented this on your last video about this topic and was met with some suggestions of pieces that were truly timeless (that I disagreed with - no, a trench coat isn't a truly timeless piece, because different versions of it come back in style; they were seen as stuffy and old at a point in time). ive been into 90s y2k since 2012-2013 tumblr, my style has evolved and i dress completely different, but when i think about it the way i dress now is how i dreamed of dressing at 13-14. for me i feel its different because my style has always been influenced by music and ive always liked late 90s early 00s music and culture since over 10 years ago, so for me that style is my basic staple even if i experiment with adding in different eras or styles. however, even then there are so many subgenres of fashion in that time period, i find myself always going back to a casual cargo cyber aesthetic after i dive too deep into a new trend. time and time again since i was a kid i always go back to that or keep an element of that style in me.

I feel like converse have been the only truly timeless item. I wore them in middle, high school and still wear them. My mom grew up with them and people still wear them today. I also don’t mean the newer styles either like platforms. If any of the girls in the outfits she showed had on converse, most people wouldn’t look twice. People still wear regular black high tops and low tops and I don’t really think they ever went out of style.

This trendy vs timeless topic makes my head hurt a little. But I think that as the years go on, you figure out what pieces you like best (maybe bc they are flattering, but maybe not!)...you like them bc you feel like yourself in them. And one season if something is not trendy, maybe I won't wear it as much, but I'll keep it anyway. And if something else is suddenly deemed as trendy I'll say, Oh great, I've already got that, I think I'll wear that more often. In short, you have a selection of things to wear, but you rotate around what you wear most...IF you even care. One thing I've always hated is when someone advises, "if you haven't worn 'x' in 6 months, give it away." If I love it, I'm going to keep it. It prevents me from buying too much stuff. If I buy something better that can replace it, then I give it away.

You can argue timeless is what can be taken out of context and not associated with a specific time or place, but ultimately why and how someone wears the item has greater weight.

blazers are absolutely NOT timeless,,, the only reason they’re popular right now is because we’re basically in a pop culture parallel to the 80s (aka a lot of corporate brainwashing, all cartoons and movies either remakes or based on products that already exist, and of course experimental/synth music). i can’t help but just see every single blazer “trendy” outfit as an extremely cheap and dated 80s look when the “working woman” was all the rage. and with cargos!?!? i’ve been wearing them for SOOOO many years and i’ve seen so many people who vehemently hated on cargo pants/shorts through those years wearing them now just because they’re trendy. what is timeless is SO subjective because i know the people who hated on cargos a few years ago will stop wearing them, but i definitely won’t because they’re so comfy and just a more detailed and interesting pair of pants to me. i’m so glad you made this vid because this whole concept of trendy vs timeless has bothered me because it’s just another iteration of the “minimalists” telling people to throw away everything they own and buy a leather moto jacket and a white t shirt to be set for life. EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT STYLE !!!!!!!!! cardigans are MY timeless outerwear, if yours is a blazer, that’s fine, but it’s still not objective.

i think the blazer im seeing more is 90s inspired rather than 80s. pop culture atm is 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, all at the same time everyone is doing some version of one of those or many mixed together. radio is more 80s leaning rn i will say but only reallly in US.

They’re cute! Of course they’re not timeless but they’ll always come back

There is a handful of actually timeless clothing pieces that have lasted over several decades: a biker jacket, a bomber jacket, a trench, Chuck Taylors, Dr. Martens

‘98 baby here, as a child, I never liked blazers, or anything that had like shoulder pads lol. And now to see that it’s something people “fit” into their style, calling it an essential to have in one’s wardrobe is weird. When I think of blazers I think office jobs. Why are influencers or even regular people acting like casually wearing blazers is cute or necessary? A blazer on with only a bra/ crop top underneath??? Take it off and put on any other jacket or sweater 😭 Cargos being dressed up with a nice top and heels is also cringe to me.

Idk man I'm a '93 baby and so I'm about to be 30. I love the blazers because my mom has tons of them from the 80s and I wear them because they're free and they're vintage. It's wild how late 90s people have such a different view even though I'm only 5 or 6 years older. Lol scrolling through the comments I see a lot of blazer hate from that age range. All good though, different strokes for us older folks I guess lol

My theory is that nothing is timeless, there is always a specific group/subculture/occasion in which specific pieces are worn (ex- blazers at work). What is "trendy" just depends on what specific lifestyle or cultural moment people are focusing on. When there was a huge rise in obesity awareness in america, athleisure became trendy. The job market basically shut down during covid and people start wearing workwear (blazers, trousers, etc..) in every day life. Its this way historically too (ex- womens sufferage in 1919, 1920's womens trends was to be skinny flat chested small almost boyish). Trending just depends on the cultural moment, what subculture, lifestyle, or "core" as the tik tok girlies woukd say, people want to emulate and focus on. The only timless thing is not giving a damn about the historical/cultural moment. Dress for yourself, watch laini's videos, and slay...i guess

I kind of desagree with the think “people who is wearing it” cause is just clothes, that people had their moment

controversial opinion maybe: menswear is timeless (love the video and agree with you also though)

It's too arbitrary. I'm a millennial so I remember blazers styled in the 2010s and like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato wearing them out. Cargo/camo/khaki/army green being skateboarder or Black streetwear style. My mom has worn claw clips my whole life.

claw clips are DEFINITELY trendy. she was too young to remember when they were uncool and cringey

I believe timeless does exist because if not what are staples pieces? Let's try not to have influencers alter our beliefs of fashions just because they are using buzzwords or have lots of clout.

Staple pieces are staple pieces but, like I said in the video, no cut/color/fabric of each staple piece is timeless. There’s too much variation & choices for us now for anything to be. That’s not saying they can’t be worn whenever, but for people who like to keep up with the times, this won’t be the case
