Ah. The age old questing. Crimping vs soldering. Solders will break overtime. But they are better than crimping.
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 3 года назад
My understanding was solder can crack if the wires are loose and always moving around/ bending. But if you secure all your wires nicely it’s reliable

I'd say you need some qualifiers on the advice to solder every connection. It's going to be highly dependent on any support around your solder joint, the vibration it might experience, and the quality of a crimp or soldered joint. Soldered joints are brittle and prone to cracking and breaking under vibration and lateral force and as such should be on pins inside a connector with good strain relief. Soldering does seal the joint well and will be less prone to environmental corrosion effects. One should take care to practice good technique to avoid cold joints or solder wicking up your wire and creating a rigid section. Mid-line splices will see some of the most dynamic vibration and in my opinion should be avoided. A properly crimped connect will be just as strong as a soldered joint while being faster and more consistent in results. You'll rarely ever see soldered joints on a race car or an aircraft. It's true, though, that a good tool costs good money. The best option is either to find out which connectors are most often used on your car and buy the crimping tool for that, or if you're feeling ambitious, standardize on your own connectors as much as possible and again buy the proper crimper. No smashing stuff with pliers or a vise. Properly engineered crimp terminals are designed to have the copper squish just the right amount as the terminal forms around it to have a strong grip and good contact with the specified wire. When you don't crimp properly, you're defeating that design and introducing weakness. I'll also throw in to avoid pre-insulated connectors. Get an uninsulated terminal and some heat shrink. Clearly I spent way too much time on this comment, and of course there are a lot of conditionals and variables to these things that make it hard to give absolutes. Like nearly everything in engineering, the answers are "it depends".
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 3 года назад
This is true. But from my experience soldering has always been way more reliable than crimping. If A car is having electrical issues, the first thing I checked for is those red and blue barrel connecters. I hear what you’re saying though, a properly crimped terminal with heat shrink tubing is a solid option
@thousandleaves
@thousandleaves 3 года назад
@@slightlyMADcustoms Yup. Death to the red and blue insulated crimps. It's extremely difficult to get the designed connection, and even that is assumed with a string of engineering concessions. If those are a person's reference point for crimp connectors, then yes, I'll trust a soldered joint every time. My reference point is in robotics where some of the hand tools for crimped terminals cost $1200usd. I understand that's outside of a typical project build, and that brings us back to "it depends."
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 3 года назад
Oh crazy. Ya my reference to avoiding crimp connectors is just the cheap ones

While I enjoy this content, this is hack city. If anyone actually wants to learn how to wire, I’d suggest HPA horsepower academy. Their channel actually tells you how to do things correctly and covers topics in serious detail.

@@slightlyMADcustoms your loom looks like it’s for home electronics, wrapping regular electrical tape everywhere, soldering connections, is it the wiring even the correct gage with the correct temp rated insulation? Please go watch the HPA electrical wiring videos.
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 3 года назад
The loom is designed for automotive, marine, and aircraft. It’s stronger than your typical plastic loom. All the solder connections are woven together then soldered, then heat shrunk. I understand some people prefer crimping, but soldering has been very reliable in my experience. There’s nothing wrong with using electrical tape to hold the wires together every couple inches. Yes the wire is proper gauge, And insulated properly. This is a pre made fuse block made for automotive application. I agree Horsepower academy would be the place to go. As I stated in the start of the video, we’re showing you how we wire a car. Not saying we’re gods and you need to follow our every move. We’re two young guys building cars, we don’t know everything, but this is what works for us
