Triumph slays. Rik Emmet is such an underated guitar player and singer. His effortless high range. He can hit those highs in his sleep. Seriously, what an amazing talent that guy is! And the drummer has a hell of a voice as well. These guys just kick ass and were never given the recognition they deserved.
The most incredible thing about this is Rik's vocals. Absolutely flawless for a live recording, something that almost never happens. This is one of the great live sets in rock history.
I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate on this one I believe his guitar work with the chords he’s applying while singing and working that volume knob is just amazing
@micaelatomtlund7567 I've heard that about alotbof performances but never this one. This is pure. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm gonna put my money on the reverb making the notes last out longer than he is on the mic.
I met my wife at the US festival i asked her to get on my shoulders we spent the day together 12 hours later i asked her to marry me, to my surprise she said yes, we are still together

I’ve learnt the entire song and i have to say they are the hardest chords in the song, the rest don’t have a stretch like that but can be perceived as difficult. But that’s just me
"What's a nice boy doing in a place like this"...sums up Triumphs appearance on Metal day....they not only stole the show, they were the show. Never Surrender.
I met Rik Emmett in 1988 when they were on our record label ( MCA RECORDS). Rik was such a nice gentleman and I told him that I saw Triumph and Mountain on the same bill in 1985 in East Rutherford, NJ. He sat in my office for about an hour and he signed a Triumph poster for me and personalized it but he wrote it using a cheap bic pen but everyone I show it to said that was really nice of him. He's an excellent and a very underrated guitarist and a great singer too. Thank You Rik Emmett for everything 😎🎸
I was driving into the parking lot on that Sunday, got to hear some of these incredible bands from there. Slept on the hood my car and went on Monday. Saw some amazing bands as well. Wish I would have been there one day earlier - always loved this song. On this same day...Van Halen, Scorpions, Triumph (of course), Judas Priest, Ozzy Osborn, Joe Walsh, Motley Crue. The day I went, opened with Little Steve and the Disciples of Soul, Berlin, Quarterflash, U2, Missing Persons, Pretenders, John Cougar, Stevie Nicks and David Bowie. Yep, U2 was between Quarterflash and Missing Persons. How much would that ticket cost today?
It's a very short list of guys on Rik's level guitar wise and can hit his vocals, and Live - the real test. Randy Jackson of Zebra isn't rik but I'd but him 2nd or 3rd. Frank Marino would be another.
Always loved Triumph. Used to listen to them in HS and college in the 80s. Is it just me or does he and Geddy Lee have amazingly similar voices? Merely coincidence but it always struck me that they were similar.
awwesome memories. i was at that concert. quiet riot, motley crue, triumph, judas priest, scorpions, ozzy, and van halen. we were camped out in Lytle Creek in my friends webers bread truck! friday, saturday, and Sunday, over 200,000 people at glen helen regional park . we were shroomin onfriday rockin out on booze and pot and cocaine saturday and sunday was punk day so we stayed at camp nursing our hangovers.
1982 my mom wouldn't take me to Madison WI to see this show. I was 12 and had to watch my little bro and sis, my mom got a flat on the way up and missed the show. I laughed!!!!
The only other guitarist I've seen kick ass with it and actually swing it around was Steve Clark from Def Leppard. not an easy instrument to handle and Emmett is one of the best ever.
You don't have to be from Ireland to love this song Tre but it helps it never fails to tear me up.Not just for what she's singing about but how she sings it .Dolores is such a loss to the music industry up there with Sinead O'Connor as one of the greatest ever RIP.Thanks for doing this version although as I said they were all fire.🔥That bass and those drums were incredible too what a vibe in the crowd.Oh to have been there 🙏
i have watched most of the us festival footage from 83 and other years as well.I have yet to see any band bring it like TRIUMPH did during this show. One of the best bands to come out of Canada!!!
Man i love these guys, their voices, the songs, the guitar the bass the drums, everythang. Im at aw with how great they are.such such talent. Wish i could have seen this concert in person an met the band.i wish they would start putting out new material an go on the road again, and come to lexington or louisville ky.
Triumph is amazing! Such great music! And, if I may say, Rik is SO talented-- plays so many genres on his guitars, and songwriting too, on top of the magnificent vocals he does.. He still tours, so you can still go hear some awesome Triumph songs, and get some really goood laughs with his fantastic sense of humor! :-)
It is hard to believe all the whole thing came from 3 guys on stage!!! Rik and Gil in their element. This trio trumped very body else on stage that day.
Agreed. Rik and Gil are masters and both mastered the art of playing their instrument and singing at the same time...very few can do that. Dave Meneketti of Y&T and the late Gary Moore comes to mind. Mike Levine perhaps is the silent one that held those two talents together..just a thought.
Lucky you, I can understand why ! Canada is a great wild nation producing some of the most kick ass rock bands ever (Triumph, Steppenwolf, Sum 41, Theory of a deadmann, Nickelback, Three days grace ...)
