So I've made a few changes to the #TriumphSpitfire #ProjectCar just to make it more driveable in terms of safety and cosmetic changes to tidy the old girl up. Little by little we're getting there

Cheers mate, I'm going though the jobs this winter to make the Spitfire somewhat reliable so it can be used in 2020 hassle free

Triumph spitfire is a great car in my opinion, I'll probably buy it one day. Though I do expect it to have rust so I might have to deal with that myself or get it repaired by someone else.

Cheers Master Ed, and you won't be looking back buying one. They are great cars, like road legal go karts, and fun to drive. Rust is the enemy of any British built car, but if you keep of top of them, have them under-sealed and garaged in the winter then there not too bad

I changed my bullets for tex, I think they look better and you can see our of them. Crazy colour of the rocker cover, but hey if it's correct that's great. I really think you should have made another window winder for the other side out of the hose lock range 😂

Haha think I might keep it and stick it to my garage door as a novelty feature or something. As for the rocker cover, I only found out that they were copper bronze colour on the round tail Spitfires a few months back. I did some homework, and some Heralds were like it too. I suppose it was Triumphs way of being different. Like MG's used to have red engines, Morris had green so Triumph had bronze rockers covers on the little Triumphs and some Triumphs had Chrome Rocker covers like on my 69 TR6. That was until BL buggered it up for all makes and you had black engines with painted silver rocker covers on everything

@@SteveDentonClassics That's really interesting, I guess few cars are original these days to see these details. For example it seems that TR6 floors were left in red primer that you can see from the underside, understandable that you never see that now. When I was a kid I remember seeing the late spitfire but never realised the early ones existed until I got into Triumph's the last couple of years
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 4 года назад
I never knew that with the floor pans, but you can see a fair bit of the red oxide primer on my TR6 when you pull the carpets back, mostly as the body on mine has had very little restoration over the years. But underneath when I replaced the chassis I coated the underside with waxoly and underseal. I know what you mean about details being lost over time, it's a big reason why when I rebuild my cars, I try to make them as correct to factory as possible within reason of being reliable with the parts available today and what is practical

Your new mirrors look good steve,,,,, I've got one bullet mirror,,,,it's like looking into a tunnel ,,,a very small diameter tunnel
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 4 года назад
Cheers Doug, if they were a little more convex with the mirror design they'd be a lot more usable. As they are, they look good but that it, there just not practical on today's busy roads

Haha very true, but I do like having them for safety and when we run in convoys to shows

Mine's a H reg 1970. I've seen that bronze under some silver paint on my rocker cover. Were they still bronze for the 1970 Mk3's? If so, what paint did you use for yours?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure. It took a fair bit of research with mine to get it the correct colour, but I know the Mk3 is a pain for detail changing throughout production. Best bet is to ask the question on the TSSC forum 👍

Good evening from the United States, I have a US version of the 1971 Mark IV. I am doing some engine work and looking at repainting the engine; however, I have not been able to find any information on the original engine color for the American versions of the Triumph. My car club thinks it was blue, but there is much debate, perhaps you know? Thank you for your help and blessed be.

As far as I'm aware all Triumph engines were painted black, with the exception of the Stag that was silver and the Dolomite 1850 and Sprint that was part black and part silver. With a Spitfire the engine should be black, however the rocker covers did vary in colour with the production year, on a '71 Mk IV it should be painted silver 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics awesome, thank you… my poor Frankensteined engine is Ford Blue, can’t wait to get it back to full spec save the Weber downdraft.

Yep, the bullet mirrors look great but they are not very functional...did you get greasy fingerprints on your newly painted rocker cover Steve!
