As I've refreshed the rear suspension with the #TriumphSpitfire Project it's time to look at the front suspension, and give that the same treatment. I have decided to replace the front coil spring and get a set of #Spax shock absorbers from #MossEurope Hopefully this will make a great improvement on the cars current set up.

Cheers Graham, that would be the dream. I when out of a long drive in the Spitfire yesterday when the weather was good, and today it's snowing. With the roads being salted the Spitfire is the only classic car I'll use in this weather, as it's getting rebuilt with new sills etc so it's a care of enjoy it before I mollycoddle it after rebuild 👍

@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I always say their are three ways you can go with a classic, original, original with some mods, or modified. In all honestly I like original, but at the same time my MGB is modified, so I say so long as its being worked on and put back on the road, and not in the scrapyard then it's another one saved and enjoyed for what it is. So fair play to you mate, and keep up the good work with your MGB roadster, I do like the halo headlights on yours, they look good 👍

I've got to do this to my 79 spitfire I just bought sooner rather than later although I might want it to run well first. I enjoyed your presentation with two reservations, one of which has already been taken care of. It was painful for me also to see the time and effort to do what an air wrench does so well. The sound was great except my soundbar and bass box had to be turned down some and I had to turn it back up every time I wanted to hear what you were saying. Maybe a little less volume? Anyhow, I do have a question about the ride height. Mine's too low now, the wheels occasionally hit the fender opening while at rest but turning the wheel. The other thing is my tie rod ends are pointed at an up angle toward the wheel about an inch and I gather they're supposed to be level. The only ride height specs I can find say that it should be 4ft. with the hood up. That just makes no sense. Have you any help on the ride height?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers Don, at the moment (time of writing) there is a supply problem with standard ride height springs on Spitfires with certain suppliers. There has been a batch made to standard specifications, however they are not standard! They are infected lowered coil springs that have been labeled up wrongly and sold as standard ride height. From what you are saying it seems like you have a pair of them springs. The standard springs should measure at rest, and unsprung before fitting them into the shock absorber so straight out the box, just under 13 inches long, or approx 33cm. The bad batch are notable 1 inch or so shorter at rest unsprung, and out of the box and not fitted to the shocker. If you haven't thrown your old springs, it may well be worth checking them against your new ones, and getting in contact with your supplier for a refund 👍

Great video, I need to do this job on my MK1, is there a special tool to remove the hubcaps I'm worried about damaging them ?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics Год назад
Cheers Chris, no there isn't. Best way is to have towel on the floor, put some cardboard on the wheel and use a screwdriver or a strong plastic trim tool to remove them 👍
@JGASH666
@JGASH666 3 года назад
Amazing job!! Did you go for poly or rubber. Looks like rubber on the video. Was ride comfort a decision between those two options. Also is there a specific compression point on that tool you need to get the springs to before you remove/add those top nuts? Loving these vids.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
At the moment I've just got rubber bushes, however they will be replaced with poly bushes in time. As for the tool, you only need to compress the spring a little before undoing the nuts, as its a safe tool, the spring won't go off once its compressed 👍

Another cracking video, althoughSteve, you are making me add more things to my list of "To buy stuff" . Using the compression tool, could you spin the threads through with a cordless drill to reduce ratchet use? I only ask cuz I'm lazy 🤣
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Haha good stuff, you could do but they don't recommend it. I believe it will prematurely wear out the tool using power tools on it. They are not that expensive, but it's best done by hand 👍

Luvley jubley! Hi Steve . It is a straightforward job . I'd crack on with mine if l had one !! 😂😂 l guess you did the calipers and discs previously ! You must chuckle when you think how much you paid for this little gem . Mint one's are now commanding 5 figure sums . Those sills look deceptively good. Have the inner's gone as well ? Great stuff. Take care and stay safe.

The brakes we're done by the previous owner, they are good, but I will be upgrading them at some point. As for the sill, you'd want to check them with a magnet, there a fair bit of filler in them 👍

So, how did she ride? Notice much difference? I put KYB non adjustable shocks on mine and it rides well. Couldn't afford anything fancier but I'm curious, lol
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
At the moment I've got it set to the softest settings, so its not much different from standard set up. I'll will tweak it up over time, but i'd say they are well worth the money, as they are endlessly adjustable 👍

Not gonna lie, the right side frame rail on your Spit terrifies me. Any plans for addressing those holes? My ‘77 has it bad on the bottom of that area, but I’ve never seen it on the sides like that.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
Hello chap, what you see on my Spitfires frame isn't holes, it's flaking paintwork. With the exception of the front outriggers that mount the body to the frame that have been patched welded over, the frame is very strong on my Spitfire. I've just never got round to giving it a good cleaning up and going over with a new coat of paint. I might come back to it and clean it up and paint it as a video as some point 👍

For those of you thinking of using any other tool to do this DON'T! YOU MUST use a spring compression tool like this or you will hurt yourself or worse the car! I tried it with hose clamps and I nearly lost an eye.... This video shows how to do it properly....
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
A you rightly say, it's sometimes well worth investing in the correct tool for the job. And when it comes to coil springs, it's not worth getting hurt doing them 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics I haven't seen a video by you on the rear hubs yet but that it is also a job that you simply cannot do without the proper hub puller...
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I do have this hub puller tool your talking about, along with many other Triumph specialist tools. I will make a video at some point using the hub puller tool. However it's like anything really, I need to wait until either my wheel bearings are worn out or someones car who I work on rear wheel bearings are worn, and if they allow me to film it 👍
