My grandfather purchased one of these new in 69. He drove it for a few hundred Kms before pulling the entire car apart, putting the engine pieces in bags of oil and wrapping the body panels (he is a compulsive tinkerer and retired engineer). He has never got around to rebuilding it and apart from replacing the oil in the bags every few years it's still sitting there. I suspect that one day I'll end up with it and will have the opportunity to build myself a 'brand new' 69 TR6.

My first car was a 1973 MG Midget. It was a great little car and I had it for about a year and a half before moving up to this very same car. 1974 TR6. I didn't have any major issues with either car, only annoyances lol! Great video Nick! I look at these from time to time and will probably get a Spitfire or TR6 again one day just to tool around on weekends.

Oh Nick. What lovely nostalgia. My mate in Australia in the 70's had a TR4 and then moved up to a TR6. It was like getting into a rocket ship! As i drove a Volkswagen beetle at the time I thought the brakes were great..ha ha. There was place in an outer suburb of Melbourne Australia that for many year resorted 'Trumpies' and i would go there with my old Peugeot 503 for servicing and just drool over what they were working on. How i would love to climb out of my Land Rover Discovery D4 (which i love) and into my TR6 for a spin in the country. Ahhh If only i had one.........

Nick my man! I came by way of Heidi and Franny for the Porsche stuff and I find a TR6. I have a 1976 with overdrive and hard top and I love it. Times less British styling with a bit of Italian and German help. First thing I did was move that ignition to the dash.

Great cars. Spent time driving these in Auckland back in the day, always a pleasure. The injection actually suits them well, made for a smoother engine with nice power. The overdrive was operated from a column lever and if I remember correctly worked in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th! Unlike the sedans (Dad had a 2500TC) which like the Stag has the switch on the gear stick and worked in 3rd and 4th only. Yes, beautiful to look and and really nice to drive. Perfect for a summer country run. Keep 'em coming Nick, always enjoy watching your videos.

Had a well sorted one of these for 20 years (think lots of hours & dollars getting it sorted). Brakes are easily sorted by fitting vented volvo discs at the front. You travel not in rocket ship but a time capsule with the special feel of everything happening on the road around you. Easy to travel for hours in provided it's not 90+ degrees (no air conditioning...) Thanks for doing this clip for all of us.

I had a 1971 TR6 in 1971. Went through 3 rear shocks (construction in my area at the time) and broke two U-joints. Had to drive it 15 minutes in winter to get the heat up. Felt like a king driving it but it handled like crap. Tremendous understear due in part to the over sized wheels. But very nostalgic indeed

I was SO excited to see this review! My dads brother, uncle, bought a brand new 66 TR4A IRS. About 70 he gave the car to my dad. I got to drive it through HS and dad even took it to Germany when he got stationed there from 80-83. I was there for two of those years and loved driving it on the Autobahn! Dad passed away 7 years ago and I planned on getting back it back in running shape. Dad had let it sit in his driveway over the years and it was in disrepair. Well after finding the repairs were going to be very expensive I took a great offer from a person who rebuilt it. I did notice on this TR6 you're showing it has the exact same steering wheel as our TR4!?

Love the old TR6s. In Australia I had a 1972 Triumph 2500PI which had the same engine, but fuel injected (as were the TR6s here). I recognise the instruments as being the same too. But typical British they used a sub-standard fuel system which was a Lucas windshield wiper motor to power the fuel pump which could not cope with the 100+ psi fuel injection system. On hot or even just warm days it gave up due to fuel turning to vapour. Since those days I believe that pretty much all TR6s in Australia have replaced the crap Lucas system with an updated, low-pressure Bosch fuel injection system that works well.
@racketman2u
@racketman2u 6 лет назад
yeah, my TR6 fuel pump managed to melt the solder of the motor brush wires! and the stub axles of ALL the Triumphs were weak as, and the trailing arm suspension a disaster for handling on the limit. BUT apart from that wiper motor pump, that PI was magic , and on a sunny day theres no car I'd rather be in.

I am a stickler for originality an all but after a disastrous European tour I did in mine in 2006 I decided the brakes and cooling systems needed to be modernised. Had no accident just the brake fluid kept boiling in the Alps and the engine overheated dangerously in the Italian summer traffic jams. Now I have just driven the car from London to south west Ireland with no problems and have a cooling and braking system that is comparable to any modern car.

I like the color. Back in the day, I purchased a near-new 1977 Porsche 911S that was close to that in color, the color was called Ivory. It was a light yellowish color, with black trim all around. That is the one I should have kept. But I digress; when in college my buddy had one that we partied in, until it was a mere heap. The thing fell apart from... well, use. We learned all about British electrical and mechanical "engineering." Remember Whitworth and Lucas, Prince of darkness??? lol

Nice critique on the Triumph. I had a new Sunbeam Tiger (1966 260) back in the day. Wood dash , white on black gauges, toggle switches what a trip. Lousy heater, had to replace the generator with a Delco alternator, Lucas oh well …. Interesting having to take a British Sunbeam with a Ford V8 into a Plymouth Dealer for servicing though. Cars are fun.

I was able to drive a new one. Many years ago, I met a guy at a party who was able to buy one with no mileage. When Triumph stopped making them, some guy had the bright idea of buying up as many as he could and put them into storage. After a decade, he realized that he wasn't going to make a profit on his investment and started unloading them.

Nick, thanks for this very enjoyable and well done nostalgia review of the TR6. You produce great videos that are very informative and entertaining at the same time. For this review, you probably should have done a little more background work before putting it out there. As for the car itself, almost all were sold in the US and it was pretty much the last gasp of the British "export market" that started with the rebuilding and recovery of Europe and Great Britain from the devastation of WWII. There was a TR7 and a TR8 (Rover V8 engine) but best not to mention those in a conversation about the TR6. It's kind of amusing and ironic that these cars, so quintessentially British, were little known by Brits, Aussies, New Zealanders, other Europeans, etc. That situation was corrected in more recent years when the Euro became a lot more valuable than the dollar and the US cars were snatched up by collectors from the UK and Europe. There was quite a little industry in converting LHD cars to RHD; I imagine that has about run its course by now. The history of British Leyland is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, from the 1960's to the grim end in the 1980's. It's a lesson in how government nationalizing industries ends in destruction and despair. Since then various entities like BMW, Tata (India), and SAIC (China) have toyed with pieces of the wreckage. BMW flaunts their ownership of Rolls Royce and uses Mini to sell cheap little cars. Tata, an Indian conglomerate, likes to play proper British with sedans and SUVs badged as Jaguars. Sort of a reversal of the British colonial period in India. MG (Morris Garages), Jaguar (Sir William Lyons), Rover (making bicycles since 1878), Austin-Healey (Sir Donald Healey) and Triumph all got sucked into the giant flushing toilet of BLMC in the 1960's. The TR6 is special because it's the last of a certain breed of cars, square tube ladder frame, agricultural powertrain, crude suspension, unpredictable handling, useless interior features, impossibly unreliable electrics, and absolutely no consideration of passenger safety. I think that one needs to have lived through those times and with those cars to appreciate their heritage. And that's the part that's missing from your much appreciated retrospective.

My mechanic has had a 1971 British Racing Green TR6 sitting on a lift in his shop on and off for the last 5 years. The car is ridiculously well restored, and may actually look better than brand new. Nice looking example. Detuning and carbs for US models was for emission regulation not reliability, bit of a shame to strangle the power potential of what is a sports car. Never had any issues with my PI. I prefer the earlier ignition key location, albeit a bit of an odd position and offers no steering lock feature, but much more accessible! Shame the UK models didn't have as many dash toys, lights and buttons as the US versions.

Nice overview overall but did not focus on the best part of this car: the exhaust note. Also, the comment that this is not a common car in the US? Most of the TR6 sales were in the U.S. - of the 94,619 models produced, 86,249 were exported, with just 8,370 sold in the U.K. The UK 150 HP Lucas injection version is appealing for sure but the the reliability of the US version and availability of parts make this a SUPER potential collectible for the world market. The best examples come from the US and are being swept up by other folks in other countries. I have a '75 myself and a friend of mine just bought two US barn finds and sold them at ridiculous prices to a buyer in Germany. Cheers.

Hi Nick. Nice review, but a couple of corrections if I may. 1)Triumph were not THAT small a company; over the years they had quite a decent range of cars. 2) I can't think of any other NEW car in Britain in the 70's that had a 6V battery - except perhaps a VW beetle, (obviously imported) The engine in this example is in excellent condition, but I certainly don't recognise that rocker cover. Surely it must be an after market one? Regards Mark in the UK

Your comment brought back memories of my first car. A TR-4. My brother has graduated from college and he gave it to me just as I was starting college myself. I remember those rear shock absorbers with the lever arms. Always needed tightening after a while. I ended up installing a fan that could actually work. A fiberglass fan than could move some air. The fans had to be replaced every so often. It didn't make any sense. The original fan wasn't very effective but the heater could put out heat during the winter. I ended up putting a plastic bag blocking over half of the radiator to get some heat from the heater. It was a fun car and it taught me a lot about working on a car.
