Sony Dream Machine Model ICF10W. Transistor/ Solid state just refers to circuits that are built with silicone based components such as transistors and diodes as opposed to the older vacuum tube based circuits. As these components became smaller and were often integrated frequently thousands at a time into integrated circuits (ICs) and used with surface mount technology they were less often referred to as solid state. But in reality most of today’s circuits are still fundamentally solid state.
Solid state which began to gain water acceptance in the 60s was a huge improvement from the old vacuum tube circuits in terms of power use, heat generation, size, weight and fragility. But many old timers for years and perhaps some still will still swear by the fidelity and quality of the old vacuum tube circuits as being preferred.

JZ, I have learned so much form you. You explain things so clear and effective that the new person without electronic background can understand and not get overwhelmed. I watched other RU-vid channels and was so confused since their presentation is focused on individual with electronic background. Thank you so much for taking your valuable time making these videos.

Sure glad you began the video with your subscription mention. I thought all this time I was subscribed but found out I wasn’t. I must have thought I was subscribed because your videos always came up in my recommended feed.

Hi Jim, so good hearing from you and I am happy that this video was helpful. Welcome to this group. RU-vid changed their subscription process without that much communication. The last a few months some of my subscribers were not receiving notification and thought that I gave up or something happened to me. After several days of research found out that RU-vid added more layers to their subscription and those subscribers including me had no idea about this change. This change doesn't make any sense, why people subscribe and never know if we have new video. Guess they don't want us to make any profit, but they have tons of ads on our videos.. LOL. Have a good day, Regards, Jay

This is absolutely the best video on RU-vid regarding this subject. I have watched so many video and non explained this well to troubleshoot and repair transistor radio. I definitely will make the capacitor and resistor tester as you shown, such a great idea using old multimeter part to make the tester. Thank you so much, you have no idea how grateful I am. As I said this is the best video on RU-vid.

Love Radio, thank you for such a wonderful and uplifting compliment, I am absolutely speechless. It is such a pleasure to work on these very unique radios; they have such a fantastic design. I can say that they are an ART work and need to be rescued. I really appreciate your time watching my videos and sending uplifting comments. I am doing this as a hobby with no electronic background, trying my best to create detailed videos to encourage others without electronic background that are new to this hobby so they can understand and not get overwhelmed. The goal is to rescue old rusty, dusty, and ratty radios for future generation to enjoy the beauty of old technology and very unique designs. Glad that you enjoyed watch this video. Have a great day! That was a great troubleshooting video Jay. A lot of handy tips for working on Transistor radios. Those radios were mas produced and with mass production as you can imagine the did those circuit boards so fast that sometimes the cold solder joints would not show up for years and sometimes the soldering Flux would cause trouble later on. Thanks for another informative video.

Hi Larry, thank you so much my friend, glad that you enjoyed watching this video. You are absolutely correct about these radios. I guess they thought people will not repair these radios, very hard to troubleshoot and replace the compannets. Glad that I was able to fix it for her and bring back some joy. Have a good weekend. Regards, Jay

I must say Jay I like your troubleshooting techniques. You often don't need a schematic with what you have to do to find this particular problem's solution. It was all looking and tapping to see the bad joints by resoldering them! Those parts are getting smaller with time especially nowadays.

Hi Steve, I was so lost working on this radio since have not repaired 1980's with transistor chip component. Was so glad that part was OK otherwise I could be in big trouble.. LOL. Most of my transistor radios have no schematic so I had to figure the way to fix them. I guess that I lost my mind or like the challenge, but still not sure which one applies to me.. LOL. Depends who you ask I guess. As always so good hearing from you my friend. Have a good day! Regards, Jay

Nicely done! Some time back I was given a modern radio to restore, it had an awful buzz (as if the mains filter cap was no longer functioning). I did a lot of the troubleshooting steps you described and got no closer to solving the issue, so I eventually gave up. You have inspired me to consider giving it another try. Thanks as always for the great content!

Derstrom, I am so pleased to hear that this video encourage you to try it again. Check all joints and resolder the one that are troublemaker. LOL. Watch my other transistor radios, each they had different problem and had to take different technique to solve the problem. You can do it! As always is so good hearing from you. Have a great day! Regards, Jay
