Trucker protest: Chuckwagon carrying diesel fuel turned away from protest site by Ottawa police

Supporters of the "Freedom Convoy" protest in Ottawa attempted to drive a chuckwagon carrying diesel fuel into the protest site Sunday afternoon, but were eventually prevented from proceeding any further towards the site of the protest by Ottawa police.
In a robust conversation captured by a Global News camera, the driver of the chuckwagon and other trucker convoy supporters attempted to persuade police to allow them to proceed to the protest site near Parliament Hill, with a chuckwagon with what appeared to be a large tank of diesel fuel in the back.
Ottawa police however refused to allow them to pass, citing public safety risks.
Police in Ottawa have said they are expecting as many as 400 more trucks and up to 2,000 people on foot to arrive this weekend to join the protest that has been rebranded by critics, including a lot of frustrated downtown residents, as an occupation.
Weekend protests in solidarity with the Ottawa event are being organized near provincial legislatures in Toronto, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Regina, and Victoria, as well as the Coutts, Alta., border crossing.

Horse drawn carts were hauling fuel long before modern transportation. They were used in cities to fuel gas lamps in the streets, heating oil for homes, kerosene for light, for stoves, and lots of other uses. All done safely for hundreds of years. Diesel is generally safe in liquid form which is why it's being transported in a sealed container.

Diesel fuel can not be ignited with a lighter, match, or cigarette so the safety concern of the officer that it is a fire hazard, is not valid.

Diesel can spill making an environmental mess that's hard to contain and clean up. Is that fuel tote approved for transport on public highways? Are the horses CSA certified not to spook? What's the GVWR of the wagon?

This is how it always is. Each of those in yellow jackets and uniforms is protecting a pension and salary. That's their motivation for being there. Situations on the ground are often easy to "Monday morning quarterback" but judging by what the officer said, all that would be necessary is to ditch the wagon, get 30 or forty strong guys around that tank and walk it in. Take frequent breaks, ,maybe roll it on some pipe but it looks doable.

I remember when the RCMP and other Canadian police forces were greatly respected across the country, and the world. That reputation has been in shambles for a while now, and this officer's lack of ability to think for himself only enforces the current downward trend of public approval, in my opinion. Denying fuel for heating purposes to children in a peaceful demonstration is not something many of us ever thought we'd see in our country. I'd really like to know what the WW11 vets think of what is going on here. And, by the way, I am triple vaccinated, but am still greatly disappointed in our policing system.

@@SlaveKing I am all for right to protest, but there are ways to protest without blocking the roads and honking horns. Trudeau isn’t even there, all this does is stripping people of quality sleep which can cause serious health issues. Some of the most serious potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke some of which can easily kill a person. Other potential problems include obesity, depression, impairment in immunity. Some of us also had to be out in -25 for over an hour with a 17 month old baby because the bus she takes can’t get to where her day care is due to this protest.

I think most people are missing the point. The protest drivers are independents, they are taking the risk. A very large number of non protesting drivers (company drivers), are watching what is happening. If things go wrong in the capital, the other drivers will stop and the cities WILL begin running out of supplies. Most cities cannot continue to supply their citizens after 3 days of a logistics breakdown. This is not as simple as a group of malcontents, this action is well thought out and is inevitable.

Wow, I once attempted that level of quiet and peaceful conversation with the jackboots at the US border, 'once', and learned the hard way that when they want to do something, even if you have a valid and lawful point, you're wrong and they will prove they are tougher than you. Just because. Those Ottawa cops were truly as polite and respectful as you're going to get in that situation and should be respected for the difficult position they have been put in. They didn't even have to apologize but the cop actually did as a human being to another showing him respect. That's following orders and showing compassion.

This will also work, yet it will be a much more difficult task, and require large amounts of volunteers to hand carry smaller fuel amounts per person up to the hill area. Look take some diesel, try to ignite it with a lighter, match or even a torch. So what was the result ? Diesel has a high flash point, in other words in this situation it is relatively safe. However spills can be a problem, but that goes for any chemical or even many concentrated substances that when diluted are safe for consumption. The point I am trying to make is don't make enemies out of the police. I have been watching closely and am speaking from my own experience there are a few bad apples but when the dust settles we will live together again and this movement can help put an end to the us and them mentality and point us in the direction of we ... or it can go the other way. Don't let the true enemy prevail.

Diesel fuel is only dangerous at temperatures above 200 degrees Fahrenheit, so is it combustible not flammable. It will explode if touched with a truck's glow plug that is generating heat greater than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. That is were the danger lies, its with the actual truck owner potentially removing an active glow plug and using it as a detonator.
