While yes, we have the sheet music telling us WHAT to play, the conductor tells us HOW to express what we're playing and helps every individual person play TOGETHER! Since you are so good with the 'meaning' of lyrics let me give you a little clue about what Nessun Dorma is about. It is from the Opera by Puccini 'Turandot'. It is set in centures ago China and it is about a princess who does NOT want to marry so she has set up a quiz and if the suitor - of which there are many since they'll become prince - can't answer three questions they are executed. So lots of dudes have died! Along comes the man that Luciano is singing the part of and he's gonna try cause he's desperate. And guess what, he gets all of the right answers so now she has to marry him, but she still doesn't want to so he gives her a test. Tell him his name by the next morning and she doesn't have to marry him. So she orders the people to find out his name or they'll die the next day. He sings Nessum Dorma (meaning nobody sleeps!) and this song's lyrics are so beautiful None shall sleep, None shall sleep! Everyone in the world should hear this performance. "Vincero!" - "I will win!" The conductor keeps the whole orchestra in time, amongst other things. Classical music speeds up, slows down, goes soft, quiet, strong and loud according to the emotions of the song etc - the dynamics and changes of tempo are way beyond what popular music normally uses. Imagine an orchestra of 75 or so, all with different parts, different instruments, unable to see each other, all slowing down precisely without someone to keep them together and guiding them? It would be a shambles.

Yes, the musicians do watch the Conductor. He/she is in charge. They control the time, tempo and mood of the music. They're the coach of the team.

FYI, the conductor does a vital job. The thing to remember is that symphony concert halls are designed to direct all the sound from the stage out to the audience. So this means that the musicians on stage can't really hear each other, depending where they're sitting. The conductor gives the visual cues that tells them when to speed up, slow down, play louder, play slower, when to come in on their various parts, etc. Yeah, sure, every musician knows every note of their parts by heart, but classical musicians basically do live performances as their main job, so no matter how many times they've played a piece together, they still have to adapt to each in the moment. Plus, each conductor brings in their own idea of what the piece should sound like, so there will always be differences from one show to another. That's what the conductor does. So in this case, the conductor was making sure the orchestra and chorus were following along with Pavarotti. That's why he kept watching him. For example: Once upon a time, I went to a classical concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC. The featured artist was a pianist who was popular at the time, a guy named Ivo Pogorelich, I think. I can't remember who was conducting. It was similar to this except it was the orchestra and the piano, rather than a singer. And apparently, the pianist and the conductor had a difference of opinion about the proper tempo of one of the pieces they performed that night. The conductor, it seemed, wanted to go faster than the pianist did. In the middle of the piece there was a long section of the piano playing variations solo, and at the end of that, the orchestra was supposed to come back in with a lot of energy. So as that part is wrapping up, the conductor raises his arms to alert the orchestra that their cue is coming up - and they're all alert, instruments ready - and the conductor has his arms in the air, and he looks at the pianist, just like Zubin Mehta looked to Pavarotti. And the pianist looked up at the conductor, and started playing his notes slower ... and slower ... and slower. Staring right at the guy who has got everyone waiting, and going ... plink ........ plink ........................plink....... It was so petty and so funny. I can just imagine how much that conductor and everyone in that orchestra hated that pianist. Anyway, that's the conductor's job.

Regarding the conductor: He's like a coach. He has taught the team/orchestra how to execute the notes and then he's reminding the team how to do it in coordination. An orchestra without a conductor is like a team with written instructions of the game (as in everybody hears their own version of the piece in their head and plays to that). Also: a lovely reaction!

My 14 year old daughter and I saw him in Denver in 2001. He couldn’t reach the high notes as well as in this video. But he was still amazing and funny and warm. My daughter had a Luciano Pavarotti poster in her room! So much charisma and talent!

I don't remember it snowing when Pavarotti sang this but it was great to see/hear it again.

Apart from any featured solo guest artists, the conductor is vital and is the highest position in Orchestra. The second most important position is first chair violin. Classical music has such complexity to it and such constant changing of tempo and Dynamics and Arrangements of all those interest payments, it would be impossible to do without a conductor. And the conductor has to know a lot about all the instruments and has to be able to manage a score that might at any given time have 24 or even more simultaneous parts for the various instruments, and it is an extremely difficult thing to do. And at that level, those kind of conductors are known for bringing their particular style to the work.

The conductor is the very famous Zubin Meta, he is the best in the world. The choir is huge! I don't know which choir it is, but I'm sure they are the best in the world too. And of course, Pavarotti was the best in the world.

A good conductor can make a huge difference to how any orchestra sounds. Orchestras are huge and classical music very complex so it all has to be held together in tempo, volume etc. He "shapes" a piece or "paints" a picture!!

The conductor uses that stick to keep time by waving it on the beats, so all the people playing instruments are both reading the music on their papers and watching the conductor for timing while playing. Also the conductor kindof tells you what volume you should be playing at by waving their hands around, its hard to explain

You just said "They are all in sync, the instrumentalists and the vocalist" That's the conductors job to keep them together. Without the conductor the 70+ musicians would have their own interpretation of how fast or slow or loud or soft to play and even worse when the music speeds up or slows down it the conductor that makes sure they speed up at the same tempo, or it would sound like a nightmare. Also there have been instances where people have lost where they are in the music, the conductor helps them come in on their cues etc. Now with a solosist performing like here, the conductor not only tells the orchestra where and when and how, but he now has to also take his cues from the soloist and follow him while he leads the orchestra. It's one of the toughest jobs ever! And you are listening to probably one of the top 5 Opera tenors of all time here. Granted at an older age, you should hear him sing this when he was younger, but still, a masterclass. And there's nothing more beautiful than Puccini's music when is comes to Opera.

Yes, of course we are following the conductor. What’s on the page is only the start of everything an ensemble player has to do. Basically, the orchestra, and every one of those master musicians in it, is like a single collective instrument, played by that director up front.

An orchestra without a conductor is like a football or basketball team without a captain: It is not enough for everyone to doteir best, they also need to coordinate with eachother. It is the collective effort, not the single musician, that counts.

An orchestra definitely needs a conductor. I watched a program once where the conductor stopped and within seconds the whole thing started to collapse. He's not there just for the timing. It's like he's operating a huge mixing desk. With so many instruments and requirements, the musicians aren't always aware of where they are in it all.

A long time ago I saw “the sum of all fears” movie in the theater, it was about an inbound nuclear war between the US and Russia , a nuclear war that would wipe man off the earth and the main character finally discovers there’s a Nazi group setting things up to look like it’s Russia instigating.
