I've always wanted to try Hakka Thunder Tea Rice so I came to Singapore's most popular stall. I love the thunder tea rice my mother in law cooks, but I actually never had one outside. It's partly because it's not that easy to find at hawker centres, due to the difficult/time consuming process to cook.

Wow, you found my favourite hakka ground tea rice stall - the vegetarian Thunder Tree! Their vegetables are mostly organic, and many from their own organic farm. They have many other wonderful vegetarian dishes too.

If you like the lui cha( thunder tea rice), probably can try the stall at boon lay place food village. Specialise only 1 dish though. priced at $3.50 to $4 but it sold out before 2pm.

The vegetarian mixed vegetable rice/bee hoon in the same food court is nice too. During pre-Covid time, it is a long queue during lunch time, but not now.

They uses mainly organic vegetables from their own farm in singapore! farm to table concept and eating what's in season. So their vegetable offering for their lei cha rice will change according to what is available at the farm. Just like hakka people who adapt to their environment. 😊

funnily though I've seen quite a few thunder tea stalls in hawker centres, but I've never try it before seems too plain to me hahahaha and I cant have peanuts. Hmmm but I think the individual dishes are quite simple though. This is a food court not a hawker centre. So the price is more expensive than hawker lol.

Hi Ghib Ojisan, for the thunder tea rice’s tea, try without adding water, and take the paste by itself. No need to mix w thunder rice. If u like the basil flavour in the tea paste, it will be very flavourful without water. Wa.. your knowledge of hakka history is very good. Didn’t kmow until I watched ur video.

I grew up eating Lui Cha (that's the actual pronunciation in Hakka) at home. If I had told my mom that dish would one day be sold at hawker stall, she would have laughed at the ridiculous idea, and I would have agreed with her. Imagine my amazement when it first hit the stall in the 2000s. The Hakka families including mine were thinking "Are you freaking serious??? Non Hakka people would love that?" To this day, as an uncle now, I'm still amazed and appreciative.

You should go to hawker centre next to people park complex and try the Yong taw foo there.

This should be the same as Ampang Yong Tau Foo and if I didn't remember wrongly, the first Ampang Yong Tau Foo shop started in East Coast Road back in the 1990s'.

In olden days, the green paste was mixed and pounded in a stone bowl, hence it is called "pounded" tea as the Chinese character is written. I think if the stall named it Pounded tea will sound very boring, instead, it use Thunder Tea will be more appealing. And thanks to your video as now I know one more place to eat. Have fun.

Hello Ghib san! I used to visit the complex where u had thunder tea rice, for Ah Chew traditional dessert upstairs (they closed down though but u visited their shop at Bugis area, Liang Seah St). I always wonder if an authentic thunder tea rice would have a very raw veggie taste. I enjoy japanese green tea but not sure about thunder tea rice. And thanks for "bringing" us to Fu Lin yong tau foo! My sis raved about it but still didnt have the chance to visit. The place looked really cool!

Yong tau foo .... we are hakka... so 4 parts fish paste and one part pork with a dash of salted fish.

Been to their Raffles Hospital branch before, but never seen a Ka Ka Kolo Mee before (wonder what is that??) till today, haha will check it out.

I recommend Peoples' Park hawker centre(OG side) home grown Hainan braised beef fen(noodle) stall... operates by two Hainanese sisters. A very different flavour compared to the Cantonese cuisine.

Hi Ghib we are suppose to pour the green tea to the rice and eat. But for some reason I will eat this dry without the green tea soup., acquired taste I guess...haha not used to the taste.

You are eating Hakka ( 客家） Food in the same day. Both Thunder Tea ( 擂茶）and Yong Tau Foo ( 酿豆腐）are from the Hakka people ( 客家人）。Yong Tau Foo is like Japanese Onden.

Talking about "Rare Dishes" in Chinatown, there is a stall called "Pan Ji Cooked Food" selling fresh sachima at Chinatown complex. I think it's the only store in Singapore selling fresh one. There's also another stall selling Loh Mei (Fermented Beancurd Stew) at People's Park hawker. I think that's the only stall left selling that, but I might be wrong. But do note that the taste is rather subjective, as fermented Beancurd does have a very strong taste.

@@TheLostOjisan Welcome. Thanks for the thunder tea video. Think I will bring my mum there one day. Great that you are covering these uncommon dishes. It will bring more awareness to these dishes that may eventually disappear from Singapore Hawkers Centres once those old hawker retires. Use to like Shui Jing Bao 水晶包 (Crystal Dumplings) a long time back, but I think there isn't much stores selling that left in Singapore. Don't think they taste the same either.

I love their Mushroom Kolo Mee. Very fragrant. Must try. Their Crispy Wanton. The Yong Tau Foo is with mushroom paste. They are vegetarian so won't have meat.

I prefer freshly cut chili and having some soya sauce with the rice. Chili sauce/sambal is NOT chili padi and defeats the purpose of the lightless of the dish. The stall owner is glib.
