An old police driving instructor friend of mine, who used to race 60's & 80 f2 cars, explained that many drivers of that time used to roll in neutral around a lot of slow corners to keep the revs up so they could slip into 3rd quite easily...which when you think about it, is absolutely fucking mental!

I have never been more exhausted in my life...I wanted to die after 40 laps. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like IRL with 19 other cars to deal with. Looks like you were driving on a green track, need to set the real road setting with a bit of rubber to do hot laps like that. you will find the cars a lot more controllable with more grip as you would have in a real qually session. It was just starting to rubber up a bit at the end there. Its a shame the online racing with these cars is practically non existent. Need to do the same but with the Brabham BT20 around Monaco or Longford.

@@RLRSwanson Nah it was actually quite a bit different - kerbs had been installed more than 1 metre away from the walls which made it narrower and hence slower at the same time, all the while making a mistake less costly by not having to die, just 'gently' hop across those kerbs. Also, it had actually been moved a lot further down the road in 1968 to another opening and so was at a completely different place to both this the original fast chicane and the current one. (Which was moved back up when they replaced the one used in the 1970s and 1980s.) No wonder there were no major accidents there after Bandini's death. The second option was much safer.

How weird that the track 50 years ago seems so much more well-suited to today's cars than the current version of the track!
@ShazenVideos
@ShazenVideos 5 лет назад
But not for todays safety regulations. There's a reason why the chicane after the tunnel has been added. Also the chicane at monza's finish line. That's because the FIA has defined how long and wide run-off areas have to be at certain speeds. The old chicane would need a huge run-off area on the left side of the track (which is not possible, because water and yachts). The first corner also have been narrowed so that the drivers aren't able to drive through that as fast - therefore removing the need for a run-off area on the left side there. Most of the curves on modern tracks have the function to slow down the cars just so that a run-off area can be spared on the parts where it's almost impossible to build them. You can look up any modern circuit and look at the corners and run-off areas, you'll understand why they're built the way they are.

@@ShazenVideos Agreed, if Monaco wasn't the crown jewel of the F1 calendar with such a rich history, I doubt it would have ever been approved to be added to the calendar if proposed as a new track these days. The old track was certainly wider and the cars were much smaller, but safety was completely non existent. Crashing into the harbour is actually a best case scenario if you did happen to lose control. Monaco today, as Jimmy said, is incredibly boring on race day (unless some rain spices things up), but quali is still incredibly fun, even if one team is dominant. But the current cars are too long and wide for Monaco, and seeing how FIA likes adding more and more street circuits to the calendar, I can't see this getting any better.

@@ShazenVideos The longest possible way of saying racing has become completely pussified.
@ShazenVideos

Why, because the drivers don't have to fear for their lives everytime they apply the brakes or turn the steering wheel they're not real racers anymore? Yeah such pussies right, how dare they collect a huge amount of money for racing the fastest cars in the world and still demand to stay alive afterwards. They all should be dying or at least getting crippled in the process, right? Man grow up.

I know they were rolling coffins, but man I love these old F1 cars. I'd love to see what modern materials and engineering sensibilities could do with the old designs, surely a replica could be made much safer than the originals.

As I recall from the Movie "Grand Prix", they had to use a manual "Stick" gear box. For the simulation to be genuine back in 1968, it would require the use of a stick shift. Just think how difficult it actually was, having to take one hand off the wheel at such high speeds. As powerful and fast as the new F1s are today , I can see how critical it is to have both hands on the wheel at all times. Nevertheless, the simulation does provides an opportunity to experience how thrilling it would be to drive a racing car, especially for those of us who have a need for speed.

This is the game I want to have a remake of! Better graphics, better AI and better multiplayer support. Or go even further, with the technology of today it is easy to make a game which spans from early to late 60s. That would be awesome a GPL remake with a carreermode which spans form early to late 60s with all of the contemporary machinery!
