Trying to FIX 2x SONY Cyber-shot CAMERAS DSC-W800

Hi, in this video I attempt to fix 2 faulty cameras that I bought from the same seller on eBay. They are both Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W800 point and shoot cameras.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

wow I was going to suggest try fixing a camera as I had bought a Canon Powershot sx710 hs a few months back off ebay £50 including postage, It was described as having a lens issue, selling on behalf of this persons dad, turns out once I opened it, it rattled and then I knew it was far worse than I had expected, I stripped it down using a youtube video to find a very delicate part inside the lens was broken to bits and impossible to mend (I did try) so ordered a new lens off Aliexpress for roughly 14 pounds more than the camera cost, waited a month or so and got it working perfect in the end, glad to see you have a go now.

I've bought several cameras like this where the lens stops retracting or extending. It's nearly always due to grit or sand between the tubes or the lens. Just take a single sheet of paper, wet it slightly with some IPA, and slide it into the gap between the tubes, moving it all the way around while holding the camera upside down. Whatever's in there usually gets dislodged, falls out, and the lens works again.

Advice: The lens unit has some sensors that measure the position of the inner rings, and focus lens support. The synchronization is crucial. You can find gears in Cd-ROM units that can be used with some small modifications. The hardest to fix compact camera fixed by me is Nikon S series. S2100, S210 S300, S2700. To most reliable are Panasonic Lumix Series. Oh... be careful with the capacitor. Trust me. We can talk via Skype if you need some help on cameras. Thank you for sharing another great video.

Hi Vince, an idea for when you purchase something on eBay is to print out the listing details and keep them in a folder. As packages arrive just tape the printout to the item that way all the details are on the item whenever you get to them. For added convenience you can also add notes to the printout like "Needs batteries/charger". I have ADHD and this process has been a game changer for my tinker projects and organisation. Thought it might be helpful for other busy minds. 👍

37:08 2MP is 1920 * 1080. So 2mp is enough for nearly every single person and application. The problem comes when you want quality 1080 pictures. You can either get a far superior camera which would cost more, or increase the MP which would happen naturally with time. With this method you can take the picture at 4-8k and downsample it to 1080. This would hide and smooth out the imperfections of the camera, but become easily noticeable on a RAW format. It's a cheap gimmick, but it does work for the average consumer.

If you're looking at images on a computer or a phone you can most certainly appreciate every last extra megapixel. Because you can zoom in and see clear detail still.
@Operational117
@Operational117 5 лет назад
Yes, and 20.1 megapixels are waaay higher than even the latest “enthusiast”-quality smartphones (including iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10+). EDIT: That said, they do have an insanely high resolution for their size, as the image sensor is pretty much pea-sized 🤯.
@AleksanderFimreite
@AleksanderFimreite 5 лет назад
@@Operational117 There are definitly phones that beat 20MP, but it's uncommon to see them, because most people who cares about camera quality have dedicated ones. So the main stream phones tend to not put any more production costs on cameras. As for myself I would very much like a phone like the Huawei P20 Pro with the AI chip for dark images but I just can't stand the stupid NOTCH. Still stuck at my Nexus 6.

Here is a tip: What i used to do, take a thin paper and run them through those surrounding layers of the lens part that comes out, there are 3 layes and sand gets stuck in 3 of these layers or dust and you get the problem when it cannot open, even a case where the gear breaks.

A nice idea with this camera is to remove the small sort of red glass in front of the image sensor. This small glass is the IR filter, without it the camera will record ir from ir leds(like your tv remote). I’ve done this as well and made a small ir emitter light underneath the camera. So i basicaly made a night view camera. It is quite funny to see something on the camera screen while you dont see it in real life.

I've gotten 4 parts or not working cameras on ebay and 2 of them were missing the original batteries but worked fine with no issues except minor cosmetic problems.The other 2 cameras were trickier..one had a broken sd card slot and the other one had a lens problem that wasn't fixable so used both cameras to make one working one..3 out of 4 isn't too bad..

12:45 If you remove the rectangular tinted glass/filter from the lens assembly in your right hand, you'll have an infrared camera. DIY infrared camera conversions - people pay money to have that done! Of course, it's usually a permanent, one-way operation. :)

The need for more pixels has a real explanation: color fidelity. The CCD sensors have in reality a very poor color quality, if you see a raw image zoomed in as it's taken by the camera you will notice a lot the color discrepance in each pixel, some will look more redish, others bluish and others greenish. When you reduce the image size, the more pixels you have, the less that error matters, that errors are "diluted" statistically as you blend a bigger amount of "camera pixels" for each "image pixel" :=)
@KorAllRBare
@KorAllRBare 5 лет назад
CCD? I don't think a run of the mill camera would employ really expensive CCD Sensors, I honestly thought most NON Professional Digital camera's if not all camera's now are all based upon the inexpensive CMOS sensor chips? But then it's been near to a decade since I delved into Digital Camera's and the old CCD's may have significantly dropped in price and perhaps even been refined to be much more responsive that the Cmos sensors..
@drgusman
@drgusman 5 лет назад
@@KorAllRBare Nowadays the most common sensor is the CCD, it's cost has been reduced a lot. That exact model uses the Super HAD CCD. www.sony.com/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-cameras/dsc-w800 And with the CMOS it would be the same but worse, CMOS has a lot more color error than CCD :)

For repairing gears, your best bet is to pin it. Drill a small hole into each part, then put a bit of glue into the hole. After that spray some accelerant onto the metal pin, then put the pin in the hole. Repeat for the other part and you should have a decently strong repair.
@pds8475
@pds8475 5 лет назад
The higher the megapixels the sharper the image. If you take the same photo with both the 8MP camera and the 20MP camera it should look crisper on the 20MP camera, but that also comes down to the post processing as well. The post processing applies effects and tries to make out of focus objects, in focus. That's why people have taken photos and have orbs in the image and think it's ghosts. In reality there was a speck of dust floating in the air. Although the person can't see it with the naked eye the camera does see it and the post processing tries to bring it into focus, which results in it showing a orb. Post processing is a automatic software function that happens within milliseconds, hence whether you are using the camera function or shooting video(if the camera shoots video clips) post processing is still applied.

@@Tim_3100 Oh no i would never suggest it is as good as a dedicated camera i was more aiming at my first sentence in that i always have it with me. For the gear thing, I was thinking you could do a silicon mould of the gear then do a positive with a hardening resin. Could work as a fix next time. Plastic gears really are a two state devise: either it's perfect or broken, no fix.

i use cameras and video cameras that i found in storage units to do all my online listings and i had to disassemble them blow some air through them and i have never had an issue and if I drop a camera or something happens to it i am not having babies because i haven't got a camera for my online stuff, I use a Sony cyber shot camera and a nikon camera and i also have a video camera i use all sourced from lockers or pallets i have bought so they didn't cost me anything because i more then made enough money to cover their costs with the other items. Its also allowed me to have a different set of cameras I have one set for photographing things I am selling and shooting short videos about the products I am selling and i have a different slightly more sophisticated setup for making videos and content and the only thing i paid for was an external hard drive to keep the videos on if i am out and about, sometimes i shoot 5-6 videos in a session and in between each one i transfer the data from the SD card to the external HDD. Ironically enough I bought a external HDD and was all pleased with myself and found 3 of them in a pallet a week later and ended up selling the one i bought just a week later after i bought it because the three i found were bigger capacity then the one i bought.

Harsh to call them a nasty seller! I pick up these kind of cameras all the time from car boots/auctions and if they don't work i sell them as parts, not worth the time opening them up to find the faults. Only worth doing the very basic checks from the sellers POV, sell the batteries and chargers separately and make as much as they can of it

When you’re doing the camera lens and the image sensor (the thing you defined was “doing the image”), it is critical to keep dust at a minimum! The camera production line requires so-called “dust-free rooms” when assembling the camera lens (there are a bunch of additional lenses inside the “box” that further bend the light (before reaching the image sensor), and if they get even a tiny amount of dust during production, they have to either disassemble the “box”, or scrap it). The same “dust-free rooms” are especially used when making the lenses themselves, as they grind and polish the lenses to precise specifications. If even a tiny dust settles, it could ruin the lens. So... please be thorough when dedusting after opening a camera lens “box”. And NEVER open the inner assembly (unless the lens is already useless as is... I’m looking at the water-damaged camera’s lens “box” 😏).

To fix the gear I would have tacked back on the broken part with my micro pencil and plastic welded it kinda

Agreed, glue just doesnt work properly under such a small surface area. But since the other cam was definitely dead for good, and I do not believe Vince has the tools to do this, the outcome was very nice for what he had!

Combine two semi broken same model cameras into one working one. Less stuff in the landfill eh?

I'd just buy the chargers or whatever from Amazon and if I find it's not fixable I just send back the extra bits!

+My Mate VINCE, You could always try casting the broken gear in a two-part Epoxy resin. Being that all of the gear teeth are evenly spaced, as soon as it's partially dried, you could rotate the gear on a pin, one further tooth. This would reproduce your broken gear tooth.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hZdzGbnBpk0.html

I know I'm late to the party and differing opinions have already been posted but I just can't resist. Is 20 megapixels better than.8 megapixels? Well, it depends. There's a phenomenon known as the megapixel myth, which has been banded about for years. The idea is that camera manufacturers heavily advertise the number of megapixels of their products to try to 'fool' the average consumer into believing that more is automatically better. In reality, the number of megapixels is /one of/ of the elements of picture quality, but not the only one. Dynamic range, colour reproduction and all kinds of other things are equally as important as the number of megapixels. Having said that, if you had two identical cameras, with two identical lenses yet somehow one of the cameras sensors was 8MP and the other was 20MP, you'd get the better pictures out of the latter. It /would/ make a difference in that highly hypothetical scenario, assuming that the lenses themselves were sharp enough to take advantage of the increased resolution. In reality, of course, you can't get identical sensors with differing megapixel counts but you get the gist. Give me a ten year old full-frame 13MP DSLR over a modern 30MP point and shoot any day.
