I've been watching Hanks channels for almost a decade now and love them all, but this is the best by far. Not just with Hank, but on RU-vid period. Something about these 3 together; Hank's narration, James's little friends and microscope/camera work, and Andrews music, It just makes for the perfect mix.

*All this talk about ribosomes reminds me of the time when I earned my first phylogene scout ribosome badge during my younger larval cycles! Me and my fellow group of Cladoceran scout mates competed to see who can eat the most bacteria buns in fastest time! Long flagella short, using the ciliated power of the vortex, I have reigned victorious! On the flip side though, let's just say that it's added a few unflattering nanometers to this rotifer's ol' trunk line.*

The Tree of Life is a damn useful metaphore & tool in biology. The main thing about any Phylogenetic Tree is to realize that it's massively incomplete & (with our current tech) always will be. For every organism which goes into a cladistic diagram, there are 99 extinct (or undiscovered) ones that we know almost nothing about. Once you grasp this it becomes much easier to see why we use the signposts of Kingdom/Family/Class/etc. despite there being way, way, WAY more divisions than in the old Linnaean Phylogeny Trees. (Think about tranversing a lineage, using a phylogenetic tree as equivalent to traveling a journey using a road with signposts & significant milestones...) The most important separation to know is that of Species, who can no longer reproduce (an essential factor for Evolution) with any seperate Species (or higher 'signpost') in a cladistic phylogenetic Tree of Life. The remaining clades are there to help us understand & explain the staggering complexities if Life.

@@Tinyvalkyrie410 It's sort of like the Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway thing. I have long thought that things like phylogenetic trees would be best depicted in 3-D form like those sculptures that look like one thing from one angle and another thing from another angle. So from one angle, the tree would show you ribosomal RNA evolution, but from an orthogonal second angle the tree might show you the complexities of horizontal gene transfer.

Speaking of micro-cosmos, our intestines are a whole world in of itself. The bacteria that live there (normally in harmony with your body) apparently have the ability to, let us say, "guide" or "influence" your mood and behavior for their own survival and maybe that of the host. Gives a lot more meaning to the phrase "gut feeling", right? ;)

It is absolutely overwhelming, and so hard to believe it is all possible! All this complexity designed itself with the help of the planetary environment. But we have never seen anything design itself from scratch. It's just amazing, and I keep wondering if it is possible that evolution as we understand it is enough to explain this extraordinarily complex, ordered world. I don't believe in any other theory of how all this could have come about. But I do think we do not understand even basically how it has come into existence.

We have only scratched the surface of what can be known, but what we have learned has been thanks to rigorous scientific inquiry. Science is about admitting what we don't know and investigating in pursuit of truth. I'm only getting at that this is path forward, and commenting aimlessly in a moment of quiet reflection.
