It's so blatantly dishonest too. Actual porn sites have ads running on them all the time. Cable television also has advertising running over shows that play at night that have very explicit, violent and just overall dark content. History documentaries that talk about horrific events in the past have ads running on them no problem. If it's "advertiser friendly" in those cases, why isn't it in all cases?

It sounds like culmination of American prude culture tbh. They want to pretend sex doesn’t exist. Which, is dumb, because porn makes major bank. And not that tumblr is a porn sitw, as I’ve been in fandom and still am shocked that people legitimately see it as just porn, but if there is that aspect to it... then there’s money to be made : X Like the commentor above says, there’re ads on pornsites too. I don’t get why brands feel like they’ll be associated with the places they post. Like 98% of us either block or try to block ads. We don’t give it a second thought. MUCH LESS spend any amount of thought space on their image.

What I don't appreciate is that they're getting rid of straight porn while expanding on homosexuality. All they care about is that Apple money. Who's sexual expression at the end of the day is the platform preserving? I don't trust any of this.

Weird question. I just made my blog like a month ago, and I'm wondering, is it actually bad to have these bots following you? Like, I'm not following them back, but I don't need to block them or anything, do I? Is it terrible if I kind of appreciate the boost in my follower count?

If they wanted to make Tumblr more advertiser-friendly, the first thing they should have done is conduct a demographic study (ie know WHO uses the site) and then contact the advertisers that would be intetested in selling to the existing userbase. So far, all they've managed to do is alienate a huge portion of their userbase by making them feel unsafe, making explicit content even more difficult to hide from innocent eyes, and giving a golden opportunity to competitor social networks to grab part of tumblr's userbase, with no guarantee that new users will cope to the site to replace those who left. Imo it all comes down to an arbitrary, uninformed decision by higher ups to make a quick cash grab. Anyway, great video as always, thank you for your work! :)

The issue I have with this nsfw ban is that tumblr isnt for children. On the app store I use it is rated as 17+ and from what I understand you need to be 18 for the safe search toggle to even be option. Of course kids can always lie about their age, but that shouldn't be held against the entire group of people because a select few children decides to jump onto a site not meant for them. While it's nice they wanted to get rid of child porn on the site, it's like they glossed over that being the issue and decided nsfw in general was the issue, and now a place where adults could be adults behind a safe curtain with the safe search option, doesn't have the curtain anymore and there's no protection from nsfw stories. Cause erotic fiction is still allowed.

And they're not idiots. I'm sure they're capable of understanding that. So it makes the rationale seem extremely disingenuous. But I'm not sure what, exactly, they get out of this.

They use to say, and I quote, "Go nut, show nuts." They quite literally encouraged erotic, sexual, and titillating content. I'm getting real sick and tired of the "it's for the kids" line when in reality it's because Apples CEO is a fucking prude and doesnt want anyone using apple products to view NSFW content. They didnt give a shit about child porn before apple kicked their ass out, it was only afterwards that they suddenly saw the dollars signs, I mean light.

I agree with that. The whole thing feels similar to like the pornhub suddenly and randomly saying that they are gonna become "child-friendly" (which it would never do, but dunno anymore. World is just becoming weirder and weirder) Even tho many content in tumblr weren't necessarily porn. it still was a place which _was_ fun to use. I think this whole thing just messed up.

While I did have a lot of adult images on my Tumblr they were also flagging cat videos, shirtless men (but only POC), and a hug of Bob Ross painting a happy little tree. It isn't a site I feel I can trust anymore and felt I had no other choice but to delete my blog. It wasn't a decision I made lightly since my account was over 8-years-old.

My personal, SFW, very vanilla, FLUFF-ONLY Tumblr account got purged and flagged as 'adult content', whereas my dead smutty-fanfiction-contains-mostly-porn PRIVATE TUMBLR is still chilling about like nobodies business. Maybe since I don't post on my NSFW blog any more, and haven't done for the past several years, the bots haven't noticed it? It's the only reason I can come up with for why it's still around 😂

I just don’t know what’s happening and it’s nice to know that someone at least has a theory on it.

I already miss all the nsfw artworks...I'm on tumblr mainly for fanart and artist in general. I haven't really encountered straight on child porn in my years on tumblr, so I can't tell if the purge did anything. For me the most noticeable problem on the site was the overflow with bots which was getting out of hand. I do still get the occasional 'porn bot' although they mostly turned into swf bots now which is just as annoying. I think the way they handled their websites problems was done really badly, affecting the content and people it shouldn't. They could have taken action years ago to improve their website. To me this whole purge just stands as a reminder that these websites do not actually care about their userbase at all.

the only way the tumblr purge affected me is that my nsfw tag is full of blocked art now and that makes me sad. and who knows how many other stuff got flagged because of skin tones. i know people say "there are other websites" but listen. i don't have money for pillowfort and will have to wait however long it takes to go public. ao3 is for fanfic the majority of the time. twitter is okay but i hate it's non-linear timeline, character limit (give me an essay on one post, not multiple ones to scroll down), and the fact that i can't organize my retweets. i would have to be really desperate to go back to deviantart. and i don't know any other site that is similar to tumblr with its blogging style. until tumblr 2.0 comes along, i guess i have to suck it up with the og. but it doesn't mean i won't complain about it.

It has been well documented that "porn" and "explicit content" are very hard to define. It's highly subjective and even painting with the broadest strokes possible can mischaracterize some things and fail to include others. The most infamous case of this is when obscenity cases were brought before the Supreme Court of the US in the 1960s. After much debate one of the justices said that "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced... but I know it when I see it ...". If the highest court in the US have issues defining what is explicit then I'm real confident in a hastily thrown together algorithm to police a place like tumblr

1. It's so dumb and I think it'll be either the death of the site or the traffic will go down so much that they'll be forced to allow NSFW content on the site again. 2. It's effected me both positively and negatively, negatively because it's a shame to see so many nsfw artists I enjoyed be forced to move to websites which I don't like and are much harder to navigate *cough*Twitter*cough* or some of them have just quit posting their art online altogether, positively because I've moved to Pillowfort and so far I'm really enjoying how much more positive the community generally is on there since I've noticed most users on there are Tumblr refugees who were sick of people like antis and sick of how generally toxic a lot of the site had become and are aiming to create a better and different community to that, plus I'm enjoying how much smaller the userbase is while still being very active. It feels more personal and cosy, almost. 3. I have left and I don't think I'll return because it won't ever be the site it was before plus I think this will just make the general Tumblr community even more intolerable than they already were. 4. I don't believe the rationale at all. I think maybe this was all for profit because apparently there had been illegal content (and pornbots) on the site for ages, even aside from child porn there was a multitude of stuff like the whole 'tweaker nation' thing for example and people legitimately using the site to buy meth and other drugs in public posts, all of which was being reported by heaps of users and the staff never cared about it before and now this stuff with the app store comes along and serves as an excuse to get rid of all the (legal) adult content 'justifiably' and also serves as a convenient cushion against their users who'd be mad about the purge if they'd done it randomly. They're probably just looking to make it another kid safe/parent approved social media site and trying to get in on that Facebook/Instagram money and probably have been considering this for a while. Maybe I'm just cynical, Idk. 5. I think the solution would be knowing their niche. Make the site 17+ again, advertise to their userbase instead of for mainstream appeal. Also a competent staff who can actually make proper filters would be grrreeaaatt.

I am cynical as to the purge's effectiveness and to its longevity and do not wholly support it. Tumblr never claimed to be SFW or child-friendly and this to me just seems to be about money, growth, and advertisers. I do not believe that Tumblr will die, but I do think it will never be the same. I would rather that porn bots and blogs promoting dangerous behaviour be targeted and that the search and filter systems be improved so that you can decide what to see and not see. NSFW is on a spectrum and I would rather it be taken case by case, but acknowledge that there are so many posts that this is difficult. Could there not be a team of people to police this? And even if there was, do we trust this puritan policy-making and its enforcement? I don't think so. I mentioned in a comment on the previous video that I used Tumblr for a while and stopped for a variety of reasons, including my mental health. However, Tumblr could be fun and engaging and helped me figure out my bisexuality, so I worry for people not being able to navigate that safely and freely elsewhere. I found some wonderful art, fics, and blogs and am saddened by this bold and sudden decision that did not seem to favour the users, just the corporations. RU-vid also has an issue with policing its content and its copyright claiming system so perhaps could learn from this. All in all, this was not handled well and I do not see it favouring the current users, but equally, do not think that this is the end of Tumblr. I wonder what site will take its place?

The Tumblpocalypse in a long term sense this will be good for everyone. Tumblr truthfully was never a very good site. Cluttered UI, inconsistent report system, slow updates, and was only really accepted all this time due to its open access for various fandoms and NSFW artists especially LGBT artists and writers. It was in essence an imperfect safe space. Now with it becoming all family friendly people can find infinitely better alternatives. Tumblr has shown that they are incompetent buffoons and should not be trusted even if they revert. There are better websites, and it's time we find them and make our new homes. Speaking as a leader of the Roadrat fandom, I have found my home on Twitter and have settled in quite nicely. As for everyone else, twitter may not be your jam but there are websites that can be especially with new and upcoming sites. Dont give up and sail your ships till the day you die. Lord knows I'm still sailing mine lol

To this day I still have no idea what the big issue is that is making these companies ban NSFW material, its already separated by the safe search option and even then I have never once stumbled across it by accident, I've only ever been able to find it by being referred to it by other people or the artists themselves. It just seem to me like a poor attempt to drag in more ad revenue by sucking up to big companies that seem to have a rather SJW mindset which makes them shun regular every day people just going about their lives, something like this only becomes an issue when people make it an issue.

Like all other executive meddling situations, Tumblr’s choices are fundamentally not good. Anything you do for investors and advertisers is not good. You are a business, you cater to the consumers, not investors. The investors are supposed to be the people to adjust to the consumers, not the other way around. The consumers always outnumber the board. Why are they being followed?

I've personally never understood the stigma around NSFW stuff, I don't understand why porn is seen as such a bad thing. Yes, the conditions are awful if you work there, but the only reason that its so bad is because people shun it so badly that nobody really cares whats happening. To me, porn, sex and NSFW are all natural for humans. There has always been porn, sex and NSFW content in the world, and always will be. Tumblr was on it way to truly helping people be comfortable with this fact, and accept that part of themselves. So many of us have a deep shame when it comes to sexual acts of any kind and exposure to sexual acts with apps such as Tumblr can do a lot to mentally help the population. Yes, I agree that having child pornography on the sight is awful, and it should be taken down as much as possible, but simply blaming sex and sexual experiences is completely the wrong way about it. As well as this, the idea that a sight so 'progressive' as Tumblr still seeing a womens nipple as only a sexual thing is really sad and proves that we haven't really progressed much as a society.

I learned how to do bdsm SAFELY (physically and mentally) because of Tumblr. It also helped me learn about consent in vanilla relationships and bdsm power dynamics. I’m scared that it’ll be harder for newbies to learn these things because EVERYTHING on the internet has to goddamn “advertiser friendly”. Not having access to this knowledge can lead to people DYING. A lot of newbies enter the scene because they’re into choking and other unsafe kinks (if not done correctly). Even people who’ve been in the scene for years and years still end up dead and I can’t even image what might have happened to me if I hadn’t learned how to practice bdsm safely.

I'm so tired of adults being punished for children finding porn in spaces where children aren't supposed to be. I was a child who lied about my age in order to get onto adult websites from as early as the age of 12, and it was never the fault of the adults making the porn that I found it, it was my fault for lying about my age to look at it. I'm 24 now, approaching 25, and now that I'm on the other end of it, it's no longer my fault when children decide to lie in order to find porn. Children will always be curious about porn, and until websites start using some kind of spit DNA or photographic ID identification or TREE RINGS to determine the age of people using them, children will always be able to lie in order to find answers and media on the sorts of things that society won't just have frank discussions with them about. Tumblr was never meant for children, so the shift to "family friendly" as if that's something that was ever a goal they were simply failing to meet is nothing but a low blow to the people who used tumblr to find communities for off-the-beaten-path kinks or obscure fandoms. That doesn't even cover the people like me who are sex-repulsed asexuals who don't want a sexual relationship in real life, whose sexuality is expressed exclusively in externalizing it. By applying our sexuality to fictional characters and removing ourselves from the equation, we still have a chance to experience, follow and ostensibly take part in sexual relationships with a degree of separation that keeps us comfortable. For people like me, the only place on the internet where I could find adult content that didn't completely squick me out (like male-gazey capital-p Porn does) is now up in flames, and there's nowhere for me to go. How is that supposed to be "inclusive of marginalized peoples" tumblr?? lmao

I agree with what other people have been saying, that tumblr should be looking closely at their user base and catering to them rather than a new family friendly, child friendly demographic that never really visited the site in the first place, I remember the days when my parents made sure I was over 13 before getting a tumblr or a facebook or any other social media, because I guarantee you will still find the negative aspects of tumblr on other sites like facebook and instagram just hidden better. I may stick around on tumblr seeing as I never posted any strictly nsfw work but my issue is that there is not only a safe mode for children or sensitively minded people as well as a anti-filter for tags that I'm sure many people already used. Most people on tumblr are good about tagging things if they contain nsfw or triggering content and those tags were easy to enter into tags to filter out in profile settings therefore resulting in a perfectly safe experience. There were also tons of posts going around explaining these mechanisms to those who were new to the website or simply confused by the UI. I got a tumblr because instagram had serious timeline, formatting, art theft and tagging problems and twitter seemed even scarier, it saddens me that tumblr could potentially turn out the same if yahoo/vorizon get their way. There have already been many influential and much loved tumblr accounts deleted by the site with no notice e.g. the queen of naruto fanfiction, blackkat otherwise known as blackkatmagic

Tumblr falling is honestly a good thing if you ask me. For the longest time the site has had this negative light on it from bad sides of fandoms, SJWs, porn bots, ect. And now that the site is crashing and burning other sites and welcoming people in with open arms. The purge and the days leading up to it lead to a massive boom in popularity in some sites with the main example of this being newgrounds. Won't write a full story on how that went but they had a huge influx of people (an amount that their servers couldn't handle and was shortly fixed) and the people running the site have quickly been working to make it easier for people coming over to get comfortable in a possible future home for their art, music, discussion, ect while feeling open to do what they want in addition without being in any negative light from the rest of the internet.

Tumblr has always been a mess. Slow, clunky, weirdly designed and constantly introducing features its users don't want while ignoring flaws everyone would like fixed. Its userbase has zero confidence in the staff's capability of introducing drastic changes in a competent and fair way. And for good reason - so far it's been absolute chaos. The sheer greed, shoddiness and disregard of their users regarding the purge is upsetting. I am so, so mad about them doing this for legal and advertising reasons and having the gall to say it's to make Tumblr better. It's not, that's a straight up lie. This is also a deeply sad event - Tumblr's a mess, but it has fostered beautiful fan communities which will now be fractured. Am I mad enough to leave Tumblr entirely? Not yet, because I love my community there, but I have begun looking at other platforms and will spend more and more time on those.

There's nowhere quite like Tumblr yet: the kind of strange content it produces sometimes, surreal and obtuse memes and "shitposting", I love them ; the way people comment on the tags so freely as if they were commenting to themselves and not to the author, the formatting of the picture posts, which is better not only for longer threads of images but also gifsets, there really isn't anywhere that do gifsets quite like tumblr... many little things like those. I hope whatever new social media arrises after Tumblr takes some of those elements.

My fear is that after the "successful" purge, they will use the same method to take down all copyrighted material the first time someone demands it. So it would be bye bye to all gifs. And then it would be banning links to any third-party owned sources, following the the new EU legislation that bans profiteering from links to other sources.

No matter what Tumblr started out as, it inevitably was the only platform that artists could really go to in order to put transformative work. Now that Tumblr doesn't allow that, I think its time is just about over.

The purge is kind of ridiculous because in the past the staff at Tumblr has ignored all the problems we had with self-harm blogs, MAPs, Porn bots, etc. It really just seems like staff is trying to save face at the cost of its users. Like I saw a geologist blog that got flagged for a picture of rocks. They just want to clean up their image for the sake of advertisement and app downloads. I did leave Tumblr due to the fact that the environment and the vibe of this purge wasn't good for my mental health. I personally am disheartened for the people who weren't making shady content that are getting royally fucked over because of this purge.

As someone who's used tumblr for 3 years for all my 56 fandoms (yes, i counted them) -and in varying degrees of nsfw material consumption- I am quite saddened by this purge, but i can't say i won't go back to it bc it was the only space i found for some of these materials (and i don't like twitter and deviantart, so these options are out) ! While checking on some fandoms during the weird period just before the purge, the ineffectiveness of it really striked me : while a good percentage of the monster (?)porn, including child porn-y ones, coming from the Undertale fandom is still up (and even harder to protect oneself from, since the "undertail" tag specifically made BY THE DEV HIMSELF for nsfw works has been destroyed), the amount of Professor Layton works that have been flagged bc of the game's (and subsequent fan works, which are very rarely nsfw tbh) warm color palette is just ridiculous and could potentially kill the fandom itself ! So, TLDR, I call bullshit. I'll stay on tumblr for now, sure, but the second a viable alternative appears you bet im gonna create an account there and fastly move over ! (sorry for potential english mistakes)

Tumblr was a way for many young adults to explore their sexuality, interests, and identies in a somewhat safe enviroment. For them to take that away is beyond disappointing and crushing. I, like many, have deleted my account and even my tumblr app after the purge. This is due not only to the above reasons, but because many NSFW artists I loved and enjoyed due to their art ans creativity were forced out of their safe place. Once more, this is a very depressing and disappointing time.

Agreed. I found many amazing artists there and now all the many variations that I loved about tumblr is dying. I myself wanted to explore more about my own identities, interests and sexuality more through drawing and posting there but now because of the purge. The place doesn't feel the safe place at all, more like a prison of rules and witch hunt of people who do not agree with different things.

I'm an artist who's been using tumblr on and off for about 4 - 5 years now and I have a lotttt of thoughts on this haha. I have 3 accounts on Tumblr, my main one is for Art, one for photography (which I haven't touched in months) and a private one I used to collect stuff that inspired me. So far, only my private inspo account has been flagged, which doesn't effect me too much considering it was private anyway, but honestly it's really put me off using the platform because you never know what the bot is going to flag as mature content. The art that I post online rarely contains anything that would be considered NSFW these days, I mostly paint landscapes at the moment so it's not too big of a deal, but when the bot first got introduced pretty much anything was going down and I saw some relatively big artists (who are also very SFW) have their accounts torn apart by the purge. Personally I feel like this was a move to make the site appeal to advertisers (and of course the app store) more, which is understandable from that perspective, but surely there was a better way to go about it? It feels like it was very rushed and implemented very poorly, we weren't exactly given a whole lot of warning before it went through either outside of the quick heads up that they would be doing it. It's a shame really, there hasn't really been any other social media platform that felt like Tumblr to me and I've enjoyed having it as a secondary social media account (I mainly use Instagram these days) because it always felt so much more free. Idk, I doubt I'm going to stop using it all together just yet, I'm just a bit too nervous to post on it at the moment.

Tumblr's purge has done absolutely nothing to prevent the issue of the porn bots for a start. Days after the purge, I have been followed no less than six times by these bots, except now instead of images of random naked women, they're spamming their usual links on images of random SFW things. I believe this purge was done purely to get their app back in the app store. The app was never meant for kids, and it was that open-minded adult-friendly ethos that attracted me to it as a NSFW art creator. I spent years building up a client base there and can tell you now, these so called 'other adult content friendly' sites do not exist for fandom-based art. The purge has done nothing to prevent MAP communities, or racial hate blogs. Meanwhile sexual health and sex education blogs are pulled because 'oh no there's a tiddy in this' which encourages a, frankly, archaic view of sex as a healthy topic of discussion. If this is the kind of environment tumblr wishes to nurture, it's not something I want to be a part of. I've already moved my blogs elsewhere, because honestly, their apology is a thinly veiled attempt at sticking a bandaid on what will likely be their biggest mistake to date. Too little, too late. This could have been easily avoided if they'd correctly addressed the community concerns in the first place.

I haven't deleted my Tumblr but I am taking a break from the platform. For me, Tumblr was a place I could go to find community around things that I love - my favorite being the well thought out meta posts. I feel that the adult (even explicit) fanworks on Tumblr are different than what you would find on Pornhub or the likes. Although Pornhub did let those leaving Tumblr know that they are welcome there. I will say the lead up to the purge did bring some very funny memes with it. Will I be back? Probably. I really don't think there is anywhere else on the internet quite like Tumblr as far as a fan presence. (Although I do love your channel/videos/live streams because I get the same sense of community here as I do on Tumblr - with an even more positive overall vibe!) I'm wondering if a A03 type Tumblr platform will emerge from this - I would be happy to pay for something like that (or keep it up with donations like A03). As an older fan I have a lot that life throws at me so I don't have the time to really immerse myself in fandom like I use to and Tumblr was a good place to go for a quick catch up. I will miss it. Happy Holidays! You need to get a PO Box so us shippers can send you things. :-)

This tumblr purge began months ago, even before they said anything. I've had my art blog there for +7 years, and months ago (around july) I began to notice that I couldn't find my stuff anywhere in search or in the tags. I began losing notes rapidly, and from +1000 notes in posts in popular fandoms, I only got around 100... I checked my blog in postlimit.com and it was flagged as explicit, even tho it wasn't in my tumblr's settings. since then I began sending the staff emails and reports on this, since my blog has no nsfw content whatsoever. I never got any reply, but I was shadowbanned since then. No one knew what was happening, some said it was the new "no links" on posts policy (but even my posts without links were shadowbanned) and nowhere could I find a solution. AND THEN i began having old posts flagged as nsfw, but around 2 MONTHS we even heard about tumblr's new policies. WHAT CAN WE GUESS FROM THAT? My guess is tumblr wants an only-meme safe money making platform. Now with the purge, many artists are being shadowbanned as well. AND THEN, YESTERDAY: I got an emailed telling me my blog was flagged as nsfw and was no longer visible. "PFFF, big surprise, fuck you tumblr", I thought. It said I could appeal it so I did, because wth, I had already done it and I had time to lose. It took a bit but I found their link to do so. And turns out, two minutes later I got the automatic reply that indeed my blog was free to go. What the hell??? Is their automatic system set so that if anyone who files an appeal gets their blog back? I'll open an illegal blog and do so, then. BTW I do have a nsfw blog with porn, and that one is still good and safe, nothing happened to it and is pretty much visible. I check now my blog at postlimit and it says is sfw (it wasn't) so tumblr did changed that. I appeared in the search again, too. WHAT TO DO WITH THIS? I'm honestly tired of stupid tumblr. I hope pillowfort works. But as you said, this isn't a problem for many. So, I guess tumblr will continue living. It did affected my small business, tho. I'm still fighting to get back from that. GOOD VIDEO, THANK YOU!!!!

Tumblr's interface made it a lousy place to actually search for porn anyway, but, bots aside, at least there's a better chance of the content there actually belonging to the poster, as opposed to a place like PornHub who I'm pretty sure gets 75% of its revenue from stolen content they don't actually have the rights to. I’m mostly just trying to spead out my content. I haven’t fully left tumblr but I am trying out other options. Pillowfort has been my favorite so far and I’m more than happy to see it through its beta phase and would be thrilled for a young company run by people who grew up using things like tumblr and livejournal and existed in fandom- so are more in touch with what people were drawn to. But just in general I think at the moment if the tumblr purge has taught me anything when it comes to social media is how inevitably we’re all beholden to the whims of big corporations and it can be disasterous to have all your eggs in one basket. And the fact that people have to remember when you use a site for “free”’it’s not really free, you essentially are the product and advertisers are the consumers.

The events kind of serve as a catalyst for a very procrastinated-upon decision to leave or severely limit the use of the site, as I think it's not very good for my personal mental health, with the whole air of walking on eggshells present in many fandom communities. I was one of the people who left Tumblr after the purge. I don't see myself going back to the site since I was already kind of getting tired of some of the more uh, controversial types of people that frequent the website. The NSFW purge was just the straw that broke the camels back for me. I think my biggest issue with Tumblr and it's communities was that it seemed nigh impossible to find someone who responded like an adult to different opinions or opposing arguments. You could see a post that simply was factually wrong, and boy oh boy if you tried to correct them they'd just respond with insults or "did I ask".

I ran a commission-based, kinky NSFW blog on Tumblr, and the followers I got on there often went on to support my Patreon or pay for commissions. This purge thing represents a blow to my income and I'm gonna have to scramble to make up for it, unfortunately. The next few months might be a bit tough until I can build up my presence on other platforms. Funny thing is, Tumblr's terrible detection bots may flag a lot of SFW content, but they also missed the majority of my explicitly NSFW content. However, new posts I make are flagged and removed within 24 hours, if not immediately. But I am still able to reblog my older, non-flagged NSFW content without trouble. The blog itself doesn't appear anymore but my new posts/reblogs still somehow show up in my old follower's dashboards and they're then able to reblog those works to wider audiences, and somehow I'm still able to get new followers. I have no idea how. Still, I can't really post new content so the purge has still really damaged my ability to earn a living. It's really weird.

They definitely needed to do something, but this wasnt it. (Like I said in the last video, I left tumblr a long time ago because I was being harassed with unwanted porn.) They should never have started by mass deleting, at a very minimum, while testing the waters. New policies should never be irreversible if they end up broken, because they will always be broken on the first try. You can never be sure how a code will respond to mass use until it has been used en masse, yet every company makes this error every time. It's so frustrating. (I do a lot of web support work for my job, which, these days, usually ends in "I'll file a report that this is happening" because it's not actually user error or an error that can be bypassed because the site is just flat out broken - it's like this because they pushed a site wide change too fast, and it was a permanent change that made permanent changes to thing and shock and awe it didnt work right). The "nsfw" bot should have just hidden things from the start. Even if the review process was going to be as broken as every other site (seriously, try to get something reviewed in the Facebook marketplace when their bot has erroneously flagged you - it's easier to just delete and repost) at least nothing would be lost in the transition period. That's what makes me the most mad of all of this. They created a problem that didnt have to exist if they had just taken a few extra moments to think through the consequences of making a mistake.

This is a case of a two fold problem: 1 The execution is significantly flawed. 2 The demographics of the user base were misunderstood. Any way it's taken there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the platform's use taking place that ties in with how fandoms experience content in general. This is the same error that Article13 is having with its wording and potential effects. Most non-fans who witness fandom content do not 'get' it. There will be many blogs that survive but the overall base of users will flux in mass over the next short while. I believe that Tumblr will not recover from this. In some ways that seems fitting as they are threatening or straight up killing many people's source of income but on that same token if they die even more people will lose their jobs... I am torn. I fear this is a herald of things to come as the powers that be try to police the internet and fail to understand its culture. Please do a video covering Article13 and its potential side effects for the internet as a whole as every person watching and talking about it helps.

I never posted sexually explicit content (other than topless, which they would still count when pulling videos posted years ago, then allowing back up). My account survived mostly unharmed, but it seems like video bandwidth was the #1 target, as all videos have been removed. Also, while "540" images in posts seem to remain, the higher res ones are mostly gone now (though that might have to do with accounts that got deleted). They need a tool for user to clean-up the archive (delete the removed stuff) and maybe wipe the comment history from posts as it's mostly dead links now.

They probably removed the Venom art because it was likely tagged with "teratophilia", which is one of the several tags that was purged. A large amount of the teratophilia tag was SFW cute drawings and memes of supernatural beings, monsters etc, living with humans in relationships. And the entire tag was purged, regardless of if it was actually NSFW. Other tags that I heard were purged (but can't 100% confirm since I wasn't part of those communities really) are a lot of tags related to the LGBT, which, again, isn't inherently NSFW. The Furry tag was also purged. And apparently the Lolita tag was purged too.

I'm just confused about why everything has to be advertiser friendly? I feel like the Tumblr purge is following a trend that has been going for some time now, where the internet, which was initially used to express creativity and communicate with people, maybe even educate oneself, is now viewed as "free ad space" that has to be filled asap. More and more big companies use the internet, which makes it almost impossible for new independent entertainers, artist or whatever to find a place and audience. The 'new' RU-vid algorithm is a perfect example, it favours quantity over quality, simple entertainment over complex themes and as such, favours videos by big companies, who have the money to make more videos in a short span of time, over independent artist, who put a lot of time and effort into their content. I feel, Tumblr is going down the same road, favouring simple, "unproblematic" content, making more space for the big companies and their ads, and making individual creative expression almost impossible, because it's not productive and doesn't give them money. I liked Tumblr because it wasn't dominated by companies and ads, the few ones on there where almost as ridiculous as the content. I haven't really been on Tumblr since shortly after the announcement, which has been a big change for me because I used it a lot before. It's kinda hard for me to express how upsetting this is for me, since English isn't my native language, but it really feels like the companies are trying to control how we should think and live. Like productivity is the only thing that matters and the only thing that should motivate us. On a different note, for me Tumblr was a safe place to explore my sexuality, because it had that variety, for example the nsfw art. Sides like PornHub, for example, where always sort of intimidating to me growing up, because they had this stigma and where so intense. In comparison, the 'nsfw' art on Tumblr seemed rather tame to teen me. The purge is making it seem like everything nsfw is automatically bad, which just isn't true and also a unhealthy view, especially to teens and young adults growing up. It almost feels like that religious view of "if you mastrubate or have sex before marriage, you go to hell." Anyway, those my feeling about that topic. Have a good day! Edit: I do believe things like child pornography, self harm blogs and for example white supremacist or nazi blogs should be banned, but 1. I don't think that's the goal of this purge and 2. I don't think this is the way to go about it. I felt the need to clarify that, since I realized my initial statement didn't include that side of the issue

I'm relatively new to Tumblr, and only there for the general (usually Safe For Work) fanart, though I certainly enjoy some naughty stuff too. My personal frustration with the site is related to its wonky tagging system. TBH, I don't see what the big deal with tumblr baning porn is; there are surely plenty of other places online for these communities to move, I'm sure. Though, the faulty flagging system, and hypocrisy in banning harmless porn while letting child porn or self-harm blogs stay up, *are* a problem.
