O2 Sensors work great with modern fuel injection systems, but what about Carburetors? Well it turns it out the O2 is a incredibly value tool to tune in your project truck, 4x4, car, or hot rod.
I owe the idea for this video to the following website:
www.bob2000.com/carb.htm
You should check it out.
Thanks for watching

Just an idea, use a simple Narrowband 02 sensor (Wideband sensors have a heating element that is controlled by the ECU) and add it into your EFI setup. Find a Narrowband 02 sensor (Narrowband sensors generally have one or two wires). I would put the sensor close to the engine exhaust port so it gets hot and stays hot. For a VW engine, I would use the #3 exhaust because that cylinder usually will run slightly hotter (more lean) than the other cylinders. The readings you should get once the sensor has heated up will be from 100 mv volts up to 1.1 volts. The high readings are rich, the low readings are lean. I have found my car to run well at about 600-800 mv. Sorry, the code work is on you (my Arduino skills are no match to yours). I use a Narrowband 02 sensor on my little buggy (1968 VW bug with a Manx style body) and a simple voltmeter to easily tune the carburetor.

My car is running pretty lean, and heavy on the pedal in 3rd gear can hear pinging and I see no smoke as well. Also down on power too. Hopefully, a simple Narrowband 02 sensor will help.

So, if i get this right, you just plugged your voltage meter right into the connector of the O2 sensor? No need to give the sensor an running voltage?
@thekingofcows
@thekingofcows 8 лет назад
Right, the sensor creates a current in the presence of heat and oxygen.

He's using a 1-wire sensor that outputs a voltage, and uses the vehicle chassis for the ground. 3- or 4-wire sensors have heater that need separate electronics, but a cheap sensor should work.
@toml.8210
@toml.8210 7 лет назад
Actually, it produces a voltage of 0 to 1 volts, not a current, relative to the amount of oxygen in the airstream.

If I have an old VW with the exhaust less than a foot from the engine, could I stick this up one of the tail pipes? Would that be accurate or work?

Not really a good idea, for one how would you get it to stay in place? The vibration of the engine and the movement when driving would make it rattle around and fall out.. Also the wires would probably melt from laying onto the hot exhaust pipe. Also the o2 sensor itself has to be grounded which happens when it is threaded into the pipe (kinda the same way a spark plug grounds when it’s threaded into the cylinder head) and if you could make it stay in there, grounded, and put some sort of heat wrap on the wires I’m sure it wouldn’t get very accurate readings
@chriswest5360
@chriswest5360 4 года назад
You can get exhaust fittings that have an o2 sensor bung welded to it.. that is if you don’t have access to a welder and could weld a bung onto your pipe or another piece of pipe, get it in a size that’ll slide over the end of the exhaust pipe, clamp it on there, do your tuning and then you can remove it when done

Could you use a digital voltage gauge mounted onto the dash?
@scootyman2974
@scootyman2974 4 года назад
I looked at doing this with a scooter and a little research showed that most of the digital voltage gauges only read between around 6 & 18 volts. You need something that will read between 0 & 2 volts really, so I used a cheap multimeter, adapted the lead’s with small connectors and connected to pigtail lead off the O2 sensor. Set the multimeter to the correct range (2000 mvolts) and it worked ok. However, what I did find is because the scooter uses a narrowband sensor, it will constantly fluctuate the reading as the engine ECU tries to correct the AF mixture. I have now ordered an AF meter with an analogue readout and will use as a best guess or guide to what’s happening. Hope that helps

Better to use a Pyrometer which is costlier which gives you a temperature reading on the exhaust. The Pyrometer should be mounted as close to the exhaust outlet from both manifolds so that exhaust will heat the element. The sensor uses a two-wire cable to the meter which will show in Fahrenheit what the exhaust temperature is running. This is old school used on the 70s and erlier diesel engines that use Turbochargers to prevent engine damage under hard load conditions. On some diesel engines under high load and acceleration the Pyrometer can rise faster than the tachometer. Thanks for the video.

go for a 3 or better still 4 wire sensor. guaranteed grounding and powered heating element for more accuracy

How would I do that with 4 wires? 2 white a gray and black. Black is signal and the rest are ground or neutral?
@pcnepal
@pcnepal 5 месяцев назад
Do a search online you will get the color scheme for wiring. Different brands (denso, bosch, etc.) use different scheme. The two wires with the same color are for the internal heating element, which will give you a beep when testing continuity and a reading of ~ 6 - 20 ohms in general.

Bee Tee that's what I've been Wondering
@frigglebiscuit7484
@frigglebiscuit7484 6 лет назад
not really. the carb meters equally to all cylinders.
@ahcompy
@ahcompy 6 лет назад
^^^^^^^^^ Depends on the intake manifold... They all meter air equally, but your fuel could be biased a little bit... More fuel will be sucked from the driver's side barrel to the driver's side of the engine and vice-versa (thus explaining why there are adjustments on both sides of most carbs out there). This SHOULD be true to all intake manifolds, but happens more on your "Dual plane" type intakes... That's the theory anyway.
@chriswest5360
@chriswest5360 4 года назад
Jared Ramsey which is why some use staggered size jets on each side of the carb. One or two sizes bigger or smaller on each side, to equal it out (Say a #72 on the driver side, and a #74 on the passenger side primaries, and a #76/78 on the secondaries) If they have a way to measure the afr on both banks and fine tune each one accordingly
@chriswest5360
@chriswest5360 4 года назад
Bee Tee I would use one o2 sensor and a bung on each pipe, and just do them separately, and jet my carb according to what each bank likes.. and use a pipe plug to plug the hole in the bungs when the o2 sensor isn’t in it (which is what you’d do anyway unless you were to leave the o2 sensor in it all the time) which you could use an o2 sensor on each side, but you’d have to have two voltmeters one for each side.
@Limou551
@Limou551 8 лет назад
good, but than you have to know what are you seeeing in the o2 sensor...readings.
@toml.8210

Right. You need a chart or a table to correlate the voltage, but if you just remember 0.400 is your target, you can get close.
