Turning Lanyard Beads on Lathe, for bushcraft and multiple other uses

The bog oak was a gift from my friend Alan Simpson. Alan had it dated by dendrochronology to be from AD992 to AD1266.
These beads are a great addition to a bushcraft knife lanyard or can be used for multiple other things.
The bog oak used in this video was cut from the same piece used in the making of the knife in my previous video.

I have a little piece of awkwardly-shaped bog oak that I was wondering about. Didn't want to waste it. This is the idea I needed. Thanks.

@@JimsonMakes did you cut the blanks with the pen tube glued inside them on the bandsaw? does the tube cut cleanly that way?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 2 года назад
@@johnhickerson1699 I glued the brass tubes into the blanks with epoxy, I roughened them first. They cut very well on the bandsaw.

I was amazed how good a finish I could achieve, it is very hard, so it polishes well. I love the colour tones in the grain. Cheers, Jim

A great project Jim what make pen mandrel do you use , presumably the end support comes separate the one I was looking at was the planet one.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 7 лет назад
Thanks Geoffrey. The pen mandrel is Planet and I purchased the mandrel saver separately ( also Planet ) but they are well worth getting and mean that you can apply a lot more pressure with the tailstock so there is much less vibration due to the mandrel distorting or wobbling. It is also much quicker to set up with a mandrel saver, no brass nuts to tighten or lose on the floor. I purchased mine from John Davis Woodturning in Stockbridge. Cheers, Jim

JIm, really like your pen mandrel work and the use of Milliput in your pieces. Where did you source your two Morse taper pen mandrel and your zero chuck with nthe rounded edges? Can't see to locate them in the usual turning supplies stores. Thanks, John from Hawaii

Thanks John, glad you like what I do. The chuck jaws and the pen mandrel came from a Woodturning shop here in England UK called John Davis Woodturning johndaviswoodturning.com/ All the best, Jim

Could you please clarify something for me: Did you use slow setting epoxy to stick the brass pen tube to the wood or did you use two different materials?
@JimsonMakes

It was a long time ago but I think I would have used a slow set epoxy

How long do you cut your blanks
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 2 года назад
Initially I cut them to the length of the brass tube insert, and then roughly to the diameter of the bead ( if I remember correctly )

+Jimson's Stuff amazing is how it is :) ive finally got around to mounting it properly to the bench so it doesn't try to wander when rough turning something a bit too far out of balance, the bench is a tiny bit away from the wall now aswel so any wobble doesnt also shake the shed lmao
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 7 лет назад
+Mark Hobster . The forces generated by out of balance wood are quite incredible ! The lathe is so heavy that it is difficult to lift but even a relatively small blank can have it jumping around if out of balance. Cheers, Jim
