The part that made me cry the most was when Daisy calls Asa selfish and that she doesn’t know anything about her and Asa’s response to these critisisms. I stuggle with anxiety and I hate that it makes me self-absorbed and feel like a burden. This scene honestly had a huge impact on me as there’s been people in my life who haven’t understood me well while I’ve gone through dark patches so I’ve had to have similar conversations with those people. This is such an important book and everything you said was spot on.

As someone who struggles with OCD, I can say that the representation of the disease in this book was so accurate! I've gone through a plethora of YA books looking for a mirror for my own struggle, but it always ended when the protagonist found the romance, and that was just disappointing. It was so refreshing to see the graph of Aza's illness. Yes she met a guy, but that did not ""cure"" her of her illness, and I think I cried most because of that. Because for some people, that may not happen. For some, it will always be a graph- sometimes up and sometimes down, and I'm so so so grateful for that. It was all so painfully accurate.

I'm so glad to read this from someone who also struggles with OCD. I've flip flopped around on whether to read Turtles all the way down or not because I was worried it wouldn't be an accurate representation (I know everyone's struggle is different but you can usually tell when it feels real or not). I'm pretty sure I am going to pick it up now but will be careful about when I do choose to read it.

I literally felt your breaking voice and I can clearly see how you're connected to this book. Though I don't struggle with any kind of mental disease yet these things hit so much. I'm so happy that you tried so hard to control your emotions and posted this. Also hearing from people who've actually suffered and can relate so much is fantastic. To me, your video is the honest and heartfelt one.

What you said about Daisy, that you actually liked the way she was portrayed as a not so great friend, is how I feel about a lot of characters that people don't usually enjoy reading about. It's unrealistic to find a book only with characters that you like, same as one cannot like every person they meet in real life. I think books are like windows into someone else's life and thoughts, someone completely different from you in the first place. Very nice review, I read the book and appreciated it as well (I can't say I enjoyed it because it was not enjoyable to go through it, but it was definitely worth the read)

To be honest, whenever you said "You are not alone" to your videos I can't help but cry. Because I myself also deals with severe mental illness and most of the time I felt that way, alone. And while you read those beautiful quotes I can't help but cry. It feels like it speaks to me, to my inner me. But I'm not yet prepared to read the book because I might break down. But thank you for your review Hannah, now I know what to expect from it and maybe this will also be my fave book. ❤

I think you're definitely right about this book being an insight for people without mental illness. I read Turtles with my dad (neither of us has a mental illness), and before that he would always not really understand why people with OCD, anxiety, etc. can't just choose not to think about the things that bother them (not in a mean-spirited way or in a way like he doesn't believe people who struggle with mental illness, it was just hard for him to understand), but after reading Turtles he understands it in a way he was never able to before, and I think the book was a real turning point for the way he and I both think about mental illness. I'm so glad it was so meaningful to you; it was important for me and my family as well.

I love John Green and I thought this book was incredibly written and I connected to it so much but I do suffer from mental illness as well and it is accurate when you said that it feels like being in the middle of a panic attack. It was so triggering to me and while I think it was a very important and fantastic book, I don't see myself rereading it any time soon because it was just so hard for me.

You remember the part in the book where Aza talks about how she goes on with life, every day still- watching movies with her mum and eating ice cream and just going to school and doing her work-about how she is not stuck inside herself all the time? That was my favourite part. Because when you're suffering from mental illness, people tend to have this idea of you...this really screwed up idea of you where you're just staring at walls or crying all day or being sad all day. Which is not true at all! You have your good moments, your bad moments and your terrible moments. Almost like everyone else. And I think this is also what makes mental illness so hard to spot. And I am so, so, so glad John Green decided to let people know that no one is just only crazy. I read this book during one of those days. A day when I wasn't crazy. Which is probably why I was able to read it without breaking down. I was able to be a little objective about the whole thing. I totally understand what you mean though. I was diagnosed with depression two years ago and I had a terrible experience with a psychiatrist and I was scared to go back and find help, because I was so afraid that everyone would look at me like I'm insane..they wouldn't understand me or try to help me. I recently went back to another therapist after much deliberation and I'm getting my new diagnosis tomorrow. I don't know what it's going to be or if I will ever get better. (Because I'm almost fairly sure I'm insane and there's nothing anyone can do about it), but I am holding my heart and my head in my palms and I'm trying to stay together...and it's just overwhelmingly scary at the moment. (I'm fending off my thought machine's attacks at me with three novels and 15-hour naps xD). Anyway, thank you so much for making this video and talking about all things wonderful about this book. This review reminded me that there are so many people out there, just like me, holding on the little pieces of sanity in their lives. That I'm not alone. And I needed that badly today I'm so sorry this comment turned into a mini-story but oh, well.

Hey, how are you doing? Now it has been four years... Yesterday I gifted this book to my frnd who reads novels.. To make her understand how actually mental illness feels like... I'm a meet aspirant and currently in kota and I feel terrible.. And Almost I feel like dying everyday since 4 years, ... She is new to me and always tell me to stop overthink and all... But that's not easy.. I don't need sympathy from her or anything but wanted to make her realise so that she don't the same with another mentally ill person, just the way she did to me

This book meant so much to me as someone who also deals with anxiety, it made me feel so understood and made me realise a lot of things about my illness and ways of seeing it that I've never realised before. I totally agree that this is a book that many people should read, especially to help those who don't suffer have some sort of understanding. I love hearing you talk about this book and how much it means to you, the power of words is truly amazing 💕

I just finished reading this book because of you, and thank you with all my heart. I also struggle with anxiety and I watched the start of this review a couple of months ago and paused in the middle because I wanted to pick it up immediately without knowing anything about it. And it was sitting on my shelf for a couple of months before I decided to pick it up yesterday because I have something coming up that I am really anxious about and pretty sure could worsen my condition. This book made me feel so understood and I was on the verge of tears the entire time. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for recommending it. The best recommendation I have ever received.

I know this comment is far past when you reviewed the book but I just discovered you and had to see your thoughts on this book. I adore this book so much. The accuracy is so real and it’s because John also has OCD and anxiety which made it hard for him to put this book out into the world, because you’re not just looking into Aza’s head, you’re looking into John’s head. And I love him so much for putting it out there because I know it must have been tough, it being so close to home. He’s brilliant with words, whether in a book or in a video or podcast. And he shares his experiences which is wonderful because it is so brave and helps so many people. Edit: You started reading the quotes and it made me cry again. I cried most of the book too.

When I first read this book, I really didn't know what to expect, but I was really glad that I did pick it up. There would just be certain lines that hit home so hard and it just felt so weird that someone had actually put it in words. While I know I don't suffer from a mental disorder, I agree there are still things in this book that can be almost anyone could relate to. The quote you read that goes "like I was watching a movie about my life instead of living it" was especially one of the parts in the book that broke my heart because I just knew exactly what that felt like. This book is truly wonderful and I'm glad that it has meant a lot to you and given you comfort

ahhh I loved Turtles All The Way Down! its actually the first book from John Green that I liked as well. I felt this book in so many ways like you. So uncomfortable, but so relatable and also reliving for me. So many situations from this book that happened to me. So many thoughts in this book that appears in my mind so often.for someone who has experienced something like that this book will be heartbreaking, but also so beautiful. And everybody should read this book. No matter if you experienced mental illness or not. I felt like someone finally wrote down what I have been feeling for the past few years. I have been crying and putting down this book, because it has a massive impact on me. Wish more people will see they are not alone. And that everything can change. We can change our future selfs. I’m a year late, but I thank GOD my English teacher begged me to read this book. I struggle with panic attacks, and I had to take a break several times to gather myself to keep from falling apart, but I ended up falling absolutely in love with this book. It really touched me, changed me for the better. I haven’t sat down and read a book in such a long time, this is the first book in.... years... that has truly re-sparked my love of reading. It reminded me of being a kid, the child-like joy of reading Frankenstein and silly Greek myths and getting so sucked in I forgot to go to bed. My love of reading is a part of myself I had put away in the craziness of high school, but this book reminded me of how powerful it was. I was devastated to see that this book didn’t have a massive online following. I had so much to say and talk about, and I couldn’t find anyone to listen. Thank you so much for saying exactly what I thought in this review, and thank you to the comments for being so thoughtful and amazing!

Thank you for how honest you have been about your mental health and how this book effected you. It means a lot to me. This book also meant so much to me. In fact, hearing your brief thoughts on it in previous videos is basically the reason I picked it up as my previous John Green experience was the same as you described. I also have an anxiety disorder and when this book came out, I was also dealing with a bad bout of depression. Because of that I postponed reading it. I got a roommate in January, so my plan was to read it once she moved in so I would never be alone while reading it, but a friend of mine asked me to buddy read it, so I ended up reading it the week before my roommate moved in. I'm glad I read it how I did and I'm glad I made a point to read it in the safest way possible. I immediately fell in love with this book and very quickly agreed with your statement that "I have never felt so understood by a book." My experience reading it was certainly different than yours, though. I was doing really well when I read it and I don't think I would have loved it if I weren't. I didn't feel like I was having a panic attack while reading it, but it definitely made me uncomfortable at points and reminded me of panic attacks. I told my friend that I'm glad it makes us feel uncomfortable because it wouldn't be a good representation of anxiety if it didn't. Buddy reading it was so helpful for me, as well. The friend I buddy read i with was an old roommate of mine and my mental health was really bad most of the time we lived together, so as we discussed the book I would read a quote and say "Remember that time I.....this was what it felt like." That happened multiple times. Being able to explain how I've felt to someone who doesn't have an anxiety disorder was such a freeing experience for me. I also have the book very tabbed up. I tabbed everything I wanted to specifically discuss with my friend. Eventually I'm going to find something better to tab it with and be a bit more selective with what's tabbed so it will actually be helpful. Either that or I might buy a second copy and highlight my first copy. I want to let people borrow it, but I also don't think I want all my tabs in when they're reading. And if I do end up writing in it, I'd like to have a clean copy too. But seriously, this was such a powerful reading experience for me and I'm so thankful for this book. I don't think I'll ever get a tattoo for multiple reasons, but if I ever did "My now is not my forever" is also high up on my list of things I would get, because it's such a powerful quote. My favorite quote, though, is actually not from Aza, but from Davis' blog "I don't know what superpower William James enjoyed, but I can no more choose my thoughts than choose my name." I also had mixed feelings on Daisy. Overall I didn't like her, but I loved Aza's description of how she made her feel safe. I have friends like that and they aren't necessarily the ones I'm closest with. They just have something "safe" about them. As you can see, I also value this book very highly. I also gave it a 5/5 stars and it's definitely in my top 5 favorite books (The Night Circus is also in my top ten!).

It's so beautiful to see how much you love this book. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of John Greens book either but I LOVE Turtles as much as you do. I struggled with an eating disorder for many years and I could relate to Azas thought spirals and I felt so understood

honestly the way you interpreted this book made sense and was similar to when i read it. i just recently finished it, and i'm going through a really hard time in my life right now. this book perfectly describes a lot of what i'm going through, and i can understand why aza acts the way she does, as confusing as it is. this book really got to me, and i don't read very much. i've also fallen in love with this book and it's honestly a new favorite for me. this book has given me hope, and although at times it was REALLY hard to read and almost personally gave me a panic attack, it's a great read. it almost brought me to tears a few times.

I really hope to get and read this book soon. I've never been diagnosed by a doctor, but I believe I have OCD, and I didn't know that John Green also has OCD before this book came out, and I think it's really great that he's written an own voices novel, because the best way to portray an experience is usually by someone who has gone through a similar one them self. And maybe being able to read about a character going through the same experiences as I have might be something really relatable and a great reading experience for me. I read John Green's first book, Looking For Alaska, and I liked that one, so I'm hoping I'll enjoy reading this one and his other books as well. I've been seeing and hearing about a lot of people giving the book really good reviews and ratings, which makes me even more intrigued and excited to read it. And I'm so glad you had such a great experience reading this book! What I love most about reading is when you can connect to a story and it's characters as closely as this, and I hope I can have a similar experience when I finally read the book as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your personal thoughts and feelings about this book, I'm so glad you had such an amazing time reading it, you deserve it, you're awesome! 😊😌

I was in the same boat with not being interested in John Green, but I heard so much praise about the accuracy of the mental illness that I ended up picking it up. I have pretty severe OCD and was eager to read it, but I’m glad you suggested waiting until I was in a good place before reading it. I’m probably explaining this badly but when my OCD is particularly bad, other people’s thoughts get contagious. So if I’m in an unstable place and I read someone else’s negative experiences, it can get stuck in my head and loop and loop and loop until my brain can’t distinguish my own feelings with theirs. So I had to wait until I felt stable and confident before reading this, and I’m definitely glad I waited but super glad I still got to it. I agree 100% with everything you said about feeling understood with this book, sometimes reading Aza’s inner dialogue I could have sworn I’d had some of those exact conversations. I had to pause reading a few times and just sit in my chair and think and let things sink in. And I especially loved the way this book portrayed recovery. So often we see stories with “this person has depression but then met a cute boy and got cured”, or “this person started therapy/medication and they instantly feel better”. I felt this was an accurate showing that mental illness doesn’t just POOF get cured, you work and work and work and eventually hopefully get to a place where it’s just background noise. I know a lot of people feel guilty about not getting better so quickly, and I think this book addresses that perfectly. Aza has a great supportive mother and is still not “cured” and that’s ok. She meets a cute boy who likes her and isn’t instantly better and it’s ok. I think so many people feel guilty about having mental illness because their outside circumstances aren’t particularly horrible and they feel almost ashamed that they can’t “snap out of it”, and I think this book is so so important for that. Sorry I rambled on such an old video, but I have such strong feelings about this book and I think your review really did it justice. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your emotional and personal story and reflection on this book🧡 I also really enjoyed this book! Seeing own voices OCD representation means so much to me. I wanted to have a really emotionally attached experience with this which I didn’t as much as I hoped to, but I still think it’s a great book and am really glad it’s out there for all the reasons you talked about. I also really loved seeing Aza in therapy! So important🧡

I just finished this yesterday and I have to agree with everything you said here. I'm lucky that I can say my OCD is extremely mild and doesn't effect my life negatively (most of the time, anyway) but I can say her thought spirals were spot-on. It's like this nagging, insistent voice in your head that won't relent until you give in. I don't know, I just found it to be extremely relatable and somewhat comforting. Definitely my favorite John Green book to date.

I am residing this right Now I have anxiety and the thing that is making me love this book so much is the way that describe so well how anxiety feels like. I always struggle trying to make people understand how I feel, I just can't describe the physical way that anxiety presents in my body but never been capable of describe how is to be anxious

Being someone that struggles with social anxiety i feel you hannah, but the book that really did it for me and made feel understood is surprisingly a Jane Austen book "Mansfield park". I find it mindblowing how she unkowingly portrayed the fear of being "visible" at a time where social anxiety didn't have a name. I'd love to know your thoughts about that book... lots of love

I just finished reading Turtles All The Way Down last night. I was hooked the moment I started reading it. I’ve suffered with anxiety over the last few years & this year, it has been the worst it’s ever been. Reading this book made me feel like I was finally understood. I’ve felt so incredibly misunderstood when it comes to my anxiety but not while reading this book. Absolutely love it.
